@@dmwalker24 That's kind of the thing; I've never been interested in jobs. You know, I like learning about stuff; I enjoyed my degree, I enjoyed my postgrad diploma (in something totally different), but so many jobs are just soul crushing.
I guess it's on me for not learning, but the only jobs I've ever found lived up to my expectations are the ones I expect to hate.

And he also appears uncredited in the movie. I also find it funny that everyone in the office knows Ann is sleeping with Bill Lumburgh, except for Peter of course. Why else would she have called him up to yell at him for not showing up for work on a Saturday?

In an interview with Mike Judge, he said Gary Cole who played Lumburgh was like totally serious the entire shoot. He couldn’t get a read on him if what he thought they were doing was funny. And when it came time for the sex dream sequence, Judge at the last minute before shooting the scene brought the coffee mug over to Cole to hold in his other hand and Cole lost it, laughing hysterically.

My first boss in cubicle land sounded a lot like lumberg and shared many of his catch phrases and mannerisms....walking '90s stereotype!

I worked as an engineer for 30 plus years and this movie is like a religious experience to me. Mike Judge is an absolute genius at depicting character archetypes, I have worked with Michaels, Samirs, Tom's, Miltons and unfortunately had a few Lumberghs in my day. Also, Samantha couldn't believe that two people were sharing a cube, well I shared a 4 person "cube" we called a "quad". Seeing this movie made it a lot more tolerable. I had a red Swingline and a TPS cover sheet at my desk for comfort. I have also noticed that all of the "reactors" I have seen watching this movie all quote the dialog as did I. The writing and the acting is really that great.
I was a engineering tech back in 2002 to 2004 for a computer manufacturing company and we had 3 per cubical so that was relatable but I was on a semi-off shift so I didn't have to deal with many of the office people. I dealt people more out on the manufacturing floor.

At my company, they didn't want the engineers talking to the customers, mainly because they tended to tell the truth, but also because of the lack of people skills. I was once reprimanded because I called something a failure, I guess the word I should have used was anomaly.

Watching Samantha have occasional war flashbacks during this had me HOWLING. This was PERFECT.
I saw this movie the week it came out in an empty theater, it was a total flop. Almost 25 years later it’s considered a classic. I thought it was a classic the first time I saw it.😂👍
Watched this movie for the first time on a diabolical VHS tape rental from BLOCKBUSTER.
The resurgence of the movie was when it came out on DVD and the popularity grew into a cult classic. Just like Idiocracy, it took a while before it was a hit.
The theater I was in opening weekend had only about 10 people, but it was 10 people falling out of their seats laughing.

Swingline didn't make a red stapler when this movie came out, but they got so many requests for it that they started making one.
So where did they get the stapler for the movie?
It was a prop made by the prop department for the film.
Yup. The stapler represented the relatively insignificant things and petty actions that take on in inappropriate significance in office life. They painted the stapler red so that it would stand out in the scene.
Of course, the red stapler becomes an icon. So with eBay acting as an outlet for small business... some enterprising folks started doing high-quality red paint-jobs on Swingline staplers. It takes awhile, but Swingline realized that there's actually a demand for red staplers. So they begin producing them.

Fun trivia: at the beginning “corporate accounts payable Nina speaking, just a moment” is more than just annoying, it foreshadows that this company is going bankrupt as a small company having that many people calling looking for their money is unheard of

The fact they bring in efficiency experts is also a big tell that Initech is in trouble. It's 1999 and they're doing Y2K work, which is about to go away in a few months. Probably a huge drop off in customers imminent. Milton probably did everybody a favor.

After my brother and I watched this, we had our parents watch it. My mom had to turn off the movie: "This is every goddamn day. This hurts."
I have had friends I recommended this move to only to have them come back and say they didn't like it , because like your mom, it hit too close to home. The first time I watched it , I thought it was ok, and then I watched it again and it became perhaps my all time favorite. I think if you work in a place like Initech, then you get a tinge of PTSD when you watch it, if you get over that, then it is hilarious and it makes you feel great.

In high school, I dated a girl who's father swore by this movie. He was in the software/tech support industry, and Office Space was his Ben-Hur.
The actor who played Milton, Stephen Root, was awesome in NewsRadio in the 90's. Great comedic actor. In fact, that show had many great comedic actors and was underrated for its time!
Need Radio is a great show!

