    I have been playing for a long time (50 years) and read drum music,' I studied Jazz, Latin, and Rock. Having said that, there are tons of great drummers out there (in Europe, Africa, India, the States, etc.), and one of my favorites is Dave Weckl, but I tell you, Larnell is trully one of the absolute best drummers in the world right now, and he is constantly getting better and better. He has at his disposal (in any song or solo situation) a full spectrum of the most "APPROPRIATE" emotion, technic, feel, and understanding of what the moment calls for. His technic, time, note accuracy, and overall feel & approach to the kit are flawless; he is top-notch and that's a strong understatement. What I however like the most about him is his humble personality and soft-spoken nature. Great human being!

    Started playing drums in 97. Always wanted a fast and accurate single pedal technique. Man how I wish there was youtube back then. I spent hundreds of dollars on books and videos but they didn’t break it all down like this video did. Had I seen a video like this 25 years ago I could only imagine what i could be doing now.
    Oh well it wasn’t meant to be for me.
    Young folks here’s a tip: never ever stop playing your instrument. Practice everyday. You’ll never know where your talent might take you.
    Lastly: learn multiple instruments. I started with drums but after a major back surgery in 07 I started playing guitar and I mastered guitar more than drumming.

    First heard John Bonham doubles and triples on bass drum in 1969. his technique was just based upon where his leg and foot fell. He was able to do it the first time he sat down at the drum kit. On some of his solos you can see him do quads, sickest foot of all time. And beats the bass drum really hard seriously beats the crap out of the drum. Absolutely frightening

    I had to learn the heel up and toe slide method when I was young because I couldn’t afford a double bass pedal.
    Try this exercise by loosening the beater side so you won’t get much bounce back, therefore building that muscle memory on your foot.
    ... and I have a size 12 foot

    Really should have shown the technique for playing 3 triplets on the foot as shown in the beginning. That can be studied if you slow the speed down to 1/2 or even slower.

    • @santi73santi
      @santi73santi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A nice tip to play triplets is playing the first note with your heel down, then you bring your heel up to play normal double strokes. I'm also shocked about this video, Larnell is my best!

    Was disappointed he didn't cover how to do triple strokes on the kick, since that's the most interesting thing he's doing - I watched the rest of the video in the hope of him explaining it but he just went straight onto some exercises.
    Watching the intro of him doing fast triples at 0.25× speed it looks like he's throwing the first kick down and lifting the front of his foot up with heel down to let the pedal bounce off the head twice before 'catching' it with the front of the foot. I could be wrong though, not sure. Would've been nice to get an explainer on in.

    2nd day practicing this exercises.
    I've started with the 3 first grooves practicing the 3 at 70bpm, 10 minutes each and resting 5 minutes between.
    I am starting slow to be sure that i'm not losing the technique while playing.
    I pretend to accelerate the tempo every 5 days.
    I'll come the 20th days to inform how i am going.

      I've been practicing this exercise since like a month and a half and i finally can play the last groove!!!!!! I'm very happy with this, i can use doubles on fills and grooves and that was my dream. I'll keep practicing to improve my control but i just want to say: thanks Larnell

      @Yeokay Hi Yeokay! What is your throne height? I think the problem can be there. The height that I use is 3 fingers (horizontal) over my ball joint and it works for me. The top of the fingers must coincide with the top of the throne.
      The idea is that when you lift your heel or feet your ball joint don't have to pass your hip line.
      Try this and ALWAYS do a little warm up before u play and rest enough between exercises. Remember, our body is much more expensive that any shellpack, cymbal or whatever.
      Take care! I'll be waiting for your replay

    I'm too broke to get a quality double bass pedal so I'm stuck with developing technique and "faking" short double pedal parts. What this video showed me was:
    1. I need to practice more and more.
    2. I probably also need to get a smoother single pedal (which I'm too broke for as well)

    • @LarnellLewisMusic
      @LarnellLewisMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      YeOldeKamikaze Hey! Thanks for checking the video out. We ALL need more practice!!!! As far as the pedal goes, yes a newer/modern pedal is helpful. However, I built my technique off of a $40 CB Percussion foot pedal because that’s all my parents could afford. A lot of what I’m doing on the pedal I can also do on the floor/ground without a pedal. I share my story with the hope to inspire you to keep shedding. I used to think Dennis Chambers was using a single pedal, and when I found out it was a double pedal, I decided to keep going with making my single work overtime. Hope this helps 🙏🏿

    I know this is an intermediate skill to have, and if you're practicing this you should already know how your equipment functions, but you also need to know how to adjust the tension on your pedal to do this effectively. It doesn't matter how fast your double kicks are if you can't get a high quality sound out of both strokes. Even here when he plays the first note lower you can still hear that the quality of both notes is very high. that has almost nothing to do with his technique, and everything to do with how much tension his pedal has.

    • @theearlofsandwich1

    • @jasonsilverio
      @jasonsilverio 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I was wondering as well. It seems off center, illusion or not. Perhaps it’s a double pedal frame and he is just using the right side of it. Might help getting more bounce by the slight bit more tension towards the edge
