All you need is some good pals, some good drinks and some bowling! What a wild movie haha!
Thank you all for the support and the movie suggestions!
Shoutout to the Big Lebowski bar in Iceland 🇮🇸🥛
I don't know if I ever wrote this, but, Mrs. Schmitt looks like Dora, the Explorer grew up to marry a gringo.
Can you put the movie “Paul” on your next comedy poll?
It’s Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Seth Rogan as an Alien. It’s pretty funny.
Great movie.
I love how Philip Seymour Hoffman manages to avoid being typecast. He can be a stoner adrenaline junkie (Twister), a toadie (here in Tye Big Lebowski), or a suspect priest (Doubt), and he just 100% delivers and embodies the part.
My favourite role of his is as Andy in Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead. That was an incredible performance in a sea of incredible performances in an incredible movie. If you guys haven’t seen that one, do yourselves a favour. You won’t regret it.

It definitely did!
There's kind of in interesting subtext there too - the rug ties the crazy movie together too!

Needless to say, this is a movie that does not suffer from being viewed multiple times :-)

Corn Pone Flicks coitus?
also, Raising Arizona
I would say you need to watch it multiple times to figure out what the heck is
going on ! Great film, the Coens never disappoint.
I still laugh just as hard as the first time I seen it I absolutely love this movie
One of my favorite little fun facts about this movie is that Steve Buscemi was in the Coen Brothers' previous movie, Fargo, and he played a character who was basically an impulsive talker... so when Buscemi returned for this role, the Coens decided he should play a character who constantly gets told to "shut the fuck up".
And he says, "in & out" in both roles. Coens' films all interconnect and give me deja vu.
@@rg3388 And almost all their movies is about people in pursuit of a big stack of money and how greed never pays off.
@@tremorsfan He dies in Miller's Crossing (off screen) and we don't see the body (but it's referred to) -- I don't think he dies in Barton Fink, though.
@@tremorsfan I've seen HP twice, but other than "a nice double stitch" and "you know, for kids" I really don't remember it at all.
I really should watch it again.
@@donkfail1 You're right. It never pays off but the ride is hilarious.
Best description of this film I've ever heard: It's like watching a plot do everything it can to matter to a protagonist who just can't be bothered.
It's like that episode of SOUTH PARK where the kids try to find their Okama GameSphere and instead stumble upon a global conspiracy but couldn't care less about the complex plot because they just want to play video games.
The Dude abides ...
@@lumpyfishgravy Just takin'er easy for all us sinners.
There's a beverage involved here, man!!
No film will ever top this one. John Goodman's performance is effing legendary.
Cache, 81/2, no country for old men, a serious man, the lighthouse etc.
All their performances wwre legendary. Its a film built on perfect writing and amazing chemistry between actors. Its fuckin awesome
@Randy White yeah the lighthouse really? Wtf
You're killing your father Larry!
Watch Barton Fink. Another terrific John Goodman performance in a Coen brothers film.
One great detail that becomes more apparent on repeat viewings is the way The Dude adopts phrases and speech patterns from the people he meets in the movie (“This aggression will not stand,” “The Dude abides,” “in the parlance of our times,” etc). Another great similar touch is when Walter corrects him for saying “Chinaman,” then a scene later the Dude visibly reacts when the Big Lebowski uses that word.
That is one of the best parts of this movie - such an interesting little touch that adds so much to the character.
After Maud uses word "Johnson", he adopts that word as well.
and his dream sequences are all things he has seen and are burned into his subconscious, like the giant scissors the germans have are from a painting in the background at maude's house and saddam being the shoe man at the bowling alley, etc.
You mean 'vagina'? 😕
When I was in the Marines in 2001, I was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii with the 3rd Marines and we had a Hispanic NCO that was tall, skinny and his last name was DeJesus. The Big Lebowski was a popular movie in our barracks and when Sgt. DeJesus was bitching someone out for whatever reason, you'd hear "Nobody fucks with Da Jesus" from people in the formation. He hated this movie...
Awesome, I was in 1/3 at kbay, I can completely see this happening, I was in 93-97

The girl who gets a toe cut off is Aimee Mann, a talented and beautiful musician. She was in a band called Til Tuesday that was popular in the 80's and had a big hit called Voices Carry.
Maude: You can imagine where it goes from here.
Dude: He fixes the cable?
Love that joke.
“Logjammin’” *classic!* One my fav’s!