People underestimate the significance of the Bobs in this story. With Peter's hypnosis-induced chill, he inadvertently told them exactly who had to be fired to increase workplace efficiency. They mistook his chill for management potential and thought Peter could do a better job than the eight people he was currently working under.
My favorite part is where he just walks right past Lumberg. Awesome disrespect without saying a word
I worked in call centers for 15 years. And everyone I worked with knew this movie by heart. Sometimes better than our own training manuals. It was our bible.
This movie is practically required viewing if you've ever worked in a call center.
Advice to corporate America. Get Mike Judge to create your training manual. Better yet the HR document.

My Dad has been in the computer industry for years. Used to work for IBM. He says this movie is exactly how it is depicted.

I saw Gary Cole give a talk with Stephen Root about the movie. Surprisingly he said he had never worked in the corporate world before and actually worked as a carpenter before he became an actor. His performance as Bill Lumbergh is every horrible office boss coalesced into one.
Back in the 90's seeing this movie and getting the boxed set of Sopranos convinced me to do exactly what Peter did and stop going to my job. It took them 11 days to finally call me asking what happened to me. Didn't even take their call. It was everything I thought it could be.

I was in my first corporate office engineering job for about six months when I saw this on a Saturday night at the theater with my wife. I was downsized Monday morning. As I walked through the parking lot with all my stuff in a box the corporate helo took off from the pad next to the employee parking lot and flew over me, pelting me with all the sand that had been spread on the snow and ice in the lot.
This movie holds a special place in my heart.
In 2005 I quit my first job out of college after I watched this movie. I did what Peter said 😂. I just stopped going to work without telling them I quit. I felt so horrible at that job and I accepted a job with longer commute in Long Island but I was happier there.
I did that at one of my old jobs, I still have the uniform. I thought about showing up in my uniform and saying “Sorry I’m 5 years late, I overslept”
I had a job interview with McDonald's once, got hired, ate the free meal they gave then walked out the door with the uniform they gave me and never came back.
Falling Down (1993) with Michael Douglas is another film that starts in a traffic jam that you ought to check out.
Fantastic comedy! It's got some of the best lines that have stuck with me forever.

Loved this reaction! This is one of my favorite films. I temped in a zillion different offices through most of the 90's and EVERY SINGLE office had some off-brand copier/fax/printer combo nightmare that ate my papers, constantly jammed and produced bizarre error codes. There was always one machine. It never failed.
This one is such an underrated comedy. For any of us who either work or have worked in an office setting, this hits close to home in seemingly every scene. Super rewatchable too. Glad you guys reacted to this gem :)
A really good melodic hardcore band named None More Black has a song called "The Ratio of People to Cake" after Milton's line. It's a banger.
I love Milton! He's a very timid character, but don't take away his stapler, otherwise, you'll piss him off and he'll burn down your place of business. Lol!!

The company Swingline actually produced a red version because of this movie. I still have my red Swingline to this day.
The woman who plays Peter's girlfriend Ann was a guest on Seinfeld's Comedians In Cars show. She worked on the sitcom one time, and they became friends. Her Comedians In Cars episode was pretty good. She has a great sense of humor (kinda goes without saying). Alexandra Wentworth. She's married to George Stephanopolous.
She was also a regular on the sketch comedy series, "In Living Color".
It's great how this and Silicon Valley explore the opposite extremes of IT culture: Soulless, traditional, business-to-business cubicle type, and then the hype, fake creativity, and psychobabble of consumer-facing startups. And they're both maddening.
they are both maddening, because they are both subtly fake and useless, proport to do a thing without actually doing it, spending vast quantities of money to do jack-all, focus exclusively on niche skills or personality that aren't relevant to the actual production, the people doing the actual work get shafted while nepotism and incompetency abound, what get's marketed to the customer doesn't at all really relate to the actual product, pathology is hidden under a rug of "professionalism" and "passion", the HR job listings don't really make sense, there's a lot of hyped up shiny objects and flashy style that hides mediocrity and mundanity, ton's of jargon and word salad, and at the end of the day, IS COMPLETLY UNECCESSARY TO THE JOB. but not to management. it's not about power, it's about control. their control.

When I lived in DC, I used to learn Spanish during my commute to and from work. On Fridays, my traffic was so bad I used to go and watch a movie for 2 hrs to skip the really heavy part of it. The funny thing is, I got home only an hour later than if I had left at my normal time. Crazy to think , right. Such is office life.

