The Xiaomi Mi box 4 is a beautifully designed Android TV box. It is based on a customized version of MiUi, the company’s developed android flavor, which has some major differences to the official Android TV and we will speak about this during the video.
Unboxing experience is good! Guess the Chinese speech covered box makes it clear enough that this item is mostly intended to be used in China, just like the first version of the Mi 4 TVs which arrive with pretty much the same flavor of software embedded.
It is not an overstatement if I say that the box looks and feels great. We’ve seen fully white TV boxes already, like the Beelink A1, but Xiaomi are going a step further, bringing a white remote, HDMI and charger to keep everything in style. There are upgrades from the previous generations, and the remote controller supports voice. The technology is called Patchwall and it won an award for the best tv os in 2016. In China.
The Mi Box 4 is very slim, very simple and in the same time - aesthetically wonderful looking. I am very sorry to note there’s just a single USB port, HDMI and - surprisingly A/V output .
There’s nothing exceptional with the specs - the S905l Amlogic cpu, 2GB RAM, 8 GB ROM, Bluetooth and 4K HDR. Performance is of course outstanding.
What you will not like is the lack of 5ghz wifi and microsd expandability.
Now let’s talk software. Our primary goal is to make the interface as international as possible. Which is a tough task! To quickly do that, I am linking a small app and instructions in the description below - overall it takes no longer than a couple of minutes.
Xiaomi have limited the access to various services and that made it impossible to capture the screen from the box itself, so I was literally filming my 4k monitor. And because of the refresh rate you may notice waves from time to time.
I will be very clear about the software. This is NOT Android TV, nor it is a usable variation of pure android. You will make use of this TB box only if you will mostly run KODI and won’t care about Chinese stuff on it. Currently there is no modified international ROM, nor root, and there is no google play pre-installed, which will make you install everything from a USB or just download from the web. Having the English menu will allow you to administer most of the box features, but not everything.
Going through some tests and benchmarks we may discover some surprises.
There is basic widevine support, however having no google certification Netflix will be in SD format and not in 4K or full HD. Most of your android apps should work though. The performance of the 905l is expected to be good enough for the 2018 popular apps.
Gaming is … possible. Some games may run (if google play games is not required) - like knives out. Others just won’t. For gaming there are much more suitable solutions than the mi box 4.

Interesting news about Xiaomi and the UK. Was there any press release? I so much hope to see n international version of that one too. As for now the only international TVBox they offer is the mi box 3...

Thanks for the link! Looks like they are getting closer and closer. Yesterday I saw an article showing that their growth of smartphone business in Europe is MORE than 1000% .Not 100, 1000! :D Interesting to see what happens when they strike.

tech4all I feel like they would make a refreshing welcome to the household market and truly bringing an "Eco System" unlike other brands like apple, Samsung and LG who provide a quarter of the products households use. can't for the review for the robo vac cleaner !!

Mirroring is there. As for youtube - you may be able to run it, however it officially requires google services framework, which is not available with the box. So ... if Aptoide doesn't help, then I don't know what could be done.
There will soon be the international release of the box, hopefully the firmware will be compatible.

Nice review, absolutely when you got android box, first thing in mind is Kodi, Kodi is great, did you download kodi from the google play inside it?
On that particular one Kodi had to be downloaded independently - there is no Play Store app on the Chinese software edition :\

Get it as a separate app and install it. Likely it will only run in 480p.

Hi! Thanks for this video to help install english menu. Now I'm stuck because I don't see the app drawer you use. Is it possible that it has been removed in an update? does anybody have a workaround? the only solution I found is to launch the apk from the usb drive. I didn't find a way to copy files on local storage yet. Thanks!

Not sure about that. I prefer to use an Airmouse and used Minix A2 Lite here.

It does, but don't forget that the interface is in Chinese. You may want to check Mi Box s.

you mean for screen mirroring? I guess so - miracast is a standard protocol and it is supported too.

Not at all :( But you can use Aptoide instead. Quite good and no spying :D

Seen a few comments last weeks about international coming out, so absolutely, let's wait and see. The Mi box 3 was quite awesome :-)
How do you watch TV on this?
It has no TV tuner, if that's what you ask. You can install online TV apps:
Option 1: Kodi + plugins - plenty are available and may be quite good!
Option 2: Mobdro - a good online tv apk
Option 3: Cloud tv - also good.
If someone else would like to share good app based on experience - feel free to.
Live nettv apk is also good
Can TH-cam or play store support in it or not
It has no Play store. Perhaps it can be installed additionally.
THere will soon be international release of the box. Interesting to see whether the rom will be compatible.
As a Play Store alternative you may use Aptoide.
