Something to note at least from my experiences: The bow allows for either an extremely aggressive or highly passive play-style, you can sit back and use coatings to support your team, get up in the monster's face with close range coating, counter flying monsters easily with a barrage, and generally do whatever you want so long as you keep a watch of your stamina. This a surprisingly intricate and fun weapon despite it seeming like R2 Spam City.
A huge thing you missed, Ruri, (you also didn't use it during the stream) is that the bow is a bit like the hammer. You can hold R2 without aiming to run along at full speed while charging shots. While charge-dashing is 'faster', it's also much less stamina efficient and shouldn't be used unless you're at mosh-pit ranges or need to evade a hit. If you need to shoot and scoot, you can simply stop aiming and charge while re-positioning. This gives the bow a LOT of basic mobility that wasn't really covered.
It's a super basic utility that isnt very flashy but incredibly important. Its one of those things where people either dont know it exists or they assume its there automatically and dont really think much of it because dodge shots exist
I know this is old, but you don't hold the r2 button down to do the most damage, just click it, since it changes up the bow faster and does more damage. Im sure you guys know that now
All of the coating decos are tier 3 decos. All of the damage boost decos for the bow, such as the powershot boost and dragon piercer boost decos, are also tier 3 so you kinda have to make the decision of having coatings not standard with a particular bow or boosts to certain attacks. Imo, powercoat is the only deco worth equipping... and I don't have one of those so I'm not entirely sure if they exist in the game.
As a Bow user I aprove this well done guide. Maybe you should mention that Bow mostly have higher elemental damage than flat damage so Dragonblight will make you considerably weaker if you dont have careful.
I believe the Legiana 4-piece set bonus is also available as a decoration, so once that drops you can freely ditch the Legiana set if you want to. I also read that the "wall-run" shot uses the same aiming mechanic as the dodge, 'locking on' to where you shot prior to the dodge as long as you don't touch the right analogue stick.
As a player who mains the bow, I find this video very informative. Each ability, damage, and mechanics are all explained very well and in depth. Great video, man.
I've been maining the bow since release with a little use of the hunting horn for SOS missions and had NO idea that I could backstep into a melee mount. Thanks for the video dude. Your becoming one of my favorite Monster Hunter TH-camr slowly but surely.
I've always been a long sword user and used the bow for some of the more brutal close range aoe monsters this video is very well thought out. The bow allows for consistent damage out put for solo players the damage you do is always going to be good at a steady pace mastering stamina flow and damage out put and monster combo timing the bow can out dps any weapon in the game while maxing your survivability
Hey man, you are amazing at explaining tutorials. This video helped me out so much! I've been having a hard time beating a diablo with my long sword, so I tried the bow out. I liked the bow, but wasnt using it to it's full potential, mostly button mashing... Also... can you make a video tutorial on life, in general. 😅
Still learning the game, not even 20 hours in yet. Strictly have been using the bow - thanks for the informative guide! Definitely have a much better understanding of the properties of the bow and how to weave my attacks :)
Bow seems savage strong mid to late game. In high rank and beyond when you can stack up key armor skills to really boost its strengths and reduce its weaknesses it is actually godlike. Low rank tho, it seems fairly inconsistent. It works great with a large stamina pool and stamina use reduction skills. The dodge move can be used to amazing effect if you don't run out of stamina.
joemama114 this is true. I’m a solo player and low rank and boy is it difficult. It took me 40 to 50 minutes to defeat Anjanath my first round, granted I didn’t know how to mount and mechanics of charge stepping until this video, but nonetheless, it was a damn hard fight. I was in the edge of my seat the whole time.
With how detailed you get with these videos, we may be here a while for the bowguns. I mean the shear number of munitions and variables is kind of insane.

Rurikhan, I don't know if you had this in your Insect Glaive guide, but I just discovered that if you air dash at a wall and hold sprint, you will stab it with the Glaive and hold on, allowing you to jump up and climb without sheathing. This "climb" is even faster with white buff, letting you climb faster than those without a glaive!
PSA, collect the ammo/coatings that are given to you in the supplies when you start quests even if you can’t use them, if you ever decide to use bowguns or bows after collecting ammo/coatings from quests’ supplies and put them in the box, you’d save up some money on the basic ammo/coatings.

