What an awesome and beautiful saw! I am 15 and am currently in the process of getting an old 051 AV Electronic running. Mine has a 36" bar.

I started our 056 Magnum today after setting for 2 years.
    Started right up, no surprise.
I love the "voice" of the saw when it's running. It has its own, very different sound.
Also dig the bass tone that emanates when it is idling while setting on the ground.
    Really cool!
I run a 30" bar and wouldn't trade the saw for anything!
    Thanks for the video!

Those old saws brings back alot of memories with my grandfather telling stories about his journey with the saw telling me the 051 was the 064 & the 056 was the 066 in its time.

I have an 056 mag 2.... everyone complains about ignition issues, but I haven't had one in the 40 years that I have owned it.... had a friend of my dad's back in the day borrow it... cleared over 50 trees 28" diameter plus with it and never cleaned it at all... got it back with the air filter completely full (like a molding) of saw dust.... (I never let anyone else touch this saw since and probably never will again) I cleaned it expecting the worst... it started up and ran fine... did a full clean and piston ring and cylinder check with a little smoothing... has been running like new ever since... I would advise a small exhaust port job and maybe a small intake as well and this saw can be even more of a monster. Only small drawback is that this is about the largest saw Stihl made back then without a decompression valve built in, (along with that, it has no manual/assist bar oiler, just an adjustable auto-oiler)... that being said, for its size, it's pretty easy to start. Btw... it will outrun a brand new 660 all day any day...

Currently rebuilding a 056 Mag II i got off FB marketplace for $50 and it had a full wrap on it along with a spare 54mm cylinder and a slightly ported 56mm. was never ran after the work was done on the cylinder. Ive replaced all the rubber lines, and should be running this weekend for the first time since the PO marked that he ported it in 8/2002.

Those 056 mag2s sound much more violent in person, at least mine does. Cant go wrong with pairing up an 026, 041, and a 056 mag2.

Does the Stihl 056 Magnum II have a decompression valve? Although I understand a lot of owners don't like them and are concerned about them dislodging and rattling in the cylinder, I'm not sure I could start that one without some assistance. I like your drop starting technique by having the bar resting on the log. You made it look easy.

    • @samishsawworks5870

No decomp on these saws. I've been intimate with this saw over the years, so I know right where the "sweet spot" is ;) haha I've had my share of starter handles ripped out of my hand on other healthy big bore saws. The extra inertia of "drop starting" it this way seems to help on saws that have a long enough bar.

I know the day will come when I can't start 'em anymore, so I figure I better get it in while I can ;)

@@samishsawworks5870 That exact thing happened to a good friend of mine... He loves working the wood, and always has. But he's 70 now and just can't start a couple of them anymore. I do all the work on his saws for him, and he's got quite the collection... So he was nice enough to give me his 056 Super with a brand new 34" bar, and brand new chain as well. I've always loved that saw, and he said he figured I earned it since I've kept all his saws going all these years. He's a darned good guy.
Hopefully I can get a few more years out of it before I, myself, can no longer start it. Absolutely love it. It eats wood like a fat kid eatin' ice cream, and runs flawlessly.
Thanks for the video. Simple, to the point, no nonsense or noise like so many others. Think I'll hang around. Well done, sir.

i seen that there isnt much in the way of magnum 2 specs so i did a bore n stroke measurement n did the math on the cc's it came out to 98.1 cc.. the 056 av super came out to 94 cc..

I have an 056 Magnum that I bought used back in the mid 90's. It came with a 16" bar on it, which I thought was a joke considering how big the motor is. I immediately bought a new 24" bar for it and that has been on the saw ever since. It still runs but could probably use an overhaul. The only work that's ever been done on it, is tune-ups and the carb rebuilt once.
I used to log in WI when I was a lot younger and also cut a lot of firewood. We were cutting mostly oak. Sometimes we cut walnut, maple, pine, cedar and Box Elder depending on what was available and what we needed.
Why do you pull the starter cord out a ways when you shut it off? I've never seen anyone do that before and I never have. Is that something specific to that saw or all saws?

    • @johnsmith7676
      @johnsmith7676 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

The starter rope trick helps on all saws. They tend to pull the rope back sharply a bit when shut down, which is hard on the rope and pull handle. Pulling the rope out a bit provides some slack in the rope to prevent that. Makes these parts last longer.

Do you have the access or means to braze or weld on the muffler? If not, no biggie. Would you prefer to keep it stock looking or does that not matter to you? There are a few different ways a person can go about it.

@@samishsawworks5870 hi I have a stick welder but because I would like to use the stock muffler the metal would be to thin to weld and also my saw will just be used for firewood and things like that so I don’t think I want to turn it up to high but just get some better performance without risking to blow my saw up
