Murray Drums - Recutting Bearing Edges On Yamaha Kit

Hi folks, just showing you how I check and recut the bearing edges on drum shells using my new granite surface plate. I use the same process on my own shells and also on old shells like these vintage Yamaha drums, which have been dropped off to get the edges repaired.

When I had to even out a drum shell (like in your first step), I used a granite kitchen tile. It’s perfectly flat apparently and it’s size is 60x60cm (about 24”x24” if I’m right). Worked a treat. But then it’s not reference quality like your block. Nice job on the good ol’ Yamaha!

Hi, if you want to be shocked, check brand new drums. ANY brand new drum from any major manufacturer. They will look alike. All manufacturers have moved to CNC cutting, and they suck at bearing edges.

Uhh, I think after leveling just smooth the bearing edges with sand paper by hand!! A little warmer and less overtones!

I'm not sure to be honest! Shells appeared to be some type of Mahogany substitute, possibly Meranti (Philippine Mahogany) I'm sure the badges said made in China, so guessing this was one of the lower Yamaha ranges.

I know the 5000 series are made with Phillipine mahogany, I think it is not all mahogany, but it's in there
