Welcome to the world of Super Sentai. Fun fact, Stan Lee originally wanted to bring Sun Vulcan to America and change out the Japanese actors for American ones in 1981.

Now I want you to watch Ultraman. The last four seasons are available for free on the official YT channel, two of those even have English dubs, and there's a new season starting in a bit over a week that will also be simulcast there. And every season up to 2018 is available on BluRay, with the 2019 season releasing soon.

You should look into the Stan Lee connection! Also, shows like Makai Knight Garo and Kamen Rider franchises would be right up your ally.
Honestly, when you said react, I thought you were gonna be watching all the intros like a lot new fan have done, but I'm glad you just jumped right in.

Huh, I know TH-camrs are gravitating towards toku reactions but I never expected E Rod to be one of them. This is a welcome surprise!
Welcome to the sister show of Kamen Rider, Eric!
Premiering in 1975 and created by the Stan Lee of Manga himself Shotaro Ishinomori and then supported for three seasons after the original two by the real Stan Lee and his “man in Japan” Gene Pelc, Super Sentai is one of three big superheroes franchises in Japan.
The first, Ultraman, was indirectly responsible for the creation of the other two, as Toei scrambled to make something on TV to beat Eiji Tsuburaya’s brainchild in the ratings. After the success of Kamen Rider, a karate bugman on a cool motorcycle who beat up goose stepping cyborg terrorists, Toei wanted the genius mangaka Mr. Ishinomori to make more superheroes. It is rumored that they initially pitched a team of Kamen Riders, before moving onto a project code named Red One. Ishinomori wanted to try something different and came up with a military task force that had five operatives wearing different colored super suits that stopped a group of evil masked terrorists, thus Himitsu Sentai Gorenger was born, the first Sentai. Though the series and its follow up JAKQ were not officially “Super” or part of the franchise until Gorenger celebrated its 20th anniversary in 1995 for some weird technicality that they didn’t have giant robots. In the mid 1980s, a businessman named Haim Saban caught an episode of Bioman in TV, the then latest entry in the franchise and came up with a crazy idea to take stock footage from the show and dub and edit over it to sell to American TV. This despite some struggles, including a bizarre coincidence of Stan Lee wanting the same idea a few years earlier but failing to get it done, eventually led to the birth of Power Rangers.

The reason to Bioman being the first choice, it was because its great success in France in the 80s, so in a way Zyuranger and Bioman were the most influencial in the West.

It is interesting to think of the similarities and differences between the two franchises and how one might appeal to a certain person more than the other, or what elements each one has that the other doesn't.

    • @TeamTowers1
      @TeamTowers1 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

Indeed. I think MMPR and Zyuranger are especially a case of what might appeal to one person might not appeal to other. As Zyuranger has a lot of problems (the Ranger being incompetent and childish, the episodes often being more about kids of the week than the rangers ect), but it also does a lot of things better than MMPR and I think it all depends on how much one can tolerate the flaws of Zyuranger. Contrast to much more clear cut comparisons like say Samurai and Mega Force just being the far inferior versions of Shinkenger and Gokaiger or at the other end of the spectrum Ninja Steel being the superior one by default, because Ninniner was just plain that bad.

