    One thing to note about Alcatraz is that it moves not long after the real-life prison was shut down. Implying it fed on the prisoners there but after it was closed down they tried radiation therapy so it couldn't replicate. Instead, it did replicate and moved to the West Coast in search of sustenance.

    • @LeadMetal82
      @LeadMetal82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Or the radiation therapy is the one that made alcatraz replicate. Remember, cancer is a type of disease in which cells devide uncontrollably, and it can be caused by radiation.

    I love the deadpan strangeness of this series--how there's very little that's "scary" besides a couple of jump scares (the canyon crown one is my favorite), but it has a feeling like a real bad, slightly coherent nightmare. It doesn't make a lot of literal sense, but it has a symbolic through-line and a consistent internal un-logic that brings it all together in an unforgettable and powerful way.

    • @cl0k3
      @cl0k3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Looking at it from an in universe perspective, it seems like the deadpan reaction to these monsters would be because its normal. Alcatraz is now a bunch of prison cells that plague texas to california. The ever given just grew legs. People in universe would see these events in the same way we see a typhoon or tornado. Sad, and destructive, but it kinda goes with the territory.

    24:40 The "Canyonggalan", as far as I know, is a reference to the Penanggalan, a sort of Malay vampire creature. If I remember well, it's basically a floating head with organ dangling from it. It decapitates its victim, then empties it like an Halloween pumpkin. After, it shrink its own body with vinegar to fit inside the victim's hollowed-out body, and passes as a regular person.
    Somebody might have to fact-check me on this: I only heard about this creature once, and it was a while ago.

    I think it I finally know what this series reminds me of: the works of Junji Ito. It has that same kind of feeling that reality’s bent ever so slightly out of shape, and I love it. It reminds me a lot of Gyo, where a nation’s past comes back to haunt them in some way or another, and humans are changed in ways you wouldn’t think of before the story’s events unfold. Probably my favorite new horror series in quite some time, it’s fantastic at the feelings it wants to evoke.

    I must say, the analog horror genre had unfortunately became a bit oversaturated lately, and it was a matter of time until many series became repetetive or straight up copies of original ones like Mandela Catalogue or Local58. However, Monument Mythos had truly introduced many fresh concepts here. Overall I really liked it, especially the Suez Canal Crab. It doesn't add much to the overall story, but I like the whole parallel world elements that appear. I won't spoil them here, go have a watch if you're interested!

    Rushmore revenge was the first video I saw on Alex's channel. It's always so off putting to se those 4 stone heads just glaring at back at you as you stare at them. which makes the sudden change to a forest of special trees ever more jarring. That sort of uncanny and suspenseful horror is the reason why Monument Mythos will always hold a special place in my heart when come to analogue horror.

  • @hilotakenaka

    Kinda dealing with season 2, but here:
    Monument Mythos sure is a bit interesting, in the sense that the whole "portals into another world" thing doesn't feel THAT bad of a fate... but the fact that it's often used as an in-world punishment means that there HAS to be a reason as to why that's the case. What is the purpose of the infection? Are the lightning trees used to send the people somewhere safer before they're devoured?

    • @bweebi
      @bweebi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Like everything in MM, it’s convoluted and sometimes not explained at all. In terms of how the special trees operate, the wonderland/tree dominated space you’re sent to can distort your physical form. Every now and then, a flash will occur and your location will be randomly reset to a different part of the forest. If you’re in contact with a tree when this occurs, like if you’re trying to climb one, you will be stretched across the different levels of wonderland. Not only that, but you don’t really know when you’re going to exit wonderland either. We know someone can be stuck there long enough to age into adulthood. So I think that justifies why it would be a suitable punishment for opponents of the Dean administration, apart from pre-existing things like losing your family and being forced to start anew in a world with a displaced history compared to your own.

Each cell seems to increase through the mitosis process, so I would posite to say the prison is acting as a mother, and the cells are something growing inside the prison, so most likely something is in utero, slowly growing to become the creature it will.
      In essence, the prison is the birthplace of whatever is in there, rather than being alive itself, so possibly, if the creator goes for a more creative standpoint, the prison is a kind of snail/crustacious shell, or, biologically, the prison will rupture, or will birth this creature.

    I've been following webseries like these since Marble Hornets, and this one was the first to actually make me go back, rewatch the entire thing, and take very detailed notes. I loved the approach of having so many different sorts of "primary sources" for it--the sort of information you can get from them varies so much, and it made it feel so much more like an actual research project than usual. The information itself isn't obfuscated at all, it's just a matter of stitching it together. I definitely made a LOT of connections by taking notes and crossreferencing them that I would've most likely missed otherwise. I'm looking forward to seeing if your conclusions are similar to mine.

    being called a creature of the night double feature: nightmind videos and old undertaker promos to celebrate his upcoming induction into the hall of fame
    real talk: as an indigenous individual, i'm really back and forth on how i feel about this arg and how close to satire it feels. i wonder if the creator/s is/are aware of how many of their concepts come off as sociopolitical commentary on immigration and land theft for example, and imagery that mimicks real world protest movements? it feels too intentional for them to not be making comments on certain things and if it is intentional, more power to them man.
    honestly, this makes me laugh more than feel fear, because i can't help but interpret it as a taking real things that happened/happen, and real ideologies, and poking fun at them. great companion series to indigenous author tiffany midge's bury my heart at chuck e. cheese's if you can't help but giggle at morbid humor and need to recontextualise the existential dread of living in a colonised society for a minute

    I say this in a good way, many of the episodes are well crafted routines with great delivery on their jokes that wear the skin of oversaturated "analog horror" with a perfect poker face (with one notable interruption by MISTER SQUIRREL) before going back to serious as they tie up the loose ends building up to the finale.
