  • The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.

If that one cross wire in the fencing hadn't had kept Bobby's car from flying into the stands I don't think NASCAR would even exist anymore.

"Had Allison spun at just a slightly different angle, we could have witnessed a tragedy on the scale of the 1955 LeMans Disaster...The line between driver and spectator had ben severed, and it could have ended NASCAR entirely. Fortunately, NASCAR would make good use of their second chance as the era of speed came to a permanent end."

People can talk about the F1 turbo era but nothing can match this. 41 pushrod V8s running wide open at 210mph. The sound at the end of lap one is godly

My late grandfather was sitting near where Allison hit the fence. Said it was the scariest racing incident he witnessed until a member of Bill Elliott's pit crew got ran over and k*lled by Ricky Rudd at Atlanta in 1990

Looking back it's INSANE that these guys were going 200 MPH plus with no neck restraints, plain seatbelts, open face helmets.

They also had no power steering in most of the cars and were running on bias-ply tires. Back when you had to be a man to run in Winston Cup.

@@ethanweeter2732 Their harnesses/seat belts were "modern" and seat technology was rapidly improving in the mid to late 80s (custom seats started to become a thing). The roll cages and general build quality by then was also very good, especially among the top teams. These cars were a lot safer than they look in hindsight....

This race is 1 of my favorites all time. The amazing comment that astounds me is when Bob Jenkins said on lap 2 " the pace is 209.82 mph" , I loved Larry's comment nobody wanted to go 209 mph, and yet qualifying was 212- 210 ( top 20) and that was single car qualifying.

The harmonic balancer came off the front of the engine.
You can see the front of the car actually lift as the part leaves the engine.
It then flies back and explodes the tire.

In hindsight this is terrifying, but at the time as a 16-year-old race fan watching on TV, I was just wondering when the darn fence could be fixed so the race would resume.
I do remember feeling mortified watching a young Kyle Larson go into the fence at Daytona in an Xfinity race several years ago. Old age does that to you.

NASCAR was never the same after this race. Safety tech just wasn’t advanced enough to securely protect the drivers and more importantly the fans at these kinds of speeds. It was unfortunate that engine power had to be restricted after this, but it was necessary.