Hi, ERod! I remember watching you as far back as your days on Channel Awesome.
I've been a tokusatsu fan since the early 2000's. I watched a lot of older, vintage toksusatsu titles and I've kept up with everything leading to modern titles.
First of all, glad you enjoyed ZyuRanger and Bioman. It's always wonderful when the source material is drastically different than the adaption. Makes the discovery a much more rewarding experience. 🙂 And now, without spoiling ANYTHING, allow me to be your tokusatsu guide...
    ---------------------------------
I hate to be the one to tell you, but not all Super Sentai will be as rewarding as these two seasons. Some seasons are a bit vapid or comedy-focused, as you have observed with Power Rangers. Keep in mind that this is actually a strength for Super Sentai. It means they are not bound to make stories in just one tone or one style; it really allows them to keep the franchise fresh even if there are some rare missteps. Some seasons are a wild, yet wonderful experiment! (If you ever watch AbaRanger, you will not be disappointed.) And unlike Power Rangers, there really isn't a united continuity. That's more of a suggestion for crossover specials, but to be clear, it tends to be an afterthought most of the time. You don't need to watch ANY previous season to enjoy another.
That being said, if you ever find yourself disappointed with one season of Super Sentai, you have LOTS of options. There are other seasons. There is Kamen Rider (If Sentai is like the Superman of tokusatsu, then Kamen Rider is like the Batman of tokusatsu, *most of the time*). There is Ultraman, practically the national hero of Japan. There are other tokusatsu one-offs and franchises that have other audiences and story-telling directions in mind. There is a massive rabbit hole that goes from the big names in the industry, all the way down to local mascots and homemade productions. To make things easier on yourself, just stick to whatever interests you most. Official releases in the west are still few, but they are catching up. So if you don't mind hunting down some fansubs from the countless fansub groups out there, then I promise you will be in for a wonderful time.
(Oh, and if translation quality is something you value, PLEASE avoid the fansub group known as TV-Nihon or whatever name they are going by these days. There is heavily documented evidence showing that their translations are terrible; weeb-friendly at best to completely fabricated translations at worst. If you ever want tips of fansub groups to trust, I can always give you suggestions. I've been around long enough to spot the best ones.)

The recommendations for Gokaiger are because it is a better show than Megaforce.
This was a show that celebrated 35 seasons and was an extended celebration of 35 years of the franchise.
It uplifted Japan in the wake of tragedy, as it originally was going to be just a toy commercial with a few references to past Sentai heroes and One Piece, but the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami changed that as Ranger actors of the past rallied together on Twitter to give back to the fans by first giving messages of encouragement and then making cameos or guest appearances in the series to restore the smiles of Japanese people that were lost in the tragedy, especially the children who were watching.
This drastically changed the story, as the space pirates learned of the legacy of Super Sentai, the motivations of each team to be heroes and how to live up to that legacy as the 35th team.
The amount of love that went into it resonated so strongly with fans, that the season’s gimmick of Ranger Keys, which embody the power of a Ranger team, gets updated in special releases by Bandai every 5 years and the good Captain Marvelous will sometimes return in special events to make a showy appearance.

I love the Super Sentai series and have been watching concurrently since Dekaranger. Also, I have gone back to watch previous ones. I even love when the series started embracing its weird era. Don Brothers may seem weird at first, but it helped keep a decades long series fresh. Then they came back in with King Oh-ger and knocked it out of the park. It's legitimately one of my favorite sentai now and it just finished recently. Super Sentai is a hell of a series

If he does then: Always go for CSM, better quality and closer to the show props in detail. But the DX line is the affordable flagship line, especially the Super Best as it is a happy medium between the cheap base DX and quality without paying CSM premium prices. Also, Tokullectibles, Big Bad Toy Store and Entertainment Earth are your best friends that also just so happen to make your wallet cry. And the Complete Style Gigantic and Memorial Edition trinkets make avoiding the rabbit hole even harder, especially when you get things like the Sentai counterpart to the Shadow Saber from SPD.

  • @VOAN
    @VOAN 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

One thing about MMPR and Zyuranger is that MMPR didn't end after Doomsday once Cyclopsis is defeated but Zyuranger did. With no more Japanese stock footage to use for season 2 cause one Saban didn't want to use Dairanger footage yet and two they also don't want to abandon the Zyuranger suits so they had Toei film more Zyuranger suit footage to be used for MMPR in later season one and beginning of season 2. Those footage are what fans called Zyu2 footage, the thing is Japanese audience didn't get to see those Zyu2 footage until MMPR aired in Japan so episodes where Zack wored Tommy's dragon shield was never in Zyuranger but it was a Zyu2 footage used in MMPR. Many thought there's episode where Burai gave his dragon shield to Goushi but no that never happened in Zyuranger and when Burai passed away he never came back at all unlike Tommy who did came back in later MMPR episodes.

