    How to cut the bearing edge on a typical plywood drum shell. This is the shell that I cut in half in the previous video!

    Don't wipe the dust of your bench like he did people, that's a self correcting error.

    Thanks for the great clip :) I usually manage to cut the outside angle very even and smooth with the router, but the inside angle with the same blade tends to get a bit bumpy. Nothing seriously bad there, but still... any tips for avoiding that?? Have you tested different bearing edges to the batter and reso side? i usually make a 45/30 edge to the batter side and a 45/45 edge to the reso side. Also, the reso side edge is a bit sharper than that of the batter side

    How did you measure the existing bearing edge to get the correct angle? Thanks.

    Mr Murray, your videos have been a great help to me and my restoration projects. I'll see if you're on Facebook and send you a photo of the quality of my finished product.
    But please between two drum lovers do not get into the habit of wiping the dust of your table while that router is running still. The blood splatter would indicate you've done something silly before the pain kicks in. It's probably just an unconscious thing you do but like I said in an earlier post it'll be a self correcting error if you take your fingers off, which in normal terms means you'll only make the mistake once.

    SNARE DRUM!!!!!

    For a maple 6" snare what are the major differences between 30 degree round over and dual 45's. I want a good mix between a warm sound and a bright sound. And also I've seen when milling the inside of a snare drum leaving about an inch on top and bottom a little thicker and taking more out of the center. What does that do?

      Obviously this is an old question, but I’ll answer in case anyone else is wondering the same thing - a 30 degree edge will give you more of that ‘warmth’ while dual 45s will give more crispness. I like a combination - ‘warm’ edge on batter edge, ‘crisp’ edge on reso. Even a full roundover, or an outside roundover with a 45 sloping towards the inside on the batter is very nice. The full roundover (“baseball bat”) on the batter gives you a FAT, warm sound that’s very distinct.
      The thin shell with thicker bands top and bottom is about leaving some meat as re-rings to keep the drum round, while thinning out the center will give you a lower fundamental and a sensitive, articulate drum. Thin shells are IT for my sound, they have a feel and sound that can’t be beat. Re-rings keep the thin shell true and give you lots of surface area for a good bearing edge.

    Why do you take the bearing edge off first?

    What router bit??

  • @alvaroruizruiz7538

    Which roundover router bit radius should I use for a proper roundover outside edge?

    • @MurrayDrums
      @MurrayDrums  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to use a 1/8" (3.2mm) radius round over bit for the outside edge, but you could use a 1/4" (6.4mm) radius bit if you want a bigger round over. The radius shouldn't be any more than the shell thickness though, or ideally no more than half the shell thickness if you want to do a fully rounded baseball bat type edge.

    How would you cut the internal bearing edge with a reinforcing ring in place?

    • @MurrayDrums
      @MurrayDrums  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be done the same way, except the bearing on the end of the router bit just runs around the inside surface of the re-ring instead of the inside of the shell. As long as the re-ring is the same thickness all the way around, then there should be no problems.

    Did you just guide this freehand? Is it easier than it looks? I'd be worried about screwing up the circle without some sort of guide, but I'm not an expert

    • @MurrayDrums
      @MurrayDrums  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the router bit has a bearing on the end of it which runs around the inside or outside of the shell to make sure your depth of cut is the same all the way around.

      @@MurrayDrums what is that called and where can I buy it? lol thats genius

    • @MurrayDrums
      @MurrayDrums  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joedoherty1062 Just look for bearing guided router bits. You can order them on Ebay, or from Screwfix or Axminster if you are in the UK. Most chamfer bits and round over bits have a bearing on the end of the bit. The bearing is just a little metal wheel that stops the bit cutting too deep.

    Isn't, a guide or brace neccesary for straight Cut rather than Freehanded. ?

      There is a bearing on the router bit guiding the drum along the cutting edge

    Can someone tell me what router table he is using? Is it possible to find one under $200?

    • @MurrayDrums
      @MurrayDrums  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is the one I use, which I got during a sale. I think it was around £100 at the time, which is around $132. The usual price is £160 ($210) www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+power-tool-accessories-router-tables-xact-deluxe-router-table-xact-deluxe-router-table-rutlands+rtx2000
