  • In this video, I will explain how I practice using the New Breed method, including how to vocalize the parts and how to keep track of your progress. The book is a total game changer, and I hope this video helps explain how to best use it.

    Reading through the comments you can sense the appreciation for your taking the time to explain the importance of singing. At first I found singing challenging/frustrating until you start to hear the parts work together as one unit . . . Then it starts to “sing”.

    I too studied with Gary for years leading up to his death. Great explanation and I appreciate your emphasis of the singing. It sets the book apart. I find today’s young adult students are too embarrassed to add the voice. Nonetheless, as you know, the awareness gained from Gary’s systems is applicable globally (so to speak) in your playing. Great tutorial !

    Having studied with Gary back in the 80's for 5 years I gotta say this is a very good explanation of Gary's systems. Just one thing to add Mike. Once you got a system under your belt Gary would make you go through that system reversing your hands. In other words if you were right handed you had to also play the system left handed. Your feet stayed the same though.

    • @Kostis_playsDrums
      @Kostis_playsDrums ปีที่แล้ว

      At what tempo do you have to play them systems in order to consider they're under your belt? Is it just at 60bpm or you have to pick it up to being fast to consider you can now reverse your hands?

    • @macvoutie
      @macvoutie ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Kostis_playsDrums Well by "under your belt" I don't necessarily mean fast as much as comfortable. You yourself would know when something feels nice when you're playing a rhythm. Some of these patterns feel better or sit better at fast tempos, some at slow tempos, some in between. The idea is to personalize these not generalize them. there's no BPM quota to make. When I was with Gary I never cranked any of these patterns I was very concerned about things landing in the correct place at the right time and with all limbs working relaxed so I could move accents around in the patterns and play a 2, 4 or 8 bar fills and come back to the pattern right in sync with the click track. That's "under your belt". The goal is not speed, it's about understanding the space between things in relation to the time. If you can comfortably do that you will be able to raise the click track to where you yourself normally play fast things.

Over the years and continuing there are more emails than I can keep up with requesting NB teachers they can study with and videos from those who studied with Gary. In this way everyone can experience the study as intended with the NB's many moving parts and purposes showing how it was originally taught w/ strength on the development of the drummer. After years I was able to release the series just the other day! So to you, Mike... thank you for kicking my ass into gear! Interesting. I'm not new to singing and drumming, but now I understand the concept of what I saw beforehand. An old drum mentor of mine, he and I never got the chance to go through this. But I know I would have fun with this. Singing and drumming--there's nothing like it. I learned it when studying The Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley.
    How you explained it here Mike was exceptional. I wonder. Could this be emulated just on the drum pad? I tend to air drum when not around a kit and lack access to a kit for practice purposes right now.
    Great video. It's definitely a game changer.

    Hey Mike, great breakdown, I have gone through this book a couple times in the last 20 years or so and I like the additional singing steps.
    It seems my biggest issue has been when to proceed,.. I can say I have spent almost a year or so first time I worked through it and feeling comfortable with the systems and melodies but not knowing when to move on to next system, as in other method books what is a good formula to know when you milked it long enough. I feel almost unproductive as you know you could spend a lot of time fine tuning but not progressing spinning wheels. Hopefully this makes sense.

    WOW, I cannot thank you enough for this. I have been completely lost with this book for a week now. Nowhere in this book does it say to play the melody with the limb not used in the system? Either that or I missed it completely. I read the whole introduction a few times and was still lost as to which hand to take off the hi hat and hit the snare with on system 1 and melody 1-a but now I see I should be plying the bass drum. I guess with the very 1st one I am only using 2 hands I really do not do anything with the left foot?

  • @DanielvanDalen
    @DanielvanDalen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great explanation Mike. I'm always curious to research how students and myself either get aid from singing/counting out loud or if it's actually just making things harder. Were you always into counting out loud when you started playing drums? I also believe that counting numbers versus producing a random sound can aleady be very different in difficulty (even if it's just for the quarter notes). As I'm Dutch I will never smoothly pronounce '1 e and a ' for instance. In Dutch you count ''1tenete 2tenete 3tenete 4tenete''
    Fascinating stuff happening in a drummers brain...

