Its amazing how each weapon is so unique and different from one another. So much so that so much as switching weapons means learning or relearning new strategies.

Very nice video! Question for you, does the colour of phials effect the amount of charge you get for your sword and shield. For instance is it better to wait until you are about to start bouncing to charge your sword? Or have full red phials before charging your shield?

Behind the Dice wait till red, bouncing means that you over charged
Actually you get 1 phial per sword swing that connects, so 5 swings and reload
One thing maybe worth mentioning about charging the sword - the only requirements for charging the sword is to have the shield charged - you can have 0 phials and a white phial gauge and still do R2+O > T(hold) and the sword charge will still work.
Obviously you'd rather be charging phials when you're doing it, but in a pinch it works fine as long as the shield is already charged.

To add to this you can keep your sword and shield charged with 0 phials as well. Makes it easier to keep the buff going into multiple different fights easier as you charge them up in between as long as you charged the shield.
From what i gather more phials just extend the duration
Phials affect the duration of the Shield charge (30 sec per phial). The Sword charge however always lasts for 45 sec regardless of phials.
So if the Phials don't effect sword duration, is their a reason to want more phials when charging sword?
When you're in axe mode u can hit triangle and circle to do the amped element discharge right away and right after you do a guardpoint u can hit triangle and circle to do the same
I remember watching this video before I bought the game, and seeing how cool it was; the weapons, the armor, the monster. So I bought the game and started playing it... and then I realized that I was the same weapon as Ruikhan, I was fighting the same monsters, wearing the same armor. I found it so cool that I was on a similar level. I don't know how to describe it but is was awesome. Thank you Ruikhan for helping me enjoy and appreciate this game.

This tutorial was beautiful. I am a HR 50 player who only played dual blades, hammer and long sword before attempting this... simple weapons. After searching for tutorials on charged blades for an hour I found this and am now a charged blade player after 30 mins of watching. Love the streams. Keep up the good work Ruri!
I was having trouble wielding the charge blade, until i saw your video, you really did a step by step walkthrough and after seeing many other youtubers, you are the only one who really explained how to charge the vials properly... you just got a subscriber ... keep doing those vids

Man thaaaank you! I must've watched 10 videos on how to properly use the CB (MH newbie here) and yours was by far the most detailed and well explained. I went in and now I finally feel like I got a grip on this weapon. Thanks a lot for the vid!
I'd like to point out something you didn't go over that I think is very important to know.
While attacking in Shield you can press Direction+O to Command Dodge (game says it's called Sword:Sliding Slash). I don't know how strong the invincibility is on it however I've never been hit while doing it. It's really good at sliding under and around attacks that your Step Dodge just can't get around. It will always end with a Spinning Slash so keep that in mind when the charges are full.
Also on still monsters/downed monsters Charged O>Triangle+O can loop into itself making gathering quick phials really easy.
Last but imo most important, phials effect the Guarding Frames of attacks in a much better way than most people know, especially Impact Phials. If you learn how to use the Guarding Frames properly while your shield is charged you can KO a monster for a free discharge on their head. It's very important to know your phials as you can abuse them in different ways. It really makes Charge Blade shine in many different styles of play.

Been using the Cb for hours, it’s hard to be able to land the Super elemental discharge , as the final hit cannot be controlled and lands only in one spot?
Star Wars: The Last Jedi The Super Discharge? Abit new to the names since they just added them. You can't change the direction of your strongest discharged once you start it. I usually aim for my weapon to miss so all the phials will hit. I might be using it wrong though. I hope it helps ether way.

We refer Super Amped elemental discharge as SAED while Amped elemental discharge as AED
Yes, the normal AED where you press circle, circle , circle 3x and the final hit you charge up your sword and do the impact. That entire movement cannot be controlled right? It’s a stationary movement?

Yes the whole thing seems to be stationary. Feel free to contest that in practice. If I'm wrong I'd like to know what more I can do.

