I just got hit by a car recently. I'm 16 and i had very little knowledge of what i and supposed to do. The car T-boned me coming of of a drive way. I was on the sidewalk. He stopped and looked genuinely concerned, my bike went flying into the middle of the street. He helped me up, nothing hurt except my leg and hand. I got up, i was late to meet up with a friend. I was trying to get out of there fast. He asked if my bike was okay. I checked over it in 10 second. And rode off, now about a week later i feel like an idiot as my bike is falling apart and will cost over 100$ to fix and now I'm left with the bill even tho it was not my fault. I should have at least gotten the mans information. I was confused and i just left school. These are things students should be taught in school. I should have watched this video before.

ive ben hit by vehicles three times in toronto, twice in the bike lane and twice from impatient cars making left hand turns before making sure the way was clear. only once did the vehicle stop (because i was on the hood.) it was a canada post truck. i called the cops and had to deal with their risk management department which initially tried to get me to foot some of the bill (i was in a bike lane going straight.) before i finally settled on a low settlement which didn't account for the paint damage on my mint vintage frame. i feel like if i were ever hit again and the vehicle stopped, i'd try to get them to pay me directly (ie: walk them to an ATM and give me cash.) i'm the one that got hit and is losing money on the bike and from time off work. i was really hoping this video was going to have information on what to do when you get hit by a vehicle and the driver DOESN'T stop, as this is far more common and leaves the cyclist without recourse.

Step one) don't get hit. 2) if you do, don't move a muscle, check yourself out by feeling for pain without actually moving, especially don't turn your head, flex your back, avoid coughing or any sudden violent movements. After 5minutes, gently use your hand(s) to remove helmet, without moving your neck, don't look around stay still. Examine the helmet with your eyes, if not damaged check your neck by pressing against the back of it gently. IMPORTANT, don't do anything if your helmet seems significant impact has occurred, remain perfectly still and call emergency, tell them your head was injured but don't strain to see street sings. If your head is bleeding, or if your neck or back show signs of injury, be extremely careful as any further movement could cause permanent nerve damage. People will come to you, trust strangers your life may be on the line, don't protect yourself, let others come to your aid, which is the main reason you don't get out of the road until you become fully aware you have no head neck or back injuries. Don't allow people to move you out either, inform them it is illegal to touch you if you don't want to be touched. 3) once aware HNB injuries are very minor and your able, get out if the road. Assume you are in shock, no matter what take the license plate and phone number of the vehicle you hit or got hit by,, and give them your number as well, obtain their name as well. 4) if your body has no injuries at all, inspect the bicycle starting with the frame and wheels, then check pedals, seat, and handlebars for proper fit and angles. Then check tires, accessories like water cages and lights, finally test the bike off-road for gears and brakes functionality, then no sooner than 10 minutes after a hands-down bicycle accident where your body hit the floor, take off. If you didn't hit the ground chance of head neck back injuries is extremely small. Obviously if you had complet awareness throughout the crash you can lessen the amount of body and bike examination accordingly, but still obtain the most information of the driver you can.

What happened was that her window tinting was so dark that she couldn't see my lights. I was riding a Cannondale R800 at the time (21 years ago). The impact put a dent in the frame. I explained to her insurance company that the composite frame couldn't be repaired and they cut me a check for $1200 to replace the bike. I bought a Fuji Touring bike with the money and had a few hundred left over. I commuted around town with that Fuji for 18 years. The take away? Pay attention to traffic and wear a helmet. As I tell my friends, It doesn't matter how well you ride. It's how badly they drive.
pretty much did what is said got up emitted a few choice expletives directed at no one in particular then took myself to the side of the road and asked a passing commercial vehicle for their first aid kit all the while trying to calm down the person who hit me who was rather agitated, not aggressively but out of horror of what he had just done. If struck by a car, get out of the road way if you possibly can. You could be struck by another motorist because they may not see you. Look for the plate of the car that hit you once you are to safety. Get to safety and then sit down or lean on something. Call 911 or tell any witness to dial 911. Don't leave the scene of the accident. Tell the driver to not leave. Wait for the police and the ambulance. Get checked out by the paramedics whether you think you are seriously injured or not. You will be in shock when you first get hit. You will not feel your injuries and you won't be completely aware of what just happened. Ask help from witnesses, you will want as many witnesses as possible when the police get there. Work with the police, you want the police to cite the driver. You are going to go after the motorist's insurance when the medical bills come up. DO NOT shrug off your injuries, they may be serious and if you don't have documents to back everything up it will hurt you getting compensated. Remember if you aren't at fault, don't act like you are or feel guilty. Get a lawyer and have them go after the insurance company.

You don't really walk away after this type of incident. It involves an ambulance and at least a night in ER if you are lucky
