- More than 15,000 heckling Canadian fans boo their team while watching game 4 at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum. Canada plays poorly for most of the game, with 38 of 41 shots on goal stopped by Soviet goalie sensation Vladislav Tretiak. The game ends with a score of 5-3 for the Soviets and home-team fans boo Canada right off the ice. Assistant captain Phil Esposito is not taking this lightly. He skates back onto the rink, sopping with sweat, and scolds Canada.
"I'm really disappointed [with the fans]. I am completely disappointed. I cannot believe it," he says with a hangdog face. "Some of our guys are really, really down in the dumps. We know, we're trying, I mean, hell, we're doing the best we can." - กีฬา

I have always had respect for Phil Esposito and was proud he was a Bruin. This speech gave me chills. Hockey is Canada and Canada is hockey. Phil spoke from the heart. So happy they won the series.
This interview helped turn the series around although Canada did lose the next one. After that, some disheartened players left the team and the ones that stayed played fantastic the rest of the way through showing the heart of all Canadians.

If Orr was healthy and Howe, Hull, Cheevers as examples were allowed to play, the results after game 1 would have been different.

The WHA was just gaining traction in 1972. Hull, Howe, Cheevers, and Trambley had defected. Alan Eagleson did not want these players distracting attention from the NHL so he did not include them on the team. Plus the Orr injury made matters even worse.
This is equivalent to the Gettysburg speech given by Lincoln lol. A sweaty hockey player in Vancouver.

@@KMK7355 i dont know about that , bobby hull took chicago to the finals in 1971 and was 3rd in points in the playoffs . And in 1976 he was tied with 2 others for most goals in the 76 canada cup, which canada won.

i watched this game recently on You Tube. Espo played a great game. The Soviets deserved to win but Espo played great. The Soviet players all admired Phil very much. Canada also had a goal wrongfully disallowed. As for the fans booing, they got on Dryden badly with the mocking cheers when he made a save. They also booed Goldsworthy for the second penalty and Mahovolich when he pinned Tretiak for about 15 seconds . The booing of Dryden was the most obvious to me.
That's right, that's why they booed, not because they played badly, but because they played dirty! Everything is obvious! It's strange that Phil doesn't understand!

The goal by Gilbert correctly disallowed. The rule back then was that if a puck went in off an attacker's skate, it did not count, kick or no kick. We can get into 'what if' had it been allowed, but the Soviets had us whipped plain and simple.

The Soviets had played together for a decade and the Canadian team was hastily thrown together a few weeks before the first game. The Canadians basically used the first four games as a training camp but fed CCCP a great lesson in Moscow. HENDERSON HAS SCORED FOR CCCANADA

I probably would have wanted the Soviet team to win, because I love Tretiak, but I don't like how people politicize sporting events, it's not right to treat your team like that at home. Everyone learned a lot about hockey, perceptions and the media's manipulation on both sides of the cold war back in 1972. In the end it took courage, will and determination to win. I doubt there will ever be a hockey series or game to match the emotion of 1972. BTW Tretiak was amazing.

I remember watching this live as a kid. Everyone was in shock that the Canadians were on their heels at the start of that series. The good guys came back to win though!

@@poiu7777uiop Team Canada did not scout the Soviets in advance so assumed that the NHL players were far superior. Team Canada training camp during Summer '72 was like visiting a Country Club. If Alan Eagleson had spent some $$$ on European scouting, Team Canada could have studied Tretiak, Yakushev and all the top Soviet players during the '72 Winter Olympics in Sapporo (Feb. '72) as well as the '72 World Hockey Championships in Prague (April '72). Also, most of the Team Soviet players played for Central Red Army in Moscow so Eagleson could have hired scouts to study the players during the regular KHL season of '71-'72. If so, then Team Canada would have consisted of different roster containing more faster skaters from the Buffalo Sabres/Montreal Canadiens and less bodychecking. Majority of Team Canada roster were players managed by Alan Eagleson so there was most likely some financial kickback involved. '72 Series was the BEST Canada vs. Russia Hockey Series of ALL Time !

Hearing Espo say that the fans in Vancouver were yelling "Communism is better" really puts into perspective why some fans in Vancouver burnt the city after losing to the Bruins, they absolutely rabid about winning at hockey.

No doubt Esposito lead Canada in 1972. But he was frustrated in 1972, out of his comfort zone. What nobody talked about was that Esposito was not used to being the number one. That was Orr's role. If Orr had been there for Canada in 1972, we would have seen the 76 goal scorer version of Esposito lighting up the rink. Esposito clearly struggled without Orr. Following the Summit series, Espo's Bruins began the 1972-1973 NHL season horribly, 8-7-2 without Orr. When Orr returned , the Bruins were rolling again, 20-3-2 in 25 games.
Remember well watching this interview after the game. I remember the disappointment on Phil’s face and in his words. I remember thinking, you guys should be in game shape by now, why aren’t we dominating them now? My thoughts were pretty bleak as we headed for Russia. Hopeful, but not good.
You have to remember back in 72 pro hockey players drank beer all summer and did not work out. After a few games they did start to get in shape and the series turned in Canada's favour.

