  • The Great Plateau is the starting area of the new Zelda game, Breath of the Wild. But could it be the very same location as Ocarina of Time's Castle Town?

    I analyse what could be the ruins of Ocarina of Time's Castle Town found in Breath of the Wild's Great Plateau. If these are indeed the ruins of this famous town, why? What could this mean for the game's story?

    The thing that I think is worth remembering is that when it comes to Zelda, worldbuilding has ALWAYS been secondary to gameplay. Given that, I don't think that smaller details, such as the 90 degree change in placement of the Castle Town gate or the apparent shift in location of Castle Town, affect the validity of this theory. Environments from past games that we revisit in newer titles nearly always look different from their original counterpart, so these variations could be thought more as minor tweaks in game design, especially given that OoT was made all the way back in '98.
    The major details -- the existence of the fountain, the ruins, the Temple of Time clearly being modeled after OoT's version -- are what really count here. Nintendo included them precisely so we could come to the obvious conclusion: That the Great Plateau is, almost irrefutably, the ruins of Castle Town from Ocarina of Time. The simplest solution in this situation really is the best one.

      Very good point. Nintendo has never made the story, of any of their games, a major priority. Though, it does make me wonder why overanalyzing these games is even worth it sometimes.

      Its also worth noting that the events of ocarina of time are treated as legend in other games. For all we know the ocarina of time we played could retroactively be just an interpretation of a legend. That would be an easy way around all of the geographical changes.

    As an alternative to Castle Town being physically moved, I would suggest the possibility that you're just looking at the map from the wrong relative angle. In the Lord of the Rings series, Dwarves are known to draw their maps so that the top is East rather than North. Since this map is given to you by the Shiekah Slate, it is possible that they just use a different point of reference on their maps than Hylians. Then any other inconsistency could be cleared up by continental drift or some such thing.

    • @radconx
      @radconx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the same thing and commented above on it. The map being rotated would explain a lot, along with Death Mountain (possibly now Mt Hylia) being dormant - it's likely Death Mountain, a newer active volcano was seen in Twilight Princess, and regardless of what timeline this was based in, after Ocarina of Time the volcano could be dormant, the movement of tectonic plates would mean the new Death Mountain would always exist (unless somehow losing to or defeating Ganon has the bizarre effect of changing tectonic plate movement) .

      Hi Zeltik,
      I have a couple of thoughts based on your placement of the OoT map.
      If you notice, on the BotW map there is a round patch at the end of the road to Hyrule Castle just before the archway. This could be the position of Ganon's Castle at the end of Ocarina of Time which didn't take the place of the castle, it occupied the grassy hill space just before Hyrule Castle. In BotW it could be the place of the Bokoblin's Skull Fort which is shown to be right before and to the left of the archway. It is likely that at the end of Ocarina of Time the Castle ruins are hidden by the cliffs that now exist around Ganon's tower, cliffs that would have been created by digging out the massive lava pit that exists below Ganon's floating tower. OoT of time never shows the state of the castle after Ganon occupies Hyrule.
      I don't believe that Hyrule Castle Town has been moved in BotW, the map, it may simply have been rotated so the top of the map is south and the bottom is north - I don't recall seeing a compass anywhere in the footage so far. It's very likely that Mt Hylia below the Temple of Time is in fact a now dormant Death Mountain. This could be explained by the death of Volvagia in OoT. The game's have shown that what Hyrule calls Death Mountain has a tendency to change between games, so this would make sense. This could also mean that the Hylia River was formerly called Zora River. Cities have a tendency to expand and this would also help to explain the misplaced town entrance.

  • @jegoto
    @jegoto ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Every time I see footage of Tears of the Kingdom, I remember this theory (exactly when Hyrule castle is being raised and all the islands floating in the sky). It makes a lot of sense that somehow the big plateau was moved intentionally to that location and also with the forgotten temple (placed in the middle of nowhere). I am so hyped to see something about this!

