Suga wrote, produced and came up with the whole idea for this video. He even spent a couple of days with a sword dance instructor to do his part properly. This song has a lot of historical and cultural Korean references, so the set is very Korean. You would have to watch a separate explanation video to catch all that he is saying. Daewchita is type of military music played before the king. So, he is literally saying: "Play this music before me, the king". 🔥🔥🔥💜💜💜 P.S. you are spot on about killing his older, angry and greedy self. If you look at the first mixtape MVs: August D and Give it To Me, Suga in them is blond. The crazy blond kind is not accidental here.

Education Light coming up: BTS are super-proud of their heritage and culture, so from now on, it's 99.99% safe to just assume that everything you see that your mind reads as East Asian is KOREAN.
Korean swords, Korean buildings, Korean foods, Korean clothes, Korean instruments, Korean dances, etc, etc.
Eventually, you'll find yourself wondering how the heck you picked up a bunch of Korean vocabulary like "hanbok", but that's just a freebie that BTS and ARMY supply you with on your way through their discography!
    P.S. You're awesome for asking!

One of the few reactors that actually get the deeper meaning behind this song instead of just thinking it's a flex. He's acknowledging that he's famous but he needs a reality check to stay grounded and humble. You are spot on! This storyline should continue in his album that will be released soon, he did say that he hasn't decided if the king actually died.

5:46 daechwita is historical military music, often played marching when going to war or to honor the king, one of the roles suga is playing here is the mad king, he even sampled it in this song

One of my favorite facts about this mv is that Yoongi had to take shots of whiskey in the washroom before going out to act as Mad King Agust 😂 also that Jhope rolled up to set with a coffee truck with Yoongi's face plastered all over it.

    1. All the elements from the MV is from the Korean traditional culture.
    2. "Rice chest" has cultural meaning in the historical contexts. My short English cannot explain it fully, however, one King(Yeong-jo) from the Joseon dynasty made his son(prince) put in the empty, locked-up rice chest without food and let him die inside the rice chest.
    3. Yes, you cannot expect them only one genres, as a solo and as a team. Their genres are soooo versatile. If you check their "On(Kinetic manifesto film)" "Mic drop" and "Black swan", you cannot imagine they are the same team : ) They are not just enjoying their fame, they still work sooo hard from the beginning when all the 7 members had to share only one small bedroom. Can't wait your reaction for Taylor's guide!!!
Thank you for giving chance to BTS and your thoughtful analysis! They are nothing but positive and inspiring energy. I don't understand why there are still so many haters who, even, have never listend their music carefully at once.

I loved your reaction. I love your thoughtfulness when it comes to asking questions about what you don’t know. As a teacher, it’s refreshing to hear. I’m sure someone already commented that you MUST watch the explanation video for this MV/song by DKDKTV. As a foreigner, it’s impossible to know all of the historical references (like the rice chest) in this video. But not knowing takes away the coolness of the song itself. You are dead on when it comes to the king at the end. One thing that even DKDKTV doesn’t mention is that the gun is a Colt Army - another shout out to the fandom. I know so much about Korea now bc of BTS’ MVs and lyrics. I’m so glad that I found them.

4:24 these are korean historical buildings, not original but built to look like they are, a popular tourist location, also often used for tv show sets or music video sets like in suga's case

  • @Bonusdoc
    @Bonusdoc ปีที่แล้ว +19

Yes the buildings, clothing, style, and aesthetics are traditional Korean. There is a lot of thematic overlap with Chinese and Japanese elements, just like how classical architecture looks similar all over in Europe, at first glance.
“Daechwita” is a type of marching band folk music that is played to announce the King’s arrival. You can hear it played in the background of the track; Suga /Agust D sampled a live performance from the Korean Traditional Performance Arts Org.

  • @Txxx99
    @Txxx99 ปีที่แล้ว +45

Daechwita is traditional Korean military music often played for the entrance of the king to make his presence known.
Daechwita was filmed at Dae Jang Geum Park- a historically-themed location built to showcase how South Korea used to live in the past. There are many similar looking historical Korean structures.

