One great thing my instructor learned was the rule of calculating the cloud base. The calculation is done by subtracting the dew point temperature from the actual temperature and multiplying it by 400. This gives us in your situation a cloud base of 1200 feet. When I then heard you correcting the ATIS and stating that it was actually 1200 feet it blew my mind and just showed how amazing stuff you instructors teach us!
Hey man just wanted to let you know you’ve given me the courage to pursue aviation, it’s been my dream since childhood when my dad flew little airplanes with me. I’m 10 hours into PPL and loving it. Welcome to the skies!!!
I feel like I'm in the plane with you, the way you talk while single pilot is so natural and conversational. I can forget that you're talking to yourself the whole time.
It’s great to see a true, honest IFR approach where you remind yourself to trust your instruments and not the misleading signals from your brain. Too many youtube pilots pretend that’s not a real issue on an approach.
I liked you flight instructing yourself. Mentally that's what we should be doing anyway, you just verbalized it. I don't love IFR the way you do, but it's such an important skill to have I'm going to complete my Instrument training come hell or high water.
Got my instrument ticket mid March, bought my first plane (!!!) mid April, a 1960 Comanche 250, it’s got enough avionics to stay current with but is due for annual now... a cluster of activity to learn my plane, stay current after annual, then major avionics upgrades in August... 🤯 thanks for putting out this video and showing the importance of staying your best!
Thanks for posting this. I'm about 20 hours deep in my instrument training with only 75 hours total. I loved hearing you talk through your strategy to stay on course and glideslope. It's hard for me right now.
Been really loving your IFR videos especially since I just recently started my IFR training.. They have been a huge help. Appreciate all the effort you put into the channel!
Thank you sir for that lovely video. I am a new subscriber as of 2 weeks ago. I am a CFII (primary job clinical pharmacist) in MI. In my 36 years of flying and 14 years of teaching, keeping instrument current is my biggest barrier. Chair flying approaches in the wintertime is my cup of tea due to the icing levels. With the disgusting weather in MI, I had 5 actual holds one week before my CFII check ride. You may label yourself as entertaining but this little old CFII has learned some very valuable tips through your videos. If I ever make it back to Orlando I would love to be welcomed to the sky, if available. I have a student on Monday and cannot wait to require: "I am commencing engine start." Thanks a bunch.
@@LewDixAviation Thank you for all you do. Just for smiles and giggles, you can put in ASR Larry Diamond Mzero on TH-cam and you will see me teach an ASR approach at KLAN (Lansing, MI).
It took me a lot of studying to find what you meant, but that really is a nice touch! Only problem is that when flying the high wing, the flare needs to be extended to represent the float
Man I need to get up there myself, I passed IFR in January after 3 push backs with Rob but i haven't done anything IFR or much flying since, had to pay down 10k in credit card debt before I would take anymore training. I actually enjoyed the single pilot stuff to hear your thoughts, good stuff!
Love flying Instrument flight rules! Just did a 5 hour trip yesterday helping a coworker get a family friend back home for the holiday. Flew all the way down to minimums and caught the lights just as we hit DA. So much fun.
Great flight! I’m in the midst of instrument training and find myself chasing the needle too much on glide path. I talk to myself too the entire way down! I know it’s a matter of practice and finding the right amount of input on keeping the GS. Getting better but sure is tough. I’m certainly enjoying the training! Thanks for the video!
If you're struggling with your instrument approaches, the most important thing to remember is that you need small corrections. If you have a Garmin 430 through 750 i prefer to have the Nav/Localizer page up with the fields of TRK(track) over DTK(desired track) on the screen. Keep your course corrections at 3° or less when on the approach. Rudders are better than the yoke for this type of correction. Most people over bank when they are coming in on the approach and they kind of swing down the whole approach. By keeping the wings level and using steady, smooth pressure on the rudders you can have much more stable approaches.
Even though you were current, and you did shoot an approach, I would have went missed even with a visual just to log that, and then re-enter another ILS for a second approach. Log as many as you can, and do all the procedures that are required to stay current. I just finished my IPC’ yesterday. Now I have to go and chase the weather. When you’re via far you always pray for a good day, when you’re IFR you always pray for 8 to 900 foot ceilings.
