Considering how cheap that replacement screen + bezel was, I think it's a standard cheapy LCD screen, not the Vita's original OLED. I wonder if they make replacement OLED screens? That'd be very nice....
You can find new, replacement OLED ones but they're really rare. Almost all of the new ones are just LCDs but honestly LCD screen quality has improved so much since the Vita came out in 2011 that I'm not even sure the original OLED screen actually looks any better than a new LCD one. Not to mention there are now plugins for the Vita that allow you to change the saturation, contrast etc on an LCD Vita screen which should improve things even further. Buying a new OLED screen replacement is probably more trouble than it's worth these days as they suffer from many heat related issues that really hamper their longevity and they don't really offer a (much) better image quality than a brand new LCD anymore. This is coming from an OLED Vita owner that loves that particular screen.
@@nsp6590 Idk man, I’m a Vita1000 owner from day one and I’ve yet to see an lcd that rivals the Vita’s OLED. Close but not quite, at least not in a handheld device. The LCD Vita certainly doesn’t even come close imo. Saturation and contrast still blows me away, and with the Vitabrite plugin that bumps up the apparent brightness it’s just incredible, even to this day. Every time I use it (almost every day) I have the thought “damn that’s nice “. Haha I just hope it lasts for a long time because I’d be devastated if it were to fail. Having said all that, you do make a good point. LCDs have come a long way since the days of the PSP. Or even the days of the Vita, for that matter.
@@MrCumstein I also love the OLED screen on the 1000 no doubt and it is much better than the screen on the 2000 of course. The plugins really do help the LCD screen on the 2000 though and it gets pretty close to the OLED although it's not quite there. So really which one is "better" depends on whether one is ok with sacrificing some reliability for the crisp image. Now since I wrote my comment my opinion has changed slightly because I have found ways to preserve the OLED more effectively (lowest brightness setting and a plugin that allows the brightness to drop even lower than stock for night viewing) and honestly the 1000 is still my favourite model because of the screen alone. But it really can be a pain to maintain because screen burn-in is a genuine issue on any OLED screen as old as that of the Vita. Newer ones don't suffer nearly as much but the Vita indeed does. That coupled with the fact that the 2000 has micro-USB charging rather than the proprietary port on the 1000 and the improved battery life, and I do think that the 2000 is the better choice for a newcomer to the Vita scene 2 years after Sony stopped producing the device. However, the 1000 is definitely not the "wrong" choice by any means. The screen really is beautiful.
@@nsp6590 Yeah true, I didn’t consider the proprietary charge connection on the 1000 because that’s really not an issue for me. I suppose what I was trying to say is that I love my 1000 greatly and the slim would be a step backwards for me. I would also agree the 2000 would be the way to go for newcomers. For people that have never seen the OLED, the LCD would look beautiful, and they’d have no idea what they’re missing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the LCD is bad by any means. I baby mine as well and it’s working as well as it did when new, with no sign of burn-in at all. I use it at it’s brightest setting because that’s when the OLED comes to life for me. If you can use it with the screen dimmed all the way then more power to you, but I don’t think I can. I’d just reach for one of my other retro handhelds instead, which I often do. I try not to use the Vita exclusively because I don’t want to wear it out. With over 7 years of use I must be doing something right.
A while ago i found a broken Vita on the 3.60 firmware so i bought it for my girlfriend and i fixed its broken screen problem .. now i bought one for my friend. Both were around 30 euro. I had so much fun fixing the 1st one. Cant wait for the display to arrive for the second one!
I never would have guessed that the vita would be this consumer repair friendly. Looking at it from the outside it looks as difficult to repair as a smartphone but that looks easy. I ordered a replacement screen for mine because I accidentally cracked it in my car. I'm excited to repair it.
Your comment regarding the screws not going in as nice... I suspect the screws are self tappers and there is likely NO thread in the plastic posts in the replacement part. You are feeling the first cut of fresh thread.