Yeah! Finally. I see some comments mentioning it, but the part with the cadence change is not a flex, but a realization that he wants just what he earns but staying on the ground (similar to RMs Wildflower... he's rooted, he has both feet on the ground).
Back... 5-6 years ago, they had a get together and had to write poems for the group. Suga wrote something in the line "thank god we fly together, if not this would be even scarier". He has had social anxiety, a couple of concerts had to be canceled bc he couldn't go on stage (same for RM with 1 concert) way back. They want to share their passion for music. Sure they want to earn money from that. They never expected what they got. (again the reference in Wildflower is clear: I saw the end, I even expected it)
He revisits this in his solo track Shadow (as BTS) (the MV is not the full track)

Okay, so I'm not a korean myself but this building and the whole set he's filming at is korean (not going to comment further, as I'm not a specialist on that matter). Suga (Agust D here lol) dressed like a king (a korean king) in this video. Daechwita - is a special type of music, people played it out loud to announce that the king is coming (you can learn more with Google on that)
Also Bang PD (aka hitman bang) is a man who created the label (bighit ent., later bighit music under hybe) more than ten years ago, where BTS come from. BTS literally is the main reason why this company is doing so well now. They often speak about their gratitude towards Bang PD, because he was the one who made them a group, who believed in them since the beginning. Now they treat this man as a big bro 😅
Yeah, he WAS having fun doing this, even learned how to swing sword to film this MV lmao
(Sorry english is not my first lang, so there's only the basics)))

Daechwita is kind of like military marching music in South Korea. It means "great blowing and hitting" (referencing the types of instruments used to play it) and was also used to announce the approach of the King.
I believe you were spot on with your interpretation of why the peasant Agust D shoots the King Agust D.

We definitely appreciate how you put thought into the music and videos, not many spend time to analyze the messages! Suga is full of heart and passion and it shows through in his projects, he fiercely loves music. I think the song really shows that off. Another fun fact is that he’s actually rumored to be descended from a royal clan (his last name being Min), I’m not sure if that is confirmed 100% though.

I’m not seeing anyone mention in the comments that the space Yoongi filmed is Yongin Daejanggeum Park near Seoul.
It’s actually a permanent filming set for K-period dramas, so yes based on real Korean architecture but not historic buildings.
I guess it’s sort of used as a theme park tourist spot too not sure. Wiki lists a ton of tv series and mvs filmed there.

13:35 honestly you are pretty correct, the main theory is that the mad king version of suga is the older (and in age younger), greedier version of suga, the one from his first mixtape agust d and the peasant version of suga is he himself now, or at the time in 2020

  • @happystansot7892

This is performed at a palace in Korea. They are very very proud of their culture. There is a video that explains this. Digita (how it sounds to me) was the music played in historical days when the King was arriving, that’s the basics I’m sure someone here will correct me if I am wrong. They would not highlight Chinese or other Asian culture but always their own. Korean culture is their love. They are actually “ambassadors” of Korean culture.

Your trading time for labour talk reminds me of when Suga said (paraphrased) something along the lines of young ppl have the right to be angry when the return of labor are diminishing nowadays
The irony of writing this comment with nagging Sunday night anxiety
I think very few artist’s journey (with their level of phenom) has been as well documented as BTS’s, I think you’ll really enjoy seeing their growth and evolution. It’s fascinating to watch their ideas and philosophies evolve and reflect also in their music.

Yongin Daejanggeum Park is the largest historical drama set in Korea, filled with a plethora of historically inspired facilities from the Three Kingdoms, Goryeo, and Joseon periods (Korean History). It is also the place where Suga (August D) shot the music video for Daechwita. Suga aka Agust D is also wearing a traditional Korean Hanbok in the video, and he learned the sword dance, and picked out a sword from the Joseon Dynasty and it was made for him. He even used an original Daechwita sample for his music, so he fused original Daechwita music with modern beats to make this song.
Daechwita is a genre of Korean traditional music consisting of military music played by wind and percussion instruments, generally performed while marching or as a static performance. It was commonly played when the King was arriving, or when ARMY was marching. Suga intended to imply ARMY marching with him as the true King in the Music Video.
Suga said that his 2020 self shot his 2016 self, and he uses his mixtapes like a journal, and he is changed now. You could check out his shooting sketch, he does talk about it, if you want. I personally don't like the DKDKTV Explanation, I think many of the theories are wrong, and I personally think it's better to listen to the artist first before an explanation. Anyway, the only reason I brought it up is that people always recommend that explanation. You actually got the concept. Good song review. Thanks