For PC when doing the wall shot if you hold the direction you want to aim at with WASD you will fire that way. You don't even need to actually aim in that direction so it's very useful imo.
I was wondering if the Legiana armor set was optimal for bow users since I personally love the stats it gives (and its design....I'm a sucker for light icy blue), but your video pretty much settled that for me. Coincidentally I also like pairing it with the Flying Kadachi Strikebow since it gives good thunder damage and has good affinity. Loved your video a lot! Very good straightforward advice and I liked how you encouraged people to explore the different coatings/elemental damages each bow gives. Other people I've asked plainly say to stick with power and not really encourage or explain other coatings. Thanks a ton!
I do love the bow in that I haven't tried anything else yet besides Lt bowgun but I do like the bow and am trying to master shooting from a wall run to kill nergigante

poopikins yea, charge lvl+ one. There is also spreadshot decoration and normalshot decoration, both very rare. I got them as a melee user, had to switch to bow because these decorations are so good.
Colourful Banana there's also piercer deco which boosts dragon piercer and a deco that boosts powershots although I think it is the spreadshot/powershot deco (increases powershot for bows and spreadshots for bow guns).

This was a good video explaining the bow very well and its main point , slide and shoot, constitution. There's a build with the tobi on one of these vids. He s got tobi bow , tobi alpha helmet for constitution and other stuff. There's a lot of different builds I guess to maximize this beast. I like it better than the Lt bg
you can also chain the lunging melee attack by dodging backwards and lunging again. and again. and again. and mounted! the attack itself doesn't cost stamina, and refills faster then what the backwards dodge costs. so when you are empty you can keep attacking like this and don't need to sit at the sidelines 'till you recharged.
I could be wrong but this is from my experience. It does not matter what *kind* of Bow you use. (Unless it's stronger, naturally) But most of the time this isn't an issue as even something like Kula-La-Ku tree Bow can be just as good as an Anja Bow. Really it just depends if you wanna do Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, or whatever.
Was expecting the intro to be like: "How would u like to say that you are vegan while secretly penetrating and destroying entire monsters with your dragon piercer? The bow will allow you to channel your inner hengest. Extra big bombs are advised."
A must have skill for bow is also the lvl 3 50% affinity bonus for hitting weak spot. critical damage is very nice for dragon piercing and multi shots.
There is a level 2 decoration for extra bow charge. I think it’s called “might bow” or something like that. I got mine from a tempered elder so I don’t know if other level/monster investigations will drop it.
Rurikhan I have a question. Do you think that the bow makes the game too easy? I defeated one of the elder dragons (the fire one) on my first run just by running away and shooting from a safe distance. What is your opinion on that.
Rurikhan Bow has always been good though, in fact most of them always have 1 crazy bow that almost breaks the game lol. It's a tad easier but keeping distance and shooting is kinda what you have to do OP
Knights of the Nine i disagree, Bow is honestly one of the easier weapons, when i cant beat a enemy i switch to bow, i take off coatings (cause i use up to many powers on something idk if i can kill) and win due to me never being in the danger, stack juice and extended dodge and its really OP
Fighting with a bow is really the most fun game style for me. MH3 is the only other game I played and I still can't decide in which game it was more fun since no scoping was a lot easier there. I always have the feeling that I am shooting a little too low in MH World.
Looping the Lunging Melee Attack recovers your stamina, even though you're using Charging Sidesteps. So use up your stamina and then spam your friendly mounting arrow until you're ready to shoot again!
@ 22:23 "It doesn't have any invincibility frames" - How come I can dodge a monsters roar stagger with the charging sidestep? Did they update that nowadays or what am I missing? @25:10 The lunging attack also does slicing damage and can be used to cut off tails! Great video by the way. Really valuable informations!
Stamina Thief is an amazing ability to use while solo with the bow. Arc shots deal impact damage, which makes them a tool not just for KO's, but triggering exhaustion. Enemies that attack quickly, hit broadly, and can cross distances staggeringly fast, like Anjanath/Diablos/Nergie can cause a bow user considerable heartache if allowed to attack at full pace for extended periods of time, which is where Exhaustion and 'absentee arc shots' come in nicely. I'll also point out that while the bow can be effective, it's absolutely garbage when dealing with groups of small monsters (jagras/shamos/girros) unless you're using a seriously high powered weapon. It lacks any substantial area effect attack, being a precision weapon at nearly all times. Even against small Large Monsters like Kirin or Tzitzi, you'll find that the difficulty goes way up when dealing with something that mandates substantially higher aiming skills (and Kirin doesn't care you need an extra fraction of a second to level a shot)
Zourin I merc groups of smalls. I think its more playstyle with the bow than anything else. Im super aggressive and even mount monsters with my bow, crowd control as well. Aint no thing.
Bow ain't got a thing on the whirlwind axe attack from the CB when dealing with smalls. You can hit one thing for 10-20 damage with a bow or 40-80 damage to everything nearby with an uncharged CB. If I need small kills, I just put the bow away.
Zourin Wasnt really saying I use it to hunt small creatures. Just that I can CC in any fight and im procing left and right. Im highly aware of the elitism in weapon choice in this community, monster hunter not the channel, so ill stick to my bow or my switch axe.
Any chance you can make a video on Palicoes? I've been using _Xeno Set α_ as it seems pretty good stat-wise but do the stats for Palicoes really matter? I think I'd rather use something that looks cool or cute. Keep up the great work with the videos! Josh Teixeira Palico sets don't really matter tbh. The weapon is really the only difference. While your Palico may take more or less damage depending on its armor, it can't die so it doesn't matter as much. If you're really reliant on your Palico for things like vigorwasps or coral orchestras it might mean something to you for your Palico to stay alive longer. Hope this helps, happy hunting
I wish there was a bow armor set. For now I have +3 constitution and marathon runner and the stamina recovery speed one but my character looks absolutely horrendous.

