A Brief Comparison of Mormonism and Christianity (with Allen Parr)

  • This is one of several clips I will be uploading from a collab I did with Allen Parr evaluating a few different religious groups in light of biblical Christianity. Subscribe to my channel to get notified when the other videos in this series go up.
We are using the word “cult” here in the popular negative sense that Christian theology uses; to indicate a religion which imitates Christianity but is not genuinely Christian. The term also has another technical meaning; referring to any religion that has rituals associated with it. That’s not the definition we intend in this video.
If you enjoyed this you will probably enjoy a lot of the content that Allen Parr has. Here is his channel, I recommend you check it out. / @thebeatagp

As an ex-Mormon, focus on the deity of Jesus. Compare and contrast the Mormon Jesus to the Biblical Jesus. My Christian high school friends kept presenting the real Jesus to me, especially this one persistent guy who ended up dying in a car crash not too long after high school. How sweet that he’s with the Lord and I get to see him again one day.

As an ex-Mormon, born again Christian who does outreach to the LDS, if there is one suggestion I would give to Christians in their witnessing to them, is to study the Bible. Having a solid understanding about what we believe and why, being able to go to the text and retain its context, during interactions, will be essential to point them to the Cross. A lot of proof texting of the Bible happens in the cults.
Doing it in love and grace is definitely, the way to reach them, and to honor the One we serve. ❤️✝️

@@joshhopper5551 Great question! There are many, and also many topics where Mormon theology differ from Christianity, but the most important thing is to focus on the nature of God, who the Father is, who Christ is in the Bible. As Dr. Walter Martin used to say, if we get who God is wrong, nothing else we get right will matter much for eternity. So, as many passages in the Bible we study about that, it will be very helpful. And then also, learning a bit more in depth, what LDS theology teaches about the Godhead, and what are the biblical passages that are used out of context to try and justify that.
In my own videos, that’s what I always aim to do, I break down an specific LDS teaching and then I contrast it with the Bible to show why and how it contradicts it. You are welcome to check them out.
A few verses on the nature of God:
LDS teach that the Father’s name is Elohim, and Jesus’s is Jehovah…
(If the Father was a man, can Scripture say that of Him)
      Isaiah 40:9-28, 43:10-11, 44:6-8, 44:24b, 45:5, 21
Deuteronomy 4:35,39 The Lord (Jehovah) He is God (Elohim)
Hope it helps! That’s a lot to fit in a single reply.😀

      @KnuttyEntertainment 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

They got a lot wrong, probably more than half of what they talked about. I actually went and rewatched the video to try and catch any I missed.
The whole thing about Joseph writing himself into Genesis 50 is wrong (I’ll have to go into more detail on this one, it’s more complicated.)
We do not believe that Jesus is a created being, we believe He is co-eternal with the Father.
We believe that Jesus is God, they said we put Jesus closer to the level of Lucifer, that’s wrong.
We don’t teach that Jesus is a married man, some will theorize about that, but then again, so will many other mainstream Christians.
We don’t believe in salvation by works, they took that verse in 2 Nephi completely out of context. (Almost every Protestant street preacher will try and twist this verse when confronting Latter-Day Saints.) Also, Nephi isn’t pronounced “neffy” it’s pronounced “knee-fi” like “defy” but with an N.
Lastly, the whole thing about changing the name from mormon to LDS isn’t at all what they said. The name of the church has always been “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” mormon is a nick name derived from the Book of Mormon, whose author was an ancient prophet named Mormon. The nickname mormon gives people the wrong impression. We want to make it clear that not only do we worship Jesus and only Jesus, but that we’re the complete restored Church of Jesus Christ. The same church that existed among the early Christians. It’s not about de-emphasizing the Book of Mormon. We’ll stand by it until our dying day.
The whole thing about the section added into Genesis is about an ancient Jewish prophecy given by Joseph of Egypt. Long story short, the Book of Mormon talks about an extended record of the Old Testament that existed in Jerusalem in 600 BC that was engraved on brass plates and contained the teachings of prophets and prophecies that had been lost by the time the Bible was being compiled. Critics will say the prophets mentioned on the brass plates didn’t exist, but we’ve been proven correct by statements in the books of Enoch and the Dead Sea scrolls, as well as other obscure materials. Anyhoo, one of these prophecies that is mentioned in the Book of Mormon but is mostly lost in the Bible is the prophecy of the Messiah Ben Joseph, a prophecy given by Joseph of Egypt. Only references to this prophecy’s existence can be found in the Bible, but some semblance of it still persists in some Jewish records, and a Rabbi will mention it every once in awhile. Joseph Smith had the prophecy revealed to him after translating the related passages in the Book of Mormon. So he added it at the back of Genesis in order to place the prophecy back into its original context. Joseph Smith didn’t just make it up to put himself in the Bible, it’s an actual prophecy that Joseph Smith restored by the gift and power of God, and has been vindicated in recent years by new discoveries.