  • @EmeraldDragon
    @EmeraldDragon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    I've been thinking about this. As we all know at the end of OoT Hyrule Castle was destroyed in the final battle (Downfall and Adult) or in the ware that followed (Child), so this theory makes perfect since that a new castle would be built. But that leaves the question of the Guardians. If the castle was already in ruins, why were they attacking it? Where they looking for something, if so, what?

    • @spenserfarman3045
      @spenserfarman3045 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      EmeraldDragon I could guess that the guardians were searching for a still recovering Link when they still had run of most of the land of hyrule. They couldn’t get very far most likely due to Zelda using her sealing powers to trap Ganon and limit his power over the guardians, which may account for why they only managed to get to one small area at the top of the great plateau.

    • @LuciaFiero
      @LuciaFiero 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The ruins are called the Eastern Abbey in BOTW. It's possible that when a new site for hyrule castle was selected the clergy from the Temple of Time decided to put the rubble to good use and build themselves a place to live. Abbeys are often as large as palaces. This kind of building recycling is something people often do: The Coliseum in Rome is in the state that it's in, not (just?) because of war or bombardment, but because the locals disassembled parts of it and carted it off to make their own stuff.
      As a seat the Time priests/priestesses (Servants of Hylia? Servants of the Sages?) perhaps Ganon was concerned they knew of a means to weaken/attack/seal him. This would make them an important target.
      Or the Guardians may have come as servants of the Yiga whose job it was to find the recovering hero, and they imagined the holy servants of Time/Hylia/The Sages might have been entrusted with that knowledge...

    Okay, I read a bit of the comments, but no one said anything about tectonic plates. This game is supposedly WAAAAAYYY after all the Zelda games. If we take that into consideration, it would make sense with tectonic plates. Everything is relatively close to Death Mountain, so earthquakes and plate movement is highly likely.
    I believe that plate movement, is likely, and if it takes place as far in the future as I think it does, there is little to no flaws in this theory. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    I believe the theory that the Great Plateau is the same location as OoT Castle town is correct but you make a huge stretch by saying it's in a different position so that means it was moved.
    Let's not forget this is a game and if they have to mimick or follow older games exactly as they were that would be a HUGE limitation, so Castle town is in a different position because it suits this game and that's it, all subtle differences between Zelda games can be explained by that, nobody would want any new Zelda to be limited to what old Zeldas did.
    Think of the new gods(?)/guardians(?) that Twilight Princess introduced, they where never mentioned in other Zeldas further in the Timeline, the goddess Hylia is also a good example for this, Hylia as a goddess was NEVER mentioned in any other game in the timeline which is ridiculous to even consider since she is the highest God in the Legend of Zelda phanteon.

    • @Sondrebol
      @Sondrebol 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cant se any reason for them to move it there if for less limitations. Surely if they had this idea from the start of, wich i think they did, they would have planned out these areas from OOT first, then filled in the gaps around them. And in Zelda, there has rarely been any "its like that because its a game" most things have been related to other things. And also, having this area in the middle couldnt possibly create any limitations. I dont know what is in the middle of the map, but the platoue is just plains with a small mountain. If they had lowered it back to the ground or even just moved some hills in the middle, it would make no more limitations than it does where it is.

      The first mention of the Three Goddesses, Farore, Din and Nayru, is in Ocarina of Time. They are the goddesses who created the world and all that is in it. The guardians in Twilight Princess are named after these goddesses (don't remember their exact names), same as the dragons in Breath of the Wild (Farosh, Dinraal and Naydra). Julia is not the highest goddess in the pantheon, she had nothing to do with the creation of the world. There are theories that she was the Goddess of Time and Space, since most powers associated with her seem to be Space-Time related (Song of Time, Sun's Song, Prelude of Light, raising and lowering the Skyloft plateau, etc....).
      It is true, Nintendo tends to not care about precision alignment between games, but at the very least ever since the official timeline has been published, they were making an effort to keep things recognisable and consistent, at least as far as geography goes. It might be skewed by a few degrees and resized disproportionately, but it always fits the rough pattern. And as technology allows for more and more granular detail, the effort is made to increase the precision of the details.
      The great plateau looks like it has been cut out of the ground and placed on top of the land in a different manner to skyloft landing in the sealed grounds. The sealed grounds were a depression that matched the depth of the Skyloft landmass almost precisely, leaving the edges of the landed Skyloft (which became the Castle and city of Hyrule, built around the sealed temple which was bricked inside the temple of Time) almost flush with the surrounding landscape. But the landscape of the great plateau, while it probably is the same piece of rock that used to be skyloft, is not sunk in flush into a matching hole. The lands that are the great plateau have been moved from a different location, using the same magic Hylia used to raise skyloft into the air, and deposited where it is now.

