The most profound part of the video is 2:24 - 2:43. You would never hear an employee talk about an American company like that today. The guys who worked on the GT40 project got immense pride from seeing their hard work put a smile on the CEO's face. Back when American companies actually cared an iota about their employees and their employees responded in kind.
Great footage! Shelby's comments on the GT40 brake changes were a revelation. Kudos to Phil Remington for providing the key to Ford's victories in '66 and '67. The 1966 win was far more significant than what happened yesterday. And it was an OVERALL WIN.
I think the '67 win was more important because it was done with an all American car. Designed. Built. Powered by. Driven by . American. Only time it ever happened. May never happen again.
Another thing they did for the brakes was run the cooling ducts behind the radiator. May have been Remington that deduced the thermal shock would be too great being cooled all the way down the Mulsanne straight and then the sudden and massive heat load from slowing down from that speed.
@@robbiddlecombe8392 Yes, the P3 was more advanced than the GT40. That said, the GT40 was really built around winning one specific race - Le Mans, which it accomplished 4 consecutive years.
so true....Ford went where GM and Chrysler darest not go, or could not win- that being Le Mans. in reality the NASCAR and NHRA dominance of Chrysler with the Hemi, was being a big fish in a little pond. racing for 24 hours straight really separates the men from the boys. hats off to Ford and Henry II.
@@eduardoarredondo1674 It also cost Ford the equivalent of 3 billion dollars in todays money, to do what they did in four years at Le Man's,. Everybody wasn't happy about the dominant outcome especially the shareholders. The only reason Ford put so much effort into beating Ferrari is Enzo backed out on a deal to sell Ferrari to FOMOCO.!!
Dude you need to do some reading on Chevrolet at Le Mans, Louis Chevrolet raced a Buick in the inaugural race at Le Man's. Chevrolet came in 8th place in 1960 in a Corvette the 7 cars in front of the Vette were Ferrari's and Austin Martan's. The GM Corvette team won Le Man's 34 laps ahead of 2nd place car in their division in 2001. The Corvette has won Le Mans 8 times out of 16 from 2001 to 2017. And I'm just barely touching on what Chevrolet has done at Le Mans. Chevrolet has more racing history at Le Mans than all the other American auto makers put together. So I'm here to say Chevrolet has darest went and also won, more that Ford could ever imagine or hope to.
@@lskiller1903 I was wondering if anybody else would remember the early 60s when Chevrolet entered some pretty much stock Corvettes. From a Brit's perspective, we were using straight sixes, which often fell just short of the Ferrari V12. I think that year when Chevy turned up the American V8s really became a more interesting prospect to British builders like Eric Boradley, who started using Chevy and Ford V8s in his Lola chassis. The GT40 was basically a Lola, but with Fords massive budget behind it and Carol Shellbys invaluable expertise, it turned out to be a winning formula. Without those Chevys turning up in the early 60s, who knows what Broadley would've designed when Ford approached him, maybe not the GT40, and maybe not a winning car.
@Paul Jensen - Believe me, anyone even remotely interested in auto racing is aware of it. It's been mentioned in all the auto journals, there are 2 trailers regarding the movie and it's being promoted as a new release in all theaters. The producers were even smart enough to give it 2 different titles - Ford vs Ferrari in America and Le Mans '66 in Europe. The Europeans would understand both titles, but unfortunately, there are too many Americans that wouldn't have a clue as to what Le Mans '66 meant. They would think it was a movie about the '66 Pontiac Le Mans!
How cool is that? As an ex professional technician, it is highly satisfying to hear Carrol Shelby say how important a master tehnicians contribution was to Ford and the GT40 team for winning La Man's back then. Thumbs up for Carrol Shelby 😀
Shelby knew what teamwork was and he knew the gears that make the wheels turn. He didn't throw anyone under the bus and say he did it all, everyone on his team had their spotlight for the work they did.
This randomly showed up in my feed, a day after watching Ford vs Ferrari...I had no idea the amazing stories about Ken Miles, Mr Shelby and the rest of it.

