I really advise against trying to leave the screws in the shell. A lot of the time the just end up with screws all falling out or popping out as you manipulate the cover. A better idea is to roughly draw the cover on a piece of paper or cardboard then poke the screws through the paper where they go on the actual part. Thus will keep them both secure and organized.
I have the EXACTLY THE SAME DS with the EXACT SAME PROBLEM! The chances of this happening surprised me.. now I can finally try to fix my blue Pokemon 2ds without having to stress on finding a place that fixes game consoles.. good job on your work your a real hero!
The reason the DS flashes and then turns off is because it Powers up, does a hardware check, and when the broken screen is checked, it fails and shuts off. It's the same with the folding ones when the hinge breaks and the ribbon cable gets damaged
I had the same issue with my old 2DS so yesterday, after whatching your video, i decided to order a new screen, it's arrived during the morning, so I watched carefully your video pausing every second and in the end I finally made it, now it's like brand new! Thank you so much Retro Future for inspiring people like me everyday to develop skills we could never imagine! You are the best :)
I love how solid the 2DS feels, despite it being the cheaper model in multiple ways. I guess I missed handhelds that were a single piece like the first GBA model or the PSP. The Switch is good with its single screen, but the Joycons still wobble around a bit. I think I'd enjoy a Switch mini but I play a lot docked so that's a no-go.
Elliot: If you're looking to get into repairs picking up a faulty 2ds is a great way to get into doing a repair. Me a few months ago: my laptop won't turn on. I'll just take apart the entire thing and see if I can find the problem and fix it. Have I done it before? No. Am I gonna do it anyway? Hell yeah.
Once you fix the consoles, what do you do with them? Asking for a friend interested in a Switch Lite. He doesn't have that much money, but I know your repairs are high quality.
Another great video, Elliot! I love the 2DS; definitely one of my favorite consoles to repair, as it's such an easy system to work with! One trick going forward to keep in mind, is to try to remove the left of the two ribbon cables for the screen, and then boot up the system with it removed (you can just hold the battery in place for a quick test). I've had multiple instances with a busted screen where the system would pop and shut off as you've noticed with this one. I've had other instances with a busted screen, where the system would come on and stay on, but the screen would be blank. In BOTH types of cases, by removing that left ribbon cable and powering it on, the system actually booted! Of course, in both cases the screen was busted; but this did allow the system to boot, and after booting, you'd clearly be able to see the broken screen through the backlights of the display itself. It's not a huge deal; as you've pointed out, it's most likely the broken screen. But it's a quick, easy way to do a quick sanity check before removing the entire board and swapping out the screen!
pretty straight forward cleaning and repair. I was finally able to order a set of your screwdrivers and I grabbed a plastic tweezer as well thanks so much man, keep up the great work
A great way to stop screws getting mixed up is to trace the outline onto paper, and then stab the screws into the paper where they would be on the devise. I used to do this with cardboard and bolts for when I rebuilt engines.
I had no idea this existed I literally purchased my daughter and myself 2 used Mario Maker edition 2ds's that look brand new for $75 got clear protective case from zeblabz all the way from the UK and tempered glass screen protectors they look great but apparently zeblabz had a crystal red protective case that I want and think will look great on the Mario Maker 2ds
The way on how he explains what to do/ what he’s doing, is so good, that for once, I understand everything. Only if his uploads were to get more views so other people could enjoy these videos too.
I always find it strange that so many people break their devices. We still have our original DSi, a 2DS, and and a New 2DSXL and they all function perfectly...I sold my GBC a few months back and it was 20 years old with zero issues. Yes, the kids use them all the time, too. I’l never understand. Haha
You make amazing vids, keep up the good work on your refurbishing! You also convinced me to swap shells and refurbish gameboys and ds and funnily enough my name is Elliot aswelll!
98% of me wants to send my Nintendo Wii to this guy to fix because my Wii refuses to read any of my disks and I need my childhood comfort during quarantine😭😂😂
Hey, love your videos, they're very informative and interesting. Just wondering, where do you buy your isopropyl alcohol from? I can't seem to find it anywhere!
There is a very good tutorial for soldering. There isn’t a lot of tutorials for soldering though. I plan to actually do a course on there myself to help people learn.
@@TheRetroFuture that'd be awesome, love your vids and personality, will definitely be looking forward to it! have any suggestions for other sources of info on soldering and/or small projects/consoles to try starting out on?
Brilliant video Elliot, hat is an easy console to fix! Also interesting to see the screens are built as one single unit. I hope the bad weather hasn’t impacted you guys too badly in Jersey? Stay safe.
Thank you Retro Future! I subscribed a while back and love all your videos! I used the Skill Share code for my free trial, and I appreciate it! Thank you for making videos!
Hey Elliot, I got into collecting and repairing GBs because of your videos :) Just wanted to ask if a Gameboy Advance SP with Screen Burn-in still repairable by replacing the polarizer? If so, can you do a video on it? I haven't seen one on youtube so I'm assuming it's not possible. Thanks!!!
Very nice and straightforward video! Since the link to the screwdriver is not working anymore, what screwdriver specifically was used for taking out all of the screws? And what size should I be looking for?
i love your videos! i really want to get into restoring and fixing old consoles etc, but i have to say you remind me of the bad guy in killing eve season 2 so much
So... Generally agree with the fast forwarding the assembly, but you actually sped through the actual process of adding the new screen itself, which was kind of the point of the video, to my understanding.
Probably shouldn’t use the same cloth to wipe the table and then the screen. If ever there were pieces of metal or glass shards or solder, they can stick to the cloth and scratch the screen upon wiping.
If the screen broke due to abuse would it still be considered faulty at that point? or just destroyed. I personally think buying a broken system from someone, you're just rescuing it from their destructive home and ownership.
i really want to resurrect a broken 2ds to use as its the most comfortable handheld out there imo, unfortunately german ebay very rarely has any good deals on consoles
Really appreciate the video but I wish you could have told us how to re assemble it. The top and l and r shoulder buttons are a pain in the pass to put back in
In your opinion for someone who would like to get into video game repairs and flipping for a little profit. What consoles and handhelds would you recommend are the best bang for your buck? Also how much do you look to pay for each of the consoles that will make it something you can profit from versus just break even or lose? Thanks! Love your videos btw I happened across your channel within the last month and have watched almost all of your videos now.
I had the same problem, and this video really helped me out, but when I turned it on, it seemed like the joystick was going haywire and moving all around and I don’t know why. Help me please!