@@gamleskalle1 Same reason I know it?
"His car can't get much worse." - Just wait. . .
The Dude is one of the most passive protagonists I've ever seen. Stuff just happens to him. He gets buffeted from one situation to another by forces outside his control. Walter, The Big Lebowski, Maud, Jackie Treehorn, all contribute to the chaos, while The Dude is at the center of it all. His passivity is almost a weapon in itself.
Did you notice that at one point The Dude made a White Russian using non-dairy creamer?
Did u notice the date on The Dudes check in the opening sequence?
Yeah I tried that once, I do not recommend it
Well.... that´s like..... your opinion, mann......
The plot is trying its hardest to form around the Dude, but he is so nonchalant it's not working.
@@paulcurran4786 What about the date?
This is definitely a movie you have to watch multiple times. It really gets better with each viewing. Thanks for the reaction, you guys really analyzed it well! Keep up the great work on your channel!
Truth. I’ve seen it 80 billion times.
Also at the beginning when dude writes the .69 check the date was 9/11 with George bush sr on the tv. Pretty crazy coincidence
Totally agree. This a movie that gets funnier each time I watch it. Eminently quotable. I love how it just does one big giant circle back to the start with nothing much having really happened- no kidnapping, no stolen money. It's about the journey, not the destination and the journey is about all the unique characters and how they interact.
Fun flick!
I could watch Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi arguing and playing bowling all day long 😆
This movie is best enjoyed when you realize that the plot means nothing, as it ultimately resolves itself regardless of what The Dude does. The Big Lebowski is all about the funny collection of weird and quirky characters. Also, a lot of the characters are based upon actual people the Coens knew in real life.
Kinda like Indiana Jones
@AB John Milius - there's an amazing documentary on his life called "Milius" that was released back in 2013. While I don't align with his extreme political views, he is an amazing writer and good director - and it's sad that his Stroke stopped him from doing anything again in the film industry.

The re-watchability of this movie is astronomical. Its the perfect movie for a Tuesday night and you just want to chill and enjoy yourself for the evening.
My favorite movie. It gets better with each re-watching. The Dude abides.
The Coen Brothers are so good at mixing comedy and drama. Fargo, Barton Fink and A Serious Man are some of my favorites.
They are also good at making straight up dramas like No Country for Old Men.
A serious man is definitely my favorite, and love the others you listed.
You forgot O, Brother, Where Art Thou?.
God, this film along with A Serious Man and Burn After Reading make me laugh, literally so hard 😂
Alone at 3am in the morning I found Barton Fink more disturbing than Emily Rose :| heh