Hearing Carrol's voice brought tears to my eyes. For I cannot help but think the best duo to come together in order to win a race are finally together again..
My travels through the years of motor racing begins in the early 60s with the likes of Mark Donahue, Pedro Rodriguez, Phil Hill, Jim Clark, Lorenzo Bandini, Francois Cevert and on and on. The one race that has always captured my heart has been the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the true test of motor car endurance. To me, there will never be a greater thrill than that experienced by all of us when Ford won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, then backed that win up with two more if I am not mistaken. Well Done!
Ford had 3 more outright wins after ‘66, with the ‘69 win being the closest in Le Mans history. A Porsche 908 LH lost to an ageing Ford GT40 mkII by just over 100 metres in that final win!
@3213232 1231223 . . . That true about the budget, but I've heard another problem Ferrari had in that era was splitting the resources between sports cars and Formula 1 racing efforts. Supposedly, when the new 3 liter engine formula came along in 1966 for Formula 1 racing, Ferrari was considered a shoo-in given their engine building technology with V12s of comparable engine sizes; but the F1 team struggled. Word had it that Ferrari's F1 efforts didn't show consistency with victories until they closed down its sport car endurance racing operations.
Man gives me chills watching footage of the golf coloured gt40 piloted by ken miles... that man was without a doubt one of the top 5 drivers of all time if not the best.
As a kid growing up I loved the look of these cars. One year for Christmas mom and dad bought me a slot car race track with this style of race cars. I wish I still had them.
What I remember the most as a kid was watching on tv when Ford came across the finish line 1,2,3. Their wipers were on and it was lightly raining. A very proud moment. A time when it was fun to be an American.
As a Mopar man Nothing but respect to Ford Motor Co. Ford and Chrysler have always been the best and continue to push one another to better heights. May the race continue!

Lol. Mr. Shelby addressing brakes warms my heart. I owned an NSX for 15 years. What an amazing car. The brakes were rubbish. Going fast is one thing, slowing down is another.
Ford get credit for a huge successful program. Carroll Shelby , Ken Miles and Phil Remington ( luv the brake change ) made it work and win for Ford - special mention to Lee Iacocca . Guys you are responsible for a lot of pride in Ford supporters around the world.
The mad lad who shot footage must've some incredible panning skills with those heavy cameras back then. He also knew correct angles to show sense of speed.
John B "What did Ford show the world? that they are schemers and liars? The GT40 was designed, constructed and built in Britain by Lola, a British race car manufacturer, Lola was at the very last stages of development and with the first cars built that Ford stepped in to sponsor them and supply the engines.. Ford didnt bit Ferrari, yet they lied to their people and still to this day Americans think the legendary GT40 is an American car, they also think the AC Cobra is an American car, bu its also British.. I dont know what's worse, Ford taking advantage of the ignorance of its people, or its people for not taking responsibility of their ignorance and doing some study, instead of believing everything they are told."
@GRRB - Here we go again. "The whole racing world was developed by the more skilled British engineers and anyone else who dare say they were part of it, be damned!" First, let's try to agree that the Ford GT was the result of two countries combining both resources and technical expertise to make a winning Le Mans racer. It was not designed and built by Lola. It was designed and built by F.A.V. in Slough, UK. The People responsible for the design were British ex patriot, Roy Lunn, Chief Design Engineer for the GT40 project, and Don Frey and Ray Geddes. The final product looked very little like the Lola and had no Lola components in it. Ford Advanced Vehicles, Shelby American, Kar-Kraft and Holman Moody were responsible for the final product. As for the Shelby Cobra - noticed I said Shelby, and not AC, the very first one that came from AC Cars had a AC badge on the nose of it. It would be the last one that did, as Shelby made extensive modifications to the car and its chassis and it became legally documented as the Shelby Cobra. In short, Britain was involved in the early creation of both vehicles, but it took Shelby American, Inc. to make both cars a reality, and both cars winners! 🏆🏁🤠