Korea is physically positioned in between Japan and China; if you check out the map you’ll see it’s like a large peninsula that juts out from the mainland towards Japan and as such is like a “bridge” to mainland China. This has caused the Korean Peninsula to be the unfortunate middleman in wars between the two big regional powers; for example the country is literally split in half, with NK associated with communist China and SK aligned with western capitalism. So no surprise their architecture and historical iconography is reminiscent of the Asian visual tropes we see here in the USA.

4:21 Its understandable and yes there are architectural buildings like that in both North and South Korea (the structural aspects can be very similar to china and japan but they’re very different) … That is a real place he filmed at which I don’t remember the name but if im not mistaken from I what know, It is probably one of the oldest active villages and palace on the outskirts of South Korea.

  • @lelmdrWHO
    @lelmdrWHO ปีที่แล้ว +2

yup, the building in the back is a Korean style palace. The roof is shaped a bit differently and they are decorated very differently. The main way I can tell Korean architecture apart is you will often see these small gargoyle-like statues along the corner spines of the buildings.
There are a ton of really specific cultural references in this song. If you want to learn more check out DKDK TV's series "Explained by a Korean." They're youtubers who do a lot of things, but that series break downs Korean cultural references in Kpop lyrics and videos

  • @BetterGreta13
    @BetterGreta13 ปีที่แล้ว +6

There are many elements of Korean architecture and culture that resembles those of Japan. The two countries share many cultural aspects and are much more closely aligned biologically than Korea and China. But architecturally-speaking, if you visited other Asian countries like Cambodia or Viet Nam or Thailand, you would also find pagoda style buildings.