If you are dashing foward and pressing y or triangle you can do a small jumping attack wich weirdly enough on an unmounted pink rathian it only took two jump attacks to mount him its not very good per se but it does work if you connect wouldnt reccomend it for more than one or two mounts just cause its quite unsafe but it does work weirdly well
hi Rurikhan! i love your MHW videos thanks so much! please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that charging bow to max level and then dash and shoot, dash and shoot to keep the bow at max charge... is not better than just keep shooting suppose your charge shots do 17, 44, 75 damage respectively. on this table below broken up in 9 "turns" you see that (keep shooting dmg) | (dash and shoot dmg) 1) 17 17 2) 44 44 3) 75 75 4) 17 (dash) 5) 44 75 6) 75 (dash) 7) 17 75 8) 44 (dash) 9) 75 75 total dmg for just keep shooting: 408 total dmg for dash and shoot: 361 also in the table above, i assuming dashing takes the same time as shooting a arrow, but i believe its actually slower, so just keep shooting seems even better! only in the case of if applying status (sleep, poison, etc) then dash and shoot is better! Thanks!
johnsonjj117 yea, archers kinda change how I play the game, too. I would bitch and moan about it but they do a lot of damage so I give my forgiveness and grab that green buff as soon as I can.
You know, I think it may be possible to obtain a decoration that gives you the armour skill that gives you an extra charge level and are then able to use that skill with another armour set that gives different skills, but I could be wrong.

I decided to learn bow when switching over to the PC version of the game and although I have 16 hours with bow I did not know you could do a neutral mounting attack
Is there no way to lock your aiming reticle? I play on PC but use an Xbox1 controller, but on keyboard+mouse controls you can press 'c' to lock your aim vs. controller you have to hold down LT to aim. Thanks in advance for confirming!
The good news is that dragon piercer deals sever damage and can cut tails. The bad news is that it is probably one of the worst dps moves in the bow's toolkit. That being said, few things feel as satisfying as breaking a Diablos' horn AND severing it's tail in the same hit.