    The Life in the Ruins trailer seems to explain the placement of Castle Town. There is a second Castle Town from Twilight Princess located where a second northern castle is. And that castle is the same as Twilight Princess as well. This seems to be implying that this is Twilight Princess' map recreated. Twilight Princess' map was heavily inspired by Ocarina but everything was moved further north due to the entire civilization moving.

    I'm 5 years late, but don't forget that in the Adult Timeline, the castle was obliterated by Ganon during Ocarina of Time. The abbey may have been built in place of the castle as a sort of tribute or religious homage, while the royal family's residence itself would have been rebuilt elsewhere... Still, it doesn't explain why Korok/Kokiri Forest is north of the castle now, and why Castle Town is where the south of the fields, north of lake Hylia!

    I love the theory here. I like to think this is a prequel to the Twilight Princess, after the events of Majoras Mask. Where Link has had time to grow up and adventure more, went back to Hyrule and for some reason, the Shieka felt like they needed to seal him away in case Ganondorf were to ever revive (like he always does), or if some other force were to threaten Hyrule.
    The new Hyrule Castle feels very Twilight princess-y, especially with the dark ganon magic engulfing it.

    The landmarks are pretty striking, but I think to be honest the location of the Castle Town is simply "Hyrule has expanded a lot, and OOT Hyrule was left mostly to decay".
    If you look at the image of the ruins, there is a mountain exactly where Death Mountain in OOT was. While Death Mountain is in a different place in BotW it's possible that one was named after it, and this mountain became dormant. The castle is also in a different place now, with the OOT one in ruins, which also supports this.

    As a game dev student I have a bit of a different take on why castle town appears to have moved.
    In games where the player has full control of the camera, its incredibly difficult to show the player what you want them to see. This is especially true in an open world.
    The shrine of resurrection is the only time in the game where the player is technically forced to see what nintendo wants them see because they have to exit the shrine of resurrection. The exit of the shrine is a framing device used to show off 2 major points of interest; Hyrule Castle and Death Mountain.
    Nintendo clearly deemed it nessecary that the shrine of resurrection had to be near the temple of time, which in turn means the only way to get that establishing shot is to change where the original castle town was situated geographically. It's just a simple design decision mean to ensure the game opens up with a bit of wow factor.

