- All about me ...I've had a lot of people ask how I learned to sew, am I self taught or what. And I've been feeling like I should make this video for a while since I sometimes allude to things in my vids and y'all probably don't know what I'm talking about. Plus, I always love to hear about peoples origin story and how they got to where they're at...so here you go. Even though this is super difficult since I'm Norwegian. IYKYK
And if you're wondering about the thumbnail and thinking I'm really full of myself...my daughter made up the title and I think it's funny. I tend to be way too serious even stoic, so I'm trying not to take things too serious. alright?

You have no idea how you inspire me. My only fear has been that I would become too tired with life to be inspired! I have had great disappointments. You shared about looking back and seeing the blessings of the Lord. WOW. This hits me right now. Thank you!
Yes! That's why it's important to write your story. I've only recently been learing about this...I'm listening to a book about writing story and she talks about how when you write your own story you can see all the blessings and you can look at your life and reframe events, or look at them in a way that was actually beneficial to your growth rather than the way you may have been thinking about those events. It's helped me tremendously to look at things in my life differently. The book is called "Write Your Story" by Allison Fallon. great book!!!

I think you’re a true gem! I started following you because I was interested in slipcovers … always have been for decades and never could quite tackle it! I think I have three projects started that I never finished! Anyway I really enjoyed this post. I can tell you were close with your mom and I’m so very sorry you lost her too soon but I’m of the belief that you will definitely see her again☺️ she’s probably sewing away up in heaven! Thanks for the great post… you have a wonderfully natural way of speaking!

I think you're awesome! I chuckled several times while listening only because I'm 52, and we share a VERY similar story! I started painting when I was 20, and that lasted for just over 20 years. I've been in retail, food, my own DIY adventures, and decided to take up sewing at 45. My mother was a great sewer, but my grandmother was the master. I'm completely self taught as well, and I sew my own curtains, pillows, and upholster furniture...I figure by the time I turn 60 maybe my house will be done! LOL! I loved your story, and NEVER hesitate to post anything!!! We all have our own way of doing things, and your tutorials are thorough and very easy to follow. Keep up the great work, and my God bless you in everything that you do:) I'm following😉

Self taught is perfect. It’s amazing what we absorb from others as we grow up . I’m sorry you lost your mom, but she did teach you in a way. Every time you sew, there she is. Your experiences have made you into a most excellent teacher so don’t ever sell yourself short. You have a gift and talent for knowledge sharing.
I saw where you are dialing back on your upholstery. You would do well offering short courses. One of the serger channels I follow has started doing that for a fee and it’s great because you can do that at your own pace, edit etc. then make it available via your shop (your blog).

I love you. I know I don't really know you, but I love you. I watch your videos all the times and they're so helpful, but my story is so similar to yours and that's why I love you even more. My mom could do any and everything, and was simply the best, like yours. She used to sew matching dresses for herself and my sister and I (90's fabulous 😂), all my pageant dresses, doll clothes and furniture, home decor, everything. She was so very talented. I never had any interest in learning until I found out I was pregnant with my first son. I too made a slip cover for a chair we found at Goodwill my sons nursery on a whim, and she was so proud. She helped me make a few little simple things, and the basics on using a sewing machine. When I was 8.5 months pregnant we found out she had lung cancer. She got a phone call while I was waiting to be taken to OR for an emergency c section that she was in stage 4. That was Dec 2013 and she passed away November 2, 2014. The cancer quickly spread throughout her body and eventually to her brain. I watch her wither away in matter months. It was like a slap in the face. Something you're never prepared for, but the Lord knows better than us. It's hard to understand but looking back I too can see the hand of God working behind the scenes to help my heart heal and pave the way to so many blessings. I found out I was pregnant with my daughter the night before she passed and I'm so thankful for all his many blessings, but was one of the greatest . She helped my family through those darks days and months and years really. All that being said... I love to sew and have taught myself over the years through trail and error and always watching you and other talented women. You never know how many hearts you've touched and helped over the years. I probably never would have commented on how much you've helped me, but I stumbled across the video after watching your Greek key tutorial (again) and just had to share how thankful I was for you. I'm sure your mother would be so proud of you, and this video was such a sweet tribute and testimony of how wonderful she was. I can tell she was a very special lady, just like you. ❤
P.S. My son as taken over my TH-cam account hence the crazy profile picture. 🤪 I'm an almost 40 yo woman not a small silly boy dreaming of being a TH-cam star.