Probably worth making sure you power up your shots if you're using power coatings. Single shots are kind of a waste when you can charge it up and it's still only counts as one shot from
Craig Powell actually Arrekz Gaming has already proved that rapid firing with the R2 "combo" is more damage than the old traditional way of charging to level 3. Even if you burn through coatings a bit quicker
Craig Powell for coatings like power it's good to use the trigger combo, but you're right when it comes to status effects, it's better to be conservative and use charged shots to inflict a stat
KidAnime20 Yea if it is at close range but that's only appropriate for status effect coatings. When your using any of the strictly damage coatings then it's better to counter strike my opinion and hit the monsters as much as you can when you have a good opening but that is thats my gameplay. Hope this helped if not then just keep looking through more bow vids.

Yeah bow gets WAY stronger once you get access to mighty bow, power shot/normal shot decos and 2piece Rathalos set bonus.
Dont see how at all. I beat the dlc with dps that fucking sucks.

Real men mount with bows.
A little thing I found out is that you can cancel the dragon piercing round by removing/applying a coating.
Dodge charge has I frames for roars, u can dodge roars

As a bow main I must say dash juice is pretty much mandatory. Not only is a dps boost but it's also your survivability with more side steps

A must have skill for bow is also the lvl 3 50% affinity bonus for hitting weak spot. critical damage is very nice for dragon piercing and multi shots.

There is a level 2 decoration for extra bow charge. I think it’s called “might bow” or something like that. I got mine from a tempered elder so I don’t know if other level/monster investigations will drop it.
Rurikhan I have a question. Do you think that the bow makes the game too easy? I defeated one of the elder dragons (the fire one) on my first run just by running away and shooting from a safe distance. What is your opinion on that.
I agree that the bow feels overturned, it's almost like they are compensating for previous games.
Rurikhan Bow has always been good though, in fact most of them always have 1 crazy bow that almost breaks the game lol.
It's a tad easier but keeping distance and shooting is kinda what you have to do OP
Different enemies are designed to be easier/ harder for close range or long range weapons.
Knights of the Nine i disagree, Bow is honestly one of the easier weapons, when i cant beat a enemy i switch to bow, i take off coatings (cause i use up to many powers on something idk if i can kill) and win due to me never being in the danger, stack juice and extended dodge and its really OP
Try to solo A rank Azure Rathalos arena with the bow, then come back and explain to me exactly how easy it was
Fighting with a bow is really the most fun game style for me. MH3 is the only other game I played and I still can't decide in which game it was more fun since no scoping was a lot easier there. I always have the feeling that I am shooting a little too low in MH World.
Looping the Lunging Melee Attack recovers your stamina, even though you're using Charging Sidesteps. So use up your stamina and then spam your friendly mounting arrow until you're ready to shoot again!
the "pretty cool wall jump that does a little bit of damage" is the highest DPS attack in the entire game out of every single weapon.
Yea ive had it chunk lunastra quite alot shoots like 6 or sum arrows and they all hit like a truck

It does have i-frames. But only near the very start. Same as the basic roll.
Stamina Thief is an amazing ability to use while solo with the bow. Arc shots deal impact damage, which makes them a tool not just for KO's, but triggering exhaustion. Enemies that attack quickly, hit broadly, and can cross distances staggeringly fast, like Anjanath/Diablos/Nergie can cause a bow user considerable heartache if allowed to attack at full pace for extended periods of time, which is where Exhaustion and 'absentee arc shots' come in nicely.
I'll also point out that while the bow can be effective, it's absolutely garbage when dealing with groups of small monsters (jagras/shamos/girros) unless you're using a seriously high powered weapon. It lacks any substantial area effect attack, being a precision weapon at nearly all times. Even against small Large Monsters like Kirin or Tzitzi, you'll find that the difficulty goes way up when dealing with something that mandates substantially higher aiming skills (and Kirin doesn't care you need an extra fraction of a second to level a shot)
Zourin I merc groups of smalls. I think its more playstyle with the bow than anything else. Im super aggressive and even mount monsters with my bow, crowd control as well. Aint no thing.
Bow ain't got a thing on the whirlwind axe attack from the CB when dealing with smalls. You can hit one thing for 10-20 damage with a bow or 40-80 damage to everything nearby with an uncharged CB. If I need small kills, I just put the bow away.
Zourin Wasnt really saying I use it to hunt small creatures. Just that I can CC in any fight and im procing left and right. Im highly aware of the elitism in weapon choice in this community, monster hunter not the channel, so ill stick to my bow or my switch axe.

