This tutorial is RIGHT UP MY STREET.. im an orthotic technician and i knew EXACTLY what ya meant when ya said plasterzote. We have an abundance of plasterzote however me personally believe that a soft Poron (preferably pink(red but called pink)) would be more comfortable due to it being a sponge kind of rubber. Plasterzote has a tendancy to be quite harsh on the edges when cut. We stay WELL AWAY from using PZ with Diabetic patients so poron is the way forward with my pooch. Just thaught id let ya know. Not every day i give free hints. Awesome tutorial none the less. Thanks. I made my guitar strap using Poron and i dont even feel the weight of the guitar.
Hi, try dipping the knife in some regular water while cutting foam it act as lubricant , it helps when cutting upholstery foam, not sure for that one but worth a try ;)
It's going to sound a bit silly but for foam cutting, you may want to use an electric use a turkey carver. The blades will last far longer and save your knives while cutting foam. :)

It depends on what I am making. If I am using black/ brown/tan I make my own stain. (I have a video on stain making) but if I am using one of the coloured hides then metropolitan Leather send me some stain to match it 👍
Reason i mensioned diabetic patients is because they cannot feel sore points... and dogs cant talk so deffo pay that little bit more for pink poron. Cant be having a poorly poochie. Hope it helps.

Yes you can use a sewing machine for dog collars however hand stitching is much stronger as it is not a chain stitch like on a machine so the collar will not fall apart if one stitch breaks.

Hiya, I have a table that I made by measuring sample collars with and without padding I think it's usually about 1 inch extra, but it also depends on the thickness of your padding foam and leather. Hope that helps, Jo

Awesome! Question for you: I saw a video where someone made a padded guitar strap. Instead of doing like you did with the collar, they cut the foam much smaller than the strap, then glued the foam directly on. After that, they glued the thinner leather on top, sandwiching the foam in between, then stitched the edges around the foam instead of through it.. I am considering making some padded backpack straps and a leather shop I use suggested the other method. However, I'm skeptical that the two different thicknesses of leather won't fray or come apart outside of the stitch line. Can you give me your opinion of the other method? Have you ever done it that way? Thanks! Ron
Hey Ron, I personally prefer the way I showed in the video as the edges of the padding leather is protected a bit more. If you use the method you described I recommend using an edge paint rather than a stain as this will cover the joining of the 2 leathers better. Hope that helps

Hiya I used 3.5-4mm bridle butt for the main collar and a 0.8mm nappa hide for the padding. You can also use a thick shoulder leather for the collar if bridle butt is too expensive. Thanks Jo
Hi Mat glad you like the video 🙂. Not sure what you mean, I do a back stitches at the start and end to lock the thread in place then double hand stitch the rest. Double hand stitching and saddle stitch are the same stitching method but just different names. Does that make sense? Thanks Jo

Heya, it depends where you are based and what's available to you really. There are a few places in the UK where you can do group day courses, I offer 1:1 courses and there is Capel Manor College in Enfield that offers full time courses. I am not sure on places outside the UK I'm afraid. I use Abbey England for most of my supplies.

The padding leather is babybuck nappa from AA crack & sons and is 0.8-1mm thick. You can use thicker leather but will need to taken into account the added thickness on your foam cut out.

hello can anyone please tell me what type of padding foam that she is using? All I could hear was 6mm plasters....something something? I'm going to pick up some closed cell 1/4" foam. But I am not sure what density that I should get. Or rather how stiff I should get it. Please, hopefully someone can help me out soon so I can get the correct foam for my project. Thank you!

Does the adhesive glue you use , stinks from a mile away like most of the contact adhesives ?
Yeah it's quite a strong smell, you need to use it in a well ventilated area.

It's a nappa hide that is use. You want the leather to be about 0.8mm thick.

It's chrome tanned nappa that I use as chrome tanning gives a more flexible finish.
