  • Rita and her family recently moved into a brand new house, but the tiles on the main floor quickly loosened and the grout started to lift. After other contractors tried and failed to fix the problem, Mike Holmes steps in and creates a new polished concrete floor.

    Retired tilesetter of 47 years here. Porcelain is just slightly porous glass. Thinset does not stick to porcelain very well. No matter what you do. I've seen porcelain tile that was cleaned and backbuttered still come loose with a full imprint of the tile in the thinset. This is a problem everywhere!!! ---------If you can feel movement in a wood floor then DO NOT put tile on it.

    I have come to the conclusion that the only way to guarantee a good, safe home is to win the "lotto" and hire Mike Holmes to build it for you....

      or at least hire mike holmes to do the inspection before purchase.

      You're right...If you want to build it new, have Mike contract it, he can have his own guys come in and he can sign off after he looks at their work or you buy a home and have him go through it like a maniac and nitpick every single thing which gives you a ton of options on how to negotiate a good deal...

    I guess in this day and age all they think about is money money money too....but whst happened to customers service and making things right now too,,I was taught old school carpentry and trades too and go above and beyond codes and make super strong to,and don't care about the costs too....that's proper customers service and making people happy and making things last forever too now too...

    Over wood, I would always go with a flexible covering. Tile on timber floor - even special purpose bathroom board - never seems to last.

    The reason the builders seemed "on her side" was they were just talking her out of doing anything. Trying to run out the clock so to speak till her contract/insurance ran out for a problem to be their fault. It's like going to the store and them offering to try and fix a problem instead of taking a return. They know your return period runs out in 14 days or so, if you waste time trying to "Fix" the problem through them you might void your ability to return something like a new Computer.

    That concrete “tile” floor is fascinating. Not crazy about the color palette, but other than that I would certainly consider using it in my house.

    I’m curious how the new floor holds up in high traffic areas. I’d be concerned that the product would wear off

  • @Danielceola
    @Danielceola 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I don't fully understand this repair. They have an issue with the tiles coming loose causing grout to crack and in some cases the tiles are coming up completely - so they're just covering over it? Doesn't really make sense to me.

    • @brianduffy1338
      @brianduffy1338 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They then went down below to bolster up the beams and flooring so that it would not shift and hence lead to cracks.

      Same thinking I have. If the tiles come loose, the now poured concrete-like floor will come loose. I'd say. Besides.... It's a LOT of work to create a faux tile. Not a fan.

    ive never seen engineered floor beams with additional plywood attached to them. does it make a difference? may as well use solid wood floor beams if going to that length?

    • @mattbarrett41
      @mattbarrett41 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Engineered beams are wooden I-beams. The center is OSB of varying width. The advantage is weight saving vs load. Technically they’re stronger than solid beams due to weight/load ratio. Major downside, ZERO horizontal strength. They will bend or wobble when installed. Sheeting them in plywood to the top and bottom of the “I” makes them much stronger. Also creates a proper surface for braces to be tied in.

    No tile installed is sealed . Bathrooms need no less than 2 seals. If you want it done, seal it yourself. Easy to do, This came from a contractor friend that has morals like Mike.

    TGI construction is low grade. These things burn out quickly in a fire and the house collapses. The fire Marshall usually points this out. Better to use laminated plywood beams. Mass Plywood beams. Much better and fire tested. 😊

    Don’t you have insurance when u buy a house in the states? Here in Sweden we have a insurance called hidden fault and the insurence company will help you with the problem.
    And also you have such a bad building standard on houses over there 😂

    • @alidapurdy
      @alidapurdy 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This wasn't the states. It's Canada. And filmed over 20 years ago. But unfortunately, even in the States, builders cut corners to build more quickly. We have homeowners insurance but home warranties and guarantees in new builds. Then have to fight the builder to make them fix their own mistakes.
