Your patience and optimistic enthusiasm is a joy to behold, especially enjoyed the hunt for the missing piece that fell down the back of the dashboard it was wonderfully honest to show that to the world. Full marks for saving another Alfa. I also have MIG welder issues. My SIP 130 Turbo must be over twenty years old and I had to add a metal strap to the wire feed and guide wheel unit so they stayed perpendicular to each other. Also replaced the wire liner for a PTFE type after putting up with endless binding and birdsnests at the wire spool. Liners will gum up with wire residue over time and this will affect wire feed and ultimately weld quality.

    Just a thought about your AC Compressor. If the pulley for the clutch is locked up, and the bearing won't allow it to spin - you may just need to replace only the clutch/coil/pulley. Especially if you can turn the face of the compressor by hand. I've done that for a couple of cars that still had a great compressor, just the clutch had burned up since prior owner(s) didn't keep up on maintaining their AC system (letting it short cycle a lot due to low pressure).
    Congrats for getting most of your fan speeds back. I know the feeling when you drop something down in the dashboard - so very annoying to have that happen....

    Like others here I admire your patience and perseverance, that old Alfa is living up to every stereotype I heard about Italian cars growing up in the seventies and the eighties. I've no idea if modern Alfas have learned the lessons of history and now deliver a better package for that luxury car price tag, but a quick Google search tells me I can buy a very recent Giulia with a handful of miles on the clock for a surprisingly few number of pounds (dealership prices, not private sales, I reckon you might stand a chance if you went in with an offer £2K below the asking price). Forgive my suspicious mind but I wonder about the reason for those low price tags!
    Whatever, if you want one, now is a great time to buy. COVID is clearly depressing the second hand car market, see beyond the boredom of social distancing; now is a great time to buy a Alfa! :D

    Absolutely love the 145, I think it's Alfa's BEST hatch. Get the right spec like yours and it looks fantastic. I've been following this for quite a while, so always keen to see updates.
    I think they're one of the best looking hatchbacks ever created and I'm not a particularly big fan of hatchback cars normally. This and the 3 door Citroen ZX (in Volcane or 16v spec) are definitely the best lookers from their era.

    Enjoyed the watch as allways, I have a Welder with the same style settings, like you said makes it very difficult to weld and time consuming... little tip, I allways do is clean the weld through primer off the overlapping metal, as delays the arc off the weld and make the welding untidy, I generally use a screwdriver or hand wire brush, just on the weld join before hand, hope that helps👍

    That heater blower resistor looks a PITA to do.
    I changed the whole heater blower in my BMW E91 in around 10 mins, as there is just enough room to wriggle it out downwards from behind the glovebox, with only one small trim panel (under the glovebox) to remove.
    That Alfa is another level of frustration matey !
    But, it's fascinating seeing you problem solving. Trim is a nightmare in any car isn't it. I work in a Hyundai main dealership as a parts & service advisor, and have watched the technicians trying to remove every part of trim in every model of Hyundai, and I don't envy them one bit, especially as they have to remove and refit without making a single mark on any piece (otherwise we have to replace it at our cost).

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@furiousdriving That is rather an issue with the cap-less bulb holders, sometimes when people are less than gentle or careful changing the bulbs then the little contacts can get snapped off. Sometimes, ham-fisted removal or fitting of the assembly into the back of the dashboard can also damage the printed circuit board and cause dead spots, though that's not so common due to how rarely those bulbs get changed...

    I don't want to be unfair but it seems that most Italian engineers were off the day they taught electrics at uni. A good chunk of the important stuff on my 164 was made by Bosch, so it didn't break. Mike P.S. Don't mention Lucas - they had to make stuff down to a price rather than up to a standard (maybe the same for Alfa?). But at least Lucas electrics were logical, if crap, and so easy to figure out and fix.

      @timhancock6626 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had three 164s and a 75 and loved them..but I found most of the electrical problems were very much down to Bosch. The cheap ribbon cable from the Bosch HVAC electronics to the display on the 24Valve was rubbish. As soon as it got hot it detached and you lost the display, or parts of it. Alfa wanted £1000 for a new one (with the same fault)...a bloke in the states would replace it with aero quality ribbon and fixings for $250. Bosch relays in the 75 were pants, the Bosch wiper motor failed, the Bosch electric seat motors in 164 stuck on max travel, the Bosch stepper motors in 12 Valve HVAC failed...Need I go on. Oh, and I64s did not rust badly at all. The 166 took it all downhill again.

      I had a "tailgate open" warning light on my 1990 Pontiac van that stayed on (erroneously) until it went to the junkyard in 2028. Various things broke on that car from the dark days of GM, but they certainly provided quality light bulbs. I fixed it with some black electrical tape over it. The defective switches were in the tail gate and it required removing and disassembling it to replace them. Tape was much easier.

    I love your "fixing stuff" videos. I would certainly have no issues with buying a car from you because I know that you do things right. With that said, I still don't, and have never, got the Alfa thing. In my opinion, they are awful cars, and they know it!. That's why they rot and degrade even when not being used. I'd be interested to see a table of the amount of time and money spent on this car charted against the mileage you've put on it.