    In this 4k screenshot i.imgur.com/0Tx1M4x.jpg to me it looks like the spot where child Link and Zelda meet, possibly the Majora's mask Link.
    Here is the screenshot from OoT tinyurl.com/jofhgcc . Here's another from the 3DS remaster, tinyurl.com/j5s8zen which looks even more like it.
    Edit: th-cam.com/video/2vOvHs_C5Aw/w-d-xo.htmlm52s check out the ending of 3DS OoT! The camera angle pans from the ground, but on the opposite side as the Breath of the wild Screenshot!
    OoT & 3DS OoT in the same picture so you can see the changes. www.n1ntendo.nl/file/game/2112/zelda_comp-13.png
    This child Link may be the Link in Breath of the Wild, and the events in Majora's Mask may have all just been a dream during this hundred years sleep.
    Considering all the characters in Termina were the same as those from ocarina of time, and it is known that when dreaming we only use faces we've seen before, it would explain why so many characters are re-used from Ocarina of TIme in Majora's Mask.
    OoT Adult link defeated Ganondorf, got sent back in time by Zelda, became OoT Child link with retained memories of OoT, told on Ganondorf/Zelda told on Ganon to the King of Hyrule, and Hyrule had the sages attempt to execute Ganondorf for treason. They were not able to execute Ganondorf, and the sages were forced to send him to the twilight realm, that leads to the events of Twilight Princess.
    OoT Link may have went to sleep at this time, understanding that Ganondorf would one day break free from the Twilight Realm, since his execution failed, to be ready for his inevitable revival, since he had killed Ganondorf in OoT, and went back to childhood, he retained the knowledge of Ganon's full power, and wants to defeat him again when he revives.
    This could explain why Link doesn't remember anything, because he lived another life, or possibly life times, while dreaming for 100 years, and may have forgotten reality.
    This would combine Twilight Princess and Child OoT Link's timelines, considering Twilight Link was taught by a spirit/dead form of Link. Twilight Link may have been born while OoT Link was sleeping for 100 years, and it may have been a different Link teaching Twilight Link new moves, or OoT Child Link teaching Twilight Link in spirit form, after dreaming the events of Majora's Mask, and possibly more.

    • @coolman229
      @coolman229 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +wheway33 Remember that the Downfall Timeline had the same thing happen. The difference was that Link died in that timeline leading to the Imprisoning War described in A Link to the Past. And considering that Daphnes used the Triforce to keep Hyrule flooded and seal Ganon under the sea (which we know continues through the DS games) I doubt this is in the Adult Timeline.

      coolman229
      There is also the words Daphnes used when he made wish. As I recall he said to "wash away this ancient land of Hyrule." Wash away doesn't mean to submerge. It can mean to carry (something) away by movement in water, or to get rid of something completely. The Japanese version of WW suggests the later of two. "過去の地ハイラルを消し去り." 消し去る (the base form of 消し去り) roughly means to 'erase' or 'get rid of.' Meaning if Daphnes' wish was fully granted, Hyrule wasn't just flooded, it's gone.

    Possible timeline placements for this game:
    1. A new branch of the timeline, mainly because this is a resurrected Link who appears to wake up in the future, which could indicate that it is the Link from OoT (whose soul was sealed in the Sacred Realm), but woke up too late.
    2. After TWW, because Hyrule is in ruins, there are Koroks and in an item description the "Ancient Sea" is mentioned.
    3. After TP, because Aonuma said there are going to be connections with that game. I highly doubt this however, because in BotW the Temple of Time is in a far more complete state than it is in TP.

      He isn't saying ocarina, which I assume is what people are picking up on. English and Australian (and similar) accents have a feature called a Linking-R (or "Intrusive-R") which is placed between low back vowels like the "a" in "ocarina" and a word that begins with another vowel (like the space in the words "Ocarina of"). It's like the "n" in "an apple", except that it remains unwritten. You will hear many people from England or Australia say things like "drawRing" or sometimes "tuner and salad" instead of "tuna and salad" because of this reason. To them it is the same as the "n" in "an". It separates vowel-final and vowel-intial words.
      For the interested: this only happens (in the English varieties mentioned above) with the vowels at the end of , , , and . The only other vowels that can appear word-finally in English are those at the end of , (debatably the same two), and . and link with a Y-sound instead of an R-sound, and and link with a W-sound instead.

    (It don't have anything beyond windows paint, so this is just me eyeballing, plus all maps of Hyrule never match up exactly)
    It much more corresponds with the (Gamecube) Twilight Princess map, lining up the Temples of Time and the Hyrule castles. Also, the sacred grove that's to the west of TP's ToT has something similararly/exactly named in Breath (Spirit forest?). It also places Death mountain in about the same spots (NE of the ToT, E of the Castle), and what looks like Lake Hylia to the desert in approximately the right places.
    So there's a 'new Hyrule Castle' (As seen in Breath and TP) and 'old Hyrule Castle and Temple of Time area', which is why lining up the OoT map with with Breath map doesn't really work.
    This makes sense, with Breath of the wind supposed to cause 'ahah!' moments connected to Twilight Princess. My guess is the has to do with the whole 'Interlopers' thing in TP, especially with the Sheikah tech looking so similar to Twili themes. Or it's a sequel to TP's Link wandering, since Ganon isn't sealed in the Twilight Realm. Or something?