No Orr, not to mention the stars that jumped to the WHA, no real time to gel and off season training was almost unheard of. I know the Russians were awesome, but did they really face our countries best or the NHL's best Canadians?

People are really judging the city of Vancouver off of how international fans acted in 1972. Keep in mind this was an international games, fans from all around Canada were here, not just Vancouver. And obviously, it was 40 years ago.
What about the Vancouver riot after losing the Stanley Cup to Boston a few years ago? Much worse than booing, eh? Vancouver really didn't look too good in the eyes of hockey that time, too.
efilperpenfuhrer Vancouver is a great city. It's also surrounded by gang filled smaller cities which make up the lower mainland. 100,000 people on 1 street were drunk by 3 pm. It was a recipe for disaster really and you can bet the cops won't let it happen next time there's a huge sporting moment here.
Well, the city of Vancouver certainly had its contribution of overeager hooligans from that very city, as well as surrounding communities. Interesting how so many other NHL cities with their home fans under the same circumstances do not engage in such mindless violence and destruction. Unfortunately, the negative behavior of a team's fans, if big enough in the news, regardless of how many of them all together and how many of them from that team's home-based city vs how many from elsewhere nearby, tends to put a blight on the reputation of the fans of that team and their city in general. Outside observers tend to overgeneralize, as wrong as that is. It was also interesting to see young Canuck fans from Vancouver and surrounding places, who had no criminal past, being caught on film committing vandalism and subsequently being charged. Excessive drinking by overcrowded fans in the streets and pubs goes on in other much bigger cities while their teams battle it out in Stanley Cup finals, too, of course, and yet nothing like this.

Phil was the MVP of that series. The Russians voted Brad Park as MVP. The Soviets were always trying to gain an advantage at any point in the series. It was a hockey game, it was physical, it was political. During Team Canada's stay in Moscow, the team's treatment was the source of numerous complaints by the players. That did not happen to the Soviets when they went to Canada. When leaving Sweden, the team was informed that the players would stay at one hotel, their wives at another. The players threatened not to go, and the arrangements were changed to keep the players and wives together at the Intourist Hotel. The players' wives were fed sub-standard food and the players would smuggle some of their food to their wives. The team had contracted to have Canadian beer and steaks delivered to them in Moscow. The beer was "lost" (stolen by the Soviets) at the airport, while only half of the steaks showed up. And the fans said in Vancouver that communism was supreme? Humans are too selfish for socialism to work. Most people are smart enough to think, 'why should I work harder', and so they don't. And why work for a system that inherently allows for corruption to evolve. That is a good part of why the Soviet system collapsed. Phil was the MVP of that series.
At the time, NHL players thought they were the greatest, due to the MEDIA for 60 years. Nobody in Toronto knew about international hockey, no money in international hockey. No money. They are not cool they must suck. Everybody in the USA thought the same. These NHL players we all grew up idolizing we loved them ,but they got out skated in 1972. Hey, comeon hockey people, we got outskated, we won on dirty play. Dirty play only. The only thing that saved big NHL money bullshit was the downfall of the Soviet Union. I love NoAmerican hockey, but I can see bullshit.

Yeah here in Sweden we could not beleive what we saw with all the dirty play from the Canadians. We all thought that ther refs where on Canadas side. Made a lot of Swede cheer for the Russians.
@Joey Fortier. FIRST. In 72 Vancouver barely had an NHL team and wasn't a metropolis so the fans that were booing were Canadians, not Vancouverites. They came from around the country so basically, you're ignorant. SECOND. Vancouver today has great fans, and like every team has a some terrible ones. You need to take off your hate goggles and face the facts. Vancouver is Awesome and you know nothing about us other than what is portrayed by haters.

See, here is the difference. Noone in Soviet Union considered the series as a war. Well, maybe except for a few orthodox party members. But you could not find anything like that in Soviet newspapers or comments before the games. Despite of all "total communist propaganda" everyone was thinking of the series as of an outstanding sport event.
But it appeared that the Western propaganda did their brainwashing more successfully. And the Canadian players really took the games as a part of the war. And it's really sad.
Phil way overstated all of that and is still doing so today. First, nobody in the USA even knew that the series was being played so you can't blame the press in the USA. Second, only a fool would consider a hockey series as a war. The Canadians have consistently overstated the importance of this series because they won, albeit barely. They seem to have forgotten that they all thought they were going to win all of the games easily and have now spun it into a heroic war like effort, which it certainly was not since nobody was being shot at. Some of the behind the scenes stuff seems sneaky but it was still not a war.
The series was a big part of the Cold War of the 70's. To deny that is to not have a clue.
Thinking of this (kinda) of the women's Olympic team has been getting so much heat and might be ralling together to overcome the media/fan pressure. Canada has a press issue when it comes to sports
