I winter sow EVERYTHING!! With toddlers and middle school boys it’s to difficult stay consistent for indoor plants! We start all of our flowers, vegetables, and herbs with winter sowing! Sunflowers are always the first and biggest sprouts for me!
We also use a drill for the holes in the bottom and a dremmil saw to cut the jugs!
One other thing if you have a ton of snails and slugs like we do here in zone 7 we put a coffee filter on the bottom of the jug and then add the soil!
Tag inside and out just in case your garden marker doesn’t hold up! Happy Sowing!

One of my favorites to winter sow is anise hyssop. It’s a perennial, mint family (but doesn’t spread by runners). It is a cut for foliage and filler, great pollinator plant, flowers first year from seed and is super reliable germinator. It reseeds somewhat in my garden, but not aggressively so.

First time here too ,( in 5b Atlantic Canada) . Finding jugs was my problem... we don't get our milk in jugs. What I did have tho was a collection of apple cider jugs... actually sturdier than milk jugs. Also rotisserie chicken containers and peach "baskets" are now a clear plastic with attached!!! Lids .... no taping needed and they already have holes in both the top and bottom. And I also put mine in milk crates to make it easier to haul out where I wanted them (we have 2,3,4 ft of snow in the yard)

I attempted to WS for the first time last winter. I had 55 jugs and used 70 different seeds ranging from Amaranth to Zinnias. Only 4 varieties didn't make it (I can only recall Cosmos as being one of the four failures). My favorite seed to WS is Sweet peas. I usually start them indoors but won't bother doing that anymore since they do so well in the jugs. Last year was a learning year hence the 55 jugs. This year I'm only growing what I truly want in my garden so am only using 12 jugs. I live in zone 5b Colorado

Some favorites last year were foxglove, poppies, larkspur snapdragons, hollyhock, orlaya, love in a mist, lavender, verbena, lupine, alyssum, and coneflower. I have 50 jugs so far, many of same again, also milkweed, Penstemon, delphinium, sweet peasome grasses, etc....so many. I am going to do warmer things, and veg mid march.

Other things I had success with are foxglove, callendula, nasturtium, parsley, hollyhock, bok choy, lettuce & spinach.
For late winter/early spring sowing I had great success with tomato, peppers, eggplant, zinnias, sunflowers, celosia & beans.

Perennials that will self sow in nature areba good bet for winter sowing. I winter sowed for the 1st time last year. Lupine, Lobelia: Crystal Palace, Verbena Bonasaris, Scabiosa, Echinacea & Alyssum did well. I had some fails with old seeds. I did over plant too.

I have winter sown my baby's breath and rudbeckia from the grow along with you. I sow baby's breath every year this way and it has always been my best performer in winter sowing. Bravo! Welcome to the club! Brussels and broccoli are terrific for winter sowing too!

Yay!! So glad you're trying winter sowing! It feels like magic when you get seedlings from the bottles - especially when the inside seedlings require so much effort. My winter sowing list grows longer every year. It is over 250 varieties this year.

Here in Ireland I’ve had great success with winter sowing. Last year I had lovely sweet peas, poppies, verbena, yarrow and grasses. I think it’s great for anyone with a small to medium garden who doesn’t want too many plants of the same variety. It’s like opening a present when they’re ready. Good luck☘️

You can use a seed starting tray, with or without module, either place seeds in module holes, or broadcast seed across growing medium, then cover with clear dome. You need holes in bottom of seed tray and in humidity dome. Tie up with string. Freda

Hello😊 Last year I had winter sowing success with Delphinium, Daisies, and Yarrow. Foxglove was my failure. This year I'm adding vermiculite to every container. I've already started this year with Joe Pye Weed, Irises, Nigella, and Red Hot Poker. I've often wondered what my neighbors think in spring when I come home from work and can be seen peering into the milk jugs kept on my back deck. Lol Good Luck!

Yay! I knew you would catch the bug! Welcome to the winter sow club! 😁 I sow waaaay too many to list (50 so far), but if I had to choose I would say Artichokes have been one of my favorites! I will pop a pic of my list on the Facebook group if that’s okay? I use milk jugs, but I use ANY clear container I can find. I have used some of my older seed trays that I don’t mind adding holes to. They will just be forever deemed winter sow trays. I’m like you and sow sooo many seeds that the jugs just don’t fully cut it. I’m okay with sacrificing a few of my trays! It squashes my gardening funk I go through in the winter. Can’t wait to see your reveal video! 💚❄️🌺☀️

Hi Nicole. Love your videos! This is my second year winter sowing! I am actually trying to sprout a Redbud Tree! I collected seeds from a beautiful tree on our property and hoping for the best! Also, just a tip. The first year I wrote the variety on the bottle. This year I have 40 jugs and I am just writing a number on my jugs and then making a list that has the corresponding seed for each number. That way it is very easy to use from year to year! Good luck!
