Model Railroad Fatigue

  • In this video I talk about my anxiety about model railroading and the issues I have with feeling over especially when I compare myself to the best like Mindheim, Quebec and New England, Joe Parker over at Pixle Depot and Top Railroad. It's very hard for a hack like my self to hold a candle to professionals like those guys.

    Keep in mind...
    1. It is you railroad!
    2. It is a life time hobby -- there is no schedule!
    3. It is like eating an elephant - - one bite at a time!

I have been at this hobby for 50 years. Sometimes I get fed up, bored or just want to do something else for a while. But sooner or later i come back to it refreshed. Sometimes its three months but its often been longer breaks due to family circumstances or just being busy with other things. So there's lots of good advice here just do your thing and enjoy.

Thank you so much this is the first big time set up I've had, and is going to be the best I like it the best. I've put together others, but this is the best track plan I've come up with and the best one functionally I'm actually really excited for it and I keep telling my wife it'll be really cool when it's done so to speak. Actually I think were going to have a party at the house when the mainline is completed a ribbon cutting serimony if you will.

First, don't compare yourself or your layout to others. People have a wide variety of experience, budgets and time.
Second, you started a layout to have fun I imagine. So have fun doing what you like. I like industry too, and rail yards, and bridges. The scenery looks nice when finished but to me it looks intimidating.
Third, if your current layout is intimidating you could always scale it back - and I don't mean ripping out any bench work. Just pull up some track and structures on the one side and move them to the othe in the side that you have a lot accomplished on. You'd need to rework the plan some, but a smaller area of focus might bring back the joy and motivation.
If I were you, I'd do number 3. I'm in the planning stage of an N Scale layout. It started as 3x7, and then I started adding stuff. I thought I should have a nice rail yard with nice classification tracks and Diesel maintenance facilities. Then an intermodal Yard, then a staging yard. Pretty soon my 3x7 had expanded to TWO 4X8 sheets of plywood.
I remind you I'm a boy in the planning stage - thank God! I was getting nervous and didn't think I was motivated enough to bite off that much. This dream layout was a lot to do!!
So I have gone to something similar to the 3x7 (door size) layout. It's going to be 4x8. If I get a lot of that complete I can start phase two - WHEN I'M READY.
I hope this is good food for thought. I wish you happy modeling and stay motivated!

You cannot expect or should expect to be an “expert” on day one. The enjoyment is learning all the great aspects that go into this fantastic hobby. To quote Lance Mindheim from his book ‘Model Railroading As Art’. “There is an audience of one, that being yourself”. “Nobody else needs to be pleased other than yourself”
Once I read that my whole attitude to the way I approached this hobby, after 55 years of modelling, changed completely! I no longer worry or care about what other people think or say. And since then I have enjoyed the hobby I love more than ever.
I watch Lance and Joe and Boomer and I look to take just one tiny thing they show and try that on my layout. I don’t try to recreate their layout because then it would not be MY layout.
Learn from others but, for crying out loud, be yourself and enjoy the hobby any way you want to!
    Cheers Brendon

Patience Padawan. At times, I have shared similar feelings to the ones you expressed in your video. Please do not compare yourself to other TH-camrs or modelers. You are doing excellent work and making a comparison is not helpful. The part of your video that I most liked, was when you started explaining what the industries were, what the trucks were and how everything worked. I could tell that was your passion. I look forward to further videos from you on the progress of your layout. Forgive the cliches. Take this one step at a time. There will be a moment when the trains run to your satisfaction. Meanwhile, enjoy the journey. You will get where you want. Work at it regularly, you will see progress. If something isn't working, fix it. There's no crime in that. Even the best modelers make or made mistakes. I make them all the time. The modelers you were talking about don't always mention their mistakes or what they learned from them. Mistakes are learning opportunities and are not to be feared. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work, I look forward to future videos. Can't wait to hear how the sharing the room with the cat goes! 😂

My advice to you would be don't get too ahead of yourself. Make a game plan and do it in stages, don't try to do 5 things at one time. Draw the layout that you would like to see versus trying to freelance your layout. Then move to your buildings, etc, or whatever order you would like. Also don't fall to the pressures of TH-cam trying to get videos out. You don't have to document everything you do. Take your time and have fun, it's just a hobby meant for you to enjoy in your free time.

Totally agree, I think as you work your way through this layout you’ll find the style that ultimately suites you best. The great thing about model railroading is that the purpose of layout is to satisfy you as its owner. And whether that entails synthesising massive mountains, keeping it simple with a grass mat, or something in between I am sure you will find your balance. You clearly have a knack for industrial modelling and track planning, and I think you will do great with scenery when it gets to that point. There are always plenty of resources like forums and TH-cam videos to learn and be inspired by. Good luck with your layout and keep doing your thing!

I absolutely understand where you're coming from modeling these things can be an extremely overwhelming task but the most important thing I think is to take everything one step at a time. For example I would start by laying out the majority of the track you have to envision what you want the general layout to be, from there just take everything in small sections like a small depot or something. If you put more time into one particular element of the layout it will absolutely pay off in the long run. I think this layout has alot of potential and I really hope you continue modeling and more importantly enjoy doing it :)

The more popular model railway (I'm British) TH-cam channels are great but they can get too perfectionist and don't give you any idea how much hard work has to go into things. The fact is even if you think your modelling is full of faults when you invite a friend to look at it, they'll be amazed. A model is a representation of the real thing, not a perfect replica.

Sounds like you have put a lot of effort into thinking about your layout and you obviously enjoy planning a working light industrial setup. Get the roads sketched in so the trucks have somewhere to go. My layout is still a work in progress after 15 years. I keep moving the buildings around and changing the track setup. I might live with that for a year running the trains and then realising it is not what I want and move things again. The scenary is just sheets of ballast cut and placed under the tracks and used as roads and car parks that can be moved to follow the change in track design. Fields are just sheets of grass mat and fences that can be moved in the same way. Run your trains and enjoy it.