Make it fast and make it last. The 60's were some great times in American/European racing. I was in high school during those times and followed racing with Road & Track and other racing magazines. It was a shame Ken Miles didn't live to see the LeMan's victories. It's unlikely Ford will get into building LMP racers so an outright victory isn't going to happen. I'm still satisfied to be able to cheer for any Ford GT class win. I hadn't expected Ford to get back into racing at all, so this is pretty exciting to me.
Wait! Ken Miles did race at Le Mans in 1966 and should have won but politicking by Ford brass prevented it from happening. Ford wanted the headlines to read: "FORD WINS LEMANS!" and not "MILES FIRST TO WIN DAYTONA, SEBRING, AND LEMANS IN ONE YEAR!" so they decided on a "dead heat" of the GT40s crossing the finish all abreast. The French would not have it claiming that dead heat was not possible due to the slant staggered start formation of the cars. So Miles was screwed! (McLaren and Amon were declared the winners in a sister car to Ken Miles) Then 2 months later Miles was killed testing the Ford J-car at Riverside, CA.
@@gimmeshelter1969 - You left out a very important aspect of the finish line fiasco. When Ford came up with the idea of a simultaneous 3 car finish, they had enough sense to ask the governing body, The F.I.A. if they would allow that. The F.I.A. answered YES. It was toward the very end of the race that the F.I.A. changed their minds! Be honest, if you owned Ford then you would put the company's interests first, after all, they were paying enormous amounts of money to make their cars winners. The drivers are obviously important, but the project was Ford's.
@DJ Rango - How can Americans suck at F1 when they're not even involved in it??????? When they were involved, via the Ford Cosworth DFV, they made their mark known world wide. Two other amazing cars besides the Ferraris were the Porche Carrera 6 and the 1300cc Alpines that we’re doing over 160 down the long straight. Between them the Fords Porches and Alpines cleaned up the first around 15 places in 1966. Me I was 12.
@Beagle76 - The late Bob Bondurant ran his #5 Daytona Coupe up to an incredible 197 mph on the Mulsanne Straight, powered by a 'little' 289 cu. in. engine with a 4 speed!
Shame! Enzo Ferrari was a genius and artist. No Ferrari to inspire them, no GT. We would never have seen all that Secretariat could do if not for how splendid Sham was to challenge him. No, the GT40 was designed and built in England, with funds from Ford. Interestingly all this was done just 22 miles away from where they designed and built the AC Cobra in Thames Ditton, again with a Ford V8. When the Brits and Americans get together on projects they tend to do quite well. Like the P51 Mustang, being a pretty good WWII fighter aircraft... It being designed and built in the USA to British specification with an English engine, the exact opposite to the AC Cobra...
Z. Ray Richter Arguably? By the time Ford got that thing winning there was nothing left of it that was British. And when the moaning started that it was 'British' in 1966 after the first win, Ford got themselves ready for '67 with the MKIV. A car that was a 100% redesign & completely American from the start and proceeded to utterly dominate the '67 event with two born American drivers at the helm whom the press said couldn't possibly win driving together. The Poms like to make out that were Ford never involved a Lola would have won four years in a row, & even if it had you can bet an American V8 would have powered it! 😂 Credit must be given however to John Wyer. For those who were alive in 66 truly understand the importance and significance of this race. I feel this is a moment in history that won't be repeated due to so many factors. The subsequent generations of today are riding on the backs of the giants from yesteryear. The passion for excellence is continually fading and subsequently the desire to excel.
It's crazy how Ford and Shelby American have these accomplishments due to having or knowing the right guys with the best know how; Miles, Remington and co.
Amazing how sleek these cars were back then. If they released the original GT40 today, I don't think anyone would even blink, the shape basically formed the modern supercar.

