Alien Cov. Deleted Scene Explains How David Created Xenomorphs

  • After watching Alien Covenant, many of us wondered if David is the actual creator of xenomorphs and how he was able to make xenomorphs eggs. There are a few different opinions and theories on this topic, but today was we’ll cover one deleted scene and a passage from Alien Covenant novel that explain the origins of the eggs and the alien creature that David brought to life.
    Music: Atlantis by Audionautix
The novelization gives us really important information about the eggs, similarly, the deleted sequence has a huge detail relating to the cup used by the Engineer to seed life on Earth.
The novelization is a written version of the film with way more information than a script, everything is described in great detail. For the most part it’s exactly the same as the film but there are a few important things that were not included in the movie. The deleted scene is also in the novel but the visuals and the object that we see on the screen lead to a theory of how David succeeded in his experiments.
This part is not in the deleted scene or anywhere else, you can only get it if you read the novelization, which kinda weird because not only it clarifies the origin of the eggs but also because it makes a huge difference for Alien franchise continuity.
It the novel, when Oram is in the David’s lab, David shows him an egg laying on his a table, which means that it’s smaller than the eggs in his underground room. It’s described that this egg was not just another specimen in his collection, but a very special and unique object that David honored. It’s also described to have a facehuger like creature inside of it, so it’s clear that this was the original xenomorphs egg the same one as in Alien 1979. David then explains that for his lab, he was trying to use everything he could salvage from the crashed juggernaut and the Engineer city including this egg. He then explains that the egg was aggressive to the point that he decided to neutralize it so that it was no longer alive.
David also referred to the egg as the true survivor, so from this passage we learn that David found the original xenomorph egg either in the Engineer city or on the crashed juggernaut, which is far more likely. As I talked in my other video, the Prometheus draft explains that the ships on LV 223 had “planet seeders”, which I assume are xenomorphs eggs, we’ll get back to this a bit later.
David explains to Oram that he simply found this egg as an example of Engineer perfection and the egg inspired him to create something in the image of it, which are these big almost human size eggs.
So that’s a really important detail that was left out from the movie, because it means that the eggs in Alien 1979 were not created by David suggesting that the origins of the eggs is still a mystery. It also means that the xenomorphs type that David created - protomorphs - are a completely different branch of aliens separate from the other ones that we’ve seen in Alien movies and they’re not an intermediate step to bio mechanical design of the original xenomorph.
The Engineer needed to drink this substance in order to achieve proper mutation. This means that the liquid inside the cup was crucial in creating a new life form.
About a year ago, I found Prometheus draft script which gives a really detailed explanation about the cup and the gold ish substance inside. According to the draft script, the substance that the engineer drinks is the blood of the first deacon, a creature that gave life to Engineers. In the script they were apparently using its blood to seed life on other planets. I go in much more details about the first deacon and its connection to engineers in my other video on the draft script so you should check it out if you haven’t seen it yet.
Not many people know that this cup appears the second time in Prometheus inside the temple with pathogen urns These few shots are only included in the trailer, before the movie came out in theaters they replaced the cup with this green crystal which is not related to anything in the movie.
Surprisingly David seem to use almost the same cup in Alien covenant, which can explain how he was able to “create” his own protomorph eggs. In the deleted scene, David leads Oram to the underground room, just before entering,
This cup looks extremely similar to the one that the sacrifice engineer used at the beginning of Prometheus and also to the cup that we saw in the trailer. They don’t look exactly the same but there is definitely a great similarity which I don’t believe happened by chance, almost like it
The theory is that just like David found the original xenomorph egg on the engineer ship, he probably recovered this mysterious cup, that was in the temple on LV 223.

I was all for a prequel, but it seems to me that Ridley Scott is just trying to tear apart all ideas introduced by other creators and rewrite the rules of the franchise.
I can respect that others do like this film, but personally I feel that it disrespects fans who have connected with the sequels and extended universe materials - I wouldn't be surprised if Scott outright rejected the idea of the Xenomorph borrowing traits from hosts, which I personally think is one of the scariest and coolest things about the organism.
Sorry, went off on a tangent.