So, you finally saw Super Sentai. I've seen some series myself, though oddly, I've never been able to watch a series from beginning to end. Something always derails me. **shrug**
I can understand the younger you'd disappointment that Power Rangers Zeo didn't stop using stock footage, but to be fair, Saban was probably under license to adapt Sentai seasons and didn't want to break that, even with the profits under their belt. They _did_ start using more original footage for Mighty Morphin' seasons 2 and 3, but the increased costs didn't sit well with production. And speaking as someone who has sampled a number of Sentai series, it seems to me like most of them don't really put much effort into hiding their secret identities, even if they technically have them. I know one series that did, but that, I won't tell you about so you won't be spoiled.
And from what I remember of Zyuranger...I think Power Rangers might have handled the Green with Evil arc better. I remember thinking the PR version was more focused, though I can't remember _why._
But if you like Bioman, you might find this interesting. There's somebody on TH-cam that took the footage from Bioman and merged it together with the footage of what seems to have been the bottom of the barrel as far as Power Rangers copycats, Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters From Beverly Hills. I know, I know. I'd never heard of it, myself. But the editing job was really good. They made it look like a professionally done Power Rangers series of the 90s, complete with Fox Kids commercial bumpers.
I think it's called Star Crash, if you're curious. EDIT: Clash! Star Clash! Whoops.

  • @TeamTowers1
    @TeamTowers1 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

Actually the second and third seasons of MMPR didn't use stock footage from Zyuranger. They used a combination of fight footage they shot themselves, and footage they commissioned Toei to make for them (using the Zyuranger suits). The only stock footage they actually used was the zord fights from Dairanger and Kakuranger. Zeo, Turbo and In Space also used quite a lot of footage they shot themselves (in addition to the Sentai stock footage), because much of the stock footage didn't match up to the story they were trying to tell (in fact the finales of all three used little to no Sentai footage).

So this might make an interesting legends of fandom.
Bioman wasnt the first time super sentai was considered to be brought over here. Stan Lee was a big contender for its potential back in the 70's. After Japanese spider-man did so well, the sentai company wanted to adapt another marvel property...captain America...but would do captain japan...
Wanting a team they decided to make a show with a team of heroes from each country, even getting the rights to the marvel character ms. America. Making battle fever j. Marvel would partially produce super sentai for 3 series with stan lee hoping to bring sun vulcan to the states as its own thing around 1979-1980-ish i think...
Sounds like it may be up your ally...

Great review ERod! With Power Rangers in something of an uncertain place right now, if they do end up going with a full reboot of MMPR, they might take a few notes from Zyuranger and the Boom Studios comics for inspiration. The one big thing I do feel you omitted from your review is the story arc for Burai, the Green Ranger, and how different, and much darker, his arc was compared to Tommy's. Oh well...

    Recommended Series
*Choujin Sentai Jetman (Much darker & was one of the choices to adapt before Jurassic Park made Zyuranger the show to first adapt)
*Gosei Sentai Dairanger (Another dark series, this is what Season 2 of MMPR adapted, though not as much footage was used since Power Rangers kept the Zyuranger outfits)
*Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (The season that Season 3 of MMPR was adapted from. Same deal as Season 2 but with the Alien Rangers saga in Power Rangers they utilized the costumes that way.
*Chouriki Sentai Ohranger (The series Power Rangers Zeo is based on, again darker than what we got)
*Denji Sentai MegaRanger (the series that Power Rangers in Space was based on)

Another Ultra like series (made by the same production company) Gridman and counterpart Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad (Mostly for the Cast) plus there’s an anime sequels to that one