BIBLE SCRIPTURES THAT DESCRIBES THE FALSE PROPHETS AND THE SECTS AND CUSTOMS AGAINST THE PRIMITIVE CHURCH AND TRUE DOCTRINES THAT CHRIST LEFT
      there is no other gospel
      Galatians 1:8-1
6 I am amazed that so soon you have turned away from the one who called you by the grace of Christ, to follow a different gospel. 7 Not that there is another, but that there are some who disturb you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But if even we, or an angel from heaven, announce to you another gospel different from the one that we have announced to you, let it be anathema. 9 As we have said before, I repeat it now: If anyone preaches to you a different gospel from the one you received, let him be anathema.
      Matthew 7:15-20
Beware of false prophets; they approach in sheep's clothing, but inside they are ravenous wolves. By their fruits you will know them. Let's see, do you harvest grapes from brambles or figs from thistles? Healthy trees bear good fruit; damaged trees bear bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a damaged tree bear good fruit. The tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. That is, you will know them by their fruits."
      Revelation 22:18-19
18I testify to all who hear the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to them, God will bring upon him the plagues that are written in this book; 19And if anyone removes from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will remove his part from the tree of life and from the holy city described in this book.
      Deuteronomy 4:2
You shall not add anything to the word that I command you, nor take anything away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
      Revelation 22:7
Behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.
      Proverbs 30:6
Do not add to his words, lest the tea rebuke and you be found a liar.
      ECCLESIASTIC 23:17 DHHED
The one who surrenders to sexual passion, which burns like fire and will not go out until it is consumed. The womanizing man will not be satisfied until the fire devours him. The womanizer man seems good any bread, and he will not stop until he dies.
      Exodus 20:14
14 You shall not commit adultery.
      Ephesians 5:6
Let no one deceive you with vain words, because because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the children of disobedience.
      Timothy 6:20-21
O Timothy, keep what has been entrusted to you, and avoid empty {and} profane talk, and the objections of what is falsely called science, which some profess it, have strayed from the faith. May the grace be with you.
      2 Peter 2:2
      Many will follow his sensuality, and because of them the path of truth will be blasphemed;
      2 Peter 2:18-19
Well, speaking with arrogance and vanity, they seduce by carnal desires, by sensuality, those who recently escaped from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves to corruption, for one is a slave to that which has defeated him.
      John 4:1-5
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not of God; and this is the {spirit} of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and that now it is already in the world. Read more. My children, you are of God and you have overcome them, because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world; that is why they speak on behalf of the world, and the world hears them.
      1 Timothy 4:1-2
But the Spirit clearly says that in recent times some will apostatize from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, through the hypocrisy of liars who have seared their consciences.
      2 Corinthians 11:3-4
But I fear that, just as the serpent with its cunning deceived Eve, your minds may be diverted from the simplicity and purity {of devotion} to Christ. Because if someone comes and preaches another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit, which you have not received, or {accept} a different gospel, which you have not accepted, well tolerate it.
      Hebrews 4:12
Because the word of God has life and power. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, and penetrates to the depths of the soul and spirit, to the most intimate part of the person; and puts the thoughts and intentions of the heart on trial.
This scriptures of the holy Bible is telling us that he is not s prophet of God and in Galatians 1:8
8 But if even we, or an angel from heaven, announce to you another gospel different from the one that we have announced to you, let it be anathema. 9 As we have said before, I repeat it now: If anyone preaches to you a different gospel from the one you received, let him be anathema.

I always think of John Steinbeck’s novel, The Pearl, when I hear this tenet. A Mexican pearl diver finds a large pearl that temporarily changed his status. Catholicism at that time believed that people were born into a caste system and could not elevate their status. The story has much more stuff but that is what I was taught about the historical significance. I would think, “Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket,” would apply as well. It was definitely about greed, avarice, coveting, envy, racism, elitism, and selfishness.

