I started studying with Gary in 1983 strictly for my reading and time. I had very little interest in studio drumming, though Gary taught me a lot of stuff about the studio. When I left in 1987, my internal time, reading, feel, creativity and mindset on dealing as a professional with others was greatly improved. The concept of singing various lines internalizes what it is you're doing and enables you to place everything around it on auto-pilot and focus on making the groove feel good. A pulse has to breath, ebb and flow like the tides. Cause if you aren't using your feel and you're interpretation of the pulse to the music, then you're just being a drum machine.

I studied with Gary before the first New breed book was written. I would go home practice the lessons week after week month after month for about a year and a half. Gary was still doing what they called jingles at the time . I'd go to my lesson and Gary on any given day may have done the juicy fruit jingle and or the Heineken jingle and he would show me the charts. At some point I wanted to do what he was doing in the studio. I just remember working so hard on his systems to the point that I asked Gary what do you want from me? The answer from him was simple. All he said to me was use them!! So I will repeat that to everyone use Gary's systems. God bless all the great students that studied with Gary for demonstrating the systems. Bottom line guys, use them!! So to conclude what I say to all my friends that are drummers all musicians and students keep your chops up!!

Gary Chester's drumming on Twist and Shout was amazing, difficult to duplicate that sound.

Really cool to hear John Patitucci talk about him as well! I would have had no idea this is what John was doing on the road with Chick at that point, incredible.
