Best known for his role in the smash hit television show Glee, but most devoted to his career as a writer of 15 books, Chris Colfer had a bucket list of goals at age 5. And unbelievably, he achieved everything on that bucket list as a writer and singer.
On this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Chris Colfer talks about drive and ambition, the influence of a grandmother who always believed in him and yet was his harshest critic, and how he overcame bullying from his peers and doubt from an industry that told him he would never succeed.
    SHOW NOTES:

Chris describes his childhood history of being bullied [4:35]
Chris talks about how his voice was what he was made fun of growing up [6:17]
Chris describes his drive and ambition [8:15]

Chris advocates imagination and magic as creating something out of nothing [37:42]

Chris and Tom discuss their struggles with singing and drawing [41:00]
Chris shares the impact he wants to have on the world [44:17]
    QUOTES:
“I am so not a victim any more...that I get tired of being associated with someone who is bullied, because I don’t allow that to happen any more at all.” [14:54]
“I was very lucky because I had a grandmother who just believed in me to a fault...I think that is the greatest gift you can give a child, even if you don’t think that it is possible. And many years later my grandmother told me, ‘I can’t believe you got it all done!” [24:57]
“I want to make the real world, reality, just a little bit more bearable for people. I want to bring magic to peoples’ lives.” [44:31]

I really loved when Chris Colfer started talking about adolescence and how people expect you to make adult decisions without the benefits with being an adult, I never thought of it that way and I think that the way Chris Colfer described it was really eye opening and very perfect.

    • @vishnuk1840
      @vishnuk1840 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yea true!! That's actually when you are so confused about whether you are actually an adult or a kid!! A transition phase which most parents and adults around do not care about even though they have gone through the same!! It's because they don't take the time to think about things like that! When you act like a kid they want you to be an adult and when you want to act an adult they just want you to be a kid!!

I was surprised and a bit sad that his singing voice seems to be his stumbling block. I can understand stage fright. Many of the best singers out there admit to that themselves, but his feelings about his vocals and singing is something I hope he explores more in his future. His voice is extraordinary. My favorite in Glee actually and he's a showman on stage as well. He can produce is own music w/o needing a major studio. it would probably benefit him better that way. His voice is a gift. I hope he can explore that more in the future. Even if he is still struggling to perform live, to put out music would be a gift to fans and newcomers alike. Fantastic interview!

Wow...I am so speechless. This past month I have just watched glee and feel that I am a huge fan of the characters of Kurt and Blaine and am a proud Klaine shipper. But I wanted to get deeper into the characters and the actors behind the characters so I've stayed up all night watching interviews and came across this one. I have NEVER seen such an interview such as this in my life. I am an aspiring therapist. And I almost got this sense that Tom is like a therapist and this interview was like a therapy session. Tom, as an interviewer, is so emotionally intelligent and asks such deep and intriguing questions that I have NEVER seen an interviewer ask their interviewee. Such deep, detailed, intriguing, provoking questions that gave me such a bigger glimpse into Chris's life: into his thought process, feelings, and behaviors. Chris is so self-aware and was able to answer Tom's questions with such rawness and with such honesty and self-awareness that watching the two of them together made it something so special and unique to watch. I am in awe of this interview and will watch again for sure!

Same thing, one thing that always astonishes is that he literally got into Hollywood as an innocent, baby like 18yr old boy(Kevin was 19,but atleast he was in a band). That particular range of age is so vulnerable that u can fall in any bad pit. But he managed to handle his overnight fame ,his anxiety, scared factor and managed to turn himself into what he is now- a very good looking, witty, interesting, hardworking, priceless gentleman. I have a huge respect for him

I had no idea who he was in the small opening at the start of the video, only until you introduced him did I recognize him.. Nice to hear his real story, I identify because I also was self-conscience about the sound of my voice, so much that I isolated to cope. Mr. Colfer is a superhero in my eyes.

    Great interview!
What really hit me was when he said "sometimes what doesn't kill you makes you suicidal"
I actually had to pause because that unlocked some sort of hidden memory
It's so true, and it helped me realize what everything that happened really did to me and how I can choose to change that
How I can change my path
    Thank you

@Norbert Szabó Zsolt true humans are largely judgmental pricks and often needlessly assholes. Tho thankfully in the case of Chris' voice most people actually love his voice, both speaking and singing. Tho I have seen some be dicks about it simply because he doesn't sound like a typical guy which is honestly rediculous and dumb. The uniqueness of his voice is exactly why I love it and those people who feel the need to say he can't sing simply because he doesn't sound manly enough are idiots. He can do things with his voice most people, man or woman, could only dream about. (Hehe sorry I tend to tangent about his voice😆)

@Norbert Szabó Zsolt you're right. Sadly we're all judgmental to a certain degree. I'm learning not to be & when I do have some judgmental thoughts, I just keep them to myself to avoid hurting people unnecessarily.

Listening to the way he talked about Harry Potter made me realize how much his YA book Land of Stories has done for me. Luckily I never had any kinds of reading or vision problems, but I give his book series credit for making me fall in love with fantasy. At the time I read his book (5th grade) I already enjoyed reading, if thought it was a little boring, but once I read land of stories I realized that it wasn’t the reading that I found boring, but the kinds of books I was reading. After land of stories I immediately switched to reading fantasy books and found so much joy in reading. He might have been inspired by Harry Potter, but I still don’t think he realizes how much his book series has inspired others, including me.

When we’re faced with hardships (I.e. we’re always criticized growing up), we either become desensitized to it and it doesn’t affect us anymore, or we becomes too sensitive too it and becomes a constant trigger. What I am still not clear about is what determines whether an experience makes you tougher or makes you more sensitive? I think a lot of it has to do with how you internalized these messages growing up, and natural personality tendencies play into it. Another question is how do you reverse the effect meaning when you are old enough to make a conscious choice, how do you turn the hardships into strength? The story you repeatedly tell yourself has a lot to do with it.

Tom, I loved your metaphor and would like to contribute to it
Disease do not attack you immune system. They attack your body and you immune system defends it. The disease that attacks the immune system is aids and it really takes it down
In a similar way, hard times that do not attack you psique in a way you keep your growth mindset will allow that skill to empower you to overcome
    Example: someone telling you
Being a bad writer x never being able to overcome that is a bad writer
    Amazing interview

The grasshopper and the ant is the perfect parable for saving for your retirement. When we are young, we think we have forever but we dont realize that those are the absolute MOST CRITICAL years to be saving because it doesnt matter how MUCH you save as how LONG you save for. (Due to compound interest.)