I would just put a piece of masking tape over each screw hole until I'm ready to reassemble
He did just fine.
@@dauntless78 actually he had to flip the cover over and all the screws fell out....
What a good idea
Elliot, thank you for being the first person to introduce me to game console repair. I really appreciate it.
Skyler Hall thank you for watching!
My favorite hobby only started two weeks ago and it has gone well just refurbed my old game sp change battery buttons and screen
not gonna lie this might be the best looking 2DS I've ever seen, better than the pink and lavander Japan 2DS
for me, it's tied with the transparent black 2ds
thank you so much for your honesty

I have the electric blue 2DS with the black side trim. It's great looking.
Sponsor away, bud. TH-cam isn't paying anybody's bills anymore.

@JamesM9794 So a simple replacement of the top screen on the original 3ds will fix it?
@@asadislam3698 if the top screen is obviously broken, that would be the first thing I would fix. But I would also do a little more reasearch

Having a skillshare sponsorship actually makes a lot of sense for the context of your channel lol
I love that the quality of the videos is superior every time you upload:

When ever Elliot says “this video is sponsored by” I always fear he’ll say “This video is sponsored by raid shadow legends”

The Switch In U.S.A. : $299.99
Tbh the joycons are pretty bad, mine are pretty glitchy
Pure Genius. Absolute Class. Spectacular.
Zulpher thanks!
The 2ds is very interesting. Depending on how you look at it, it either has the smallest or biggest screen(s) of any ds.
Hot damn, the 2DS looks like the most service-friendly handheld with the DS name on it! My first attempt to fix a OG 3DS was bumpy at best.
I highly recommend an ice-cube tray for screw management. you can work in reverse order with screws too!

Good to hear!
Just watching someone do a job and listening to calm music can be the trick, this channel seems to have a lot of that, thankfully
Faulty Joycons are also something that’s really nice to get into repairs for too. If you have the right tools and are decently patient that is.
1:30 the reason the 2DS will pop is usually because it can't recognize the backlight, I had this same issue with my $20 2DS I bought from eBay.