  • @nestrior7733
    @nestrior7733 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The theory definitely holds up. Cataclysmic events are known to change the face of the earth in fiction from time to time, and sometimes even quite massively so (Wheel of Time begins with the birth of a mountain and the splitting of a river around a newly formed island, and that is only the first change the world sees in the Time of Madness; which is repeated throughout the Ages). And the fact that only Castle Town seems to be so dislocated from where it should be supports the thought of an intervention of sorts. The only detriment is that we would have two Castles, one in ruins and one with the Calamity Ganon swirling around. But that is worthy of a theory on its own.

  • @Moopie12
    @Moopie12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something I've noticed about this video now that we have more information. Where hyrule castle and town should be, north of the field and west of death mountain, is now where the Great deku tree is, as of the switch reveal the other week. You can see pink leaves in the canopy above him. Then later, in several panning shots of Hyrule, as well as the custcene that takes place on top of the plateau tower, you can see those same pink leaves in that geographic area.
    So it looks like the Great deku tree has taken over the former region of Hyrule castle.

  • @shadow-squid4872

  • @andresburton2130
    @andresburton2130 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I completely agree with your theory, except for one detail. The Eastern Abbey is just that, the Eastern Abbey to the Temple of Time. Unless if BotW takes place in the Child Timeline, Hyrule Castle would have been destroyed and replaced with Ganon's Tower in either Adult Timeline. The most likely location for Hyrule Castle would be on the banks of the River of the Dead, beneath Mount Hylia, which at one point could have been Hyrule Castle's moat.

    This video confirms that this game takes place in the Child Timeline. The ruins of the Hyrule Castle from Ocarina of Time wouldn't exist in the Adult or Downfall Timelines since Ganondorf completely destroyed that castle and replaced it with a huge pit of lava. You could say, "But they could have rebuilt Hyrule Castle," well they did, but in the Wind Waker and A Link to the Past Hyrule Castle is in a new location meaning that they shouldn't be where they are in Breath of the Wild.

    Holy shit this is a solid theory. That would mean that the Great Plateau itself IS Skyloft and that's what the Old Man meant be "the birthplace of Hyrule." Not the actual geographic location, but the island itself that was once Skyloft, then where Hyrule Castle was built in Ocarina of Time, and now was moved to where Link begins his journey in the southwestern plain of Hyrule field. We also have evidence of floating islands in general from the one we see flying off in the distance of the demo.

  • @RagArk
    @RagArk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think BotW Link is Skyward Sword Link. Here's why. 1) The land of Hyrule is in this state because we find Link waking up after 100 years of helping Zelda establish the land. This being the case, this might be the first time ever that we will only see Ganondorf as Ganon. What I theorize is that Calamity Ganon is the first "Ganon" following the Demise Curse. This could be why he appears as Calamity Ganon right from the start. The cycle has officially begun. 2)The Hylia statue is there because the statue fell with Zelda and Link at the end of SS. It would make sense for it to be in this place. However, this doesn't mean that it was signified as the "Temple of Time" at that time. It could have just been the Temple of Hylia. This is probably why the Master Sword is not located in the Temple of Time/Hylia. 3) The Kokiri form is not present because there isn't a Link that lived with the Kokiri. Who is to say that the Koroks are not their natural form? Given that the Koroks can change form and it is stated that they changed forms to make child Link fit in better, we can assume that there wasn't a Link for the Koroks. This is the first Link they will encounter. This is why the Koroks aren't in their Kokiri form. 4) The overwhelming Sheikah tech is prominent because the Sheikah had just recently "vanished." This could be why their tech is still laying around. After landing, the Hylians (Link and Zelda) met more of the Sheikahs. Both looked up to the god of Hylia and help found the land of Hyrule. The Sheikah would take their place amongst the royal family as their protectors as Impa did in SS. 5) This could also explain why Link does not have his green tunic and why he is the SS Link. There's only one place to get a new green tunic after 100 years. At Skyloft. At the Knights Academy. Perhaps, Link's old green tunic was abandoned. He had just founded a new land with Zelda. He could have been the first Knight under her new rule. It would make sense for him to don armor. Hence, we could speculate that Link wears the armor in the trailer because that's the armor he may have worn after landing and finding Hyrule. 6) The Great Plateau looks like the Market because it is the market. Only it was established before OoT. Essentially, at the end of this game, the Market place as well as the Temple of Hylia and Hyrule Castle will be rebuilt. Everything matches because it's suppose to. Maybe this is the first version of Hyrule. Then in OoT, another 100 years or so later, Hyrule is rebuilt with similar placements. That's my theory on it.