So it’s only best to use SAED or AED on a downed Monster head?
I am still getting to learning CB and so far fighting the Rathian and dying hilariously 😅. Only the morphed axe mode can hit its tail , otherwise I have to use sword/shield to be mobile and try to hit its head
Reading the “Hunters Notes” for the controls for this weapon was an absolute nightmare. Watching streamers destroy things and trying to figure out what input they were hitting was no use. This. This right here was the start of my charge blade journey and by god it’s been amazing. Thank you sir.

I mean yeah, if you don't realize you can charge anything (essentially utilizing only half of its potential)...it's decent for range, close combat and mobility.
But NOT knowing you can CHARGE the CHARGE Blade...lol! You must have legit crapped your pants when you saw all that extra damage you'd been missing out on for like 50+ hours lol. If I were in your position, that would've been like Christmas to me.
Well I knew you could charge the phials and use them in axe form. I thought that was the full extent of the weapon, since that's exactly what the description says. I tried figuring out all the diffent combos, but I didn't realize that I actually had to interupt an attack I was already doing to unlock an entirely new mechanic of the weapon. This game needs better weapon tutorials.
I've been playing with dual blades and have just now discovered the charge blade. This video has truly helped me understand it better.
Great vid, you've made me want to go back to the charge blade. It was the first weapon I used but I got distracted by all the others.
Your relaxed style (including you messing up certain moves) makes this a lot more understandable than certain other people's vids where they just rattle through the move sets too fast.

Rurikhan, thanks for this video. I've been playing around with the charge blade (switch axe was my mainstay) since launch and I thought I was figuring it out pretty well. Turns out there was a lot more to learn. The pointers are much appreciated.
One thing, can’t remember if it was mentioned or not, but blocking an attack can also charge up your vials as well.

George Diaz Nope, it will charge up your vials even if the shield itself is uncharged.
This includes friendly hits. It will charge regardless of what hits the shield. I tested it with friends.

Thank you, the one and only charge blade tutorial that actually explains anything not just shows flashy combos without button prompts. Why in the holy hell one of the most important moves to this not even listed in the tutorial and require an animation cancel....
unnero1 It’s not an animation cancel, it’s a charged attack. Like other charged attacks you have to time it right.
It is though because you are canceling your discharge animation into it ( referring to the shield charge), just like the sword charging move, but the real issue I had with them was without these guides there is no way to learn these as they are vital moves to even the basic use of the weapon and they are not even mentioned in the game, maybe for a split of a second in the middle of the phial fill and discharge animation but I'm not even sure of that.

Just bought MHW and I knew a lot about the charge blade, but didn’t know some of this stuff before. Great video, honestly. It’s extremely detailed.
Rurikhan thanks so much for this video, it really helped me get the fundamentals down for the charge blade. I don't know if you knew this, but after I found out something neat for setting up that S.A.E.D. After you do an overhead axe swing you can roll backwards for set up, and immediately go into it. Your character will stay locked facing forwards even though you rolled backwards. This enables you to get that full S.A.E.D swing damage in because of the better positioning! Thanks again!
I started this game with dual blades, then went to sword and shield, and now I've started using this finally. It's such a good weapon. Really I wanted to use it the whole time but I wanted to get a grip on monster Hunter in general first and now that I have God DAMN this weapon is so satisfying. You just wreck monsters like it's nothing sometimes (as long as you know your monster and know your moves).
This video made it so easy for me to learn thanks Rurikhan! Now to master those blocking frames..
One shortcut you didn't mention: when in axe mode, you can just press triangle+circle to go straight into the (super) amped element discharge, without having to do the circle attacks first.
Also, triangle and circle attacks can be mixed together in axe mode. Since the second circle attack does more damage, you can do triangle, then circle, instead of circle then circle, to save yourself from using a phial.
Lastly, after any attack, you can do a side hop, by dodging to the side, and after any attack (or a side hop) you can push the stick in any direction and press circle for a sliding slash. This attack has a guard animation at the end, and so does the 3rd triangle attack in the sword and shield chain, or the triangle attack after the hold-circle charged attack.

