- This 2012 Sonata with the 2.4 liter engine rolled in with a myriad of different symptoms including a CEL, low power, and long cranking time. This being a direct injection vehicle with a fuel system problem, it provided the perfect opportunity for a video. I hope you enjoy!
This is what is called expert troubleshooting analysis.
So far the best explanation of testing these GDI and Pressure control solenoid I've seen here on YT and the web in general. I'm now about to release a GDI injector and pump solenoid tester precisely to diagnose these issues. Great job on this video.
Thanks so much, I do hope that it hopes people to better understand these systems and not get intimidated by their troubleshooting. Let me know about that tester!
@@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 what test leads do you got for snap on scope original leads are real short
I know it's a learning curve. Hope I didn't discourage you. It takes a lot of intestinal fortitude to put yourself out there. Keep up the good work. Your channel is one of my top four to watch. Great content.
Not at all brother. I knew it was an issue before you even said anything. It has just taken some time to sort of figure out how to properly address an audience lol. Feedback is what helps me to improve!
Great video. You're the kind of guy that stealerships charge$100/h+ for. You are NOT the type of guy that they typically provide for that charge. Soon, I plan to upload videos of diagnostics done on my Solarity. Thanks again!
Man thanks wish your garage was near me....honesty is wonderful
Wish I could give you two likes. I don't have the tool you do, but just using simple ODB2 scanner I have I was able to mostly assume our high pressure pump was going out on 2013 Santa Fe Sport with 2L turbo. For those interested, the Hyundai parts store on amazon has genuine OEM for about $300 brand new.
Another valuable video 🙌🏼 Congrats on reaching 1,000 subscribers. You're on a roll Joe 👍🏼
Thanks so much man, you'll be right there with me. I enjoy your channel and am excited for more vids from you!
Triangle Diagnostics Thanks Joe 🤝I'll keep on filming when I can 🎥💨
Excellent video, you should be in the class room. I'm a technician in the Caribbean and this system (GDI) is kicking a lot of guys asses here especially the Mitsubishi ones. I should have you come and do a seminar, wish I had a chemistry teacher like you.. lol.
Haha I don't know about all that, there is still a ton I need to learn on these systems. I'm just glad to have cleared a few things up for all of you.
leomcalla29 yup. I own two Mitsubishi with Gdi engines. one is a 2001 and the other is a 2003. Most mechanics are afraid of them.
Edward David that's true I think Mitsubishi hasn't got this GDI right at all, I feel a lot more comfortable working on toyota and Vw GDI systems.
Edward David there is no gdi on 2001 mitsubishi.
Thanks for taking the time to upload such high quality videos. I always learn from you and your professionalism. 👍🏻
I've just come across your channel : I like the way you talk, explain, present your case studies and repairs. SUBSCRIBED! 👍👍👍
I have had many of these Hyundai/Kia GDI fuel systems fail here in the uk and they tend to be the low pressure fuel pump causing the prime pressure to be low putting the stystem in to limp mode. the common cause is when a fuel filter is replaced either a rubber o ring is forgotten,or the a seal is distorted causing air to be drawn in with the fuel preventing the high pressure pump to create the correct pressure.
A good check would be to do a manual fuel pressure check on the low side and see if the pressure holds without the pump running, it should hold at about 70 psi
Nice vid, just an observation, there was no inaccuracy on the fuel rail pressure sensor with the low side disabled, this is a GDI system and 26 PSI of pressure is not enough to go inside the combustion chamber, there was simply higher pressure inside the chamber than pn the fuel rail, also when you saw 1200 psi in the rail after letting the engine seat even with the high side pump not active is due to fuel vapor due to the elevated temperature in the fuel rail, keep up the good vids
That is kind of what I was thinking too, I'm glad you cleared that up for me. Thanks for watching mate.
Don't remember how I found your channel, but so glad I did!! Excellent work.
Enjoying your videos 👍 Syptoms are common to high pressure fuel pump failure. Change the pump and your good to go. Good luck.
Just a superb video with a lot of information and insight. Thank you for taking the time to teach us. That one mistake of crossing up the traces for intake and exhaust are completely understandable, and I knew the intake was before the sync notch, and you caught it anyway. Great job!
Wow what a good lesson, I have the same problem on a 2013 Chevy equinox 4 cylinders thank you for your info
I really enjoyed this video. You didn't say "guys " one time either. Great diag and walking us through everything.