Since you're starting to watch Super Sentai, here some recommendations:
Choushinsei Flashman - One my top 3 favorite sentais, a beautiful story about 5 kids who were raised in another planet and came back to Earth to find their parents while trying to protect the planet from the empire who kidnaped them.
Choujin Sentai Jetman - The "X-men TAS" of Super Sentai, a series that has very mature writting, with heavly focus on the characters personal drama and complex dynamic.
Gosei Sentai Dairanger - A series about martial arts and heavly inspired by chinese mythology, with each member of the group having a serialized arc.
Gekisou Sentai Carranger - Unlike other darker and dramatic sentais, this one just a fun comedic series with alot of heart.
Denji Sentai Megaranger - If you like teenage heroes like Spider Man or Danny Phantom, than you will like this series, in which the Megarangers are teenagers and have to balance their adventures with their school life. Also the series has some elements from Tron.
Kyukyu Sentai GoGo V - Basically the Fantastic Four/Incredibles of Super Sentai, with the GoGo V being brothers who, with the help of their father, use their technology to protect the world from a family of demons.
Mirai Sentai Timeranger - A very dramatic show about a group of heroes from the future who go to the present, after a criminal, and now has to live in the time period, having adventures with many twist and emotional moments (obs: I also recommend Power Rangers Time Force, which preserve many elements from this sentai and did it better).
Mahou Sentai Magiranger - Much like GoGo V, it has the same story about a family, but with magic and fantasy elements.
Samurai Sentai Shinkenger - Great sword fights and development of characters, specially Takeru (Shinken Red) who is one the best Red Sentai Rangers.
Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger - Super Sentai + One Piece, with space pirates. However I recommend you check this after you saw the other sentais, since this is anniversary season, with many returning characters and references to past sentais.

I have no idea why youtube recommended this video to me, but since I'm here, I get to talk about Sentai; which I love doing.
Great Satan's reveal isn't exactly out of pocket once you realize Barza is a priest for Daijyuzin, whose name literally translates to Great Beast God. Yes, that's right, the mecha the Zyuranger are the very gods they worship. And that is apparent in a few scenes here and there. It is the first robot in Sentai history that is, in fact, named a God (that would become normalized later) and sentient (to this point, at least). It's a pivotal part of this series that few people seem to get or credit.
The second point is that Bandora's turning around doesn't excuse a single one of her behaviors. In fact, you'd be hardpressed to find japanese media where a bad guy gets this kind of redemption arc when an actual crime is involved (and it isn't you know, Dragon Ball or something where stakes have just left the show altogether). It would be considered a "very bad moral" specially in anything made before the 2000s to not have the bad guy either be killed off or arrested, even after a change of heart.
That being said, I'd like to turn back around a bit to some of what you said in the beginning. It is specially true that it doesn't talk down to its audience, even though some seasons do skewer a lot younger than others. It is wild that these two very old shows managed to capture you the way they did. I'm not surprised that you found qualities in them, they have plenty. But Zyuranger specifically has a hectic first episode that barely makes sense.
Sentai has had "eras", and each is very distinct from the others, though not obvious to the average bystander. I don't think most fandom agrees with this division, but I personally have observed sentai divided as such:
Era 1 is Goranger and JAKQ. Written by the original author, they are very dark, anti-authoritharian, "global" effort task forces made to deal with very bad people that were WW2 leftover stand-ins. JAKQ almost gets cancelled for being *too dark and scary*
Era 2 is Battle Fever J to Goggle V. The introduction of giant robots makes the branding of the series to change from just "Sentai" to "Super Sentai" (the Super being a common indicative of giant robot material in Japan at the time). Most tropes of everything we know from Sentai come mostly from this era. The mentor figure, the stereotypical roles, the stock footage for the giant robot, amongst other things. Toy sales are gangbusters.
Era 3 is Dynaman all the way up to the early 90s. Some scheduling issues and advertisement space make it so that episodes are in average 5 minutes shorter. The best way to describe this era is plot chunks and filler. Bulk of plot happens in episode 1 through 5, and resumes in episodes 45 - 50. With the middle being mostly filler material in the middle. It's not bad and it has exceptions, but it's some of the most tired material. Jetman great revitalizes it by injecting Soap Opera into the formula, but it's still extremely formulaic.
Era 4 starts somewhere around Timeranger and Gaoranger, but already had glimpses as far back as Gingaman. The time slot has gone back to normal 25 minute episodes; and the marketing is increasingly toy centric now. But what really makes this era shine through is the fact that the brainstorming of thematic writing is *really* strong. They really get how to write a theme through the entire series now and it shows. While it is still tropey, each season has its own flavor with their own make it or break it moments. They also have completely mastered the introduction of middle of the series addition to the teams, which sell even more times and raises the budget for subsequent series.
Era 5 starts around Gokaiger, and I must say it's one of the most interesting leaps that I don't see many people talk about. Camera quality is up and they start ditching stock footage hard. Every episode has more and more effort put into it, and episodes rarely feel filler-ish anymore. Every episode actively serves to either character growth or plot progression if not both. Toys have begun to be a bit obnoxious at this point, but it's not as bad as some people make it seem.
Era 6 started somewhat recently. I'd say somewhere between Ninninger e Zyuohger. These series completely amp up the use of digital effects and camera work. Action shots that before used a lot of stills and maybe crane shots now are intense, use drones, go-pros, single take scenes, and the action coreography just keeps up and upping itself. Though arguably aiming at the youngest it has ever, maybe since its inception, the shows still refuse to talk down to their audiences.
That being said, welcome to the fandom. Hope you enjoy your stay.

