  • We sample Ian Callum's first foray into big cat design in the form of the XK8 Convertible combining a Quad-Cam 4.0litre V8 motor with usual Jaguar refinements including their superb J-Gate 5-Speed auto-box. Enjoy the video here on TH-cam and read the full review at classiccarsdriv...

A nicely made video but it has an important factual inaccuracy. He says the supercharger takes a while to kick in. Wrong!! Unlike a turbo which does have a delay before "kicking in", because it works of the exhaust, a supercharger is always working, always on, always kicking in. This is because it works directly of the engine, its power is instantaneous and proportionate to the position of the accelerator pedal. The supercharger is the beating heart of the XK R, so please lets get our facts correct. Thank you.

The design of this car was primarily the work of Geoff Lawson. Ian Callum is a wonderful designer but did not contribute to the XK8 until the 2005 and 2006 MY....I have had 5 XK8 cars and my current one is a 2005 Conv and its awesome...

What has the XK8 to do with Ian Callum? The XK8 X100's design was overseen by Geoff Lawson. Keith Helfet contributed, also as to the DB7, where Ian Callum got all the merits. On the X100 Ian Callum was far away. Some might say, luckily. However I must admit the Aston Vanquish designed by Callum looks great (on the outside, interior is another matter) Also the supercharger delivers a great bit of torque in the midrange starting from around 2000 rpm, and its not kicking in.

Thanks! Is it wood or plastic inserts in interior?

Everything that looks like wood is wood
The XK came with Walnut Burr, a material that comes from the bulbous root of the Californian walnut tree as opposed to the plain material in the trunk
The root system, known as the burl, was shipped to specialist mills in Europe with the principal suppliers who converted into veneer, based in London, Milan and Valencia.
A skilled process rotary peeled the burls into veneer 0.6mm thick with each subsequent sheet kept with the preceding ones throughout production at the veneer, and subsequently at the Jaguar Veneer Shop in Browns Lane where the finished components were painstakingly constructed and finished before assembly into the vehicle.
Jaguar, Rools and Bentley were the only cars produced that constructed their own veneered components in house keeping a complete matched set in every vehicle. German and other competition outsourced the work to whoever could do it cheaper and as a result got dull looking, mismatched, poorly styled veneered components..
I know what I am talking about as I was the buyer at Jaguar responsible for the selection and purchase of the veneers for Jaguars along with a much valued colleague.

      3500 FOR A COUPE

@@madpainterken Try more like £13,500 if you want a non-supercharged coupe which isn't falling apart. For the R and convertibles it goes up from there. If you buy one for £3,500 you're just buying someone else's completely neglected mess.

We had a 2000 Jaguar XKR Supercharge (convertible) in white, and got rid of it in 2013 or so. I really miss the car; it handled and drove well and was just so nice. Sitting in it, it was hard to believe that it was a late 1990s/early 2000s car (except for some of the instruments and such). Sadly, they were incredibly unreliable, like all British cars. Ours needed thousands in repairs, and the convertible top also broke twice. At some point, oil filled up the overhead reading light and it dripped all over the center console, splashing onto the seats and instrument panels. As much of a piece of crap as it was, it was great as a car. Also, the fact that it had navigation system that was better than those included in most modern cars was yet another bonus. The tape player, albeit old technology now, was also advanced, allowing the user to listen to both sides of the tape without having to pull it out and flip it over to side two! ;-)

Your car needed 'thousands' in repairs because it was neglected and not properly serviced.

What is this? "oil filled up the overhead reading light and it dripped all over the center console"?

How and why does oil fill the overhead reading light?