Dayton 500, lol oh come on, there were only 6 types of cars and Fords were one of those with a whopping 15 cars in the field and about a quarter of them failed to finish. The 67 Le Mans saw 11 Fords fielded, 2 finished the race! 1967 Indy 500, Come on, name one car that was not running a Ford engine. Foyte won, on a Coyote Sheraton Thompson, that used a Ford engine. (Which everyone did except for like 5 cars running an Offenhauser engine.) So who else has seen lots of success in racing in a single year? Lancia, Porsche, Ferrari...and hell we could say the Boulton Carriage won 100% of all the automotive races in 1867.
@Sathu - No, they didn't. Leo Beebe had the initial idea of having them all cross the line together, and after Henry Ford gave the OK, they approached the governing body, The ACO who replied they would work with Ford on this idea. There was about 2.5 hours left and they managed to get them huddled together, this after Miles was over a lap ahead, and cross the line together. Then the AOC proclaimed that you can only have one winner, the car that has travelled the furthest distance. There was nothing done "on purpose".
@K J - Ford wasn't the only one who didn't know the rules - the ACO governing body was clueless too! That's why they OK'd it at first, and only changed their minds when the race was over and they had realized it was impossible to have 3 winners. Keep in mind, this idea was brand new and untried before and it looked to be a great way for Ford to show total dominance at le Mans, and not just a one car victory.
it's funny how most people give credit to Shelby and Miles. But they didn't give any credit to Lee Iaccoca who is the mastermind behind this rivalry. Without him. Shelby, Miles and other engineers wouldn't be hired . and Ford GT wouldn't exist. He is the one who has the vision for Ford to join racing. So he deserves the credit too

$100 million in 1960's dollars to do it. Ford Aerospace even got involved. Race track acceleration, velocity, stresses, deceleration, and g-forces were simulated. The simulator mimicked Le Mans conditions for two races back to back. Two independent Ford teams were used. One headed by Ford, and the other by Shelby. "Go Like Hell", is a fantastic book about it.
Such an amazing achievement. Just a shame the 1, 2, 3, finish is sullied by Ken Miles having his (well deserved) 1st place stolen from him by Bruce McLaren.
@Investor01 In just a few years, Ford & Shelby put together a team, assembled & tuned a car, & made it reliable to beat a team that was still (arguably) at the height of it's power. Ferrari may have been starting it's decline, but only just. Ferrari showed up with a bright new engineer, Mauro Forghieri at that time. Who was a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention, at the same time Porsche was also putting every effort they could in to being competitive a Le Man. Ford did spend several fortunes to be competitive but when considering the deficit of experience they, it took that just to bring them up to speed. My comment though, was mostly aimed at shaming Bruce McLaren, so I may have made a hyperbole.
@Investor01 - The very fact that you believe that money alone can bring the victories that Ford earned, tells me you clearly know nothing about researching, designing, building and extensively testing endurance cars! Read "Go Like Hell" by A.J. Baime and you will be able to make much more intelligent comments about endurance racing!
I'm a Chevy and a Dodge fanatic, but I LOVE FORD for beating Ferrari's butt. And in '2016 Ford came back and beat 'everybody again... with a damm TRUCK V-6!!
Investor01 - Ferrari didn't need to spend that kind of money simply because they had many years of experience in endurance racing to get by on, while Ford had none. Building a winning endurance car is a hell of a lot more difficult and expensive than building a NASCAR stock car. The whole reason Ferrari listened to Ford's offer to buy him was Enzo was almost bankrupt from spending so much on racing! Ford was starting from scratch while Ferrari existed to build race cars and had been doing so for years. Sure, the money was necessary to make a winner, but it took a whole lot more than that to do it! Spending a great deal of money will get you to the starting line, but will guarantee nothing after that!

Quite a lot of people, im guessing. That movie was amazing tho.

