John has been singing this song since late 60s early 70s. It is a cover of a Three Dog Night song. There is a video on TH-cam showing a very young John singing it. It is in black and white. Age of Reason from that same concert is a favourite of mine. So is Playing to Win. Thanks for your reaction.
This is one of John's earliest hits, back in the late 60s or early 70s, and my favourite version of this great song. One is the loneliest number refers to breaking up - you were 2 now you're 1.
One was recorded and released by then known as Johnny Farnham in 1969 . One it’s a cover originally by singer songwriter Harry Nilsson in 1968 made famous in USA by rock 3 Dog Night around the same time John released the song in Australia. Back in the 50’s through to the early 70s Australian recording companies had a different release dates for some songs from the UK and USA at latter date . So this created a loophole time for Australian artists to listen what their record company has had sitting in limbo so Australian artist will record their own version if they find a song they like . One is an example of this , John’s version ended up outselling the 3 Dog Night version within Australia. John did the same with Raindrop Keep Falling On My Head originally by BJ Thomas in 1969/70 which John’s version ended up being the the more successful version within Australia. Once the record companies from the USA and UK realise what was happening in Australia they made more Australian releases to happen in line with releases from the UK and the USA .
Yes. THAT VOICE! No need to make sense of the words. One song you should react to LISTEN TO THE WIND, live in Brisbane; but then again; so very many to choose from; all of his performances are epic!
One is the Loneliest Number ....when you are on your own. single and lonely
Yes he is a true performer one of the best on the planet
Crouched over almost double accepting cards and flowers from audience and STILL belting out the lyrics with perfect pitch !! Love that man !!
Its when your by yourself ,one person .
An absolute legend. We love him so much.
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do. That's always made sense to me.

I never understood the lyrics either. In fact I rarely even listen to the lyrics...just THAT VOICE!