Just wanted you to know, on another video on TH-cam, John Goodman gets his star on the Hollywood Hall Of Fame, and Jeff Bridges pays tribute...as The Dude. A must watch.
Dude liked more than just his friends and bowling, he liked his rug too... it tied the room together
Jeff Bridges played this part to perfection. The oafish slacker living in a haze of pot and white Russians, that the times have left behind. Whalesong music was big in the 80's yuppie culture. It's like he is in Patrick Bateman's universe, but at the opposite coast, in a very different lifestyle. The dude is the greatest character in a movie ever. I watch this movie once a year at least. You will notice new things every time.
The Coens wrote the part with Jeff Bridges in mind.
Have you noticed that the dude just repeats phrases he hears from other characters or the TV? Just like "this aggression will not stand" bit.
@@timkpunkt8171I do that, I think everyone does to some extent
This movie is an absolute classic, and it actually gets better with each viewing. 😀
This movie is a modern masterpiece. So quotable, so hilarious. John Goodman is so freaking good. I love this film, seen it dozens of times!
My favorite description of this is that the movie is trying so hard to form a plot around the dude, but he resists it through sheer force of will.
The dude 'does not' abide.
This brilliant film is only the tip of the iceberg in the Coen Brothers catalog. Other can't-miss watches include:
No Country for Old Men
Miller's Crossing
Fargo
Blood Simple
O Brother Where Art Thou
Raising Arizona
Burn After Reading
Each of these films is a classic, and endlessly rewatchable!
Where's The Hudsucker Proxy?
@@tsogobauggi8721 That's another great one!
True Grit
No Country for Old Men is one of my all time favorites. Fargo is a classic for sure, Barton Fink was great as well.
I think "No Country" is one of the best films ever made.
"The best way I've heard this described is that there's a movie trying to happen to The Dude but he just isn't having it."
“Raising Arizona” & “Oh Brother Where Art Thou” are also in the pantheon of masterfully quirky Coen Bros flicks.
the term dude comes from the 1800's, referring to a guy, typically, who was fashionable, or fancy. nowadays its basically just a slang greeting for anyone, but some places its still considered an insult lol.
The connotation in the 1800s also meant a city-slicker, somebody utterly at a loss when placed on a cattle ranch, for instance. A dude ranch was essentially a place to teach urbanites how to ride, rope, and punch cattle due to the intense popularity of cowboys in the first half of the 20th century.
Very few comedies are as consistently hilarious as this. I can't understand how Joel and Ethan Coen can write damn near anything. Comedies (Raising Arizona, The Ladykillers, O Brother, Where Art Thou?), existential dramas (Barton Fink, Inside Llewyn Davis), gangster flicks (Miller's Crossing) crime films (Blood Simple, Fargo, No Country for Old Men, hell, it's most of their filmography anyway), Westerns (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, True Grit)...
Their writing genius and almost supernatural command of the cinematic medium is what makes the Coen Brothers so damn special.
They even nail the musical elements in Hail Caesar.
Best film makers going.
Everytime I sit down to watch the newest coen brothers movie I'm so happy because you just don't know what's going to happen.
If you liked “ No Country For Old Men” , see Cormack McCarthy
Best American filmmakers. They capture everything about our country
the best way I've heard this movie described is that there's a movie trying to happen to The Dude but he just isn't interested
Yeah, specifically a detective noir movie.
This movie has some of the best censored overdubs for television, my favorite being, "This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps!"
20:05, "Ooofff... oh wait it already looked like that" 😂
What is so genius and funny is how the Dude uses liners he’s recently heard starting with the news clip at the start of the movie like “….this aggression will not stand” 😁
John Goodman kills me in this movie.
“Shut the fu&@ up Donny!!!”
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👍
“I am the walrus?”
The owner of the toe is one of the best singer-songwriters in the world: Aimee Mann.
Her husband is Michael Penn, brother of Sean Penn.
The woman playing the one who lost her toe is singer Aimee Mann.
Definitely check out another Coen Brothers classic “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” It’s a loose retelling of “The Odyssey”, set in the Depression-era South starring George Clooney (with several usual Coen Brothers contributors, like John Turturro and John Goodman). It’s not as laugh out loud funny as this, but it’s a really fun movie with a similar case of main characters wandering through a plot encountering a bunch of bizarre characters.
Also, not sure if you two recognized him (since you didn’t mention him like most of the notable supporting actors & cameos), but Maude’s weird, giggling friend is played by David Thewlis, who plays Lupin in Harry Potter.
Damn, we’re in a tight spot.

The Coen brothers have the most original films. Amazing. Their filmography is worth getting into. Raising Arizona, Fargo are 2 great Coen classics.

That rug really tied the room together.
Such a shame! The rug deserved better!
Did it not?
Fun fact, John Goodmans character was based on Director John Milius, who directed Conan The Barbarian.
that is a great fact! I've never heard that before.
Did the screenplay for Apocalypse Now too
I totally forgot Philip Seymour Hoffman is in this, I miss him. :(
Walter is always reminding everyone of his service in Vietnam and is always interrupted by something......
The scattering of Donny's ashes makes me lol every time I see it. 🤣
If you like this one, watch Raising Arizona. Cohen Brothers are genius
The Dude is one of the best film characters of all time.
Interesting musician cameos in this: Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers (one of the nihilists), Aimee Mann (who loses a toe), and Jimmy Dale Gilmore (Smokey, who gets Walter’s gun pointed at his head). All worth checking out.
Awesome , no one else ever recognizes Aimee Mann. She's great.
John Goodman's character was fashioned after the look and persona of screenwriter and director John Milius, who wrote and directed Conan the Barbarian, and wrote the screenplays for Apocalypse Now, Jeremiah Johnson, Dirty Harry and Magnum Force, and Red Dawn.
Milius is also a big right-wing conservative, and wanted desperately to fight in ‘Nam, but alas had asthma and was excluded from service.
Originally it was going to be revealed Walter never went to Vietnam during the ashes and argument scene which would have been even funnier.
The rug tied the room together.
The Dude Abides! Love this movie! It's one of the funniest and most underrated, but memorable movie from the Coen Brothers, the guys whom brought us FARGO.
Absolutely wild!
@Randy Bobandy not to mention a religion/spiritual movement.