It's a constant learning experience. I am working hard to improve the overall quality of the videos and develop my public speaking skills.
Nice diagnosis & repair. Keep the videos coming and your subscribers will grow. Great video.
Thanks so much man.
good work, just done a pump on a 07 Jetta. The tappet"name ?" that runs on the cam was worn the same shape as the cam. Cam lobe was wiped out as well. 89,000 miles.
There is some form of activity on the ground side of the fuel pressure control solenoid, which you showed the ground activity with the positive side activity so we could see how they all co-relate. Very good vid however, you have jus earned another subscriber, keep up the good work!
Good Job not getting lost on the cam crank waveform seeing how the crank was inverted some may have chased that. But your exactly right you still would of had High pressure
It's very easy to lose your way during a diagnosis sometimes.
A++ bro this was good one. I really enjoy your troubleshooting. GDI is system I don't have any experience with. This will help. Keep up good work. Cheers
Thanks bud, why'd you change your name?
Having some problems with TH-cam with my payments. Will change it back but I have to wait week or so
Ah ok. Hopefully it all works out.
Excellent. I've been studying up on GDI recently so this was a perfect tutorial. Thanks!
GDI's are the way of the future! They are going to be everywhere soon.
thanks for GDi system overview, these fuel pressure pids are difficult to decepher in OEM data on the Verus, indeed any scan tool. you can't tell if it's high side or low side pids, what i do now is to jump into generic obd and observe the fuel pressure there and I have found that always to be the high side, cheers sandy
Great video. Now i know why I'm having that issue with my 2014 santa fe sport. Guess i will be doing repair soon Thanks for the video !! Keep up the great work.
Very comprehensive analysis. Thanks
your doing great very consise, tru professional, very detailed explanations, already almost 1000 subs keep it up
Thanks so much! I am working hard to do my best on these!
these videos are awesome keep up the good work man
THANKS JOE, good video full of info about GDI fuel system waiting for more. cheeeeeeeeers
You had channel one inverted when measuring the crank. That's why it is different than the waveform from IATN.
We've got a winner! That's a keen eye you've got there friend. Simple mistake I made here that caused some real confusion during my troubleshooting.
Remington Baker Thank you Man to help me understand Waveform little difference.
Didn't you fix the amp clamp? It appeared that you did fix it at 21:37 minutes of the video.
StanleyTv Gaming compare the sync notch high at 35.20 to the sync notch is low at 36.20
Remington Baker I was thinking that myself ,that would have made up for the discrepancy
Very informative thankyou
Great video of the diagnostics, but if you are going to make a 47 min video, it would be fantastic to actually see the mechanical process of removing and installing all the parts. Not just before and after pics. That would put your videos head and shoulders above every other repair video out there.
You earned a new sub!! Like your video!!and diagnostic procedures
Thank you for a most informative video.
Fellow tech, great video. Learned some new good things. Keep up the good work
good one joe, considering the theta 2 engine failures good thing you checked mechanical function.
These suckers love to lock up don't they?
you never know how or when.. i can't even imagine how their going to rectify the problem. maybe like the vw buyback? sucks because i really like the engineering.
Subscribed. I'm really impressed with this video! Thank you!
Hi! How would you go about diagnosing the same code (P0087) in a car that cranks but doesn’t start? I measured 69psi of fuel pressure at the high pressure pump input, while cranking.
Great video joe. Keep em coming thanks
Super common issue. Replaced at least a dozen of these w/ the exact symptoms.
FYI, Hyundai released an ECM software update for these cars to extend the high-pressure fuel pump life. It's a service campaign so they'll do a free update to any vehicle that comes into the dealership.
nicely done video.
Nice video, thanks for the info
Awesome video. Well done.
sweet video you really explain things well. thanks dude
very nice very professional. thanks
Not sure if anyone else already mentioned this but you keep referencing fault P0089 but it's actually P0087
Excellent, do more videos.
Your wish is my command!
I didn't see a hump on the voltage waveform of that solenoid after the collapse of the magnetic field, does that mean the pintle of that solenoid is not closing or moving to create the high pressure on the pump?