It's one thing to *know* a weapon and it's an entirely different thing to be able to *explain* it to someone that's never used it. You can explain weapons, even complicated ones, in ways I can actually understand *much* better than anyone in any of the other weapons videos I've watched.
You missed a few things. If you think you don't have enough time for a super amped discharge but you're in the animation for starting it up, you can pull back and hit triangle/Y to do a normal amped discharge and only use one phial. Alternatively you can refresh your shield charge by hitting R2/RT.
You can also go straight into a (super) amped discharge in axe mode by hitting triangle + circle /Y + B at any point.
Those blocking frames on certain attacks are called guard points, and any input while in the guard point animation will put the weapon into axe mode with the appropriate move being used INCLUDING (super) amped discharge.
Yooo I did not know you could downgrade the amped elemental discharge!!

Good video man. Ive been using the Charge Blade since the beta and man-o-man it is very technical and very satisfying when you hit a monster from head to toe with the elemental discharge. One thing i did get out of this video that i never do, which im going to try to incorporate is axe mode. It never came to my head charging my shield and then using axe mode to do damage to air monsters or a downed Rathalos, and trying to break something quickly. Good vid man.
I use the Hammer and the Kinsect Glaive most of the time. For people complaining about how complicated the Charge Blade is, but want to do massive damage while still having some mobility, the Hammer is fairly easy to pick up. Hope Ruri does a video on it soon. Love your easy to understand videos man. Subscribed!

New player here, not only to the game but the series in general. I fell in love with dual blade, but always wanted to give the charge blade a try. After seeming a few vids and realizing it may not be for me, I found your video. I like to think of myself as a proficient gamer, some games take me a little longer to get the hang of, others dont.. this was one that was taking a while. I loved CB in previous games... but it just blows my mind how great it is and feels in World. Hands down my most favorite weapon in the game. Guard-pointing through attacks and laying waste to monsters with a fully charged Super Amped Elemental Discharge is insanely satisfying.

You're the first person on TH-cam I've seen talk about the charge move (circle button) in sns mode with such great detail... I never knew how important the timing was and was wondering why everytime i tried using that move it looked so lame and ineffective. I wish there was an easier way to charge your shield (i heard best way is right after r2+triangle gp, but that is tough to pull off), but cb is insane as it is so can't complain. Anyways, great video keep up the good work!

Few more tips on using the charge blade: after charging ur phial, u can press O again to go straight into the first phial attack and following the blocking animation (guard point) u can press △and o to get into amped elemental attack.
Coming from the older games, I was so confused as to why I would randomly go into Super Elemental Discharge while in sword mode. Now I know it comes from pressing Left/right mouse button (shield thrust buttons) twice in a row. Thanks!

There are no other tutorials for pc so I had to adjust to this nice tutorial man.
As a charge blade main i really like how you explain every single move you can do with the weapon, and even tho cb is the most technical weapon in the game you explain things very good that most newbie players will understand. So all of you guys who are new to the game and want to try cb this is the guide you should watch, tho you will not learn everything instantly after watching this, this will give you an insight on what you should and not should do with the weapon.so with practice all this moves will be second nature you.

Thank you so much for this. I figured some of this out with a kind of bad text guide I came across, so I knew how to charge the shield and sword, but like...I didn't know about the shield bash, or that you could combo the overcharged strike into it, which is a MUCH faster way of charging the shield than switching to axe mode first to do it.
nice video but the reason for the R2+triangle block is that u can follow up whit a elemental discharge tri+O and if your shield is charged ... :)
Also another thing about the charge blade is you can instantly go into the amped element discharge (either one) right after charging the phials or at any time really by clicking Y+B at the same time while in axe mode

You can go straight into an SAED directly off a guard point by pressing tri+circle it’s one of the primary reasons to use a GP. Also a more efficient version of your final combo from a positioning perspective is sword charge, fade slash backward with circle followed by an SAED.
Yo man this is the BEST chargeblade tutorial i seen, i been using only the weaker amped discharge spinning the axe than landing the discharge hit lololol! Smh, wow man im in hr 30s now, but better late than never, i didnt even know you could charge the sword too.
Having phials stored during the super amped discharge will determine the size and range of the last hit. 0 is just a powerful melee, 3 adds a single row ranged elemental discharge and 5 sends the blast out in a cone shape if it's an elemental phial type

