Sooo is that how they would give the directions for the hold. “Hold east on the 235 radial 32 dme.” Or will they say north east. Thanks for the great videos
"...cause we are fnk nerds..." had me laughing hard with the tone you said it......this was timely today as I was practicing giving myself random heading and hold #s this morning sitting at my desk then figuring how many seconds I could figure out entry......CFII hurdle this year...
What do you use to measure DME in the aircraft that you are currently flying in? It might seem like a dumb question but my avionics are currently being upgraded and my vintage Narco DME will be replaced, but I’m not sure where I will source that information from ie my GNC 355
I know you addressed it should have been NE, but shouldn't the radial also have been called out as 055 radial? Hold NE on the 055 radial? Aren't the cardinal directions and the radial supposed to match? Otherwise you're outbound on the 235 course (are instructions ever read out by ATC like this? 235 outbound?) - new instrument student
This is a common error that instrument students make. The radial is in relation to the station, not the direction you’re flying. For example you can be flying west but still be on the 090 radial - might seem confusion but if you think about where you are in relation to the station, it makes it easy. I’ve always found that tuning the VOR and twisting the OBS so you have a FROM indication, with a centred needle it’ll show you which radial you’re on.
The regulations only specify that you must have "performed and logged" "holding procedures and tasks" while "in actual weather conditions, or under simulated conditions using a view-limiting device". No requirement is listed that the hold must be published or assigned by ATC. Therefore, it would appear that this is a loggable holding procedure for IFR currency. Source: 14 CFR 61.57(c)(1)
I think normally you would have said hold Southwest on that first hold instead of saying hold east cuz you base the hold from the station. Other than that looks like you did a good job
This could not have come at a better time! Literally working towards my IRA written - test is scheduled for next week. There are tons of videos out there about holds, but a LewDix vid with Otto is the cherry on top. 🤌
Best comment ever by Otto…you KNOW where we are you are flying the hold 🤣
i loved the cockpit environment
Amazing content. Thanks!

It should have been “north east” but I knew what he meant 🙌🏻 Thank you man!

😂 Glad you got a laugh. Good luck on the double I!
When holding on the 235 radial wouldn’t it be southwest? Could you clarify for me because I’m super confused lol 😂
Did IFR ground school this past weekend. Inspiring me to get going :-)
Nice!
Love these videos. I'll have to go up and practice this in XP :)

My GPS is set up direct to the VOR which gives the distance. It’s not a dumb question at all.
@@LewDixAviation Thanks - I assumed that’s how it would work but just haven’t seen it in action
So... answer me this. Why is the standard hold to the right, but the standard traffic pattern to the left?
VOR baby! Let's goooooo!

How you guys record your voices during flight?
100 kts in a 172 in a hold???? hahahahaha My safety pilot would yell at me for that one.
When you’re paying for the rental, 100kts is minimum for a practice hold 😂
Can you log this unpublished, uninstructed hold as your one every 6 months?
Yes

You base the hold on the fix. If we held southwest of the fix it would completely change the procedure.
Thanks for clarifying
🐐
I didn’t know Tim the tatman was a pilot
He’s a better pilot than gamer, I can tell you that

Haha glad to be of help! Otto is always an added bonus!
