    The one crying at the Grammy awards was Jungkook, the youngest member and all round emotional and sweet guy. He is quite empathic and lives and breathes music, so he easily gets pulled in and engaged.

    I think skipping early works would mean skipping some of BTS's most hip hop heavy works. While displaying samples on a "crash course" involves catchier choruses, these choruses work in tandem with rap verses. I would recommend starting with their 2013 debut features No More Dream and Bulletproof Part 2 then evaluating where your head is at rather than letting the "schoolboy" book cover be a source of prejudging the book's contents. This period generated their first three Cyphers, Hip Hop Lover, and more which literally are BTS album tracks so there is material which is in your wheelhouse. I have seen some rap oriented reactors say early BTS is their favorite period.

    Actually in my opinion the School Trilogy albums are the very core foundation of Bangtan's sound and what we now hear and understand as their music today. It is a very necessary part of their springboard and journey so don't let the description fool you. The songs are absolutely great and showcase their hip-hop side out of the gate AND the lyricism is definitely there as well. Great reaction!

    By school themes, BTS means criticizing a harsh school system and the concept of society determining your goals for the future. Their early albums have lots of socially conscious music that set the groundwork for BTS as a group. This is the stuff that set them apart from other groups and you can see this foundation stay with them even as they grow and experiment with other types of music. I highly recommend you watch the Rise of Bangtan series as you go through the albums because it gives cultural context for their music and journey. Each episode discusses an album except episode 1 covers intro and pre debut content and the Wings episodes goes over a couple of songs each (Wings was massive!). But these early episodes ( and their music at the time) are extremely important to understanding BTS as a whole.

    • @dici1396
      @dici1396 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For example when you get to the first album (whether you listen to the whole thing or pick some songs), you should hear their hidden track “Path” because their music really displays their thoughts at any given time.

    When the Grammy interviewer was comparing BTS to the Who, it wasn't because of the whole package, but how their albums are put together and how their songs follow a connection. You can get good vibes from BTS by listening to their individual songs, but you get their message by listening to the whole album from start to finish. So just like the Who told stories in the albums, BTS did the same as well. Honestly he was comparing them to rock legends based on their art instead of just other boy bands based on their good looks and target demographic, and I felt that was the furthest thing from a diss that any interviewer in that time could have done.

      As others have pointed out the comparison was a valid one. The Who were incredible in their era and their staging and performances in an age with no in ears, no backing tracks and very little in stage effects were great for the time. BTS has a different approach based on social commentary but in their own way they are magnificent. They are both story tellers.

    The "Big 3" are the 3 big entertainment compagnies in South Korea, : JYP , SM Entertainment, YG. They dominated the Kpop industry (Idol system) since 20 years, they have not only the money, but the power and the connection with all the entertainment média, radio (payola system) , and TV show (Kpop is born with TV show, they are very important). Every Kpop group have to work hard to succeed, and Kpop industry is very compétitive, but the groups who belongs to the Big 3 have what is called "the Big 3 privileges" : large media cover, daily radio play, invitation in ALL the TV shows. It's help a lot ! So during years and years, only the Big 3 groups wins awards on Korean or Asian Award Show ... until BTS.
    From a business point of view, Koream culture is hierarchal and strict adherence to this hierarchy is mandatory for everyone. For a small unknown company (Bih Hit) with ragtag idols (BTS) to dare to compete with the big guns is near blasphemy; so every effort is taken to ensure this system is not disrupted. That's just how things work. BTS and Big Hit was différent since the pre début. They don't have money, they don't have connections, they don't have power. Just their talents and raw potential, their hard word, dédication to their fan base, and ... freedom. Big Hit let the boys have control over music (and it's NOT a common thing in the Kpop industry at all ) , express their opinions, allowed them to talk about issues that many in SK society wouldn't, like mental health, school pressure, disparity in societal classes and so on. This mindset, added to the lack of fund and connections, made them an anomaly in the Kpop Industry. Their authenticity and their passion attracted fans , not only in Korea but worldwide. They begin to grow... so the Big 3, who at first, look down on BTS, tried to buy them, fail and so tried to block BTS from broadcasts and TV promotions. BTS being creative, went around the establishment and develop their own shows, their own media platform ( Weverse) and used youtube to subvert the industry. Which made people in the industry mad so they tried to sabotage them through made up scandals and accusations, with the active help of their own groups fandoms. BTS went through a lot of hardships, and Army fandom too, (that's why the bond between Army and BTS is so strong) but they succeed way more than anybody can predicted. But they still don't get the media coverage they diserved in their own country, because even if their Compagny Hybe (formely Big Hit) is one of he richest now, the Big 3 still have the power...
    Sorry, I'm way too long, but the underdog story of BTS is something to know and study, really :) I recommanded you to watch the docu série The Rise of Bangtan, I'm sure you will enjoy it and find it very interesting. Aneesa (the creator) has been working on this series for over 4 years. She is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. She uses clips from different video clips of other idols/ journalists interviews to try to give a broader perspective of the industry. Very well done and fascinating.