Earlier today I was considering at buying a smashed vita, it has a really bad broken screen. Thanks to your video, now I can considerate a little better if I buy it and replace the screen
I'm not sure if im correct, but a lot of the sub £25 screens ive seen now do not seem to be OLED, I think they're a cheaper 3rd party LCD, looking much like the Vita slim. Be careful if you're replacing these screens and expect them to be OLED, because I dont think they are. The OLED screens are incredible.
Great fix of the Vita, it's a great system and was underrated as far as I'm concerned. It was marketed terribly in the West as an on the go replacement to your PS4 or PS3, but it was more a niche gmaers paradise with awesome japanese style games, such as Senran Kagura, Persona, 999, Digimon Cyber Sleuth, and much much more games like that
my screen also has that smashed screen issue from accidentally leaving it in a carrying bag I tend to drop with no care, thanks for showing the screen replacement process
What screwdriver did you use for the wireless card? The teardowns I see have #00 phillips, but my vita has something different...smaller and star shaped. Havent figured out what the bit is.

I attempted this over 2 years ago using this specific video as a guide but unfortunately I only got up to 8:22 (my previous comment is still on here from when I first started the project) when one of the screws that holds down the 3G module, refused to come out. I tried myself but unfortunately it started to round out so I left it and took the whole console to a phone shop guy in my area who I knew would have the right tools to try and get it out. He basically made it worse to the point a screwdriver wouldn't even fit into the space. I ended up throwing the whole project to one side as I had no idea where to even begin to rectify the issue and I didn't want to pay silly money for someone to repair it for me. I saved this video in my "Watch Later", knowing that one day I would eventually get to the bottom of the repair. Procrastination due to lack of direction took over and I neglected it for for all this time. Once or twice I would have a fiddle with it to see if I could make magic happen but all attempts fell flat...Until tonight😂 I finally had a crack at it and as of 03/10/23 (or 10/03/23 for all the Americans) at approx 11:30pm, I finally managed to get the screw out using a kitchen knife; Not ideal but I grinded a slit across the screw head so I could tap a flathead driver in and screw it out but I guess the friction of the knife jolted it enough so it undone itself. I finished the repair and now my Vita lives again 🎉 Your guide is top notch mate. I know i'm a few years late but keep it up🔥much appreciated. Well deserved Like has been left on your video
i remember when i had a ps vita.. i got it when my older brother stole and broke my 2ds so he had to sell all of his stuff to buy me a replacement, but then my dad forced me to get a ps vita (which i loved) and then sold it 2 years later for a fucking broken 2ds that didnt work because my dad didnt check the 2ds before buying it, and i couldnt trade back in the 2ds and i died inside.
A big thing for me is the original Vita's use OLED screens which are early OLED's with short life spans. I'm hoping one day there will be screen mods that will allow the original model to use a longer lifespan screen.
I purchased a new screen and front piece but when they arrived, they weren’t actually glued together. Can’t wait to figure out how to solve that problem..
You should have replaced the back and battery as well. I have the original oled 3g model as well as a slim. The oled 3g battery doesn't last much more than half of what it used to. Luckily, I don't have to replace anything, but the battery. Both Vitas look brand new. I take very good care of my stuff. I don't even have have screen protectors.
Just curious how long did it take in real time to do the replacement I’m asking cause I recently bought one that’s scratched to hell so I figured I would buy one of the blue shells that are being sold around

Haha
I just hope it lasts for a long time because I’d be devastated if it were to fail.
@@nsp6590 What’s the name of the plug-in you’re using?
A while ago i found a broken Vita on the 3.60 firmware so i bought it for my girlfriend and i fixed its broken screen problem .. now i bought one for my friend. Both were around 30 euro. I had so much fun fixing the 1st one. Cant wait for the display to arrive for the second one!
Ifixit has tear down guides for most of these devices, will help with your hidden screws and such. Has helped me a ton.
I never would have guessed that the vita would be this consumer repair friendly. Looking at it from the outside it looks as difficult to repair as a smartphone but that looks easy. I ordered a replacement screen for mine because I accidentally cracked it in my car. I'm excited to repair it.
