Should You Buy A Kubota BX Tractor for Your Small Farm or Homestead?

  • When we moved onto our property, the first thing I wanted to buy was a Kubota. But, did we even need a tractor?
    Eventually, we sat down and looked at the pros and cons of buying a tractor, and decided that there were 5 main reasons why a sub compact utility tractor, or SCUT, along with a selection if tractor implements, was the best choice for us.
    These are the questions you'll need to ask yourself, and the things you should consider before going out and buying or financing a small tractor for your farm or homestead.

      I bought a BX2380 back in October, primarily for snow removal, driveway maintenance, and assistance with firewood processing. I looked at green tractors also. In the end, it seemed like orange tractors were simply a more refined, smoother breed than the green ones. I really didn't want a cab, but if I had I might have looked longer at the green tractor as I thought the Kubota cab option left something to be desired. Mahindra had a very nice cab too. If I were going to do it over I would seriously look at the Korean tractors (LS, Kioti, TYM, Branson) as a value proposition. They are not as slick as the Kubota, but seem well built and an excellent value.

      Jeffrey Freeman You’re totally right. We got lucky that our local dealer is super good and happened to be a Kubota seller. If they sucked and the next closest good dealer was green or red or blue, we’d have been customers there. I’m just a little partial or orange equipment (Kubota, Ariens, Husky).

      Mine's a massey ferguson scut tlb. I was actually only looking for a tractor loader, but stumbled on this one with the backhoe at a good price. I'm glad now, I put quite a bit of use to that hoe, more than I thought I would.

    When I was weighing the pro and cons of buying a tractor, my wife's response was "Well the tractor want costs $24,000, if you mess up your back doing stuff around here $24,000 in medical bills will add up quick" ... Case closed! Next week I got my tractor! CHEERS!
    P.S. added bonus is the tractor has become my psychiatrist! :)

    My late wife and I owned our property for 8 years before we had saved enough to by a L3200. It completely changed the land ownership experience. I recently added a B2301 to my equipment and I have never regretted any purchase. Add my side by side utv to the mix and I'm able to do whatever task or project comes up. It really helps to be able to tackle any job.

      The Mindful Homestead a 1/2 ton Ford F-150 pickup does 90% of what a 250 does. Unless you are towing a fifth wheel or a horse trailer just buy a well used f150 and they are cheaper after 5 years of depreciation. Also most vehicles over 100,000 miles can be had cheap except for Toyota’s in general.

    A sub-compact was absolutely the right choice for our homestead. We have had a BX23S for about eight months and it is such a great machine. We were on our land for about a year without it. You are right that you don’t NEED a tractor on the homestead but it sure becomes invaluable when you have one. We also use our Land Pride pallet forks more than the bucket. Just picked up a GS1548 for maintaining our gravel road and it was a great investment. Great video!

      The Mindful Homestead I really wanted the lighter ones available online due to the limited lift capacity of the BX but could not justify the $1,000 price tag. I cannot access most of my yard because of that. I have added 3 inch wheel spacers and wheel weights on the rear wheels, and all the tires are loaded. If I did it again, I would just rent a skid-steer to maintain my gravel driveway. Live and learn!

    From Australia my BX23S which I love cost an arm and a leg approx $33000 however payment plan made it easy. I have 5 acres mostly scrubby bush country with clay soils and went for the BX mainly for the maneuverability of the mower which has been great but it's meant many of the jobs I want to do as in carry soil with my very limited in size 4 in 1 FEL and extremely slow and weight handicapped Backhoe and although it punches above its weight next time round I would opt for a size or two larger and get a separate mower. I find I am constantly working the BX at it's limits or beyond.

    What you say in the intro is very true, usually you don't need a tractor.
    We have been here 5 years without one, even though it would be tremendously useful. We personally chose to build infrastructure, make some improvements on the house, etc. first.
    But I cannot argue that a tractor would be a huge asset here, too! We mostly need a loader and a box scraper, personally.