    If the Temple of Time, Castle Town, and Hyrule Castle were built on a piece of land that was Skyloft, then it stands to reason that the entire chunk could be lifted and moved again. My guess is that over the millennia another larger, more fortified castle was constructed (the Hyrule Castle we see in BotW), and that the old castle became the "Eastern Abbey", likely serving as housing for the religious function associated with the Temple of Time and the worship of Hylia. Heck, it's even probable that the entire landmass was moved during a time of peace using advanced Sheikah technology, as a sort of preservation effort. That would also explain how the Shrine of Resurrection came to be there, as well as the huge walls surrounding the Great Plateau.

    It might be worth noting that in Twilight Princess, the ruins of Hyrule Market from Ocarina of Time also appear in the southwest corner of the map, in the form of the Sacred Grove. Perhaps the huge map in Breath of the Wild is supposed to line up more with that of Twilight Princess...? I mean, the TP map does also look a lot like OoT's at first glance, but when you look deeper it clearly isn't. Maybe the case is the same here. And that would mean that Breath of the Wild is actually exploring the region north of OoT/Zelda 1's Death Mountain range--the mid-to-northwestern area featured in The Adventure of Link.
    ALTERNATIVELY: the goddesses' intervention in the events of The Wind Waker's backstory may have had something to do with your suggested relocation of the castle. Do you remember how The Wind Waker showed Hyrule Castle perched upon a plateau jutting out of a large body of water? Well, your image in this video, lining up the BotW map with that of OoT, shows that the location of the Great Plateau is right next to the location of OoT's Lake Hylia.
    Can both of these things be coincidences? Maybe one, but both?

    I never really was much under the impression that SS's Temple of Time was the same one as the one in Castle Town. I mean, we're already shown there's been two, so I can imagine there having been a totally separate one constructed.
    Digressing from that though, I definitely see the Plateau being the same place as Castle Town.

      I feel like Ocarina's Northern Hyrule Castle Town is a totally different place altogether from the 'Central Hyrule Castle' presented in Twilight Princess, Link to the Past, Wind Waker, Zelda II, and other games. The Castle is almost never in the same place twice, but when it IS in the same place, it's in the center of the world, not the north. The North is usually reserved for Death Mountain. But I feel like that mountain that's clearly cracked in half in Breath of the Wild is not so much Death Mountain as it is Spectacle/Turtle Rock.

    Hey Zeltik,
    did you notice, when the amibo funktion of the slate is activated, that Link always is pointing a circle on the ground. When the WolfLinkAmibo is used, he is appering in that circle. So every other amibo should bring a companion of the size of that circle into the game. My guess for the guardian-amibo is, that Link gets help from a miniguardian, which you regular fight in the shrines. My english is not very good, but I hope you can understand, what I am trying to say

    I think the gods may have moved castle town not 100 years

    it was in the way of a divine beast laser or something.