Gary Cole is great in every film I've seen him in.
He was a working actor in TV for a while (almost got the role of Sonny Crockett on "Miami Vice"), and this film made him famous.
i liked him as Carlos in I Spy. seriously underrated movie.
his comment about the 'phone voice' is 100% my wife and i worked in a call center for a long time and most people have that voice but only on calls. and the beep in your ear for an incoming call would take hours to go away. and even after quitting I still would hear it in my sleep for at least a year after.
I know what you mean. Most of my working life has been in restaurants and I still hear that ticket machine every now and then.
The opening to this movie (the traffic scene) was literally shot where I commuted at the time. It hit me VERY hard. God I hated that traffic. Probably the best thing in this movie is how little of the humor is dependent on the plot; most of the humor is just the mundane horrors of working in an plain vanilla office.

635 in Dallas or Braker ln in Austin? Both are used in the traffic scene to open the movie. Non-actor shot is in Dallas and the actor scenes are in Austin. And I've unfortunately done both... more times than i wish to remember...
@@zimvader25 635 and North Dallas Tollway. I worked off Midway, so I literally was in those lanes. Hated every single moment, so much that the commute is one of the top three things I consider on any job.

I'm happy to see Raising Arizona on your comedy list - it's so weirdly funny. The restaurant stuff in Office Space is great - you should try Waiting - for those who toiled in restaurants. And finally I hope The Blues Brothers makes it to the comedy list - the only musical I love.
I love 'Raising Arizona'. I love that there is a 15 min opening scene and then the beginning credits start. It's so good, you don't even realize it until they start.

OK, underdog recommendation time: Everytime I see Diedrich Bader (Peter´s neighbor), I´m reminded of The Beverly Hillbillies. A GREAT Jim Varney comedy, that I loved growing up.
Also Crazy, Stupid Love! Probably my favorite comedy of all time, if it wan´t for Top Secret, which you´ve already reacted to ......
Not sure if this was mentioned, but the film is based on a cartoon short that aired on MTV's Liquid Television, which also debuted Beavis & Butt-Head and Aeon Flux. Basically the short was just Milton and the boss scene with the stapler. I still remember watching Liquid Television in high school.
Aeon Flux was amazing & was the brain child of Peter Chung. Chung was also responsible for the character design on Rugrats.
Aeon Flux used to be on BBC 2 here in the UK at 6:30pm…..yeaaaah, don’t ask, they were weird times 😂

Back in 2017 i got to work with Ron Livingston on a movie i tried like hell to find a crappy printer/copier with a Bat and bottle of VAT69, but sadly couldn't get them in time, even he liked the idea and was game for it. We mostly talked about and shared stories about Band of Brothers as we both tried to out Drink Wild Bill & Babe from E co. and i had all my E co. uniform and gear , so he signed my copy of BOB which Maj. Winters also had signed , he also signed my chin cup on my Jump Helmet. really great guy i got to walk him to his car when he left for the airport and and we just talked and i got to thank him for his work on BOB.
I saw this when it first came out and it was also before I had a job and I saw it later while I was working in a corporate building and it was frightening how dead-on accurate it was, it made it so much funnier. Also, be sure to watch the behind the scenes short, Mike adds a ton of extra details (he plays Joanne's manager).
Yup! I worked for an Aerospace Co. in my hometown for 7 years from 1981 to 1989. One of my supervisors there was very much like Lumbergh. Same looks and attitude. Of all days in 1989 . . . I was laid-off on Labor Day weekend. During my time there it was wild. Drug use (weed and cocaine) and alcohol use after work (especially one the weekends), and at work as well. Also the occasional fights between employees at work. Nobody was fired for that. In December of 1989 I was hired as a temp at another Aerospace Co. that was owned by GM. There were about 2,500 to 3,000 employees there. I was hired as a Material Coordinator and I had a cubical doing a lot of data entry on the computer transferring electronic and mechanical parts to different departments. 'Office Space' does remind me a lot of my work experiences. Retired now, but there are those days that I think about the fun, wild crazy and the hatred (many days of "the case of having the Munday's") going to work in that kind of work environment. You should watch "Idiocracy" now... Another Mike Judge movie that is really good (he also did the Bevis and Butthead series)

This movie is infinitely quotable but the best line in the movie is one of the best in any comedy I've seen. It is when Peter is giving Michael and Samir the pep talk after telling them that are about to be fired and he says, 'This isn't just about me and my dream of doing nothing it's about all of us."
Absolutely love this movie. Gets better and better with each viewing, especially if you've ever worked a cubicle job, call center job, or especially a remote work from home job now dealing with virtual Lumberghs in chat rooms.
Saw this movie for the first time on a plane. Best plane movie ever! I've worked half my life for a company with the word "tech" in it, so I can relate.

