When the intake manifold is removed I strongly recommend to check if the oil cooler is leaking oil. Access to the oil cooler to replace the gasket and o-rings is much better with removed intake manifold.

very thorough step by step guide. I did the job over a week, but should've taken 2 days if not for waiting for glow plugs to come in as you have access while the manifold is off. Take time to clean the cylinder heads and spoon out the carbon buildup.

Since I have done this procedure twice once on an m47 and now on an m57 I can argue the point, swirl flap delete on its own might cause a loss in low end torque and economy but that’s by itself, but with stage 1 remap, egr deleted, and an intake manifold carbon clean it actually gives it more power, just make sure you fit the intake correctly and with all the seals otherwise you will get a boost leak and/or it could spit oil and heavy black smoke out the exhaust 😂

  • @khuliqq

George. I commented on your earlier video when you discovered your problem after having done the swirl flap delete and bung insert on mine.
Your absolutely right about loss in torque and economy. Having driven the car about now, it is quite noticeable.
Your efforts and videos are much appreciated. Thanks so much keep it up.
Don't tease us with your plans for the intake. Wish I'd have known before I did the delete so I could have followed your footsteps.

Has anyone noticed that the blanking plug does not actually touch the swirl flap mechanism housing. there is 3-4mm gap between the top of the blanking plug (with the cap fitted) and the plastic housing.
However, It does fit with the rubber swirl flap rod seal still in place. The seal with this video came out on the rod, which means the plug isn’t secured?

George is spot on here... on diesel engined BMW's upon acceleration until 2250RPM the swirl flaps remain closed and open proportionally as engine speed increases, which is the exact opposite what happens on petrol engined vehicles to our logical thinking brains.
The reason for this is to speed up the velocity of air into the engine, using shaped (swirled) ports and this is why removing them will significantly worsen performance and economy.

The flaps themselves go brittle and break or snap and drop into your cylinder. So you’re basically recommending that then. I beg to differ. But hey,..🤷🏻‍♂️. Each to their own I guess. 😉👍

Hi George. Thanks a lot for the helpful video. Does a removal of the swirl flaps affect the durability and functionality of the DPF on a N47 engine? My driving profile is approx. 70% highway (80-130 km/h) and approx. 30% city (mean speed approx. 30 km/h). I understand that one can manifest a loss in torque only at low rpm, say at lower speed. I have removed the swirl flaps already but did not touch the EGR. I realize an increase in fuel consumption (approx. 10-15%). Is there anything I should also do with the EGR? Thanks a lot. Kind regards, Edward

I've just done one of these recently on an 11 plate 118d, rail pressure too low in ISTA readings should be over 300 bar. Fitted second hand HPFP & LPFP (£140 for the two) but the entire fuel supply needed to be stripped for a thorough clean (or done in situ) as the pump breaking down will fill the high pressure and return lines, tank and low pressure pump with metal swarf.
The high pressure pump sprocket puller from a N47 timing kit can be used to lock the sprocket in place to allow you to change the pump without removing engine or gearbox (as many forums suggest needs to be done, they're wrong - there's plenty of room even on a e87)
Here's what I did in brief
      1) Removed high pressure lines, rail and sensors for cleaning
      2) Removed injectors stripped and cleaned with carb cleaner. Spray into the nozzle make sure you get a good spray pattern from all the holes. Doing this on kitchen towels really helped to get everything in order on the first couple, then it's easy. Use a decent 6 point hex socket or spanner on the nozzle, they are tight and easily damaged. Use new crush washers when refitting, cut seats if required.
      3) Dropped tank and cleaned with degreaser/soapy water & cloths
      4) Removed fuel supply & return lines and cleaned thoroughly
      5) After re-assembly prime/purge HPFP using the fuel bleeding service option in ISTA before trying to start the engine (also when changing fuel filter).
I also dropped some magnets in both sides of the tank and inside the LPFP by the return pipe for a little more assurance (BMW recommend to change everything).
      Good luck with your repair!

I had a hole in my intake manifold on E61 N47, bought another one from breakers and it did not have swirl flaps. After 2 weeks exhaust started giving black smoke on acceleration at high gears and loss of power is noticeable. So it is kinda worse without flaps. New aftermarket manifold can cost around £200 with flaps motor.

I was blaming missing swirl flaps, but apparently it was just that stupid crack at the sensors base, just like you showed in one of your videos. But I wasn't going to pay £300 for a new pipe due to such a small crack. Easily fixed in 15min with several turns of black rubber self-hardening adhesive sealing tape from halfords (£6.50) Got all power back immediately and no more smoke! Jeez...
