I got one of these back in 2016 when i had cancer didnt feel like playing with till the mirning after my brother set it up for me and i watched from my hospital bed i still have the train today
My parents gave me this set a long time ago back in the early to mid 2000s in the old version. I will tell you this. Even though it is the same set as the old one, the engine looks so much better than the old one. The paint on the Niagara looks more cleaner and sharper and the details look more finer than the older version. The rolling stock looks more sharper and finer compared to the old ones. Also, the power supply is the modern one from Bachmann. The power supply that came with my old set had a black life-like style power supply. In conclusion, it is nice to see this set get updated to modern times. My only gripe with this set is that it is not DCC-ready.
I've seen a few of your reviews on train sets. One thing I really appreciate is that you do a great job of showing us the product in great detail, without any commentary. You let us decide what's good or not good,, or what we like don't like about the product. Kudoos!
This train set is such a long-runner, and I don't just mean the number of freight cars. Bachmann began making it in the mid-to-late 1980s, and originally it used a figure-8 track plan (with 90-degree crossing), and then when E-Z Track was introduced they switched to a large oval of that. Then the locomotive began to get better in quality (from a pancake motor to a decent 3-pole can motor with all-wheel drive) and the freight cars had body-mount knuckle couplers added.
there are three versions of this train set the one from 80's with the crappy axles and gears that shattered all the time, the version from the 2000's still with the splitting exles then there is the version from 2018 and up with the better exles and improvements, you could put the most recent wheels sets from the modern version into the older version.
@@1964catt Or you could get 3D-printed replacements for the gears and axle centers. In fact, you would _have_ to do that (assuming the split axles were even broken in the first place) because the modern wheelsets would short the split-chassis versions.
The UP did have 4-8-4s in the form of the FEFs, but to my knowledge Bachmann doesn’t have an FEF tooling in their HO range. So they used the Niagara tooling, and just replaced the tender
I had this set a long time ago, MAN this is probably the absolute best value train set and certainly best starter train set there ever was. 9 car train, powerful good locomotive, and plenty of track to start. If anyone wants to get into the hobby, THIS and the Empire Builder in N scale are THE SETS to get.
@@CovBert I think it's a good set to start with but I'd also look into the bachmann digital commander set. You get two engines that are dcc controlled for nearly the same price
Oh yes. I remember having this train set back in december 2005 and i loved it, especially how the steam locomotive looked. It was the best train set i've ever had. Unfortunately, it got wrecked by someone and it was no longer working and i was really fucking pissed off by that. However, 11 1/2 years later, i had another chance, i bought a new overland limited train set and it went pretty well even though there were some small issues with the steam locomotive. i was just happy that i got another chance with this train set since the one back then was destroyed. Now i get to play with it without any annoying problems in the way.
Thats just a niagara but with no smokedeflectors and with union pacific tender Heres proof: Look at the smokebox it kinda looks like niagara if you look in the google, Tender of the challenger or 5511, Painted union pacific greyhound The creator actually didnt painted the loco, the factory did
You can always fit in a Railroad or Railway as we say in the UK. Even a micro layout can be heaps of fun. I spent an enjoyable evening with my boys watching a train go round. Even my brother and one of his sons joined in. It's not easy but well worth it.
If I ever get one of those things, the first thing I’d do would be to paint the engine into a New York Central paint scheme. Two of my closest friends both have the Niagaras from this set, and I’ve volunteered to help one of them repaint theirs into a proper NYC paint scheme.
If you, by any chance, lose the logs on the Great Northern flat car, you can always buy some Slim Jim or Jack Link's Beef Sticks, cut them in thirds, and load 'em. 😆
I wish, I wish I had my old train set back. Trains, depot, houses, trees, cars, a bridge, people, all sorts of HO scale town models, even working street lights. All by the age of 13. But then carefully packed it away. Then my older brother sneaked into my bedroom closest and stole it all for his 1st born. I was only 14. The youngest of 6. I put up a stink of course. He wound up giving me $200 for all of it. Today ? Maybe 3 or $4000. I know, forgive and forget. Well it seems difficult to do either. Enough said.
man i would really love to get one. I really love trains and I had a toy train when I was child with lighta on it. Turning off my room light and watching it go around.
I mean with nine wagons and a locomotive the size of Russia what do you expect. Plus the massive loop of track, I just wish more of the track had 1 or 2 points, enough for a inglenook shunting challenge.
This set is jaw-dropping cool. I remember being so jealous of my friend that received similar sets (at a lower quality actually, but still) from their parents. Now I can afford something like this but I don't have the space in my 1/43 scale collection. So if in the past I used to admire these train sets at my friend's home, now I am doing the same, but on TH-cam 😅😅
I've noticed on every review at least 2 of the drivers wobble or are out of round, which in my experience causes things to go out of Guage or vibrate loose. Better Q.C. tooling seems to be an ongoing dilemma with Bachmann. The real high end stuff is better but I have a few of these and all have some minor fault here and there. As far as what you pay they perform more than adequately, and with minor care and adjustments should last a lifetime. Do not over oil , as this causes all your

Tip for the future from an experienced modeler: build your train from the back forwards. It's easier to build them that way.
Why are you pushing against the train while running it full ahead ? Does that mess up the wheels and motor ?

What was with the repeatedly holding the engine back with your finger, to the point that we barely got to see it actually running?