      From the gate BTS were singing about following your own dreams, and as a 40 year old I need to hear that. Absolutely their early work shouldn't be over looked, even if they were singing to school aged kids, the fears and anxieties from back then don't suddenly stop once you reach adulthood. I wish more new ARMYs and reactors would just go back and listen to BTS from the beginning and follow their journey.

    NO, don't skip the School Trilogy! Don't try to prejudge anything, it's worth going through it all believe me otherwise you miss a lot. So hope you change your mind, it doesn't mean that they were childish or anything like that, in fact they were doing things no other group dared to do. As a fact, S. Korea at this time had the highest suicide rate in the world from 10-20 yr olds (not counting older) so their message had impact on lives. They came out swinging, so NEVER prejudge anything BTS do, especially musically 'cause you'll get it wrong, believe me. Take that as a learning point from here on out.
    And yes, in Wembley the staff and fans arrange to surprise BTS in this iconic moment. If you want to see more amazing fan moments you should see the Brazilian fan chants. Amazing!
    No V was the one with the coat rack, and it was JK at the Grammy's getting so emotional. The later Intro videos will update you on them all, although some of the older videos are good and worth watching don't base all the info on the group on them as the later videos will bring you up to date. XCeleste's, Asian Theory, Taylor Mari and Rise of Bangtan (when it's reuploaded to YT) will be your go to guides. I might have missed some but these are the main agreed ones that are good.

    Haven't seen a lot of people react to this of late, but it's actually a good crash course as they said, though outdated now. Just so you know, even though the eras are compartmentalized according to phases of life so far, they somehow manage to hit a chord in people at different stages of life.. It's one of the reasons why they got the attention of such a wide demographic. I think with their introspective nature, they really capture some potent universal experiences in a way that makes you see life newly. So the school era too has absolute gems like Tomorrow, Spine Breaker, the Cypher pt 2, We are Bulletproof pt 2 (which is the dance practice with the hat trick) etc.. Their honesty and unwillingness to go with rotten systems right from the start is why know the kind of people they are. They still believe in fighting the good fight. I actually think you will really like a lot of their old tracks coz you'll see what really makes BTS different. They were small and didn't have power backing them, but they still spoke their minds regardless of whose feathers they were ruffling. They spoke against the systems that oppress the youth. Lots of sociopolitical critiques that are incredibly astute considering how young they were. And those points they made still stand true for a lot of the world today.
    The Big 3 Korean companies were SM, YG and JYP. Until BTS started winning, all awards used to routinely go to the artists of those 3 companies. BTS were mocked for being from a poor company and shunned for daring to dream. We say BTS' rise was tough and they fought against all odds coz there were so many attempts by the industry and fans of other artists to defame them and crush their chances. The same people now try to claim credit for BTS or copy them shamelessly while refusing to acknowledge their achievements. It's pretty frustrating to be honest..
    The one dancing with the coat rack is V. That was his solo song Singularity and he is absolutely bewitching performing it. And when you spoke about the one who was so elated watching the Grammys performances, that was Jungkook.. They truly enjoy music and performance sooo damn much. They are such a breath of fresh air in all these award shows honestly. They really know how to have fun in a sea full of stuffy people who refuse to react to other performers😁

    It's insane how much BTS have achieved year after year, it's hard to find a really good documentary on them because once that video gets posted BTS have already achieved so much more. They work so hard, as you heard in the rapline albums so far, they are still striving as if their lives depend on it. BTS never stop and ARMY will be here beside them until the end.

