It’s called narcolepsy. I actually worked with someone like that. She used to fall to sleep during work, during lectures, whilst travelling etc. In and out of sleep all day. She eventually was diagnosed and treated with serotonin, melatonin treatment. She eventually graduated as a Biomedical Scientist. I remember her because she was one of my students. Understanding has moved on, thank God.

Yes, my daughter went to high school with a girl who has narcolepsy, she would fall asleep in class, but still hear everything that was going on. She would never go into REM, which would explain the lack of dreams like this woman.

I'm a retired nurse, this is what I think- I think they inadvertently discovered without realizing it at the time that this child had an untreatable type of seizure disorder that showed up after she was accidentally overdosed with whatever subatance they gave her, or the substance was possibly the CAUSE of the seizure disorder and that the seizure disorder either mimicked or evolved into a form of narcolepsy. There was definitely narcolepsy at hand. In Victorian times her condition would have been shameful and they would have protected her and kept her out of sight. Women were only of worth when they became married and had children back then. Her narcolepsy would have prevented her from doing noble work as a nurse or a school teacher even if she chose to not marry. I also suspect the parents didn't want her to become a sideshow simply because her condition was really hit and miss and not as consistent as the papers would lead it to be. I also speculate her early death was simply due to the untreated seizure disorder, unless the narcolepsy caused her some sort of a physical fatal head or internal injury.
    Fascinating stuff! Luv your videos!

First of all, no I would not have my child be a freak show. Second of all, it sounds like she sustained some form of brain damage when the doctor gave her the chloroform or whatever it was. Narcolepsy was my first thought. Then I had another thought. “Sleeping sickness”!! I thought there was a condition that was caused by the bite of some sort of fly or mosquito.
I wondered why the “doctor” used “chloroform”?? Chloroform I thought was used in surgery or dentistry to put a person to sleep. Odd.
Medicine was so just in its infancy back in that time. Medicine has advanced so much since the 1800s.

Lamont, thank you for yet another excellent video of ordinary American people who lived an extraordinary life in extraordinary circumstances, the Italian American story involving the Mafia, that black boy who was brutally murdered by a gang of men who came over to the kid's grandfather's home in the early hours of the morning, to kidnap and torture and brutally murder him for something that he and his friends did when they went to the shop owned by the wife of one of the murderers, to name just a couple of those stories that I have recently watched on your TH-cam channels. thank you 🤗 I wouldn't put my child on a stage for no amount of money, life is precious and has a value greater than any riches of this world could ever offer me. Despite life being tough on occasions.

Definitely NOT because I could not be there to watch them and there are too many untrustworthy humans. I would NOT exploit my children for money unless their life depended on it and I needed money for food or a life saving operation for them.

So interesting 🤔. I wonder how this.could happen? Sleeping all the time and you wake up and get convulsions.. could it be epilepsy?. Wow may she rest in peace. So sad.

I haven't heard of this. Just a wild story. And I'm not surprised Barnum wanted to exploit her, that's just trifling.

Thanks for sharing Lamont. So sad how her life ended. I wish they could have figured out what was wrong with her. I am not saying for this to happen but I think if they exhumed her body and there was still DNA left. They would probably find an answer to what it was. Rest In Peace.

There’s a family friend that had that N . He be talking n fall asleep. Amazingly ... he continued on with his original conversation. He had his license taken away. We lived in a small town, so everyone knew him by sight. So ... he’d walk to visit friends n along the way he’d stop at peoples front edge lawn n fall asleep. Everyone took care of him.. they would offer water or coffee or food n even put an umbrella for him. Long story short... it lasted 12-14 years only. He got use to walking n decided he didn’t want to drive. His 60 yrs old now n mows lawns. Sweet man . God Bless Him. 🙏
N NO I WOULD NOT PUT MY CHILD AS A FREAK SHOW.
    This is an illness.
Thank you Lamont for your traveling n capturing these interesting true stories 🙏.
