Pick leaving the Straits was such a shame musically. Their sound changed after that, he was such a fast and crisp drummer, he makes those first albums for me.
I remember growing up & my dad use to listen to them and wouldn’t let us have the radio on but we all use to end up singing to it on long road trips, I want my mtv them were the day’s
Just tuned in i and saw dires straits drummer, never herd of him and thought this will be boring but I'm now glued to by seat its the same with all your guest. don't no how you do it
I strongly recommend John Illsley's recently published book My life in Dire Straits. Soo interesting and beautifully written with Mark Knopfler's foreword. Some nice words about Pick as well
I concur with the comment about John Illsley's book. I enjoyed reading it very much. Also enjoyed watching this interview, thanks for sharing it, but why is Pick wearing a plant pot on his head please? 😀
Hands down, Pick Withers’ contribution to Dire Straits’ album, Making Movies, is the single best contribution to an album in the rock era. Any other drummer in the studio, and that album would not have been nearly as good or nearly as successful. He was the best musician in that band. There, i said it…
Iv gotta agree..1st the beat of a drum beat..then the bass guitarist dum de dum..then the rythym..then the lead..in that order. But to say he was 'the best musician in that band"..oh cmon man...yer frkin kiddin me..as a "collective"...it was magical..they 'collectively' gave a 'tune'..a certain 'sound'.Every part..every beat..every snare or bass drum was under M.k's instruction..includin tellin each member what to play was written, sung and played by a certain M.Knopfler.Inc what Pick Withers hit!!!!..wen n how!!!!
Withers'left' ...'opted out' the band because he couldnt handle the fame or the massive fame to come ..simple as!!...he simply 'opted out'..ta say he was the 'best musician' yer talkin out ya arse pal.End ov.
Very nice interview with a legendary musician indeed,I never had the opportunity to attend a live show for dire straits and they are my #1 rock band that I grew up on their music. Love and respect to the royal band
Loved there song money for nothing did you billy have to watch this one love there music well in lad for getting one of them on la from dave the rave in scouseland
Cheers billy and pick , the first 4 albums are great . My fav of those are making movies and love over gold . Timeless classics . Brothers in arms was probably the most popular but they’d never of got to that album with the first class 4 albums. ✌️making movies I’d choose top coz of age I heard it and what was goin on in my teens
Dear Pick, Cuxhaven is not the Baltic Sea, it's the North Sea Coast, but If you'll ever play in Cologne again, I'll be there. Dear Billy, thanks for the Interview!
Enjoyed that Billy, good interview. Your mic levels are up and down, so you're voice really blasts through earphones quite often. Give us a call and I can tell you how to sort it out really cheaply, if you're not already onto it. Not selling you anything, just advice. Premier Flutes
Maybe its me..but it must be Pick Withers..but he looks so aged now n different.I once met the whole band in 1985 after the Brothers In Arms..he bought me a drink Dec 7th a Sat night a nite i'l never forget.
Billy I noticed my joke about turning a drummer into a guitarist was erased. I meant no harm mate....it was just a joke. It is the same joke as "how do you turn a duck into a soul singer"?....."Put it into a microwave until it's Bill Withers. I changed it to turning a drummer into a guitarist...."put him into a microwave until his pick withers". Just in case you thought I was taking the piss or something.
Hi Bill, Interesting episode and a little different from the norm I'm sure you’ll agree Albeit Picks delivery method is a little bit to slow for me I'm afraid ;( zzzzz Top Podding all the same Fella ;)
I agree with @paul Williams he wasn’t a very gd talker he cudnt hold me,, not a reflection on you billy ur doing great and the best podcast out there,, ur getting them mate and always take the time to reply,, mad my fav band but a slow taker mad you have patience of a saint mate.. sending ❤️👍
Glad he didn't mention Sha Waddy Waddy when he talked about LIECESTER bands ,they were so conceited loud mouthed, horrible ,and mimed mostly on live shows, they played for a week at club I worked , they packed the the place ,dressed as teddy boys miming to covers of 50s hits.Reminded me of the adage "you can fool most of people all of the time......." etc .