Time stamp and cultural notes time!
Also some private information of our Blond Emperor here !
[1:16] Emperor (that owns my heart) starts the MV on a exact copy of his real life grandgrand-(some 4-5 grands there) -grandmother's throne. That is situated in an exact copy of an real royal palace (one of the royal palaces) of The Last Empress ( Min YoonGi's grand...grandmother {that is his real name, last name first, given names second}). (No Min Yoongi would not be near the throne if South Korea for some reason decided to revert back to monarchy, the clan to go to the throne would be Lee.)
(BTS of course have performed at the REAL original palace that this is a copy of, also.. An honor not often granted.)
Where this was filmed is an huge place where they film most of Korean dramas either movies or TV-series.
So real life Agust D/ Suga is a born royal by his blood - levels of both irony and sarcasm in this MV are off the charts! 💜
[2:55] you stopping t the important pint where another young royal blooded from BTS gets hit by by their Main Vocal 💜
Eldest in BTS is from older royal clan than Agust D. And when they joined in BTS the eldest Jin and second youngest Tae (stagename "V") found out they were part of the same Kim clan - these clans are HUGE ( Suga's clan: "The 2015 Korean Census counted 167,124 members of the Yeoheung Min clan.") - so it is not wonder they did not know each other at all. The Kim clan that Jin and Tae belong to, is totally different Kim clan that RM belongs to.
[3:22] Cultural note it is incredibly insulting to step on your dirty shoes on your royal official, even if you are the mad despot - that is the blonde ones role here - as the opposite of the black haired (time travelling?) poor (rapper).
[4:99] Architecture - China was a huge cultural influence of all of it's neighbors for hundreds of years : it influenced also their architecture. This MV mainly seems to be telling a story about (late?) Joseon era (1392-1897). Like Suga's last name - that we already have talked : Min-clan started from a Chinese diplomat that was staying in Korea - before him there was no Min as a last name in Korea. It still is the only one. All Korean Min's are from this one clan. - Unlike we already learned there is several Kim clans even among BTS's 7 members.
[5:37] Everybody and their cutest white dog named Rapmon - are telling you about the music style that Daeswita is, in short it is a march music when the king in out and about, like out in a parade for his honor, or For Example going out for Warpath.. ;D (You could find it in your own, and listen little bit of the real original thing, to understand what Agust D did to it.)
(also you should see the videos, about filming this MV and the other where he himself tells what the D-2 songa are about and how it came to be - note the times when he tells he worked in the album - that is on top of his normal BTS work day, after all of the other people are sleeping..
[5:55] Time travelling (?) also this car ties the video possibly to That That (Prod SUGA) by PSY. 💜
Also the car is apparently the "tommygun" equivalent of 80's-90's South Korean mafiosos - Everybody and their Holly (correct way to write Suga's male dog's name is Holy, but we go with the pronounciation 💜) knows in South Korea what that car symbolizes.
[9:36] The scroll and lyrics about Bang-PD : The picture in the scoll is their original company Big Hit's (HYBE is still his company And Big Hit is one branch of it) CEO, then man they all concider their older brother, and their important family. The caricature was drawn their youngest - in a kinda game on Pictionary - and everyone instantly know who it was supposed to be! :D 💜
(One of Suga's oldest dreams is to be called "Min-PD" - PD as a short for producer. - You already know, watching the documents that he wanted to be hired as a producer for Big Hit originally.) 💜
The Ending and thoughts on it..
I think you are quite close to the truth with your thoughts on it. 💜
Well, he practically ran away from home at 16 (possibly his father - notoriously strict man - even disinherited him(?) - you know he has a royal blood to carry, he has to be a proper young man, rapping, dreaming of TATTOOS! and if worst came to be true : not (originally looking like he was no going to) finishing his school..!) (this act of disinheritance is not small thing in Asian cultures - AND here (!) it actually might mean his name was stricken from the clan book (!).
( Today and now for years already Suga's real family relations are very good and all of his BTS-brothers seem to love his father.💜)
There is a line in his D-1 mixtape that I think is about this Ending also : “Min Yoongi is dead already (I killed him)” I _personally_ think this line is NOT about self harm, i think it is about different sides of him. He left his royal blooded self, who was going to work in the office, and have at least one obligated son or hopefully two "heir and spare".. (BTW Min Yoongi in real life has an older brother and no other siblings.) And he became Gloss the underground rapper -> who later grew into Suga and Agust D. (You can still find some of RM's and Suga's OLD underground songs in the net, if you want to see their full growth ;D)
Also the lyrics about born in a ditch but climbing to the top would suggest.
Personally I think this song is about "you effers I was born with a literal royal blood - but I'm the Emperor (king of kings) of rap scene Because of hard work that I have literally bled for every darn step of the way, and if I was not done the work, I would been just a hollow fake - like Some ARE, who still dare claim themselves to be the kings and princes of the rap." 💜
But there IS another song about him worrying about his inner monsters, mainly the greed - which the king also could symbolize.. But he already made the song about it, no need to do it several times..

You can think of DaeChita as Fanfare with drums. It literally means that. Written in Chinese, Dae means, Big ,Large.. great... Chi, is the for instruments that you blow into... wind instrument, brass, horn... etc. and Ta is for hitting. For example, in Korea, baseball player that is batting is called Taja. Taja is also, oddly enough... now that i'm thinking about it, is what a typist is call (however if you write in Chinese, "ja" is different, so it is homograph (it gives different meaning). I said all this so I can say the influence of Chinese in Korea and Japan are extensive. The noble used Chinese as the Written language in Korea until the King Sejong. Even today, when there's Homograph used in writing, they will specify the meaning using the Chinese. I read someone's comment about Suga's family name 'Min" and how everyone with that last name in Korea are related and due to the they are all come from same lineage. And the palace shown was one of his greatx5 grandmothers. I wanted to also mention that King Sejong... yes the King Sejong, one that created Korean( Hangul) King Sejon's Mother is Min lineage (Wong Gyenog Wang Hu - 원경왕후 민씨) Queen Wongyeong.