Exactly what I needed right about now, another lewdix video. I just flew commercial twice in the last week, but I can't really judge their instrument landing skills because it was clear VMC on both approaches. Would you ever consider doing a second lap around the hold just to increase proficiency (even though you don't need it for currency)?
Did you ever do a VDF approach? I had to for a VMC rating. I then went to the USA to build hours. A really cool instructor, Dave, suggested flying at night, whilst I did the few hours dual the FAA insisted upon, so I could learn something new. Asked if I fancied doing an ILS approach, of course I said yes. As we got lower Dave was saying how bang on I was, and ended up saying "keep the hood on, I will give you height information". I did a smooth landing, under the hood, and Dave claimed my nose wheel ran over the centre of the centre line!!! Happy memories.
Nice one bruvaaa lol. No Really very nice touch kept it really tight. I didn’t know you can request the hold. Can’t wait to do more app. Soon. I’m working on my A&P so I get a lot of maintenance flights. Sometimes real mic. I’ve always done it with a second pilot as I’m not there yet. It can get busy in a hurry. I like to stay well ahead of everything. Thanks for posting.
Nice work, great video! IMC forecast here for Friday, will be doing the same thing (but in a real plane...lol). Let us know if you have a fix for the slippy wing gopro? Same issue here, lots of ground footage does not make compelling YT content!
About holds: I got my instrument rating in 1985 and have flown all over the U.S. and some in Canada and Mexico. I’ve never been issued a hold and never had to go missed. Obviously, I stay current on both but never had to do either in “real life.”
Single Pilot IFR flights is great with a auto pilot rather than none but the more you have to demonstrate to the DPE on your Checkride including showing him or her how to set up the approach that you was asked to do in the GPS . The less you have as of avionics in the Airplane is even better and more rewarding
He went to take off his Flying Eyes when he had the runway in sight because that's when you usually take off the foggles. Not this time, actual IMC lol.
Nice job staying current with your IFR procedures. I fly in various parts of the world, never quite understood why only in the States instrument approaches all seem to get ‘shot’ ……!😉
Loved this flight. Actually really liked the camera facing down. Only thing which might be better is to somehow increase the lighting in the cockpit, it was really hard to see the instruments, but it might just be how dark the plane actually was.
Is there a reason for not bringing the student along as a passenger? Unless the student wasn't there and you had preflighted the plane in preparation for the lesson. Really enjoyed the video. Good content (as always) and the smooth background music set a good relaxing mood. Happy flying!
Excellent.....When do you know you are ready for your IFR check ride? I have the hours and my instructor is still working with me but I just feel that I am not quiet ready. Do you ever feel ready? how can you know? dumb question? I am an old dog (63) trying to learn a new trick. Often the training is exhausting....mentally and physically. I am not relaxed. II can fly the piss out of my 1957 Cessna 172 and my 1974 M20F Mooney VFR. IFR training only in the Mooney. Doc Mike
At glideslope intercept, the timer was not started. I wonder if this is done only by us guys currently training for the instrument rating but never in actual practice?
To have more effective braking. There’s differing opinions out there about when to retract the flaps. When I’m teaching PPL students, until they are doing short field landings they leave the flaps where they are until clear of the runway. I tend to retract earlier when I’m the one flying because I trust myself to do so without jeopardising anything.
Don't mind my saying this but having loose items in the cockpit (your cell phone and other things on the copilot seat) is risky, if they slip in between the rudders and get stuck you could be in serious trouble...
For some (sick?) reason i seem to enjoy watching IFR videos on TH-cam. A guy in a little cabin covered in puffy white cotton staring at steam gauges .... What's wrong with me? Sooo... thanks, i guess!? By the way: i miss the banjo featuring outro song! winky emoji. Did i just type this out loud?
When you said "we'll be looking, we're IMC", you are correct because you are referring to yourself and the airplane. Meanwhile I'm coming to the end of my IFR training and thinking about the upcoming checkride, so it's great to see SPIFR in actual IMC.
They're hiring...the airlines - you're well on your way. I would bet that the pilots at you 'tier level' can't do that because they lost it all because of autopilot.
