I think that in the original movie, she was good and well-intentioned. The books mentioned here were written decades later, and essentially retcon the story to fit the narrative being given by the protagonists of the respective books. This means that in the retelling, she isn't kind and altruistic, because she was needlessly cruel in this new context (the books). Really, it makes more sense to treat the books as a sort of AU/Alternate Universe of the original film, since they are separate stories with one being loosely based off the other.
I feel that Valentino's books painted the Fairies in a more realistic light. It showed them having prejudices & made them more human. Had they done more of what they preached they wouldn't have villians in their kingdom. Was nice when Odin himself gave them their comeuppance.
I'd love to see an original Disney movie that explored the fairy academy and wish making magic. They've got in movie cannon reasons too, tween Cinderella and Wish, where there's room and interest for a movie about the fairies and could be a chance for disney to make a new concept movie that introduces new and diverse prince n princesses. Could easily make a series of films exploring how wish magic helps different people and explore how the fairies choose who to help and how it impacts the stories of the beloved characters. Could even introduce some of Serena Valentino's story elements such as the three sisters and the questionable morals of the "good" fairies and beauty biases. It'd be fun to have a kid movie that explores beauty/"goodness" biases and making amends for being closed minded as a fairy godmother. Like i can see Asha setting up the academy, maybe she could be the Nanny character. Or maybe Asha set up the academy but Nanny is a humanoid fairy that can take on dog form and was Nanny from peterpan. So much source material disney could take inspiration from and they could create a powerful new original movie that isn't an AI generated flop like wish was. So many good ideas in the movie wish but so poorly put together.

It depends of Fairy Godmother's actions since she did a poor judgment on Maleficent's early life where she and not knowing the dyer repercussions that would bring with in the future and it's true that certain fairies can be evil, but that is also depends if they're been mistreated by the way they either look or due to their own blood heritage. If someone who can see past it all and understand for where they are coming from, let's just say that karma is gonna crew somebody's own hind out and rectifying of the mistreated person's behalf😤
Just goes to show that no one is inherently good or evil. One’s actions are the ones who shape one, not looks. Unfortunately, people rarely are willing to see, much less accept this as the truth.

I saw the Valentino variant of the fairy godmother character as very akin to Karen type white women, we commonly meet irl, who want to be seen as a good person, regardless of what their morals or intentions are. She cares more about being SEEN as "good" than being actually good, which is considerably harder to do/be and requires constant ongoing self awareness and learning, most folk don't want to actually put the work in to be actually good and are happy to just been seen as good by the people around them.

Upon hearing and watching this I am amazingly not surprised that disney's fairy godmother was a hypocrite but lesser of two evils considering that as Judge Claude Frollo is also a hypocrite in his beliefs of his own self. Cinderella's step sisters could have used a fairy like Maleficent who had been put through the ringer. When they try to use Maleficent for malicious acts she would have been able to explain how moving forward and not brooding does the heart good. She would have been able to dish at the girls the same sad they spat at her likely warning their respect. It's depressing that the story went "I'm evil then? Fine I'll show you how evil I can be" If I read that story as a child I likely would have adopted the same mind set. She does no interspection nobody asks themselves why they feel or act this way or that.