But the social implications apply to today and it brings it to mind every time I see or hear of the Mormon tenet The Pearl of Great Price. But what is not mentioned when John Steinbeck’s Pearl is described in today’s liberal description is any reference to Biblical sources. They talk about folklore in Mexico not Matthew 13. I have always linked this novella with the Bible. I have no idea what Steinbeck had in mind, but the United States in the 1940s was saturated with Biblical ideology and stories. Any educated person would have had at least some knowledge of Jesus’ parables and this work is widely considered a parable. It is a very troubling story like all of his work. So the hardships portrayed stay with you. Full of struggles and loss. Unlike his works, Jesus always gives us hope.

      Timothy 6:20-21

      2 Peter 2:2
      Many will follow his sensuality, and because of them the path of truth will be blasphemed;

I have been to many Mormon services, including a baptism of an 8 yr old girl, a wedding and a funeral of a beloved father. Even though I don't believe or follow their practices as a Christian, I attended when invited and presented as the families wished without breaking my own faith. That's just respectful in my opinion. I've presented the truth to them and they always argue, but I can walk away from those interactions knowing that I planted a seed.

I remember it was Matt Chandler who made the love for the true biblical Jesus simple: when he started describing his love for his wife and then describing her attributes like her brunette hair (when in reality his wife is blonde!) It was a perfect example of how someone so wrong NEEDS correction-from someone who can clearly see and have the patience and intent to get him to see the reality clearly too.
If someone professes belief in Christ, we should love them enough to rebuke their false belief or distorted unbiblical conclusions by using the “Colombo tactic” to help and guide them toward the truth.
But you can’t force the horse to drink the water when you’ve done the work to lead it to the water: so *that’s* when I think it’s appropriate to call them a heretic-when they are KNOWINGLY twisting scripture and leading sheep astray.

God did not create Jesus. There are other illogical parts of that thought process, but the critically unbiblical thing is the claim that God created Jesus.
John 1-- "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (in the original Greek, the order is switched for emphasis: God was the Word). He was in the beginning with God... All things were made through him [the Word], and without him was not anything made that has been made... And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us..."
That last part makes it pretty clear that "the Word" is Jesus. Coupling that fact with the rest of the passage, it's pretty clear that Jesus existed before anything was created, and was responsible for creating everything.

      How did it go?
This is typically how families join the LDS faith. They see the marriages, children, work ethic, and general happiness and blessings in those families lives and eventually source it back to the covenants those people have made with God through the priesthood and Temple.
These types of YT discussions are always focused on doctrines and beliefs, which is fine... but they miss the most important unseen aspect of the Gospel of Jesus Christ... how it can bless the lives of those who walk the covenant path.
This isn't directed at you per se' - you seem very kind and sincere - but anyone im the thread trying to witness to their wayward Pseudo Christian Mormon friends
There is no faithful LDS person who would trade places with Allen or Mike. If you share the gospel of your local church (and try to convert them as our neighbors from Apologia Studios? did aggressively to us) then make sure you answer the most important question. How will it improve their lives now and in eternity?
They will be giving up eternal marriage, eternal families, & exaltation to exist in the presence of Jesus Christ and The Father and be ONE with them as Jesus pleaded in John 17.
To have blessings of wisdom, health, spiritual power Android protection for living the commandments, and to participate in building up the kingdom of God in the last days - the kingdom Daniel saw which shall never be destroyed.
If you can talk them out of giving all of this up the offering most be pretty good.
I would recommend keeping an open mind. These videos and those that buy into the Mormoms aren't real Christians narrative should remember Christ persuaded relatively few disciples during his ministry. The same thing that would happen if He came back today.

His response? “Oh we speak in tongues as well!” Bro…are you even trying? Anywho, the fact that they consider the Bible practically last, should be a major red flag. We believe that we are saved by grace through faith but that faith isn't just professed belief and is also expressed in our behavior and/or works (Matthew 7:21-23, James 2:14-26, Isaiah 29:13). Or put simply, works are outward manifestations of faith in Christ however those works are not what saves us (Ephesians 2:10).

@@KnuttyEntertainment Expand, what do they get wrong?

    • @KnuttyEntertainment
      @KnuttyEntertainment 2 ปีที่แล้ว

However, these claims are backed up by statements in the books of Enoch and the Dead Sea scrolls. One of these prophecies that is mentioned in the Book of Mormon but is mostly lost in the Bible is the prophecy of the Messiah Ben Joseph, a prophecy given by Joseph of Egypt.