Reds Head Movie was awesome till Henry ll & Bebee screwed Ken Miles& Caroll Shelbee out of the win, just so they could have all three finish together, can u say team orders !! At one point ken was up on the 2nd place car over 20 seconds SHAME on Henry ll!! That just wasn’t right !!
Todd Bowser that was just the deuce he was out of touch with humanity but ken realized he was pushing 7500 rpm and starting to max out and so he slows down
I still have to see it.
Going to try and see it this thursday
Took my son to see the movie, it was a Ken Miles tribute. I almost shed a tear at the end. He reminded me of Ayrton Senna, tremendous skill with a mental/physical endurance out of this world. God bless car racing!
ayrton senna was like this as well?
The most profound part of the video is 2:24 - 2:43. You would never hear an employee talk about an American company like that today. The guys who worked on the GT40 project got immense pride from seeing their hard work put a smile on the CEO's face. Back when American companies actually cared an iota about their employees and their employees responded in kind.
Raw facts
The GT design was so ahead of its time.
Even in 2005.

so true....Ford went where GM and Chrysler darest not go, or could not win- that being Le Mans. in reality the NASCAR and NHRA dominance of Chrysler with the Hemi, was being a big fish in a little pond. racing for 24 hours straight really separates the men from the boys. hats off to Ford and Henry II.

@@lskiller1903 Govt Motors is JUNK! what a Terd..lol

This is one of the moments I'd travel back in time to witness, I believe that this is one of my favorite moments in Ford history.

@@gggromay Youre just triggered cuz you probably drive a GM car LOL

(McLaren and Amon were declared the winners in a sister car to Ken Miles)
Then 2 months later Miles was killed testing the Ford J-car at Riverside, CA.
gimmeshelter1969 Never heard of miles before. I do now.
Ummmmmm.......Ken Miles raced at LeMans and won. Then they cooked up a NEW rule after the race to save face .
The GT40 did "start out" British. What raced at LeMans was something very different, and arguably more American in engineering than British.
The car started out as a Lola GT Mk 6 that Ford bought & modded back in like 1963.
Sort of....
FAV in England really designed a whole new GT-40 for 1964...
Monocoque, etc....
Eric Broadly had input, but not control of design...
car never started out as a lola, Fomoco engineers Roy Lunn and Don Frey used a couple of lolas as test mules......the ford gt body was built from a clay model of Roy Lunns design and suspension designed on the dearborn computers...
Without him persevering with the car Ford would not have got wins 3 & 4.

The Ford GT was every teen's icon back then. The Mk II looked like it was going 200 mph standing still. As an American, I was so proud to see Ford stick it to Ferrari in 1966 and 1967. I was saddened when the rules were changed in 1968 to 3.0 Prototypes or the Sports 25 rule. At least the GT40 with John Wyer won in 1968 and 1969.
They changed the rules, yet the GT40 still won.

1967, ford won the Daytona 500, the Indy 500, LeMans, AAFD , Baja 1000, wake me up when any other maker does all of that in ONE year.
david thayer - In 1965, Holman-Moody prepped Fords won a record 48 of 55 Grand National races - that record has never been beaten. That's one of the reasons their involvement in making the GT 40 MK II was so important.
@@Loulovesspeed but in fairness, Chrysler boycotted so they had no real competition.....I make the exact same argument against the majority of Pettys 200 wins...….they came in races in which he had no real competiton…..now petty was still great but he ran a fuller schedule than anybody else and had the best equipment...….again the Winged mopars are legendary but they only won 3 races in which they faced all four ford factory teams.
And the 500 mile race at Bathurst. Now the Bathurst 1000 (km). 🇦🇺

1967 the Baja 1000 would have been the Mexican 1000 and was won, vehicle wise, by a sort of VW Frankenstein dune buggy. Though I guess you could argue that 67 also saw an AMC Rambler break Meyer's record...but then he won the official Mexican 1000.
(Which everyone did except for like 5 cars running an Offenhauser engine.)
So who else has seen lots of success in racing in a single year? Lancia, Porsche, Ferrari...and hell we could say the Boulton Carriage won 100% of all the automotive races in 1867.