You want her to remembered, and I think this was the perfect way to do so. Her legacy lives on through you, and now people who didn't get the pleasure of knowing her... know how wonderful and talented she was. You so talented and seem to be following right along in her footsteps. Your channel is blessing and so encouraging to so many, but it will be such a treasure to your children one day. Even if no one else ever watches another video, it will be worth all your time and effort. 🥰 Just another way the Lord is always looking out for us, planning good things for days ahead. Love your story especially the part of sewing clothes for your Barbie because that's how I began sewing at a very young age with my grandmother's treadle sewing machine (gotta love the rhythm it takes to operate a treadle!) My mother had absolutely no talents (sorry mother), but she told me how hard could it be to sew Barbie clothes! I had a Barbie, but no spare money to dress her up (never mind me needing clothes...lol). By 12 years old my parents bought me an electric Sears Kenmore sewing machine in a cabinet (which I still have and use) and I've been sewing ever since all self taught much like yourself. I'm 71 now and I recently purchased a computer operated sewing machine that can do a lot a fancy things that I am learning about. I'll be watching your channel.
WOW! What a wonderful story! Thank you very much for taking the time to share this. It’s so fun to learn about people’s history and how they’ve gotten to where they are today. My mom was a seamstress when I was young. I remember a couple of my teachers sending clothes home with me for my mom to alter. LOL. I haven’t thought about that in ages. I used to watch mom sew for hours. She made most of my clothes. She learned from her grandmother who owned a hat shop and was also a professional seamstress. I love to sew but I need more practice and patience. Interior decorating and home renovations are more my speed. I wish I’d known about working for Home Depot while between jobs. I worked at Michael’s between banking jobs in the late 80’s. I was also in charge of inventory (at Michael’s,not the bank hahaha) Not too many useful takeaways there. In 1994, I went to work for my dad which is where I’m still working today. He turned the company over to me in 2011 but he loves it so much that he has decided that retirement isn’t in the plans, even at 83. We sell metal and wood fabricating equipment. My husband does most of the selling and I’m the entire accounting department. It works. 👍🏻😄. I love what you said about being able to look back and seeing how the hand of God was in all of it. That’s so very, very true. Thanks again for sharing! You made my evening🌟 Gosh, what a great neighbor I bet you are!!

I swore you were going to say… i went to work for Home Depot “FOR THE DISCOUNT” of-course. Oh my gosh sooo remember all that faux finish.. models with giant vases and some Italian landscaping etc… a period with ALOT of bad sponge painting. That cracked me up. I’m sorry about your mom. My dad had a brain tumor when he was 25 he recovered which was remarkable . egg size back in the early 1970’s but had another when he was in his 60’s. Understand completely about thinking afterwards surgery that things would go back to normal. “NORMAL” seems so boring until your “normal boring” Is gone. I like to tell people i hope you have a great weekend and it’s un-eventful… many are going through something with themselves or their family health wise etc. : ) Thank you for sharing your work history. Great for kids to hear. Shows how much you can learn outside of college if you are open to speaking to people are curious ask questions are friendly. You never know where your future is going to lead to what kind of businesses you can start while doing something entirely different just because it gave you the opportunity to see the niche that you could fill and make money doing it and have fun and it doesn’t feel like work. Another thing i have learned is when you are doing something and are highly sought after for your knowledge and talent and because you yourself don’t see it as “hard” you are not charging enough. Don’t ever think that people won’t pay for your knowledge and talent for 3x what you are charging.. but it’s a balance and knowing your clients too. : )

What a great conversation! You are so open and personable I feel like I know you & we were just sitting and chatting! Don’t hesitate to share! I found you while trying to learn slipcovers and your methods were great and easy to understand and follow with no experience. So it may be actually helpful you self taught and probably figured out the easiest way. I’m also so glad you learned that box cushion zipper install from your Mom!! That was so helpful to me!! I’ve been back to watch it multiple times. I lost my Mom in 1996 and you’re right it can cause you to choke up no matter how long it’s been. Sometimes I can be thinking on the past and it all comes right back like it was yesterday. But I guess that’s the blessing of our memories. I loved how looking back it hit you even more how God was directing your path and all your experiences were for a reason. ❤ Thanks so much for sharing your journey (so far)!

i got choked up too. Never the same when you loose a parent. So happy I came across your channel. Whenever you do a sewing project I say someday I will refer back to these videos and try a slipcover. I ve been making Roman Shades for years. Always interesting seeing how others figure them out. Actually Im into the wooden shades at this point. Thanks for the Video.

The very best gift that your mother left to you is the Bernina sewing machine. I bought Bernina's top of the line machine 40 years ago, and it's still going/sewing strong.
Amen!!! I'm so thankful for this machine! I remember when she got it...my grandmother bought it for her as a gift to start her business. :)

Interesting and busy journey. I'd be happy to DM you daily 😂😉. I started garment sewing as a hobby about 8 years ago but started taking sewing jobs during the pandemic. I've learned a lot! I will occasionally turn down something beyond my capabilities.

Oh my gosh Mimsy.....we had almost the identical background with our mom's. My mom was a seamstress who made draperies and slipcovers. I'm like you in regards that I learned a lot by watching her and helping, but I sure regret not having her teach me more. I do have that "can do it attitude" on stuff I want to make for my home, but not enough confidence to sew for others. You are soooo talented and I love your videos. You walk us through your process and tell us the problems you encounter and I really appreciate that. I make my 1st fabric 12" doll and set of doll clothes last week and it made me nuts...totally different method than sewing human clothing...lol. Thank you for sharing your journey to where you are now😁

I built my sectional sofa. The cushion is one piece. I used a twin mattress and covered it with a drop cloth. It's really pretty, I have a boho/Scandi look. My problem is I think I could have done a better job covering the mattress. Do you have a video on covering a mattress or something rectangular boxed shaped? I need to remove it to wash it from time to time. It needs to be fitted pretty tight and I really didn't want to use a zipper but not opposed to it. I looked through your videos but didn't see anything so I thought I'd ask. Love your videos.
Thanks Barbra. I don’t have a video yet. However, that’s on my list because I made a swinging bed for my back porch and it has a twin mattress as the cushion and it desperately needs a cover(currently has fabric tucked in around it). So stay tuned . I’ll do a vid soon.