Excellent video thank you
Hi I have a 2011 Kia optima SX with 170k on original high pressure fuel pump, I've been having same issues longer crank time and low power would mine be dying without check engine light??
great video!! just wanted to comment on the crank shaft signal. would it be possible that the signal you had was upside down from when you inverted the signal for the amp clamp??? i dont own a verus so im not sure how the function on that
my Sonata is having a long crank issue even after replacing both fuel pumps any idea what else can be the issue? TIA
I’m burning raw fuel out of my exhaust on the drivers side. I can smell gas from inside the cabin and it’s smoking pretty bad from the exhaust as well. I have P089, P0C47, P0503,P0441, P0308,P07E8, P0C4A, P0504. Doesn’t make sense to me why I would have these random codes. Help!!!! Thank you in advance
I drive a 2013 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec Sedan
Nice diagnostics Joe and good follow-up to show the high pressure pump as the culprit. I assume that the solenoid automatically comes with the pump or does that have to be ordered separately? As a suggestion with the GDI pressure solenoid or GDI injectors also and you're looking at voltage, you could place one channel on the hi side and another channel on the low side and of course your amperage on the third channel. If you look at the amperage trace, you will notice that the trailing edge of the amperage slowly decays while the voltage for the high side shows a clean drop in voltage. The reason for this is the low side voltage is interacting with the high side voltage across the coil winding. To see the real picture of what's going on, take the high and low voltages from the PCM and feed them to a math channel in your scope where Channel A(1) - Channel B(2). Then you will see the true effects of how the voltage that's across the winding is creating the current. Nice work as always and keep up the good work!
Hey brother, on this one the solenoid comes with the pump, and you can't service the solenoid on it's own.
By the way you are an awesome techinican!
I guess you need that high a pressure if your driving to Mars! HAHA
Ray Milligan the pressure is competing the cylinder pressure to deliver fuel effectively that’s why its insanely higher compared to old pressure values
Hey i got a question i got a sotata 2014 the only code P0090 i replaced the fuel pressure regulator twice with original parts but the car still doing the same thing any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏
Love troubleshooting btw. Your channel is perfect for random automotive issues that happen. How would I approach a mechanic. This is the exact issue with my 2016 hyundai elantra sport. Started a week ago about. Doesn't stall, still starts after 3~ seconds turning the ignition. I always been sketchy of mechanics. Did basic repairs/maintenance myself. When I go in to a shop and say I have a good idea of the issue. What should I point them twords to get a better accurate diagnosis.
This Video was very good and interesting video
Hi please help, I need to know what that other line is called that has that orange clip on it. Mine cracked and for some reason Hyundai doesn’t know what that is? Until I take it in to them. Please if you can help that be much appreciated
That's the fuel feed line to the high pressure pump. Low pressure
@@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 Can you please tell me the name of the shiny tube you said had to be replaced? I can't find it on the parts site.
I had the same code ,but I changed pressure fuel pump on the engine top but still crank long before it starts, pls what can be the faults
did you ever find a solution to your long crank issue? having a long crank issue after replacing both fuel pumps and now I'm lost what it can be.
Do the pump and feed line get replaced together or do you replace the line only if you break it?
excellent video thanks
Great vid and explanation on why it is the HPFP problem. My 2013 Sonata also has the same symptoms but at least for now, it's been 4 weeks since the warning light came on, I can live with in. The $1000 repair cost seems excessive for such a simple replacement just for quicker starts and better accel. Your vid indicates that the computer is automatically shutting off the HPFP which to me says that the car is still operable just not great at acceleration and long crank. It still runs much better then most cars I've had in the past and I drive cautiously and conservatively. Will I have more problems with the car if I do not replace it? I'm concerned that replacement could cause more problems and if not done properly would expose me to fire and other safety issues. Finally, in normal city driving, the car acts like the "ECO" button is set on (less reactive). Could there be a link between ECO mode and these deficiencies that may be at fault in the computer?
great video.....Thanks
Hi I'm have 2011 Gls 2.4 engin and take mecanic for valve job he put everything back but now is engin start but not running and power gdi pump in engin no power and only start and come code p0340 he remove my head and when after put back everything back is crank but engin not running and missing power on pursure bump and what I'm do
Kia/Hyundai puts reference wave forms in their service data which is then available on identifix and alldata. I’m sure it would be true on Mitchell and all other pro data services
All manufacturers should do this.
My goodness, you look and sound like a young Christian Bale. :D
Subscribed nice video!
So, it looks like if the ECU does not register an increase in the fuel pressure, it will deactivate the control of HP pump.