I had high hopes, after watching some of your other video’s, that you would do a good job of presenting the information in a less biased and more informed way - that way I felt good about watching your videos on other faiths. It started out good but there are some issues that crept in and you lost credibility [meaning I won’t be watching those other videos]. I will try and briefly share some of those issue, not to convert, but so you can better teach. 1st, remember that the teachings of the bible in those faiths you identify as Christian are base on man’s interpretation - none claim to have a prophet. Therefore, your interpretations of the bible are more open to error [which, if you don’t believe that “Mormons” are led by a true prophet puts the “Mormon” interpretation on equal grounds of validity] Remember, the 2 oldest copies of the Bible are not exactly the same. 2nd, using a person who has left a faith as justification for the truth of your faith is always dangerous - unless you can show that no person has left your faith and joined the “Mormon” faith. It really doesn’t help in teaching about a faith you don’t belong to. 3rd, I give you credit for trying to back up some of your points with references [FYI, Nephi is pronounced “knee - fi” - shows “Mormons” that you are at least partially educated on the faith; not a big deal, but it makes you look more credible], but you fall into a trap when you do not give historical context. Having studied the New Testament in at a secular college, there are many Old & New Testament scriptures that contradict each other and current Evangelical teachings [especially if taken out of context]. 4th, and this is one of the areas where a lot of credit is lost, you state that you must read the New Testament, not picking and choosing versus, to prove that “Mormonism” is wrong. The issue is you just spent a few minutes “picking and choosing” versus out of the Doctrine and Covenants and Book of Mormon, but do not encourage anyone to read either of those books. It appears, to someone outside of your faith, as a little disingenuous [like you are hiding something]. And 5th, please get the history right of the faith you are teaching on. If you don’t get that right, then how am I, or others, to trust your other points. The official name of the “Mormon” church, as of April 26, 1838, is “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” [D&C 115:4]. The name “Mormon” was a derogatory name persecutors used to identify members of the faith. Much later, the member’s and the church used it as a means of assisting non-members to know who was sharing the message, but the term “Mormon” was never created by the church. Sorry for how long the post is.

@@kneesflorists5860 I'm not sure I understand your comment as a presentation on a religion’s beliefs is theological in nature. I agree that it is nice that it is a short clip and that it should be a high level review.
My issue is two-fold: how a non-believer should present information on another faith and being a credible presenter of another faith’s beliefs.

Presentation - if you are going to teach about another faith, you should limit all comments related to the validity of the faith’s belief. You can state things like “this is not what I believe” or “this is different from what my/our faith believes” as those are opinions and point out a difference. Stating such things like “that isn’t what the bible teaches” is a statement of fact that must be supported by credible primary sources. Those sources must be more credible than any sources the other faith can use. Since the presenters of this video belong to faiths that do not believe in on-going revelation, they would not be able to present a more credible primary source [a primary source is one that either both or, at a minimum, the other side would believe]. Interpretation of a scripture is an opinion if there is nothing more definitive from the author / writer to support the interpretation [ think of it like going to trial].
Credibility - if you are presenting information on another faith, you need to show that you can be trusted to present the truth - or at least the truth to the best of your ability. The more you can show you have “done your homework” the more you can be believed. In this presentation, the announcer mis-pronounced one of the names in the Book of Mormon, as stated it isn’t a big thing, but it raises the question of whether you did your homework. The big issue came with the presenters stating the “Mormon” faith was changing its name. That is factually not true [hence the citation provided in the original post]. Getting information like the name of the faith wrong is a sure sign that the presenters did not do their homework - or that the source information used is incorrect. It would be like a presenter of your faith stating your faith was originally called "the Anti-Christ church of Satan" but then changed it to "[whatever your church is called]". Would you believe any other information that presenter presented? Without credibility, how can I, or anyone else, really believe any of the other information provided by either presenter.
I have enjoyed some of Mike’s other video’s and was looking forward to seeing his take on other faiths, but after getting the actual name of the “Mormon” church wrong [and without making some correction to the video] I don’t know how much I can trust his videos.

With their missionaries, who are usually extremely young, I try to use questions.
With them, it seems best to remain in "student" mode so that they don't run away so quickly and shut-down any conversation about the biblical gospel. When they try to change the subject, as a "student" you can ask them to go back to your strategic question instead of moving on to go down some other unrelated rabbit hole. Questions can center on the message of the gospel. I ask a lot about Ephesians 2:8-10 as compared to their very similar sounding 2 Nephi 25:23 in their Book of Mormon. They two do not match up. 1 Corinthians 15 is another good source for seed-planting questions to ask missionaries about. Grace to you!