Love this song and MV. So many cultural references in the cinematography but also the lyrics. The pistol at the end is an ARMY model 😎 They think of every little detail. There are several 'behind the scenes' type of videos. 1 with him learning the sword dance, 1 with an interview where he basically talks about the song and MV, 1 with the making of it where 2 of the members dressed in period wardrobe to be in the market scene and j-hope showed up with a coffee truck. There are a few different explained videos to that talk about the history (I think I'll go look to see if you have reacted to any of them but maybe you haven't yet - that's ok tho' i know there is so much content LOL). This place is historical reconstruction of Korean buildings, used as tourist park and for shooting historical movies. This MV was filmed during the pandemic, so it seems like Yoongi saw the opportunity while it's not as booked as always. He said that cost of this MV was surprisingly not that high as it could be, so maybe prices for booking this place was lower because of pandemic.
The theory about blond king being AgustD from his first mixtape is not the theory at all, Yoongi said it himself. And he was blond at that time too. His first mixtape was full of anger, pain and greed. Now he is calmer and more healthy mentally, so he is killing his past self. But did the mad king really die? Nobody knows.

This is different form of Kpop that is known as K-Hiphop/Rap which is his main specialty that is really the genre where he can fully express himself while staying humble as Suga of BTS. *The meaning behind “Agust D” ~ It’s “Suga” spelled backwards and in reverse “D T” is short for Daegu Town which is his hometown and name of an old underground rap group that he was a part of as rapper “Gloss”.* SUGA stage name comes his favorite basketball position “Shooting Guard”.
OMG MY BOY HAS COME and GONE LIKE A PRO AFTER PLACING ANTIs, HATERS and CRITICS in their place on top slaying his ARMY 👀🙀 with his hardcore swag, rapid rapping, beast mode beats & traditional tempo and visuals (PAST AGUST D vs PRESENT AGUST D) dont even get me started with the fashion. I was holding my breathe the whole time seeing him getting up from the throne walking into the palace ready to put someone in their place, bodies on the ground, 😹 Jin & Jungkook pretending to fight behind Suga, BTS members hiding in plain sight and brings a modern car into traditional korean dynasty while battling his innerself then goes into nasty slow flow rap like RM did in DDAENG. It came to the end I was literally on the edge of my seat when he was being taken what looked like he was going to get beheaded while AGUSTD is showing off his sword skills then Suga takes the gun shooting the dark side of himself like a boss 😎 I noticed he used some beats with allot of phrases that he did in their BTS comeback trailer interlude: SHADOW. When I saw the scar, I remembered how much he loves scarface and reminds me abit of scar from lion king with mortal kombat vibes. The BLACK FIGURES behind SUGA presents the fandom: ARMY, he’s basically saying goodbye to his past because he’s ready to move on to a new chapter of his life. *Daechwita is a korean form of marching music that old armies used as they marched into battle or kingly procession; his old & current self fighting for domination over his present life. During his first mixtape he makes many references on how SUGA (stage name) kills Min Yoongi which is his true identity. Now, Agust D the raw savage side kills off the king and SUGA sits down from royalty; if i’m not mistaken, last emperor of the country. The concept/theme is a traditional dynasty where the long hair is indication of wealth and Agust D shown dressed in authentic kingly garments, It was also strongly frowned upon or forbidden for anyone with scars could never be royalty but with this track & music video breaks that stereotype by having Agust D shown with a large visible vertical scar on his eye which expresses even people with scars can be royal on top of showing how powerful his presence is which reminds me of kdrama Scarlet Heart: Ryeo 4th prince where he had a scar but became king despite of it but I also remember how much Suga loves Scarface. IN SIMPLE TERMS HE IS BASICALLY FIGHTING TO TRY STAYING HUMBLE AS A TRUE GROWING ARTIST / RAPPER by confronting his past self. Almost everyone had that reaction and for anyone who doesn’t know or recoginze him, he’s Suga of BTS a globally famous male kpop group, this is his solo alter-ego which is a self-produced solo artist/rapper, if you haven’t seen his first one; Its 2016 ‘AGUSTD’ mixtape. *THE PHRASES “I born a tiger I ain’t no weak pill popper like you”, he was born to be true to his craft not stray from it 😝 ... “We so fly we so fly private jet we so fly”, he’s talking about his groupmates BTS on how swagged they are then you see him bump into Jin (In a beard? Lol) who turns for a second and jungkook accidentally walks into the fishing pole that Jin is holding & they pretend to fight ... “off with their heads”, he doesn’t mean literally cutting their heads off but more or less he’s cutting their heads off with his words. Hahahaha, you know he’s not Suga when he DISSing justin timberlake when he says “cry me a river you just got no skills”* KIDDNG #AGUSTD2 #Confrontation #Daechwita #BTS