The psvita was like the switch lite before it came out really
John: here you go
Me: you fix it
Your comment regarding the screws not going in as nice...
Great video. I'd love to see more vita fixes on your channel.
Great video mate. Would love to see you venture into consoles or even switches, I know they are quite a bit pricier.
That was awesome to watch. Real question though is how the hell did the screen break. The Vita is like a Nokia phone. A total tank
Love your videos man, keep it up!
I have a perfect condition PS Vita .. Screen protected and custom vinyl wrapped since day one. That's collecting years of dust in a drawer somewhere.
Dude, sell it if you're not using it
im looking to replace my own vita screen . where did you buy the replacement screen ?
Aliexpress
What screwdriver did you use for the wireless card? The teardowns I see have #00 phillips, but my vita has something different...smaller and star shaped. Havent figured out what the bit is.
I fucking love this channel! Thanks for being awesome.
hey i just found your channel and have been watching every single repair you do. just a quick question do you ever ground yourself for doing any of the repair / refurbish videos , and have you ever shorted something just by opening it and not being grounded ?
keep up the great work thanks to you ill be doing a back light /bivert mod on my original gameboy dmg. lets hope i can do it properly xD
I don’t ground myself when doing the repairs! Have never shorted anything so far from it!
ur videos on fixing and cleanings things are as good as asmr lol
Is the replacement screen OLED as well? This replacement looks like something I could do.
The OLED screen doesn't age well.
I finished the repair and now my Vita lives again 🎉
Your guide is top notch mate.
How's the screen compared to the OLED screen? Debating on replacing mine someday...I hate those spots at night/dark screens.
I love you videos but this one in particular made me super happy. The Vita is my favorite handheld of all time.
I am glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting! Where did you found the replacement part of psvita?
A big thing for me is the original Vita's use OLED screens which are early OLED's with short life spans. I'm hoping one day there will be screen mods that will allow the original model to use a longer lifespan screen.
Im surprised the screen only costs 18 pounds tbh. Is it an amoled screen or is the replacement lcd?
Yaaay! Elliot is back on Playstation scene!
I'm surprised you haven't picked up a Vita yet!
I purchased a new screen and front piece but when they arrived, they weren’t actually glued together. Can’t wait to figure out how to solve that problem..
Great job! Looks great. Now do a video on modding it since TheFl0w just dropped that 3.69/3.70 hack.
Check out tech james. He made a easy way to do it.
"£18 expensive repair" lol!
I hope you reply to this. Where can I buy this screen and also the back? Can you provide links?
I needed this. I got the front and rear shell replacement parts. Thanks!
Where did you buy please reply I need this too
My Vita fell off my hands months ago and the LCD broke (went from blue spots to complete blackout now)
Is this vid relatable for me?
I know this is an original model, but the Vita slim has to be the most easily repairable handheld console I've ever had.
How do you get the screws back in all the way? I've got a crampy hand from trying to get them back in with such a teeny weeny screwdriver.
Please just avoid using metal tweezers to unplug power cables. Could damage something if inexperienced or if you make a mistake
Hi there! That is OLED screen, right? Where did you get the part, if I can ask? Is the quality same as original? Thanks,
I wonder if the replacement screen is OLED like the original or if it's just a regular LED screen?
I believe it's an LED screen. The first one I searched up was an LED. Just an assumption but most likely!
The vita 1000 dont turn in with a lcd ...
Lol! My Vita has the Gravity rush logo burned in
Your great at repairing things! I wish I could do the same with my psp
Nicely done - another Vita lives another day!
I've been waiting for this video since yesterday!
Just curious how long did it take in real time to do the replacement I’m asking cause I recently bought one that’s scratched to hell so I figured I would buy one of the blue shells that are being sold around
Not sure if you intend to actually use Vita, but as of right now every existing Vita can be jailbroken. You can put in a micro SD card with a cheap adapter, play any Vita/PSP/PS1 game, play homebrews, emulators up ti N64, etc. Vita is awesome!
Just fixed mine today. Feeling proud. Wasn’t that difficult but the screws were a bastard.