    • @galiantus1354
      @galiantus1354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

As a returned LDS missionary, here is my view:
I don't see Ephesians as being in conflict with 2 Nephi conflict because of the definition of faith. Faith is "a complete trust in something or someone". So faith in Christ is complete trust in Christ. It is more than just a belief that He exists and can save you. It is that, COMBINED with a belief in and willingness to follow what He says. Remember, Christ said in Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingodom of heaven; but he who doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." If all that is necessary is a simple belief Christ can save you, Christ would have no need to differentiate between talk and action - anyone with enough energy to call "Lord, Lord" obviously believes Christ can save them.
Since I'm aware some people believe Christ's pre-resurrection words don't apply to them, I'd also like to take a look at James 2:19: "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." So again, belief isn't everything. It is a start, but not a complete picture of salvation. Devils can't be saved because they don't trust Christ, and actively rebel against Him.
A Christian is someone who follows Christ. Now of course, we are flawed humans, and for us following Christ might end up being an intermittent, incomplete thing. But that doesn't matter, because Christ's grace allows Him to open the way for us to follow. So as long as we follow Christ, we can be saved.

    • @galiantus1354
      @galiantus1354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Heather Gillette I respectfully disagree. We do have complete trust in Jesus Christ, and we believe it is only by and through Him we are saved. The ordinances you mention operate on His power. They are not our own power. This is why they are administered in His name, not the names of men.
      - The Christ from the Bible is the Christ we love and follow.
      - Our belief that children and heirs of God can indeed inherit "all the Father hath" does not imply we believe in multiple gods. God our Father is the only god we worship.
      - If you believe "that doesn't mean they can do anything they want", I think we are in more agreement than you are accounting for.

Great question. The final authority is God, however the existence of several religions is proof that is hard for us to agree on what that means.
Since a prophet is a spokesperson of God, I'd say that makes them the next best thing. From the Mormon perspective, the Holy Bible and Book of Mormon are both collections of books written by prophets, and we also believe that prophets still exist, specifically the current leader of our church. Prophets are people though, thus not infallible, as best as they want to emulate Christ. Because prophets teach current and future generations, but speak through the lens of their current culture and mortal biases, it *could* be argued that the ultimate authority of our religion is the most current leader, so neither of the writs.
However, I would argue that if a person is willing to do due diligence in their study of the Word from all prophets available, and seeking with guidance of the Holy Spirit, that they will see that there is no need for one ultimate authority to trump the others because they all teach the same things. The more you sincerely seek to know the Savior, you will see through 'contradictions' that naturally occur when you have imperfect people lead us to a perfect God, even if they were called by Him.
As a TL;DR, there isn't one authority. The more the merrier, as each will compliment or provide more context that help you to understand Him, assuming the ultimate source of it is God. And if you don't know its' source, you can ask God if it is, as long as you seek the answer from the Spirit and not from man's wisdom.

    • @TiaKaberuka
      @TiaKaberuka 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

The Bible says that if someone comes along claiming to be a prophet but they contradict what God has already revealed before, then they are not from him.
According to Joseph smith, “We have imagined and supposed that God has been God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil that you may see.”
But according to God thousands of years earlier, ““You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.”
      ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭43‬:‭10‬ ‭
So, I know there are many religions but what matters is what God has already revealed about Himself. And if anyone says otherwise, it’s not wise to listen to them.
Hope you consider this, my friend.

I too was convinced, served a mission, did all that I needed to do in the temple etc. read my words it’s all false. The true Christ is not found there, the Christ of the Bible is the true Christ. Now you Mormons say we believe in the Christ of the Bible, I said the same thing… but read my words! It is not the same Christ! I've had numerous extended interactions with LDS missionaries. It's painful to get them to admit they believe anything controversial. They always speak in really ambiguous ways and try to sound like normal Christianity plus a few bonus doctrines.
Only once did the missionary admit he believed different doctrines from me. In that event, he just argued that Christianity was too ambiguous on what God is really like and the LDS had answers. I didn't know what to say because he sounded so obviously wrong. (You're church tells you things but you don't know if they are true) Anyway, an older me is more prone to point out obvious flaws in what someone else says.
Nowadays I still tell them that I want to talk to them. But I also make it clear that I want to convert them. At that point they just nicely say goodbye.