Some of my fav women are 30+ and I still can’t fathom how no one has wifed them up or started a family with them. This is also a bad way to think as it holds no space for what if she doesn’t want a family or husband. That’s okay for men why not women. It’s a weird double standard but I’m aware of it at least.

Shove the past in a rice chest - explanation taken from doolset: "The line references the story of 사도세자 (Crown Prince Sado), who died of starvation by being confined in a rice chest, which was by order of his father." If you wanna see the Korean movie "The throne", it retells the story - very dark.
Muish blog has a detailed historical context, more so than doolset which is short and sweet, if interested.
On the same note - when he said Gwanghe flow, it refers to an "insane king" in Korean history, paranoid and bloodthirsty, but also impressive in a few ways. King character might be his impersonification or reference. Personally, I think we are getting a continuation in the third mixtape/album. Just like I think the "king Suga" from Daechwita is the same character from the first Agust D mixtape.
P.S. I so wish your bts reactions were more popular, because I am not sure anyone will be able to fill in for me - but is the song Itgma (Don't Forget) somehow related to bfree? Also with respect to your discussion of psychedelics and Ego dissolution …. RM is a deep thinker and voracious reader, and he was hugely impacted by reading about the psychological framework of Carl Jung. You mentioned Freudian terms (Ego/Id), Jung was a disciple of Freud and then took the shit to the next level. He described the “map of the soul” and reframed our understanding of the unconscious and how our repressed childhood traumas manifest as shitty adult behavior. Jung’s theories were the foundation of modern cognitive behavioral therapy. And yes it is being scientifically validated that small doses of certain “ego dissolving” psychotropics in controlled conditions can allow people to make huge leaps in therapy as they are able to gain new self awareness and face inner demons with less fear.
The 2019-2020 BTS “Map of the Soul” series is based on RM’s interpretation of Jung’s ideas. If you want to go deep check out the three tracks Ego, Persona, and Shadow, named after Jung’s terminology. RM, Suga, and JHope take one each as solo tracks, each has a music video and the lyrics and visuals will have your head spinning brother! That is right up your alley with how you like to think on it, you will not be disappointed!

All three BTS rappers are often introspective in their lyrics, reflecting their thoughts and experiences at any given moment.
You've seen "Born Singer" (I'm so bummed I can't see your reaction to it here), so you've noticed how even in their early days, they'd already reflected on their debut experience. The song was written just days after their debut (June 13, 2013) and days after J. Cole's "Born Sinner" was released (June 18), and it was released on July 11.
That's why if you explore their discography over the years, you can see their growth as people and as artists.
For example, you can see how they view their haters evolve over the years. "Cypher 1-3" (2013-14) are still very aggressive as they're out to prove themselves to be legit rappers. By "Cypher 4" (2016), they don't care anymore about their haters, advising them to love themselves. For "Mic Drop" (2017), RM tried to write a diss track but the result sounded inauthentic because he didn't feel the anger anymore. With J-hope's verse as a guiding point, the song ended up a flex song, instead of a diss track. "Ddaeng" (2018) is more of a playful song, instead of aggressive. "Ugh" (2020) is more of a social commentary that laments how meaningless anger from haters is devaluing legitimate anger towards social injustices.
(For both "Ddaeng" and "Ugh", you'll need to pair your reaction with the explanation video from DKDKTV as there are references to Korean words that you'll need to know to understand the songs. Both are bangers you won't want to miss.)
Because the rappers write their own verses, you'll see their names credited as songwriters in most BTS songs. RM has the most credits (around 210 now) because he also writes lyrics for songs for the vocal line, as well as for another group (TXT) under Big Hit.