Whenever I click on your page I always shout "TBR Scmitt!" like I'm announcing your entrance into the room. I don't really know why but it's fun to do before watching movies with ya'll.
There was a guy who rewrote this entirely as a Shakespeare play called “Two Gentleman of Lebowski.” I think it’s been performed at Lebowski Fest once or twice.
I completely forgot about that! it's so good!
Watch it again and pay attention to the facial expressions. Brandt in the car is amazing for example.
Maude's actual indignation towards the porn movie because "the story is ludicrous" will not stop being funny to me. Her speech cadence is also incredible.
What a film. Not a bad performance in the entire movie.
Glad you pointed that out...Apparently Philip Seymour Hoffman was doing everything he could to stifle his urge to burst out laughing in that scene. It's amazing to watch once you know that.
Julianne Moore is brilliant as Maude. The way she says things like, "Without batting an eye they'll refer to their dick, their rod or their...Johnson, " with that little look-away in the pause. I've rewatched her scenes over and over.
Yeah, THAT'S THE THING! Leave the plot alone for a second: THE PERFORMANCES (!!!) are epic! Every fucking character kills it!!!
Totally! The attention to detail in the acting is stellar. Almost every character is hilarious in some way. I always imagine doing roles like this is 10/10 for the actors themselves. Must be such a joy!
Never could figure out Maude's speech cadence or accent. So hilarious though! Julianne Moore's performance is as great as all the others.😊
"Raising Arizona" with Nicholas Cage is great, too!
Every reaction i've seen of this movie where there's a woman watching, they always get the most quizzical "What is that woman doing?" look on their faces when Maude is nonchalantly doing her conception exercises. I wasn't disappointed this time either lol. Love the channel!
42:46 absolutely THE most rewatchable film of all time
May I suggest another bowling comedy for you guys to react to: Kingpin staring Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray :)
Keep in mind the theory that Donnie doesn't actually exist. Notice the other bowling teams have 2 members. The Dude never interacts with Donnie. Donnie dies when Walter bites the ear off the Nihilist. He is relieved of his demons from Vietnam, letting his buddy Donnie die.
It's the only thing of substance that happens in the movie.
oh wow just realized the Autobahn album cover is a clear Kraftwork homage and their albums Autobahn and the Man-Machine never caught that one until I started listening to Kraftwork
@DeinFerm, Kraftwerk.
since I'm a massive alcohol, I've come up with my faux-white-russian.
Standard 12oz glass, filled with ice, fill 4/5ths with vodka (I use a 5x distilled) and 1/5th iced coffee. For a while I was using a can of monster java energy, but that was $3 and I'd usually need one and a half cans to get where I wanted to be. Then I found a carton of vanilla iced coffee at the grocery store for under $4.50 after tax, and that lasts at least two rounds of getting shitfaced. You cannot taste the vodka at all, there's no burn, it's just alcoholic iced coffee.
In the original script Walter never went to 'nam. He was a gun nut who tried to go but was rejected for medical reasons.
I just realized he wasn't confused when he said, "he treats objects like women." He was talking about the "fully electronic experience" 🤣
I love how the dude adopts phrases throughout the movie, even uses some of his landlord’s dance moves in his dream sequence
Saw Lebowski almost by accident, when it was first in theaters. We went to see another film, but it was sold out. We had movie passes which had to be used by the end of that particular weekend, and so we chose this as the replacement, and what a great choice. It has become iconic over the years and gets better after two or three viewings.
Number 8 on my top 100 movie list and my top-rated comedy. The word great doesn't do it justice. Coen brothers are geniuses.

A fun fact about the Dude is you never see him bowl once in the movie.

I think we should get around to "Raising Arizona" some day. Plot is pretty simple for the Cohen brothers, but it is still hilarious 😆
I’m sure others must have mentioned this but if not, the complex plot (and even the name) is based on the complex plots of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe stories, especially The Big Sleep (which was adapted into a movie by Howard Hawks and starring Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall in 1946).