Ford GT is awesome. I'm a huge CVPI enthusiast and always loved the older Mustangs.
Man still can’t believe they stripped Ken Myles from his victory ;( RIP
Unfortunately, mistakes happen, there was nothing intentionally done here to withhold victory from anyone!
Loulovesspeed they did. It on purpose tho
“We are gonna bury Ferrari at Le Mans!” - Henry Ford The Second
“With 10 British Lola based cars.”

it's funny how most people give credit to Shelby and Miles. But they didn't give any credit to Lee Iaccoca who is the mastermind behind this rivalry. Without him. Shelby, Miles and other engineers wouldn't be hired . and Ford GT wouldn't exist. He is the one who has the vision for Ford to join racing. So he deserves the credit too
And don't forget that this video was here since 2016 and most of people comments of this video are from less than 4 months.
Which means they came here just because Ford v Ferrari film, and the funny things they wrote about Shelby and Miles like they are know much about that event and kart racing.
But if we back in time before year and asked these people about Shelby and Miles so they will be like "who are these guys?".
And I am sure that this video got more views and attentions after the film🤣
@@MidwestFarmToys Very true. I just exaggerate to put a bigger point on it. It is also an inside thing between my dad & I over F1 teams.
I'm a Chevy and a Dodge fanatic, but I LOVE FORD for beating Ferrari's butt. And in '2016 Ford came back and beat 'everybody again... with a damm TRUCK V-6!!
Robert Yates v6 twin turbo, block used in other Ford projects as per FIA rules
Quite ironic that this video is released just when the movie "Ford vs Ferrari" is around the corner
Not ironic
It’s 3 years old...
Hearing Carroll's voice brought tears to my eyes. For I cannot help but think the best duo to come together in order to win a race are finally together again.. RIP Ken & Carroll
No respect for kens teammate at la mans and the 24 at Daytona, lloyd ruby?
You both will be remembered Caroll Shelby & Ken Miles
My excitement faded when I see Ford Focus and Fiesta. I loved my Mustang but it was a terrible handling car, just like what Ken Miles said. Create car that will beat Corvette and Porsche handling, I will switch back to ford.
I love the Ford GT :)
Here after watching Ford vs Ferrari.
I have been a Ford man from that time until this day. Regardless of the politics, this was an amazing achievement for the Ford organization in every aspect of the program. My prized possession is my 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback. I constantly have people wanting to buy it from me; I wonder why? Not really.
@William Charles - I was a 17 year old when my Mom took me to the New York Worlds Fair (3 times), and I'll never forget looking up at the car rotating around on a turntable with hundreds and hundreds of people surrounding it. I said to Mom, "That car is going to sell like crazy, mark my words." It was the new Mustang. Pretty good foresight for a teenager, huh!
I met Carroll Shelby at the 2003 Atlantic City Auto Show in New Jersey. Hearing his voice is crazy. This is so cool.
There is no name of Ken miles in top performers of Ford
Shame on you ford...
akhil p one thing tho ken miles was inducted into the racing hall of fame while mclearen hasn’t so
Jacob Bowl although ford should pay some respect to Ken
@@jacobbowl303
Bruce McLaren
Inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
Inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1991
Inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1995
Miles was posthumously inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2001.
Jacob Bowl The people saying McLaren was a bad guy clearly have only seen the movie, the F1 team was founded by the guy ! He wasn’t evil, he just won by some weird rule
I wonder how they could change brake rotors in a minutes time...
Calipers and pads were probably retrofitted to the rotor. Came in one piece. Just take off some bolts and done.
@@I.Odnamra And how would they avoid getting air in the system?
@@TiberianFiend man that's a really good question. Didn't think about that. Dang...They must have come up with a way to keep air out and not lose fluid in the process. This looks like a job for the internet. I'll have to look into it because now I'm just genuinely curious.
@@I.Odnamra like getting air in a desiel fuel system, you pre charge the filters. Even though brakes would be a little harder to do
You can take off the calipers with two bolts. And the outer metal piece with the brake shoes must have been a little different to come apart separately from the calipers. I bet it wouldve come off with the rotors
Who's here and got recommended after ford vs Ferrari
Almost nobody who knows anything about the subject?
Spectacular documentary of Le Mans 1966, as I am fascinated by the rivalry between Ford and Ferrari back then🤩🤩🥇💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎👌👍