The Doctor Who comparison applies more to Kamen Rider as it shares the even more mature than Super Sentai themes (most of the time) and matches more as a franchise.
A Classic/Showa Era starting in the 60s-70s and ending in 1989 with movie(s) in the 90s retroactively considered as part of it instead of the newer era that started in the early 2000s with a transition point in recent years (off set by about the same amount as the difference in when they started).
Not to mention the greater focus on the modes of transportation (again most of the time).

The way you describe Power Rangers is very much how I view Disney's Big Hero 6. I DO like it but it feels like they just took the original comic and turned into Power Rangers Meets Teen Titans, to the point where one of the Teen Titans LITERALLY is the voice for one of them in the series. They even have the same colored outfits as Power Rangers and Fredzilla's "Mascotzilla" suit is reminiscent of the Power Rangers suit monsters.

its built around chinese mythology and martial arts
Its even better than Zyuranger and we seriously missed out on awesome footage when they ditched the suits.
Kakuranger is also great, where they got the season 3 stuff and is built around japanese mythology

I was little kid when the show premiered as well. I was already a big fan of X-Men The Animated series because the show felt much more adult and serious in tone. When I watched the premiere of Power Rangers, I thought it was the stupidest show I had ever seen! Much too goofy, and I HATED Bulk and Skull. I watched on and off waiting for the show to become less stupid. Zeo had its good moments.
The only Power Rangers incarnation that I actually enjoyed thoroughly was Power Rangers Time Force. Finally, although still cheesy in many aspects, at least didn't treat the audience like we were stupid.

12:50 it is also rumored that Saban when making Power Rangers had to decide between Zyuranger and Jetman, I hadn't heard about Bioman being a possible canidate. From what I've gathered Jetman is a highly regarded Super Sentai series for it's time.........which I can kind of understand, it's basically Super Sentai Battle for the Planet aka Gatchaman. While I admit I like Zyuranger's suits better then Bioman and Jet man I am guessing Saban just said ' F it kids like dinosaurs more then birds, let's go with this one'. IMO my favorite sentai I've watched recently was Shikenger. It's a TRAVEST on how they butchered it with Power Rangers Samurai.
