2" UNC Tap Size Holes-Tool Tuesday Ep.17

  • I have a customer job in the shop that requires some steel plate to be machined with 2" UNC holes. Since I don't have the exact tap drill size needed I used our Flex CNC to drill and mill the holes to size. Here I am getting the program proven and be sure the holes will be on size. I use my ‪@TungaloyCorporation‬ 1" Drill Meister to get a hole established then use Fusion's 2D Adaptive clearing to mill the holes to exact tap size. I plan to use my Flexarm and 2" tap to cut the threads in the workpieces. #cncmachining #flexcnc #flexarm #tungaloy #helical

    That's the smart way to go, not rushing in with all the things you can do with a cnc. It makes learning easier when you can take it in parts. Once you feel comfortable with the things you're doing, then move on to the threading. Since you already have a perfect machine to do that part of a job quickly and efficiently, go with it.

    Hi Adam and Abby,
    That worked out very nice, thanks for sharing.
    Interesting thought on the thread milling, look forward to seeing that being done.
    A thought on tapping the holes though, of course the productivity of the cnc machine is higher when it is only drilling and boring the holes whilst the holes are being tapped post cnc work.
    That influences how one does the costing for a job as less of the cnc machine time is being sold, pretty interesting stuff.
    Kind regards,
    Duncan, South Africa

      The tools I have used have come from companies that also have on line programs to produce the code specific to their tools. I would suggest getting one and giving it a go. The way you feel about that chamfering operation will be matched by how you feel about thread milling.

    3:13 ...Definitely thread milling is the way to go ... WAY less wear & tear on the threading machine.
    Plus one size of "insert holder" & inserts .. To cut any size thread later than it's effective diameter!!
    And no expensive giant p to risk breaking!! :) .. Looking forward to when Adam sets it up on the FlexCNC .

    Hey Adam, glad to see you’re getting comfortable with CNC you should try the boring cycle in fusion 360 it will produce a shorter chip with no radial deflection should produce a more accurate hole.

  • @RonGarrisonProductions
    @RonGarrisonProductions 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great video. It really shows off how fast and precise the CNC is once you get it dialed in. You showed that the holes were consistent within a couple of tenths, Given that the internal finishing cut is done at full depth, I was wondering if the taper resulting from tool deflection would be measurable over a 1 to 1.5 inch deep hole. It should be an easy measurement.

    Adam don't worry and I am retired and 74, last time I ran machine tools for a living was 1970. I then worked as a design engineer until I retired. I went back to help for (4 weeks) my friend. I thread milled 12 nuts for 50mm diameter 2 start left hand 10mm lead trapezoidal threads. The first nut I did the gauge he had made by another firm when in first try. I then did some single start right nuts. Spiral milled bore to size.

    You will enjoy thread milling.....keep in mind, if you use a single tooth thread mill cutter you may have to model (sketch profile) the tooth profile and insert that into the parameters for that cutter, in the F360 model, use the minor diameter of the threaded hole and don't model in the threads. Getting the PDO dialed in may take a few test cuts. Keep in mind on setting the stepover that each cut will have a greater engagement into the thread and employing a "Repeat" or spring pass will result in a nice non tapered thread. Doing a chamfer pass after thread milling provides for a nice, finished look and will remove any burrs from the thread milling operation.

    • @MechanicalAdvantage
      @MechanicalAdvantage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Physically modeling the threads makes thread milling in Fusion more difficult in my opinion. With a cosmetic thread, you get a solid cylinder to select so all you need to adjust is your pitch diameter offset. You will see him do thread milling in the future. i'm confident of that. This is just a really expensive workpiece and he didn't want this job to be his first time for threadmilling.

    • @ericsandberg3167
      @ericsandberg3167 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MechanicalAdvantage Good point Kevin.......Adam was impressed with hitting that bore diameter within a few tenths, that's why I think he will really get a kick out of seeing a thread mill plunge into a hole and then helix its way out cutting a perfect thread....should be a very entertaining vid for the viewers.

    That table on the flexarm just torques the steel compared to shorter CNC.
    Power spindle or tool is huge and only hanging on the vice jaws by wisker.
    Splinters causing mayhem with speed.
    Neutral safe inspection important no error step.
    Taps that size only have plugs.
    Looks like you are more comfortable with CNC.