      @@TheMindfulHomestead Yup, and for us a new heating system, wood chipper, chainsaw mill, log splitter and some other large expenses took precedent.... but the tractor is rising on the list again.
      My question now is whether I buy a new sub compact, or an older "full sized" workhorse (45HP Deere, Case backhoe or others I see from around town). I can get the larger used machines for less money, but realize maintenance will be far higher.

  • @Oilcruzer

    For you, this makes sense. Most people on small acreages (instead of an active homestead), would be better served getting a ZTR and a tandem wheel trailer to rent and haul other implements. We have a side by side it’s a five way blade and a receiver, and an end dump trailer that we can also attach to the Kubota ZTR.
    My neighbor takes 4x as long to cut grass with his Kubota middeck mower and sometimes 8x as long to move snow. Snow blowers come with a lot of concerns, including jamming, gravel, jamming, wind, jamming, having to throw same snow twice or more, jamming, turn radius, did I mention jamming?

    I love your videos but would like to say something in reference to running your tractor out of diesel fuel. Our newer more modern tractors do not have those old time runout of fuel problems especially when they have the modern fuel injection systems. I have a linked video from Neal at Messick's that deals with that problem and like I said. It's not like the old days. I say this but at the same time I don't plan on letting mine run out. I am much much older than you and remember the nightmares of running those old Diesels out of fuel on the Farm

Some things we buy in life works that way. You will constantly be down the road delivering, visiting, or helping a widow with free plowing. Any widow near me is free for life. I’ve made some specialty tools for digging; think smaller surface area, since no backhoe. Front lift has been a bit of a challenge. Punched up the hydraulic pressure a little. Light front attachments are important. You might want to rent something to do a one time clear.

    Potentially dumb question but when you buy one of these does it come with the mower deck and the front bucket as well or is it just the bare bones tractor and you buy the mower deck and bucket additionally?

    This might be a silly question from someone new to small tractors, but is there a favorite small gasoline tractor rather than diesel? Everything else we have runs on gas so it'd be easy to already have extra has stored. Not difficult to just get a few jugs of diesel, just wondering. Thank you!

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a bad question. Gas tractors exist, but the longevity and torque of diesel motors makes them more suited to the types of tasks tractors typically perform.

    If you don’t own a tractor then you can rent a tractor, but that’s not cheap in the long run. Otherwise your looking down the handle of a (transfer) shovel and moving material in the bed of your pickup. I’ve done quite a few landscaping projects with a shovel. You know you’ve done an honest days work when you’re done. That gets old and the tractor would save time on most every job. Shoveling and digging (working) in 100 degree heat is hard work, it’s a young man’s job. Ditto for shoveling in a snowstorm or below freezing temps.

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. The avoidance of “wear and tear” on our bodies was a big factor in going to the tractor. Not that we are afraid of a little work now and again, but sometimes you want to get the job done quickly without needing to crush Advil the next day.

    Here's the question you might be able to greatly answer ... if my property seemed somewhat similar to yours (approx. 400 foot dirt driveway -- about 12 acres with around 10 wooded) etc. -- then knowing that your description of what your "BX2380" does would also greatly satisfy at my location - but if I have to go "used" for cost and so seeing many other models ... 1) Do you know if a BX2350 would do very similar to the BX2380 without lacking anything important??? 2) And if you had quick thoughts - what about a B2230 or the "L" series?? Your thoughts here would greatly help someone who is trying to scramble to find a used Kubota while trying to know "in advance" what will best satisfy". I GREATLY appreciate your input here!!!!