  • @marirezende8478

    I think it would be a shame to skip the school trilogy tbh, and dark & wild, some of BTS's greatest gems are there, and the topics don't all revolve around school hahahahaha they discuss various topics, for example: there's a song talking about the different provinces in Korea in which the members talk in different accents representative of said province (they're all from different cities, but some cities are in the same province, most of BTS are from Gyeongsangdo - Jimin, Jungkook, V and Suga, Jimin and JK from Busan and V and Suga from Daegu -, but there's also Gyeonggido - RM and Jin, from Ilsan and Gwacheon - and Jeollado - J-Hope, from Gwangju), and they "fight" to see which one is the "best one" and it's just a genius, amazing really fun song. Also, extremely difficult to understand without the help of a Korean person, so you'd have to do the "Explained by a Korean" video after, or go to doolset, but doolset has a wayyy longer explanation (it's better imo).
    It's also their most hip-hop heavy era so you'd miss on that too 😔

    • @BrilliantHuman

      @@Jurnalist_ It's the Satoori rap (satoori is the name for regional dialect in Korean)...I've seen Koreans react to it and they get so excited and proud to be represented. For context, there's about 52 million people in S.Korean and 25 million of them live in Seoul...so everywhere else is considered the "provinces" and those in Seoul can be snobbish about accents and regional differences.

  • @kabazinga
    @kabazinga ปีที่แล้ว +14

    22:51 it is the school trilogy that happened because it was what the members were living at the time but i would say that it is not as directly related to school as you might think, it's more about hopes and dreams, societal expectations, young love, members' thoughts about music, industry and the life at the time

  • @femmy-syahrani
    @femmy-syahrani ปีที่แล้ว +20

    If you're not interested in exploring all the eras, *I'd recommend starting with their 3-CD anthology album, "Proof (2022)", which is like a summary of their musical career.* The *first CD* contains the lead single of each of their albums (18 songs, plus a new song). In the *second CD,* each member chooses one of their *solo songs and a unit song* (the most common unit being rappers-only or singers-only, but it can be any combination of the members). (Suga chose Cypher pt. 3 for his unit song.) (14 songs, plus a new song). The third CD is only available in CD form, containing demos and unreleased songs (except a new song, available online).
    This way, you'll know how their sound has evolved over the years, without having to explore the whole albums. Maybe, as you listen to each song on CD 1, we can tell you what other songs in that particular album are standout tracks. For example, Suga's "First Love" in the album "Wings" is one of my favorites from him, about his love of piano/music. But there are several amazing tracks from that album.

    The school theme was about supporting teenagers NOT to just do school, but to follow their dreams! South Korea has a strict school system that breaks lots of kids. The school songs were about rebelling against the system! Dabble in each Era. Guess what. When I came aboard I knew nothing. I picked everything randomly. Do what you want. Do you. That's what BTS would say to you. There is no right or wrong way to do it. Lots of Army are very opinionated. But only because they LOVE BTS and don't want you to miss anything. Yes. The staff set it up for fans to sing to them!

It's true that most of the american interviewers, specially between 2016 and 2019, were lazy, ignorants, and just ask always the same stupid questions to BTS. But this one compared them to the Who, not because of their music, but because, as the Who, they have a fictional storyline that run through some of their albums, MV, notes, mobile game and books ! It's called the "BU", aka Bangtan Universe. This fictional storyline is one of the thing that attracted international audience in BTS's music, but this interviewer is the only one who talk about the BU !!! The other journalists or Tv host never had interest for BTS's music and story, they just want to talk about good look, girls, crazy fans or american artists they want to collaborate with !

Don't be put off by the description, there's many hiphop and RnB style songs sprinkled into every era, but especially during their early years. I think BTS became even more massive during 2020 because of their good heart and their good intentions. They started the year with a whole plan of a world tour and when pandemic cut them short, they embarked on a whole series of activities and projects to keep ARMY (and themselves) afloat. That included showing us behind the scene bits of the whole process of creating an album about their feelings during those trying times (it became the beautiful "BE"). And that process ended up getting Dynamite on their hands, and the rest is history

    10:57 the big three are the three main entrainment companies (sm, yg and jyp) in korea who used to dominate the market, the award shows, media, everything because of money, history, connections etc probably still dominating the media to this day

    • @oldest__dream
      @oldest__dream ปีที่แล้ว +4

      they are still dominating bcs BTS doesn't get the media coverage that they should be getting. i thought armys were exaggerating but i saw so many korean ppl surprised that ppl from all around the world traveled to korea just to see bts for the busan concert.. they were like "are bts that popular?" saying that about bts as a korean in 2022 is mad to me idk 😭

    • @h.vgavriel5838
      @h.vgavriel5838 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yes, they are still dominating. Even if Hybe is now richer than the Big 3, the compagny don't have the same power and connection on media et TV shows. BTS don't get the media coverage they deserved for their achievments, because they succeed outside the system (and against him to speak frankly)

    BTS (with support from their agency Big Hit Entertainment) partnered with UNICEF for their Love Myself Campaign, and they were invited to speak about it at the 2018 United Nations meeting. You should react to that speech that RM gave, and you will understand more about why they were there. They really do stand up for youth and the underdogs of the world. And ARMY's were a part of the equation, because they in turn support the cause and help to raise money for it, and it tranlates as real world change. That wasn't their goal to start out, but it just grew into that.

