  • UPDATE - Tuson RV Brakes LLC website now lists the motor and clutch gear

In this video, I replace my Lippert slideout electric motor assembly, including the gearbox. I also explain why my initial repair didn't last. A few months back, I replaced one of the gears, and it worked for a while but has failed again. The problem is that the clutch gear was also defective, leading to the other gear failing. I could not find a replacement clutch gear, so I had to replace the whole motor assembly.

Thanks Ray for an informative video, glad to see you keep the Cougar sliding. I've had 3 5vers with slides system, hydraulics have been the most reliable for me. My KZ had a gear drive via rack and pinion which always seemed to fail at the most inopportune time. I eneded up converting to a Venture linear actucator which eliminated the pitfalls of the direct drive rack and pinion gear system. YMMV Happy Camping.

Nice Job and video! Had to have both my slides rebuilt, came with underpowered motors.

Having slide issues, so was out at the storage lot trying to diagnose, and also trying to figure out where my manual slide out hex bolt was if I had to bring in manually. Have an above floor lippert rack and pinion with ALL the parts (motor, gears, track, rod, manual hex bolt) inside the camper. For the life of me, couldn't find the manual hex bolt anywhere. Your video showed me right where it is- it's the hex bolt held in by the cotter pin. So...at least that's solved in my mind. I"ll need to play around with extensions for my drill, as- the hex bolt is probably 2 ft in underneath the dinette. Will need to figure out what will actually reach it, but...a problem for another day!

Ray, thank you for this very informative video. I experienced the same problem on my return home from our winter trip. This video and it’s timing is spot on for me. Thank you again for publishing these helpful videos. I have been following your travels for years and have implemented ma ny of your DIY repairs. Keep up the good work thanks again.

A great resource Ray. I've had the pleasure of slide motor behavior modification session and or a manual attitude adjustment or so in some less than desirable weather conditions. Generally speaking my learning curve has improved due to a certain TH-cam personality. He is the best. And his well read demeanor of calm, cool and collective showmanship has more than helped on the trail. So, cheers to you! Question, is it ok to throw around an expletive now and again. I have often pontificated this.... off camera of coarse.

Nice job and excellent video. That clutch makes a pretty good impact when it skips. Though it should be pretty hard, I wonder if it peened out or otherwise distorted over time to the point where it hung up.

Although the slide outs give you so much space I don’t believe they are worth all the problems they cause because they are so cheaply made. Looking at that clutch assembly it looks like it might be repairable if you can get it apart. Best to you and thanks for the video 😊 !

Hi Ray, For the clutch gear, can you remove the snap ring and replace the spring washer? I would look at trying that to fix the clutch.

Well Ray this may be a good time to trade for a new rig because you probably have added enough apps over the years that would offset the depreciation on the trailer, considering all the wiring and plumbing improvements, etc. If you could get what you paid originally for the rig would you take it? Of course if you figured in your time spent for your labor it would be worth an absolute fortune but it was material for videos so you can look at it that way. Besides, look at all the fun you had doing it!

That's so much easier than a Schwintec slide.