It took some time to get the flow down, but once I did, I feel unstoppable. I can face tank gigantic hits, and crush skulls with my Super Amp.

dylan120997 dodge is your friend along with the sliding slash. I hardly ever use my shield unless im in a tight spot
Stephen Wright I always get shit on by one of the instant attacks even when dodging and I only get hit when I’m close up. Like on Diablos he swipes side to side and it gets me near everytime. Some monsters im fine with but others annihilate me. Do I need to learn guard points and use the as much as I can or what?
dylan120997 ya with Diablos you just need to tire him out like i don’t attack him for a while just dodge him and hit him with screamers while hes under ground. The only time i hit him is when he’s diving, popping up or stuck in a wild spire and i just straight axe him for max damage

Also if you critical block using the block frames you can press circle+triangle to immediately go into amped elemental discharge. It's a great way to retaliate after a block.

Damn your video on this weapon is amazing. I've been using this weapon for a while and honestly had no idea about the charged shield and sword modes. I remember seeing the shield icon pink before but had no idea what it meant until now haha

You are doing some phenomenal work on these weapons. Great Content. If it wasnt too much to ask I am majorly struggling with Palico Gadgets i dont know how to find them and i dont know how to even start the quest for them. If you could do videos on that i think it would help a lot of people because that questline is not explained well at all.

I'm using the Insect Glaive as my first weapon and really enjoying it. I like the idea of the kinsect as a secondary weapon and have figured out a few things just from playing. I like to try and get my 3 buffs and then hit the monster with the back of the glaive or shoot it and just let my kinsect go wild with the dust. It's been great when I respond to SOS flares so people can hit them themselves for ailment damage or for healing.
I love it when there is another person using it and we're both flying through the air hitting the monster at the same time, it looks amazing. This is the first time I've really played MH. I tried one of the older ones and didn't really get it but I'm addicted to ths game. Once I have all the Glaives and Kinsects I think I'll try the Switchaxe next after watching your video on that and then maybe try this one after I have mastered those.
I just learned this. And if I may add for the SED, once charging or filling up all your phials, just press triangle + circle 2x then R2. That way you may charge your shield faster.
SAED does not crit. So if your play style is to just spam the SAED your most important skills are artillery and capacity boost. And just need raw dmg
im glad i chose this path of weapon, this is now my fav wep to use now thanks for the guide it was hard to figure things out at first but i had to understand the things to PC keys. thanks again
So couple things like if you want to charge your phials and there are no monsters around get your teammate to hit your guard and your phials will charge another this is when your in ace mode and a monster scream staggers you mash the amped discharge and it will come out much fast this may be a bug but I’ve done it multiple times to counterattack a scream and it helps a lot also gets you killed to so know when to use it.
I’m new to the MH series, I love the CB! I like how the game has such depth to it all! Definitely turned me into a new fan!

You can also go straight to AED or SAED after guard point(the blocking animation) too by pressing Triangle+Cricle after successfully blocked the attack. This make CB really good at counterattack the monsters.
You can do this with just normal block too as long as the your character don't lose the balance after blocking the attack(that might not work against the heavy attack that blow your character way too far.).
It would be interesting to see you do a video on the Insect Glaive
Ive seen like 5 or 6 videos on the mhw charge blade abd this is by far the best. Im a dummy so theother videos seem to not explain enough or go too fast for me to comprehend lol great job. I was gonna sub but i checked and im already subbed xD

I think a usefull tipp ist that when you are in axe-mode while you shield is charged and you have phiols you can instantly do an super amped dis-charge by pressing cycle and triangle. Then like in another comment, after you block an attack with an guard point you can also start an super elemental dis-charge by pressing cycle and triangle. The first move allows you to do an very precise super amped dis-charge for as an example cut the tail of an monster or somthing like that but keep inmind that before you smasch your axe on the ground your character is moving forward so keep a bit of distance when starting the dis-charge. The dis-charge after an guard point can be used against diablos all the time he jump out of the ground and so on...