@Heather Gillette this video is claiming I belong to a cult simply because my beliefs of Jesus Christ differ from their interpretation of the bible. I belong to it because of the spiritual experiences I've had, and the evidences I've found of having the attributes of Christ's original church.
I struggle with the BITE model because of this:
One can argue all religion control behavior to some degree.
Living off faith is a necessity so control of information can be argued as well.
Jesus does tell us to control our thoughts.
Emotion can be argued as well because we feel guilt when we sin and is important for repentance.
I don't think christianity is a cult (obivously because I am one).
I think cult is not a light term to throw around because it can put well meaning and intentioned people in the same category as Jim Jones & Charles Manson.
At the end, I do think it's important to be aware of cult characteristics to keep yourself safe, but don't just throw that word around unless you know

If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things."
I wasn't trying to misrepresent but just keep it concise. Joseph Smith tributes what Paul says and says this is something we strongly believe in.

We believe the Bible is the word of God, New and Old testament, and we believe the Book of Mormon (BOM), as well as Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price are all in that category, we do not believe any of them "supersede" the others. Some people have subjective favorites (for example my favorite book of scripture is the new testament), but none invalidates the other. Thus is why we refer to the BOM as another testament of Jesus Christ.

There was no Christ that was “developed over 2,000 years”. Read the Gospels and the writings of every church father that followed. Ignatius, Clement, Polycarp, Tatian, Justin Martyr, Theophilus, Tertullian, Patrick, and on and on. From the Apostles through their direct disciples, through their disciples and on through the centuries until now, Jesus never “developed”. He’s the same now as he was then, the eternal God in human form. He was never created. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have been eternally God. Church history and the Gospels prove this. There is no ambiguity. But 1,800 years after Christ two men appear and change the story. Joseph Smith claimed God was not eternally God and was once a man who lived on a planet and “became” a God and starts the Mormon religion. Charles Taze Russel is the second man. He claims Jesus is the Arch Angel Michael and starts the Jehovah’s Witness Organization. These two religions separated themselves from the real Christ and made up their own versions.

Hey Allen and Mike! I am working as a church planter in Utah and engage regularly with LDS members on a spectrum from inactive to missionaries. I hope I can provide some insight. As evangelicals, we hold a high view of orthodox theology with our authority as God's Word, the Bible. LDS don't necessarily do the same even with their own scriptures, but rather hold a high view of allegiance (to the prophet, the church, the family, etc.) and orthopraxy (following all the right commands). Their own scriptures are rarely preached in their sacrament meetings. While their scriptural authorities are those four works you mention, their real divine authority is the word of the prophet and other church leaders.
I'd totally agree with the suggestion for how to share the Gospel with LDS! Even though they don't fully trust the Bible, the New Testament (specifically Jesus's words) is saturated with the Gospel. The more they hear and meditate on Jesus's words, the more they'll see the distinction from their beliefs.

Hi Daniel, a lot of what you said is inaccurate regarding where we get authority as we understand it as well as our scriptural usage. When you mention authority to a Latter-day Saint we understand that as priesthood authority which we receive from someone worthy to ordain another. Our priesthood lineage can be traced back to Joseph Smith who received the Aaronic priesthood from John the Baptist and the Melchizedek from Peter, James, and John as you likely know. They all received theirs ultimately from Christ. We don’t receive any authority to preach or administer ordinances by just reading the Scriptures. Those who desire to serve God can do so at any time and are commanded to do so, but to do anything requiring priesthood authority requires they first receive it from someone who can ordain them. The house of the Lord is a house of order.
As for quoting scriptures, I have no idea where you got that from. It’s the first I’ve heard of it. Just this past Sunday in sacrament meeting I heard verses from the Bible and from the Triple Combination being used. I was struggling with my three year old at the time so I couldn’t tell you exactly which ones they were unfortunately. A few weeks ago when I gave my talk I used verses primarily from the Old Testament and summarized a story in the Book of Mormon.
You’re familiar with General Conference, when was the last time you listened to a session? I challenge you to listen to this latest one and see how often scripture is quoted.

Speaking for myself, I do not see 2 Nephi 25:23 which states "it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do" as a contradiction to Ephesians 2:8 which states "For by grace are ye saved through faith". Faith is not only a belief, but a belief that moves one to action- as stated in both James 2:17 and 20 which says "faith without works is dead". The work alone doesn't save us but only proves our faith which then in turn makes us worthy to receive that grace.

“After all we can do” suggests that we aren’t saved if we don’t do all we can. In other words, our works don’t just demonstrate our salvation, but participate in our salvation. We run as far as we can, and then God’s grace takes care of the rest. This is not biblically sound teaching.

When we have that kind of faith, Jesus Christ can judge and say something like, "Ok, because you have shown your faith (by keeping the commandments with all your might), you can have my grace."
