Many fans today who weren't around back then don't realize what a big deal it was when Elliott won the Winston Million. I mean it was a national news story of him chasing that Million. It made the national news and all of the national newspapers. I would assume it went worldwide. It was just unheard of for any athlete to win that much money for one event. Even the Indy 500 didn't pay that much to win in '85. R.J. Reynolds hit a home run with that promotion in '85.
Kyle Petty debuted at age 18 (and turned 25 shortly before this race), Michael Waltrip at age 21... The thing is that back then you had to be an adult to just get in a fullsize car, organizations didn't want dead kids. Unless you went from midgets and such straight to NASCAR Cup cars, you had to be 23-25 during your rookie season.
Great effort by Cale. After taking the next four weeks off, he would return to win his final race of his career (The Miller High Life 500 at Charlotte). Get well, Cale. ❤

1985 1. The Dukes of Hazzard ends its run on CBS after 7 seasons and 147 episodes. The Golden Girls and 227 both debuted during its 1st season on NBC in the 1985-1986 season. 2. Hank Parker's Outdoor Magazine debuted during Season 1 in syndication, syndicating to local stations. 3. Austin City Limits in its 10th season on PBS, and Austin City Limits celebrates its 10th anniversary. 👍
It was the Duke Boys and the Incredible Hulk on Friday nights during my youth..Then Big Chuck/Houlihan-Lil John late Friday night with a scary movie, then Superhost on Saturday. God i miss those days ...late 70s-early '80s were grand in the 330/216
Man, the Duckie Boys where hot that time in the pits. Thats when half was on the team , the others where locals they grab from a gin joint downtown across the street from the cat house. U know, don't try to hide it😂
I don't think so. I know at one point they had the phone number for Farm Aid on the 3 car's TV panel (might have even been this race) but that was the extent of that.
@@gary24fan i found out that Mr. Nelson was a guest of Mr. Earnhart after his team donated a tidy sum to the cause but nothing ever came of it beyond that.

I'm so happy they uploaded all of these to TH-cam!
I became an Elliott fan watching this race. This was my first nascar race to watch on TV.
They cut the part where Tim Richmond was parked at the end of pit road and a stare down with the official.
Amateurs.
Fascists!
Just like the disgusting video description!
Censorship is absolutely disgusting!
And they wonder why nobody watches NASCAR anymore..
@@rolux4853What “disgusting video description” exactly?

This is the NASCAR i fell in love with. I don't think there is a driver under the age of 25 in this field lol

Bill Elliott's $1M "e" Bird. Number on the roof was painted backwards
What was the story behind the number being backwards? It seems I've heard different stories about that.
That's the race when Bill Elliott won a million dollars
The Winston Million. Now THAT was a nail biting moment.
Dang that was some hard hits at 13:36. WOW!

Did Willie Nelson end up getting involved with Mr. Earnhardts car?

@@MrChristopherHaasThanks. That is more than I knew about it.

Yikes on the video description. Doesn’t even say what happens in the video or mentions Bill Elliott‘s million dollar win.
Yikes.
was all set to watch til the cringy display of virtue signaling in the description
Don't be a snowflake and just ignore it if it bothers you.
Because it was called Southern?