@Tony 2 Toes because the way it was advertised Alien fans had every right to except Xenos. But claiming people didn’t like it simply because no Xenos is not accurate. It would be different if Scott delivered a great film. I think many fans were very interested in the ideas & themes presented with Engineers, but the execution was not worthy of expectations for Scott returning to Alien! I was excited to learn about the Engineers, but neither prequel delivered IMO.

    • @CrniWuk
      @CrniWuk ปีที่แล้ว +3

There are many reasons why scenes get deleated. And it's not always due to the story. In Aliens for example severel scenes have been deleated for the theatrical realease because the movie was already considered pretty long and the studio feared it would be too much. Something which happens quite often.
Another reason is often pacing. A scene might look good in the script and it might be good as individual scene. But once you see it in the raw uncut version of the movie, it changes the whole pacing and tone of the movie. Like imagine someone says they will have a ship coming down in 2 hours but all the scenes give you a feeling like the crew has been on the planet for a whole day due to the amount of scenes. I guess only the director and studio can really explain why scenes are cut. And because we don't know all the reasons it might seem strange to us.

@@CrniWuk I understand why scenes are deleted... often the reasons for deletion are completely valid (as you have pointed out)... But the actual question was, why do IMPORTANT scenes get deleted? And, I would add: "And not replaced by scenes that could help the audience make sense out of the movie (without breaking the flow)?
I believe that the movie was greatly diminished by leaving these scenes out regardless of "flow" or "duration".
I'm no "expert", but I do know what I like.... and am not alone in my opinion... and... It is possible for studios (producers, directors, and editors) to make mistakes...

If you pay close attention to the mural in Prometheus, you will see a xenomorph (the creature that gives life to engineers). I definitely support the idea that the engineers already made their version and David has his own, and that they were possibly the first creatures but just a different evolution of them.

Thanks for clarifying this for some people. After reading the book, I understood it as David was merely copying something that the Engineers had already perfected. I feel like that explains why David was so visibly disappointed when Daniels and Tennessee defeated his Xenomorph, because he knew he hadn't succeeded after all. I just hate that certain decisions in these movies muddy the over all story for most of the fan base who only watch the movies. There aren't as many ravenous fans like us who read everything we can and put the pieces together as there are general viewers. I love your videos, keep it up! (Oh, and having David rub that stuff under his lip, at least from the book, made me think it was to attract his facehugger to Oram's face.)

Yes! Thank you Kroft! David is not the creator. I want the last film in this trilogy to show how the Aliens we saw in the original are far superior to David's, that he is less, that he discovers he is not as clever as the Engineers. His character must fail and at the point of failure he should recognise this fault in himself. This would be a great rebalance, to point out that none of us should meddle with nature, whether we are Engineers, humans or androids. The Alien must stand as a mystery to some degree and we must be left fearing it. Half of fear is the mystery. As a storyteller I wonder if Ridley Scott has forgotten this? In the original Alien film I was terrified of the creature I hardly saw. Even now having watched it many times I still feel terrified on behalf of the crew, they don't know what is coming for them, that terror is hidden. Some clues are fine but the mystique should remain.

As for the predators having a different breed of alien, this makes sense for the apearance of the hunted breed. The avp aliens differ in apearance slightly, just the way youd expect two genetic offshoots of a species to differ from each other. We are likley to find out that ripley wipes the breed she fights out, like in the current canon, and we see avp aliens in avp. This will be because having two aliens around wouldnt work two breeds. We know from the red hive from the comics and the k series (yellow aliens) from avp extinction that the aliens will attack another breed, even if the difference is only chitin pigmentation. It would be a pointless showdown, one which the avp aliens would likley win given that some drones have been shown to fight with yatuja and even kill two

As early as Alien 3 it has been established that aliens take characteristics from their hosts. The deacon, being spawned from an engineer, may still be a full-blown xenomorph that would also look like every other xenomorph we know, had it spawned from a human. Although the facehugger that did the "space raping" was a little weird, too (as was its creation). For all we know it's basic DNA could still be all but identical to the xenomorph/facehugger/egg/queen from the old movies. Contra?

In the end it will be whatever the hell they make it up to be. Ridley doesn't like that the studio is sharing all these deleted and extended scenes, because it limits what the writers can conjure up in sequels if they have to consider what viewers consider canon from the extended scenes.