  • @VAngel876
    @VAngel876 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    First time they went to the Grammy's they were like kids in a candy store. You see Jungkook there crying and the boys all singing along with every performance. But by this last year they realized how tainted this system really is. Because BTS has a story arc that is really 3 different arcs in one once you start looking into the music and the arc you are compelled to continue to buy the next album that is the continuation of the story you are listening to in the next album. Plus they had 4 different themes of the same album in cover and photocard compilation so everyone bought multiples of each to make sure to get a complete series. In each era of their music hip hop played a huge part of their catalog. In fact they were very hip hop centric until they got to the "Youth" era, also known as the Most Beautiful Moment or HWYH. After that point they began to do more "kpop" type music even though within that "kpop" the genres covered are very different pop, rock EDM, R&B, and of course more hip hop.

Their early discography is just as socially conscious as their recent stuff. Their lyricism is so important and it’s important to note that all 7 member’s participate in all the albums whether its songwriting/composing/producing.

Like I picked the best songs of each album, and recommend if you really liked the vibes of those songs to check out others from their album. HYYH, LY, MOTS album series are telling a story from their Bangtan Universe (which you don't have to get into if not interested) so a lot of the songs are interconnected with each member having their own storyline (though they all come together as 7 friends). It's some beautiful work! It even has a K-drama now lol

    @laurahilliker5336 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @Jurnalist, i’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to view this one you when you went live but I am here to talk about three school trilogies of BTS‘s first three albums and why it is important for you to listen and watch the MVs ! now please hear me out these three albums are very important because then the beginning BTS were very heavily into hip-hop in 2014 they went to Los Angeles and were mentored by several popular hip-hop artist Warren G and Coolio (RIP) The name of the reality television show in LA was called “American hustle life“
    In the beginning the CEO Bang PD wanted the boys to be very hip-hop orientated. different from the other K-pop idol groups that were present in 2013 so he sent them to the United States to get some true information where hip-hop comes from not just learning the techniques and the cadence and the flow of rapping, two of the rappers RM and Suga of BTS were underground rappers way before they were even in BTS. So their knowledge was pretty well developed but the other five members were not so much with hip-hop at all. J-hope who was also very hip-hop orientated in his dancing that he was in a group called “neuron” and it was a hip-hop Street dancing group that did many different shows and they won many awards even at the international level and he did this when he was very young 12/13 years old he was recognized for his talents, j-Hope learned how to rap while he was a trainee he got some help from Suga and RM from BTS! J-Hope developed his own flow and cadence!
    Getting back to the three school trilogy albums those three albums talked about the school system now there is A lot difficult school system all over the world, But this is not only about boy/girl angst love songs! BTS are up in your face addressing school system and the government for how they put so much pressure on students that the highest suicide rate are between the ages of 13 and 19 years of age in South Korea that’s no joke you can look it up! It is the highest work wide!
    This is what happens in South Korea if you are a student and if you want to be a trainee in the idol music industry this is your day from the time that you get up in the morning at 6 AM or even earlier you go to school then from there at three or 4 o’clock in the afternoon you learn how to rap ,dancing, sing, English lessons and then you continue to do more schoolwork and studying until 10 o’clock and sometimes 11 o’clock at night then you go home and you do it all over again! That’s how they push the young people not only if you don’t want to be an idol it’s still difficult because they want their students in South Korea to be at the top level so they push 12 hour days of school onto these students. Some parts of the school system are so corrupt in South Korea that if you want to get your child in to the best school first of all you have to be one of the elitist, pay bribes! now you say that this might be the same thing that it’s in the United States not as harsh and not is driven as it is in South Korea! These kids that are going to school they are so pushed and pressured that they are even considering of taking their own lives now that is what really disturbs me the most about the school system in South Korea !that they have no mental health for the kids not like they do here when there’s tragedies and things that happen in South Korea they just started doing it more some mental health just in the last couple of years! BTS every album is relevant to their discography !so your western opinion without even listening to them or reading the lyrics or doing the research is just very disappointing because you’re not giving it a chance there discography starting with these three albums !BTS early albums are going to peak your interest and I guarantee you you’re gonna like a lot of the songs once you read and do some real intensive listening!💜
    Please give it a chance🙏🏼