    Love this!
    Also want to point out that Lon Lon Ranch is perfectly positioned in botw. If you turn the map around it all makes sense.
    Then in OOT if you stand in front of the Temple of Time, you can see a mountain behind it. Thats Mount Hylia.
    It's perfect!

    This theory also supports the idea of the leviathans dying in some battle- protecting certain areas. The gods themselves may have intwrvened by sending them down.
    Man i really want to see a prequel to thia game that explains this...
    And those unnatural clouds looks like steam. Maybe its being supported by aome device/ mechanism being powered by a HUGE ammount of water. The gods could have had it (the walls and the mechanism) constructed by the aquatic zoras who by lore developed proficient in stonework- due to the large ammounts of ore in their domain.
    Wait... This could be new hyrule and the flooded hyrule...
    THAT WOULD EXPLAIN THE TWO CASTLES.
    This also supports the vast ammounts of new bodies of water scattered across the land- cuz there is steam flowing out of this giant landmass

      Oh and i found some hylian text engraved under the statues on the great plateau wall- near where your front gate would be. Havent taken a shot at translating it but maybe youd want to check it out for your theory.

    Something nobody's talked about, is the location of death mountain in BOTW. If the Great Plateau was located where OOT castle town was, then deat Mountain would have to be closer to the temple of time. If Zeltik's theory proves to be true,, then it would make sense. Somehow the great plateau isn't where it's supossed to be.

    Try lining up the sacred grounds, in front of Hyrule castle, with the temple of time on the great plateau, both from the breath of the wild map. You'll find that the plateau butts up against Mount Gustav, and it's neighbor, as well as several raised land-forms on the other side of Hyrule field. I suppose that his was once the resting place of the great plateau, connecting these land forms across the upper half of Hyrule field. Most of the variance can be attributed to a century of erosion, but the important part is how the sacred grounds, which was once under the temple of time, is not only right where it should be, but uncovered once again.
    Though, my theory is that the plateau wasn't moved when Gannon returned, but a long time prior. As the new castle town in front of Hyrule castle would be on the plateau otherwise, instead of in ruins and crawling with guardians.

    I don't think we actually saw what happened to Hyrule castle and castle town at the end of the Ocarina of Time... the last we saw, Hyrule castle was destroyed, leaving pretty much nothing but a crater, and castle town was basically turning to ruins... but what happened when Ganondorf was sealed into the 'evil realm'? Link and Zelda were left seemingly floating in the sky, why weren't they at the remains of Hyrule castle where they were moments before? Maybe he whole area around the castle was sealed away with Ganondorf.That would have left a huge void in the landscape of Hyrule, triggering substantial tectonic movement to compensate, which would explain the changes to the landscape of Hyrule seen in BotW, but would have left nowhere for castle town to return to when Ganondorf broke free, causing it to simply drop onto the landscape, forming the great plateau.The clouds underneath could therefore be due to whatever the land mass landed on, which may not even be anything we've seen in Hyrule before, as it could have been formed by the tectonic movement. Hot, cold and aquatic areas could all produce some sort of cloud, created by smoke, condensation, or steam. It could also be a dust cloud from something like a mine. For all we know there could even be a more advanced industrial civilisation down there, with the clouds being the fumes generated by that.

    To add to the theory, maybe it was moved just to protect Link, who was healing in that chamber. Like maybe it was closer to where they were fighting (I think the castle?) and where Link almost diedn because I always thought it was weird that a half dead Link made it all the way to the Great plateau. So maybe it moved to protect the hero of Hyrule after Link was safe in the healing chamber.

    This is how i see this.
    In the legend of zelda franchise, nintendo has put a lot of easter eggs in order to reference other games. Structures that are not supossed to be there, paints about other game in the series, the majora's mask in link's house in ''a link between worlds'', and all that stuff...
    But, there is something that is not easily manipulated, and that's the races and the living creatures of hyrule. The cronology shows an incredible coherence in that point, so, it's so obvious to me, that this zelda takes place in the ''line of the future'' or ''line of the great sea'' if you prefer. This is so clear because the korog exist in this Hyrule, and theese creatures evolved from the kokiri in order to adapt themselves to the sea world.
    I truly think that is the most important think to know wich place this game takes in the cronology. But who knows. I can be wrong.
    Good theory anyway and good work.
    Note: I'm sorry if I made some mistake in my writing. I'm from Spain.

