❄️ Trying a New Method for Winter Sowing Cool Flowers & Perennials in 2023 (Season 2 Episode 2)

  • Hi everyone! It's January, which means it's time for me to start some winter successions of hardy annuals and perennials, including: snapdragons, strawflower, feverfew, scabiosa, bee balm, eucalyptus, rudbeckia, mountain mint, verbena, and lisianthus.
    I have found that sowing these seeds earlier (in January rather than in February) makes the plants more robust and productive during the growing season. I have limited space under my grow lights, so I'm trying the milk jug/container planting method for some of the flowers that will be able to survive in the elements. Hopefully they germinate and grow up nicely! I'm going to leave them outside and wait to see what happens.
    Thanks for watching!

    I store my 300+ dahlia tubers in my seed room as well. For that reason I don't start seeds in Jan. but start them Feb. 1st. I start my tubers at the same time, this means my dahlias are tall enough come May 1st to plant the 6" deep outside and still see green above the soil surface, that gives me earlier blooms. The cool weather flowers I start Feb. 1st go outside shortly after sprouting, I plant them and cover them with bottomless milk jugs or sheet of plastic held off the ground. This way they have sprouted, the roots get to start healthy growth, and as soon as it is warm enough for them to start taking off they do. The bottomless milk jugs do the same as the water containers you start in with the exception of letting me get them in the ground right away - once sprouted. For example, my sweet peas get started in the seed room Feb. 1st, but are planted out Feb. 23rd-ish under their milk jug domes.

      You will get there! I remember you had commented about the green house back in spring when I was just getting started. Thanks for following along on this journey 😊

    Thanks for clearly labeling the date and growing zone. I often find useful videos on TH-cam, but without that crucial information, it is difficult to adapt the information to my zone and the current date.

      I agree, the date and zone is essential to know! 😊

    Massive congrats on 100k!! 🎉
    About to start my first year as a flower farmer and would love to hear a Q&A!
    What’s your favorite flower?
    Would love more info on the business side of things and how you’ve found it starting a flower business, what was easy or went well vs what was hard etc and top tips for new farmers 😊
    Also wondering how you came up with your farm name and how you made your cool logo?
    And finally… where did you get your merch made, (I love your hat!)?
    Thanks and looking forward to more videos in 2023! 😝

    Congratulations on 1000 subscribers! Winter sowing is fun I had good luck with feverfew and bachelor buttons last year. I am going to try snapdragons as well this year.

    So glad to find a WA flower farm channel! I’m in 8b wa. Wondering why you didn’t use the green house for winter sowing instead of the water jug.

    • @DewBloomFlowerFarm
      @DewBloomFlowerFarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and welcome! My plan was to use both the jugs and the greenhouse to maximize my seed starting space, although the weather didn't cooperate and I didn't sow as many successions as I had hoped for.

    Congratulations on the milestones! I would love to know where you were able to find eucalyptus seeds. I had a very hard time finding them this year. I hope your winter sown seeds do better than mine did last year. Only a few types did well for me. I am just up the coast from you in Western Washington near the Canadian border. I’ll be excited to see if you have better success than I did. Might’ve been a fluke for me.😂 thank you so much for sharing and I hope you get enough questions for doing a Q&A. Also, praying for a much better spring in our growing season than we had last year!😆

      I know you can get Eucalyptus seeds at West Coast Seeds, which is a BC, Canada seed co. Since you are a PNW location, that might be worth a try, even though its across the border. They carry seeds that do well on the PNW.

      Thank you! I got my eucalyptus seeds from The Gardener's Workshop: thegardenersworkshop.com/product/eucalyptus-silver-dollar/
      Looks like they are currently out of stock but I see Johnny's has some in stock!
      I am already noticing it is very wet for this winter sowing method here, fingers crossed these flowers make it! If this spring is anything like last spring I'm going to need a long vacation to decompress lol

    👋 fellow flower grower here, I would not start those lisianthus outside using winter sowing methods. They are from the south states of America Arizona, Mexico etc and are originally a riverside plant. They like to be nice and warm consistently and humid or else they won’t sprout at all. Lisianthus also has a long growing season so if you want blooms you need them going quickly asap and then they need to be planted out before it gets too hot otherwise they will rosette. You’re not going to get the conditions where you live to sprout them outside (maybe if you lived in Texas etc) but this will just be a waste of that seed. If you’ve got heat mats bring them indoors and set them up under lights! If you want more info on growing lisianthus farmer Bailey has just done a terrific video on this and another TH-cam flower farmer (regenerative flower farming) has a very detailed video on how she grows her lisianthus but they won’t do anything from the winter sowing method even though they are a hardy annual they need a really warm start. Loved the video btw 🥰 the rest looked great

      Hello and thanks for the information! I was just trying it as an experiment but it sounds like I don't have to waste my time (or seeds) with that since others have already tried it! I've already given up on lisianthus this year, too high maintenance for my taste! 😊

      Oh interesting, I might have to give that method a try if winter jug sowing doesn't work out! ☺

    Greetings from Pagosa Springs Colorado. I'm in zone 5 and our last frost date is around June 10th. What is your recommendation for winter sowing? Should I wait till the end of February or should I start now. Love your video! I hope you can guide me to success! Thanks

    • @DewBloomFlowerFarm
      @DewBloomFlowerFarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! I'm zone 8 so I'm very mild. However, I found this winter sowing guide from Empress of Dirt (love her blog). Here's the link: empressofdirt.net/winter-sowing/
      She gardens in zone 6, which is more similar to your climate and recommends winter sowing plants that need cold stratification about 5-6 months before your last frost date.
      I hope that helps! 😊

    You can save the seed from Triloba. That's what I do.