Any chance you can make a video on Palicoes? I've been using _Xeno Set α_ as it seems pretty good stat-wise but do the stats for Palicoes really matter? I think I'd rather use something that looks cool or cute.

Josh Teixeira Palico sets don't really matter tbh. The weapon is really the only difference. While your Palico may take more or less damage depending on its armor, it can't die so it doesn't matter as much. If you're really reliant on your Palico for things like vigorwasps or coral orchestras it might mean something to you for your Palico to stay alive longer. Hope this helps, happy hunting

For now I have +3 constitution and marathon runner and the stamina recovery speed one but my character looks absolutely horrendous.

Critical element is real with bow as well. Critical boost 3 and critical element is fantastic. Fitness charm for Constitution lvl 3.

I am so hyped for Iceborne, we will finally be able to mount monsters a bit easier with the bow.
If you are dashing foward and pressing y or triangle you can do a small jumping attack wich weirdly enough on an unmounted pink rathian it only took two jump attacks to mount him its not very good per se but it does work if you connect wouldnt reccomend it for more than one or two mounts just cause its quite unsafe but it does work weirdly well
The bow is a swiss army knife, it k.o’s, it cuts tails and keeps you at range with status effects

please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that charging bow to max level and then dash and shoot, dash and shoot to keep the bow at max charge... is not better than just keep shooting
suppose your charge shots do 17, 44, 75 damage respectively. on this table below broken up in 9 "turns" you see that
(keep shooting dmg) | (dash and shoot dmg)
1) 17 17
2) 44 44
3) 75 75
4) 17 (dash)
5) 44 75
6) 75 (dash)
7) 17 75
8) 44 (dash)
9) 75 75
total dmg for just keep shooting: 408
total dmg for dash and shoot: 361
also in the table above, i assuming dashing takes the same time as shooting a arrow, but i believe its actually slower, so just keep shooting seems even better!
only in the case of if applying status (sleep, poison, etc) then dash and shoot is better! Thanks!
As a bugman the arc shot is my bane. Nothing like being knocked out of the air by falling debris.

Yeah, bow mains should NEVER arc shot in groups. It's way too easy to screw over your team with it.
Can you go over the weapon stats a bit? What does the "+" symbol next to the paralysis coating mean?
You know, I think it may be possible to obtain a decoration that gives you the armour skill that gives you an extra charge level and are then able to use that skill with another armour set that gives different skills, but I could be wrong.

So what's the point of the bow if it's doing like 11 damage when you can use a greatsword and get nearly 100 damage?
The bow can shoot 10 shots from afar in the time it takes the greatsword to get 1 swing in.
CHRZZ the bow is more relaient on elemental dmg, so a low dmg number doesnt matter too much.
Later on you can get the legianna set bonus in a gem, allows for a more flexible build

I decided to learn bow when switching over to the PC version of the game and although I have 16 hours with bow I did not know you could do a neutral mounting attack

Is there no way to lock your aiming reticle? I play on PC but use an Xbox1 controller, but on keyboard+mouse controls you can press 'c' to lock your aim vs. controller you have to hold down LT to aim. Thanks in advance for confirming!
The good news is that dragon piercer deals sever damage and can cut tails.
The bad news is that it is probably one of the worst dps moves in the bow's toolkit.
That being said, few things feel as satisfying as breaking a Diablos' horn AND severing it's tail in the same hit.

Probably worth making sure you power up your shots if you're using power coatings. Single shots are kind of a waste when you can charge it up and it's still only counts as one shot from
Craig Powell actually Arrekz Gaming has already proved that rapid firing with the R2 "combo" is more damage than the old traditional way of charging to level 3.
Even if you burn through coatings a bit quicker

Craig Powell for coatings like power it's good to use the trigger combo, but you're right when it comes to status effects, it's better to be conservative and use charged shots to inflict a stat

Yea if it is at close range but that's only appropriate for status effect coatings. When your using any of the strictly damage coatings then it's better to counter strike my opinion and hit the monsters as much as you can when you have a good opening but that is thats my gameplay. Hope this helped if not then just keep looking through more bow vids.