Were the songs David would write not what the record company wanted, or did Mark just not like those kinds of songs anymore? Mark seems to have gotten the songs written though, there were no real low points. If any, it may be the ones David mentioned as having participated writing.
I have listened to a few Pick Withers interviews.....seems like a bit of an egotist, the drums are there to drive the band, its called lead guitar for a reason. Knopfler wrote the songs which in turn gives him the power to dictate,Pick couldn't handle that,so he left. These musicians are all the same, all wanting the glory and their egos stroking rather than getting on with the job
Well that's one version! How many other players left?..... and were THEY, all wrong too? I'm a big Straits and MK fan but his treatment of others (THEN, that's important) especially his own brother.....was appalling!
@@tu1949 I don’t dispute Knopfler is a tool, but where the music was concerned he wrote it so he has the power the tell others what he wants from them musically and be forthrite when he thinks it’s not good enough (his brother mainly) Withers seems to be a bit of an egotist to me but that’s up to him,it only cost him about 30 million quid😂😂😂
@@simoncbr900rr crossed purposes there, I think. In those days, as his brother said at the time..."I thought we were supposed to be a democracy but I was obviously wrong". The songs were MKs, fine....but the founding members DK and JI were there right from the start and David was entitled to his opinion and not be told to "eff off" each time he made a comment! Re' Pick Withers....he tells of an incident where he was interviewed for a prominent magazine and whilst reading it....it was literally snatched from his hands, by MK...who said, "I'm in that next month". As previous, I've been a fan of both the Straits AND MK since the late 70s....for the songs and the music...which is Mark's.....I'm aware of that. I was simply making an observation following some of the comments about Pick.
@@tu1949look back in the day when they all started out you want to want it bad to make it mark and John did pick and David didn’t simple as that pick comes across like who did mark think he was well he was the writer lead player and singer and came up with all the ideas
A very long forgettable speech from Pick and very little surrounding Pick's departure from DS. Would have preferred 15 minutes on that subject as that is what most DS fans are interested in. Like your channel but this was tedious
An often overlooked drummer who is one of the best, ever so tasty and solid, creative and original.
Oh my gosh, Seeing and hearing him on “Sultans of Swing”
He was amazing! He was so intuitive. Beautiful.
Fantastic drummer! I love Pick Withers...and I love that maroon tupperware plate on his head.
What a band alchemy the best live concert I’ve ever heard,, magic
Just remember Pick wasn't in the band during Love over Gold tour, he quit just after recording the album. That was Terry Williams already
Yes the drummer of Alchemy was Terry Williams. Another kind of drummer!! Terry was so energic with other technic
I must get John's book. I saw Dire Straits in 1992 in Wellington, New Zealand. Great gig. I was 19. Memories indeed. Moved to the UK in 2000.
What an incredible tight drummer
Abosolutely one of the best.
Pick leaving the Straits was such a shame musically. Their sound changed after that, he was such a fast and crisp drummer, he makes those first albums for me.
Me too.
Ooooh my goodness!!!! Shame on me! I thought Pick....had...passed!!! Soooooo exciting to see him!!!! Hear him!!!!
❤️❤️

What a band 👍🏻

Love you Pick
Miss you
Miss the original foursome. The band was as ineffable as music could get in the 20th century

Knopfler wrote and synchronised it all he was the lead guitarist and singer sorry but a guitar will always sound better than drums in my opinion

Communique has always been my desert island choice.
Great bunch of musicians but lets be honest it was Marks playing and writing that made Dire straits.
I had a sat job and spent my all of it each week buying a dire straits cassette but it took two weeks for the live one alchemy
Cassette tapes those were the days

Jim Chapin that he mentions is the father of Harry &Tom Chapin considered to have been one of the best jazz drummers of all time!!