    Nice! I noticed the archway while watching a demo, and immediately thought of the one in the pathway to Hyrule Castle in OoT, and thought it could be used to support Teekay's Market ruins theory after reading it. Glad to see I'm not the only one who caught that.

    considering that the names link zelda and impa are more like titles i wouldn't be surprised if everytime they move something they call it the same thing, there's also the fact that it's been noted that some of the kings of hyrule actually used the triforce to conquer nearby lands and the hyrule in botw is the biggest one yet, forests can also slowly crawl across the land and the only thing that can't normally move is features like mountains and lakes... but hyrule seems to have a bedrock made of butter and the most active volcano ever so i guess those aren't static either lol.

    +Zeltik, would it be possible that Hyrule could have simply expanded its territory further, considering all of the theories involving a war between the Gerudo and the Hylians when Link warns Zelda in OoT after beating the game? Or, perhaps natural environmental changes like erosion, landslides, earthquakes, and/or floods occured, allowing for relocation or further expansion... Of course, now that I hear myself, I sound rather stupid. Your theory is probably best! Good work!

    Here's a thought - in the adult timeline hyrule castle was destroyed and in it's place Gannondorf built his tower over a large pit of lava which is totally absent from these ruins. Does this then mean that we can immediately disregard this game from being set in that timeline? The ruins we see here could be from his attempt to take the triforce by force... Downfall timeline maybe? Explains the ruins and Links revival at the start of the game...

    Reinforcement of this compared to the size disparity between OoT and BotW is the loading between areas in OoT. In that we see like run off while to fade unsure of actual distances. The shrine of resurection might also line up close-ish with the great fairy fountain near the castle as well.

    One thing that is bothering me is the castle. If it was the downfall timeline, Wouldn't it be Ganons castle instead of Hyrule castle standing there? Plus, look at the area that link starts off in. It looks like the Guardians were swarming the temple of time to either protect it or destroy it and got frozen in time. The plateau looks like it was moved away from the castle in a last effort to protect something from Ganon. We know that Hylia can move land to the sky so why not to another location. In my opinion, i think Zelda moved it out of reach from Ganon for a reason. Maybe to protect link in his slumber or to make him think that the master sword is still in the Temple of Time,but also leaving the master sword in place to hold Ganons power/magic in place. Looking at the location of where the plateau is, it looks as if it could have been moved to Kokiri forest because she knew he was from the forest. Remember back in OOT how it was almost a straight shot from the forest to the castle (obviously it looks bigger and different distance because of the upgrade in gaming systems) so maybe the market and half of Hyrule field was moved to protect people and Link.
    Now for the timeline. Its a bit strange but I think its pretty manageable. I think its after or during Majoras mask in the child timeline. What if the story of Majoras mask was all a dream while he was in stasis? It was slowly driving his mind into another world that is very similar to Hyrule and thats why he cant remember what is going on in the real world. They kill Ganondorf but it was too late because he already got his hands on the Triforce and calamity Ganon came forth.When this happens, Zelda freaks out, tells link to grab the master sword, but instead of trapping him inside of the temple for 7 years it puts him in a sleep because the goddess thinks it would be best if he slept for a longer period of time instead of 7 years. So Zelda is forced to replace the master sword and cannot seal the Calamity Ganon in the sacred realm because of links sleep.Could explain why he was sleeping in a cave almost right next to the temple of time in botw. Anyway.. She moves the plateau away from Ganon, but leaves the master sword in the ruins of where the temple of time once was so Ganon would think it was still in the temple of time. Also, We have seen Ganondorf materialize in twilight princess and turn right into Ganon because his body got smashed up. What if he did that in the child timeline and Zelda sealed him to the castle?