      Hey Frank!
      The other BX’s should meet your needs, though their actual specs may carry slightly in terms of loader capacity and methods of connecting front mount implements. What I can say in regards to buying used is that it was cheaper for us to buy new with the 0% financing from Kubota, than it would have been to buy used at 5% apr. It’s also really nice to have that warranty should we need it. My advice would be to think hard about taking the money you were planning to use to buy a used machine, and use it as a down payment on a new one. The ease of loader attachment, options for front mount implements, and other modern features on the 80 series are worth it in my opinion.
      Bigger tractors are always nice if they fall in the budget. For us, it was bigger tractor, or front mount blower. We went with the blower.

    Heck yeah, you need a tractor. You buy a place so you can justify a tractor! Buy an old one for a reasonable price. They don't lose value - inflation hedge! And, for a known brand, you can still get parts even for 50+ year old tractors.

    You don't even need a homestead to benefit from a tractor. Even on half an acre you can do so many outdoor projects without hurting yourself. Install a pool. Dig drainage trenches. Trenches for electrical. Mulch, raised beds. etc etc

    Man easily justifies what he wants to. For many owning a compact or subcompact is like owning a boat or a camper or a motorcycle. Something that never gets discussed are the real long term requirements of a tractor. All I see are the green and orange ones and how great they are. Talk about features. How much plastic on them? Simple things like cruise control or bucket level indicator. Resale only counts when you care about resale. I don't plan to sell mine so I don't care. Almost all of these stories are about non commercial use. The green ones get built by different companies every few years.

    I really really really want this awesome toy. The problem is I am no Bill Gates, so I have to justify it financially, and no matter how I look at it I can’t. With 0% 84 months financing a $30,000 tractor with basic implements would cost $357 per month. That’s every single month for seven years! I might need to move some compost or wood chips once a year, do some digging and grading once every few years, etc. If I hire a professional with a big tractor every time I need and pay $100 an hour, I can’t imagine spending more than a $1,000 a year. That’s less than a quarter of the cost of owning it. And that assumes me hiring a professional ten times every year, which is not going to happen. The only reason to own a tractor like this is the same reason people own speed boats, sports cars, snowmobiles and the like. It is a very expensive toy to be enjoyed by those who can and nothing more. Please convince me I’m wrong.

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We used it to drag out out our pigs after slaughter. We hang them from the loader when processing them. We will make around $5000 from pigs this year.
      We use it to snowblow our driveway. When someone else plowed, it was $55 a pass with some storms requiring 3-4 passes. Then when the driveway gets too narrow, we needed to call in a loader to push back the banks. That was around $2-300 a visit, depending on how big the banks were. We were spending upwards of $4000 a year on snow removal alone.
      And we don't need a lawnmower. This does that.
      And we don't need to pay for firewood, because we can use this to haul logs out of the woods.
      There is something to be said for not being at the beck and call of someone else. We don't need to hire anyone. If I want to move a compost pile, I move a compost pile. If I want to build a road or path, I build a road or path.
      You can go through analysis paralysis, or you can get to work. We chose to get to work.

    • @differenthandyman938
      @differenthandyman938 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our situation is different. I do all my snow removal with my $500 walk behind blower. It only takes a few minutes as we don’t have a long driveway. Our pigs come from the supermarket in 2lb pieces wrapped in plastic. We manage to haul them by hand. It sounds like in your situation it really does make sense. And you are making a very good point regarding not being dependent on anyone else. Especially in our area where a typical response when you call a contractor is “call me again in a couple of weeks”. Thanks for the response.

      Yes and no. The tractor, if properly maintained, should last far beyond 7 years and holds its resale value extremely well, far better than a car. Like everything else, if you actually use it regularly, then chances are better of it being a good buy.

    • @chrisinwood9041
      @chrisinwood9041 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      $4000 is an insane amount to spend on snow clearing! We get snow from October to April. Usually a dozen or so snow events with anywhere from 3-6 being over 10” and every 10 years up to 30”. Normal cost in the city are around $500 and you can triple that in the country. But if it’s just being plowed( as opposed to snowblowed) It doesn’t cost too much.
      Our 3 km cottage road costs about $80-100 a shot.