Good stuff
Shia Labeouf what you doin here i thought you only fix transformers
I have a '17 Sonata 2.4 GDI engine.
99% of the time it starts instantly. But a few times I've had to crank it several seconds before it starts.
Could this be caused by the high pressure pump being in a position relative to the cam lobe that allows the fuel to drain back into the low pressure side?
The car has 36,000 miles. It otherwise runs and performs flawlessly. No CEL ever.
It should hold pressure regardless of cam
very good vid thk you
i really have a troubling problem ....i changed an engine in a 2012 sonata 2.0 gdi ... the customer ran this car in a flood ... it sucker water in the intake and snapped a rod through the block , i replaced the engine , now i have no injector pulse ... but if i unplug the high pressure fuel pump solenoid .. the car will eventually start ... or if unplug the injector harness connector and let the ecu build up voltage for the injectors ... i can reconnect the harness and the car starts ... i have scanned the car 10 times and i have no codes ... which is crazy ... fuel pump pressures are in specs low and high .... i am baffled ... have good voltage to ecu reading through scanner ,,, 55volts to injectors through the scanner .... i am changing the engine harness tomorrow and last will be the ecu .... i feel the ecu is malfunctioning on injector driver (capacitor side ) it's like the injectors or all the plugs on the injection side when plugged in , it causes loss of injection pulse .... it has to be the ECU i see no corrosion on the harness or ecu plugs .... car no codes in ecu ... 0 and all pids show normal ... baffled on this gdi ...
Did that fix the hard start ?
I have a kia optima 2011 with the same engine 2.4 GDI , check engine light came on I scanned it & it was P2191
Fuel trims is 25% at higher loads only.
Am having p0092 on Kia Sportage, I checked everything including fuses and wiring continuity everything is fine but still p0092
Can the fuel rail pressure control solenoid fail mechanically but still show good electrically and the pump itself still be good?
I'm sure that it could, on some of these pumps the solenoid can be serviced independently of the pump, so that is definitely a variable to think about when testing.
What type of scan tool are you using?
very good
A pump that is driven by a cam seems so retrograde. Nice seminar!
I wouldn't quite call it a seminar, but thank you never the less!
Is not the old cars that's how they ran the fuel pump nothing new just the preasure is insane.
That HPFP looks like an old school lift pump on a tractor lol. I bet its a lot cheaper than any
German HPFP!
Too had they are made in Germany 😂
They're expensive, about $400 USD, but at least they're easy to replace. I'm talking about HPFP.
Do you remember how many miles on this car?
Nice !
nice partner
my Pontiac 1997 wont run unless I bend the 85 connection on the fuel pump relay. do you have any idea why?
It's the fuel injector fault. It gives low pressure on fuel rail pressure
almost first...
Does the new Verus save all scanned codes under vehicle history? Very handy feature, especially to go back after clearing the codes/disconnecting the battery.
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics Almost first? Tell him what he's won, Johnny!!
Yes it does and you can save all the waveforms & screenshots to that vehicle record also.
Better luck next time haha.
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics almost firs? you mean waveforms?
I think these engines are known for rod bearing failure it will probably get a new engine before long kia/hyundai extended the warranty to 120000 miles because of it.
They die if they have the crank oil passages blocked from machining debris from the factory. I would guess a 2012 would have died by now if it was going to. Most of the engines weren't affected.
wow! 700 to 1600 fuel pressure, wow!
как то растерянный вид немного у тебя, как будто не знаешь что дальше делать
Omg..Do I spy a scanner danner book
It makes for such fine reading! Pretty much all of the drawers on the right side of that box are crammed full of literature lol.
lol...
Hey reading is fundamental....That's what I was taught :)
F'ing 2022 Recall ... No codes .. no engine light ...
F.Y.I. if anybody is interested on this car Google , Ask an Engineer GDI problems In a nutshell.
The 2010 2.4 is not GDI.
It looks like a 2012. Based on the screen on the scan tool.
@@roundsm18 ...
I see that. Bottom center of diagnostic screen. Thanks
It looks like lamborghini hahahah
Very nice vid!
put a fuel pump in ,and be done with it. these guys go hog wild over these sanners
Oh yeah?
Its fun to know and understand everything thats going on with modern engines. Its the difference between a master mechanic and a shade tree mechanic.
I suspected a HPFP right away. But its fascinating to see how meticulous diagnostic you can research trouble codes.
its a hyundai it broke down before it left the factory
