A fine Tartan

  • Just checking in so that you won't think I fell of the edge of the earth. I really have been doing a bit of weaving this summer, and here is a short clip of me working on some Tartan Tea Towels, to prove that I am still vertical and semi-coherent.

    Andy, I'm very impressed! I love the color combination of your tea towels!! Brilliant!

      thanks John, but I did not choose the colors. For that you must thank a US Marine, who designed this cloth and registered it with the Scottish government ( www.tartanregister.gov.uk ). But I am enjoying very much seeing the cloth build as I weave - at 36 threads per inch this is a slow but somehow satisfying project for me.

    Andy, that is beautiful! I'm so captivated by your ability to perservere at your weaving which seems so tedious to me. Yet it's got to be done to create that work of art. But I thought to myself, well what do I do that might seem tedious to others. As a gardener I weed. I love weeding. Honestly, I love to get down and pull the weeds from among the plants I want to keep. It's kind of like weaving. I need to move in and out between the plants to keep the right balance between what I want and don't want. I guess that's a stretch, but I know that I can make a great garden with tedious, joyful work. Just like you make beautiful weavings the same way. I would say that your results exceed mine in many ways! The tartan is beautiful and since I don't know one tartan from another, your secret is safe with me!

      Ya see Terry, I do NOT have a green thumb! Sure I can grow weeds in the cracks of the concrete of my driveway, but forget about vegies or flowers, and now way on God's green earth that I am gonna go out and pull, if I even recognized, a weed. So ya see, we are all God's children and we each have our talents. Mine is this strange ability to manage threads and make them come out as cloth, while yours is to grow the beautiful and/or delicious plats that we see or eat. Neither is better or worse - we are just different. I admire your ability with plants as much as you are fascinated with what I make. So using very old fashioned logic you can grow the food, and I will supply is with cloth for the clothes we wear. What a wonderful way to take care of the world we live in.

    I love tartans but I don't know how to find the exact color counts for weaving them. Is there a place on the web for this? I really enjoy your vids as I always learn something new from you.

    Lookin' good there young man. I see you have taken up walking while you weave. I find my balance is better using that method. Like your 2 camera idea. I am now using a Leclerc 45" 4 harness Jack type which I acquired at end of July. Love it.

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walking is great exercise! I love taking a long walk along the river on the trail that used to be the CMStP&P right of way before they abandoned it 30 years ago.
      Question about your Leclerc, do you have a hard time with a full width on it. I have a 42 inch Louet Spring, but find that I don't like reaching to throw the shuttle more than about 39 or 40 inches wide at most.
      And yes I do prefer a walking-treadling, it's just much easier on me. Use left foot when throwing with right hand and versa-visa.

      I believe you and I are about the same build and find it a stretch for me past 38". I have not tried a full width yet. I usually work with 36" and am getting ready to double width with tabby as I have a 4 shaft therefore cannot do double width with twill. If I start with full width I think I will get or build a flying shuttle set up. Right now am using a side feed shallow boat but have ordered an end feed shuttle boat to see if there is a difference with the salvage.
      I notice when you use 2 shuttles that you keep the yarn without ending it when you start another colour. What do you do with the "extra" thread when you finish? Do you cut it and thread through or just cut it off?

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only use multiple colors and shuttles when I am doing a short bit of color two in between a chunk of color one. So I have a long stretch of green, but then I need 4 shots of red. I leave the green there and just weave in the bit of red, and after the four pics of red, I cut off the red and continue with the green. I find this better than cutting of the green for just the four pics of red and then having to re-start with the green. (does this make any sense at all, I may not have the words to easily explain this one).

      Understand actually, saves having to restart giving too many restarts like you do by feeding in from inside instead of having ends dangling and having to figure out how to lock the ends giving, to me, cleaner salvage.

    I learned something new, selvage control without using a floating selvage--they look great.

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, one can do that - even though I often use a temple, this time I am not, and the selvages look really good. I am doing my happy dance.

    Do you know the weight of the yarn you are using? I'm wanting to spin the wool yarn for my daughter to weave our tartan

    Is this the 16/2 cottolin?

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. At 36 EPI. Takes for ever to weave, but is making very nice towels.

    • @AlagaiBanty
      @AlagaiBanty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah, you said that about half way through ...
      So, the planned project being a tartan like this, is why you took so much care to get the right epi for a balanced weave, like you showed us toobers in your last weaving video.
      Fantastic! I love your work and your videos.

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes - that is exactly why I was so interested in figuring out the correct number of EPI to get balanced weave out of 36 EPI - I knew I wanted to do this one and have it right, so I did the previous video and bit of sample weaving as my test project. And so far I am glad to see that this one is pretty well balanced, not to mention that I am quite happy with the selveges too.
      Glad to hear that you are enjoying my videos.
