- Windy Hill Play is a nonprofit child care organization on a mission to create accessible, flexible and abundant spaces for children to play freely and grow in confidence! Within the episode I interview Mariah King and Princess Rahman - CEO and COO of Windy Hill Play.
Mariah King has over three years of experience in child-related industries, education, and public service. Additionally, she has a deep understanding of the needs and challenges faced by children and families in our community.
Princess Rahman has extensive experience in customer-facing positions and childcare. She is also passionate about increasing access for people of color, marginalized individuals, independent parents and those whose work hours do not fall within traditional 9-5 blocks.
Both Mariah and Princess model what it looks like to be a gentle and firm caregiver. They set clear boundaries and enforce them with empathy, patience and persistence.
It is their charge to build, provide and support infrastructures, solutions and services for such care models. Their goal is to build a diverse support network for primary, secondary and temporary care providers. Windy Hill Play believes that through this diverse network they can create a haven for all children in Durham County and grow in togetherness, love and wellness!
It is Mariah and Princess’s vision that every dependent and primary care provider in Durham, NC will have access to an affiliate care facility. These facilities will provide affordable, flexible services and solutions to all dependents, families and partnering organizations. It was such an honor to interview these incredible, fearless, community oriented Women. To them, “being the village” is more than a mission statement or admirable quote, it is their life’s work!

I just finished watching and I enjoyed this so much. They both seemed to be in-tuned and engaged with the children. I love the backyard and how much space these children have to engage in play based learning. Thank you for sharing Windy Hill Play with us. This was such a great conversation to bring attention to this issue of lack of access or flexibility in child care. It’s always been a concern of mine for families that don’t work traditional hours like myself. Daycares are never opened overnight or beyond “business hours” but essential workers are expected to show up. Childcare should be deemed as an essential service.
Mariah and Princess seem to complement each other so well. They seem like such beautiful souls.
I love the motto/ structure of the organization (parents and children are family first) having that connection is so meaningful and comforting to families especially when their child is in your care for hours.