The deleted scene being kept in the actual movie would've helped a bit.
During David's testing and experimentation he found that the black goo, which is an evolutionary accelerant, had a profound reaction when combined with human DNA. Humans and engineers share DNA so that would explain the scene of the xeno in the mural in Prometheus showing that engineers were well aware of the xenomorph.

Love your stuff, Kroft! While I like the original Alien movie and concept, the subsequent theater cuts in the series have left me cold. The propensity for the editors to cut important scenes that establish continuity have determined that I never go to the theaters to see any of these movies. I just wait for the director's cut to hit the stores, then rent it to see if it's any good. - Additionally, the alien itself, if it truly was as perfectly bio-engineered as its supposed to be, would not be dropping excessive amounts of goo (nee k-Y jelly) from its mouth all over the place. It certainly looks more disgusting, but would probably be wasteful from a biological point of view I would think. I keep hoping that some director/producer/company will eventually clear all this up and produce a better theater experience that would do the concept justice.

Man, I love your videos about the alien- and predator universe! The concept of David being the creator of the Xenomorphs really pissed me off, when I saw Alien Covenant the first time! This whole origin thing really got me thinking and I totally agree with what you explain in this video! I believe, that Ridley Scott misled the whole fan base about the Xenomorph's origin. But I really can't tell if this was done intentionally or not! Besides all the facts and hints you examined, I came to realize that there is one obvious reason, why David absolutely CAN'T be the Xenomorph's creator: in Predator 2 we see the skull of a Xenomorph in the space ship's trophy corner! Boom! Evidence, right there!!! Predator 2 takes place somewhere in the 80s or 90s and Covenant in the distant future from today! A time where David was far from being built! Just sayin... : D So my understanding is that David simply created the Protomorph... Can't wait to see how this story continues... Hope they won't mess it up...!

I think David was largely telling the truth when he told Orem about the purpose of the balm in the cup. IIRC he actually rubbed some of it under his nose because David said the smell of Ammonia was overwhelming.
I think David did concoct something with the balm that would lightly drug Orem into a sense of calm. It does mention in the novel that he felt a sense of well being when he smelled it. Which I think answers the question as to why he would ever stick his face over the Ovum when it opened. He was a bit drugged. I think this is the extent of David's deception on this point. Although your theory does add something to my interpretation of those events. I never though of the cup as the same as the one in Prometheus, maybe it simply proves that David did indeed have the same substance (however he acquired it) and simply repurposed the cup for his calming smelly balm.

that would be true...except we know for a FACT David did not create the xenomorphs. Did you all just collectively forget the first movie? the one where the engineer ship on LV-426 was carrying all the xenomorph eggs? the ship that's directly mentioned BY THE ENGINEERS in the original script for Prometheus? (y'know, the script draft that everyone claims to have read?)
David didn't create xenomorphs anymore than me planting some grass seed in my front lawn makes me the inventor of grass. did he use the pathogen to make xenomorph variants? absolutely. But he is not the sole creator of their species; we can objectively say he didn't create the xenomorphs from the first movie, and can assume with some confidence he didn't make the ones in the subsequent movies either.
like i swear to god modern movie audiences don't even watch the movie in front of them, they're too stupid to even comprehend what's going on. It doesn't necessarily suggest that the eggs in Alien 1979 are a mystery. Those eggs might be the byproduct of David's reverse engineering; we don't know yet because they (the filmmakers/films) have not established the connection between LV426 and Prometheus/Covenant. The LV426 eggs might be the same origin as the source of David's inspiration OR they might be a product of his experimentation. It's impossible to know. Great video though! :)

I would have rathered sat through a 3 hour movie, where the storyline made sense then, having a shorter non sensical ? confusing budget based sci fi. What I got out of David in Alien Covenant, was that he wanted to be a God. Obviously, these creatures were hard wired to infect all biological life. However they never killed David because he was obviously a synthetic life form. with this knowledge, he felt like a God. Which brings some of us to this eerie question : could we have been created by A.I. intelligence?

Just watched Prometheus again. After inserting deleted ideas and dialogue that film was genius and beautiful. Wish they would've followed up on those ideas with Shaw one more film before going down Covenant path. Sad.

The Xenomorphs' origin should always remain a mystery! The fear of the unknown is rooted in this franchise and should remain a main focus for the future movies!

Couldn't agree more the more we know the less scary/fascinating they become , they just become another movie monster.