    • @mikemckeedrummer
      @mikemckeedrummer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Daniel! I NEVER sang or anything while playing. Teachers were always telling me to count out loud, but I never did :) What are the Dutch vocalizings for those subdivisions? A while back someone told me that singing drummers (Don Henley, Phil Collins) always had the best feel and time, since they were not only steering the ship of the groove but also leading the melody...and in pop music, melody ALWAYS is the true leader :)

    TY I loved it, I am in the last wave of Gary's students and was studying with Gary when he transitioned. I think everyone realized there aren’t drummers who studied with Gary directly breaking it down/ thanks for releasing yours and also alerting us there aren’t any! More to come from other students VIA Katrina (Gary’s daughter), we remain family to her. If there is anything specific you or anyone else would like to see or hear about for our Gary Chester Family of drummers to address, shoot an email to Garychesterthedrummer@gmail.com. This IS a system that greatly benefits having a teacher and a mentor if you can find it, as we had, so you know it’s normal to want to throw your sticks at the wall lol. THE TRUE WAY TO BEGIN A PRACTICE WITH THE NEW BREED BY GARY CHESTER IS TO PRACTICE 6 times a week for 2 HOURS A DAY AND TO GO INTO UNDERSTANDING THIS SYSTEM IS A LIFESTYLE NOT A QUICK FIX . IT WILL DELIVER TO YOU A RELATIONSHIP TO BEING A DRUMMER, YOUR KIT AND TO TIME THAT THEN CREATES A VERSATILITY VERY FEW DRUMMERS HAVE. THE NEW BREED IS PART YODA "USE THE FORCE LUKE" AND PART TAPPING YOU INTO YOUR NATURAL QUARTER NOTE. I STUDIED WITH GARY AFTER WINNING 2ND PLACE IN THE CARMINE APPICE NATIONAL DRUM BATTLE IN 1983 (7000 DRUMMERS PARTICIPATED) AND I COULD NOT BUY A REAL GIG. STUDYING WITH GARY WAS LIKE LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE! YOU HAVE TO STAY WITH IT, DON'T MOVE ON FROM A PAGE UNTIL YOU CAN GROOVE THE EXERCISE YOU ARE ON IN AN AMBIDEXTROUS MANNER SINGING ALL PARTS AND THE CLICK. IT WAS SO FAR BEYOND A DRUM BOOK OR DRUM LESSONS, IT WAS LIFE LESSONS. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS SHOOT ME A MESSAGE!

It is a little difficult to breakdown what happened when studying with my father, at least to the fullest and with words. However, I pulled together some of the students who will record what they feel is their example, be it technical, personal, and even the emotionality that being a drummer and a musician harvests when meeting your edge - which the new breed and my father def cultivated in even me as a student - not on a kit but with my voice, in the business and def as Karl said...in life for us all and as his kid. It's not easy, but so worth it. I don't have the kit as suggested, but I use the rim of the floor tom for HH2, etc. All the limbs are used correctly, but I do need to supplement the kit since I don't have a fully symmetrical rig :)

      @@mikemckeedrummer I am 56, I remember when this book came out...I would practise 10 minutes quit and go on to something else....Big mistake....So.... I come from that train of thought better late than never....A plus side of covid, I am doing an hour a day and I am now creating some of my own systems! This book to me is one of the best books ever!

    One of Gary's students says to also count the rests....I am not there yet but i WILL GET THERE!

      WOAH! I love that idea...music is a combination of sound and silence. Counting the rests can only help!

    I have to respectfully disagree, sir. Playing on the rim of the snare isn't described in the system. I think what Gary was looking for was the "open hi-hat" sound when the hats opened up at the same time the left hand was striking it. That's the way I was taught, anyway. I could be wrong. But thank you for sharing!

      P.S. I was taught by a guy who was a student of Gary Chester. Just sayin'.

    I do love this however,I would never use this for drum students,this is a great way to lose a students ambition and drive,oh by the easy 930 club rules best sound there,I use syncopation book,it has a more straight forward way of teach8ng and learning

      Oh yeah, it's not for beginners...BUT I have some advanced students that use this during those plateau moments
