There needs to be a list of modifications that a new amarok owner should do. Egr, dpf and belt tensioner, now I’ll need a tune.
    Thanks for the information!

2017 v6 highline. Thanks for this video. Mine does exactly the same thing. Reversing my 16 foot boat up my driveway that has a slight incline is painful. My previous amarok a 2lt 2016 canyon did not do this when reversing the same boat. VW should do the right thing and fix any effected vehicles or at least let people know which ones have the issue.

Some guy on another post recommended that you just hold down the traction control button for 3 seconds and then you are good to reverse. I don't personally know but if someone could confirm that would be good.

Great info here mate. I've always been a manual guy. I'm keen on an Amarok - pretty impressive vehicles. As tempting as the impressive 8 speed auto can be, I think I'll pick up a manual. At least you never overheat your gearbox, and when you put it in gear and release the clutch, the wheels spin! And you get low range.

That's very good point you brought up.
What I can't understand is why on earth they would go to deliberately cripple their vehicle in reverse with coding??
They did this deliberately and it points out there might be a very good reason they did this.
The question is: what is the reason?
You don't do this kind of thing knowing it's gonna hurt your reputation for no reason.

    Hello Rhett
I'm currently searching to buy a used 2014 Amarok.
I want to use this truck for commuting (50 km/day), carrying construction materials ~200kg on the back of the car (once/week), towing farm stuff 1-2 tones (once/2 weeks), towing sand or wood 2-3 tons (4 times/year).
On summer time I will use the truck on 90% tarmac and max 10% gravel + off-road (this 10% for farm work with some heavy load + towing).
On winter time it will be used 95% on tarmac, but consider that in Romania (my country) the snow remains a lot on the road, plus I have to travel 200 m on gravel to get out on the road every time I leave home. I don't want to remove snow every time it snows (we have snow from early December until late March).
I also plan to make some montaine trips 6 times/year with some off-road (not hard core). I have some experience with off-road since childehood.
The big question. Wath transmision should I choose?
I'm inclined to manual gearbox with shiftable 4motion with low gear ratio and rear lockable differential.
    Thanks for help.

    • @rhetth-s8082

Well, if you choose the manual gearbox then there is no reverse issue. If you buy an auto and plan to do 4wding or towing then you might want to plan around tuning it. If you plan to do serious 4wding with a trailer, then i dont recommend the auto.

I saw that you do some serious off-road. Do you think it would have been better for you to have a manual gearbox with low gear (reductor).
At the manual I think that I made wear the clutch on havy deauty. The dual mass fly-weel clutch it is sensible at VW.
Wath do you think about the eventual problems of the ZF gearbox on havy deauty? It will not be hard for me to do a tuning (romanian servise are preaty good).

why couldn't VW just program a 1 or 2 sec low torque delay after shifting the gear leaver just to give the auto time to fully build pressures up in both forward or reverse.
I haven't been stuck in mine yet but do find the sudden increase in torque one you hit 4km/h in reverse annoying. I know its also got a speed limiter in reverse..
but i guess its still more power to the wheels in reverse than the older Hilux in hi range..
the worse was a BA falcon manual ute. was like 3rd gear. felt like it was geared to do over 100km/h in reverse

This was taken from the video titled "JTech Amarok Flash Tune - Fixing the Auto Reverse Issue"...
"A stock amarok still has reverse limitations that can be overcome with an ECU Remap.
It turns out, that the real issue is because of the heavy duty torque converter, as well as the gear ratios.
As the torque converter is so heavy duty, a stock Amarok doesn’t make enough torque to get the torque to enter its “coupling” phase, and effectively transfer enough torque to the wheels.
This can be altered with an ecu remap, by raising the torque limits, injection timing, injection quantity and “drivers wish” maps among others."
IMHO, everyone who cares about their motor and is out of warranty should have a remap anyway. Some footage from this video with the reverse working would have been nice, however, head over to the other video and you see a before and after tune in the sand.

    • @rhetth-s8082
      @rhetth-s8082  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The truth is the opposite of what you theorise. I did various research, awareness raising, testing, videos, etc, which inspired the Jtech video. Most of the footage in my video above was created before the Jtech video. One or more of my videos features the Jtech vehicle itself, before Jtech was created and the vehicle was signwritten. If you look closely at the Jtech video, you will see my vehicle in the background, i was there at the time the Jtech video was created.
There is also a problem with your analysis of the way the torque converter works. There is no such thing as a "coupling phase". Torque converter's are capable of transmitting torque from below idle onwards. They do not need much input rpm in order to start transmitting, and during the reverse issue the engine and one side of the torque converter can reach far more than enough rpm to be developing and transmitting full torque. They are not like a centrifugal pump that requires flow in order to express power, they specifically work in the absence of flow of that kind, the torque converter is a sealed unit. The reverse issue happenned to me many, many times, it is clear from the operation of the vehicle that the engine is not developing 420Nm at zero wheel speed, and there is plenty of other evidence that limiting happens at zero wheel speed. Jtech himself knows this and has written it publicaly.

Very good and informative video. Thanks.
Question, I have my Amarok mapped already and have found reversing up a slope heavily loaded a bit of an issue to where it would not spin the wheels, just rev.... Is the gearbox reverse a separate type of tune and can it be done to reverse gear only or is it for all forward gears also?

What do you think about throttle controllers (Idrive..?) for REDUCING TURBO LAG (most importantly), while still under warrantee..? (does this alone help at all with the reversing issue..?)
It sounds like I'm sure you'd know someone with an Amarok who's tried/got one..

If you train your mind and ankle to work faster when desired you have the best of both worlds, you have full flexibility, unlike a throttle controller where you have to change programs, and can easily be in the least appropriate program for any given situation that arises.

Clown. Reverse mine everyday with over 2t and my driveway is at least 30 degrees incline

You do that dressed as a clown? Auto or manual? Tuned or std?
A number of people have had the problem of not being able to reverse heavy trailers up their driveway. It made them feel like a clown for buying the car but its not actually their fault. A 2t trailer is well below the rated capability. The reverse issue is something where if you stay just below the reverse capacity you can think its kinda okay, but load it a bit more and then people realise. People typically overestimate road angles, maybe your 30 degrees is actually 20 degrees, how about you measure it and get back to us.

I know its a bugger, i dont want it to be true either, but its true. Just because it hasnt happenned to you yet, does not make you an expert. There is a lot of evidence in the videos, its compelling stuff. Since you say it hasnt happenned to you, dont stress, all good.

I have no allegiance to VW - I have recently ordered a new Amarok but I did some homework. I suspect VW have given users the option to have a controlled vehicle that works within supply specs with the ability to do what you want (see th-cam.com/video/2Sgqtu0XPLI/w-d-xo.html) if you want to climb 45 degree slopes knock yourself out - but your wear the cost - as you would with any modification to spec.

The main people that have forced VW to refund them are owners with a trailer they need to reverse up a steep driveway.

I wish! Ha ha. Why do you think Ford? What about Toyota, can you approach them for funding for me? Backup plans could include Isuzu and Mazda.

I got bogged in my v6 in sand and couldn’t reverse to get my self out and I wasn’t even bogged really bad. Had to get snatched out.
I love everything about my amarok but that part is just shit.
Sad part is I paid 1200 for a tune before the trip and still couldn’t reverse the bloody thing. 🤌

    • @rhetth-s8082
      @rhetth-s8082  ปีที่แล้ว

I suggest you contact your tuner and ask them if they removed the reverse torque limiting and if not ask them to remove it. They should have removed it as part of the tune.