This is exactly what working in an office in 1999 was like, Matrix came out the same year and I swore we were living in it. They’d suck your soul out, one voicemail at a time, then dock your pay for being 2 minutes late. This is yet another Judge documentary, along with Idiocracy.
And my TPS reports still aren’t done right. Funny thing: nearly every software company I’ve been at has a TPS report floating around paying homage to this movie.
In case nobody else is mentioned it, Steven Root who plays Milton was also the water monger in an episode of _The Book of Boba Fett_

I actually skipped out on a job interview to go to the premiere of this movie. And I got a free t-shirt (it had the movie poster printed on it) because I was in a suit. That t-shirt had the tag line "work sucks" in bright red on the back and I liked wearing it to my crappy day job and my coworkers thought it was great 😛

Sam your reaction to this movie was simply the best. Your tales of road rage, windowless cubical life, printer hate, and dreams of getting that ultimate printer revenge all speak to me so well. Mike Judge went where no movie went before this, he showed the modern-day terror we all face heading into offices grinding to get that paycheck. EVen as a freelance worker, I experience short bursts of office life. BTW I'm the guy who comes by and fixes the printer when it's making people lose their shit.
Diedrich Bader as Laurence is probably one of the best neighbor characters ever made. "No. Shit no, man. I believe you'd get your ass kicked for saying something like that."

I was among the small handful of people that saw this in the theater when it came out. I was 19. It spoke to me on such a deep level; that feeling of dreading work every day was so relatable. Also it's just so damn funny and quotable.
I think I've probably watched Office Space more times than any other movie I own.
I was told that I could listen to TBR Schmitt at a reasonable volume.
1999 had 3 amazing comedies. Office Space, South Park and Dogma.
And one hilarious unintentional comedy - the Phantom Menace.
I loved this movie before I ever worked in an office environment. Then I got a job at an AT&T call center. The four and a half years I spent there made me love this movie even more.

The actor Ron Livingston was great. Every time I see this movie I really think that he could have played the role of Jim in The Office TV show. John Krazinski, I love though. And the character of Milton I just couldn't get enough of he was so great thank you for reacting to this movie.
I worked for a company that had to move locations. There was a couple old printers that were not worth moving so our bosses gave us a bat and let us have our own office space moment with them. 😄

Fun fact: Swingline didn't make a red stapler until this movie and people started demanding them and it was ridiculously successful. Mike Judge felt they were "generous" to him.
you just KNOW the director of photography had to feel like a cinema GENIUS setting up that dramatic camera spin when the Bobs ask Lumbergh about HIS job. It delivers such a satisfying literal "turning of the tables" lol.
Another movie that has a great corporate job freakout scene is Joe vs The Volcano with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. It's not what the whole movie is about, but it's still a really cute and quirky movie.
The struggle is REAL! I'm a medical biller, and when someone gives me the puzzled look when I say that I just ask them if they've seen this movie or The Office. Then I tell them to imagine that but not funny.....
Everybody used to tell me that working in the manufacturing field was such hard and grueling and I shouldn't have studied for it, that it was a waste of time, this movie alone makes me glad I never studied accounting. Although I work in an office now, its far less mind breaking than this. Lol

This movie is still relevant today.
1. Classic movie. It's the first movie I purchased on DVD.
2. The printer scene is extremely cathartic for anyone who has worked in tech support. I've actually included it after making students memorize the seven steps of laser printing. It's their reward and mine.

The interesting thing about the story is that he is able to find some happiness by getting out of cubicles, and into a more physical job outdoors. Corporate BS is so much worse now, my coping mechanism was to refuse to work in an office all together, and insist on working from home. Quit the first job that wouldn't accept those terms, and kept looking until I found one that would.
Terrific comedy. The actor playing Michael Bolton and the actor playing the magazine salesman were both early cast members of MadTV, the brilliant sketch comedy show of the 1990s & 2000s. You must check out episodes of MadTV from the first five seasons.

Legendary movie, legendary characters, real-life drama. This movie is much more relevant today then when it was released. The fact that Clarence finds happiness and satisfaction while Peter, Samir, and Michael struggle is the ultimate lesson in life. Jennifer Anniston is so cool in this movie, she's got one of the best character arcs ever. 10/10 classic movie, Mike Judge is a genius. 90's Corollas are possibly the best car ever made in history. I owned one.
They couldn't have done a better job of depicting the soul-sucking environment of cube life. My wife hasn't spent 10 seconds in such a place, even to visit me at work, and she got it and found it hilarious.
I love that it's the same restaurant with different uniforms and table cloths, because isn't that actually sort of how it is?
