I didn't know about Tony de Peltrie and it's funny because it's so much more advanced and mindblowing if you know the least bit about early computer graphics but Money for Nothing is much more colorful, vibrant and the stylization of the characters has aged so much better. It has that early Virtua Fighter low poly charm to it, I always loved it even tho I was born a decade later. It's so fascinating that it was such an important piece of work that it both revolutionized visual media and killed the band. Loved the whole 50 minutes of it, gold material.
I randomly stumbled upon it while having autoplay on, the intro was long but I gave it a chance Oh Lord, I didn't regret giving it a chance. When I listen to it... everytime is like the first time...
The use of the f-slur was 100% justified in context imo. But I can understand not playing the uncensored cut in the radio since it would be jarring to hear it while shopping, at a restaurant, etc
It’s amazing how many songs got away with swears until like ten years ago on the radio…Guns and Roses “Mr Brownstone” and Pink Floyd’s “Money” are two songs that weren’t edited for radio play until recently to go along with radio stations playing the full version of “Money For Nothing” which uses the word three times instead of just the one swear each for the other two. Also what’s up with radio censoring “God” instead of “damn” when an artist says “god damn?” Hahaha
I quite liked the video! Seems like a lot of research went into it, which I appreciate. I can't help but think it's a bit inaccurate to say that the song and video is critical of MTV. As you point out elsewhere in the video, the song is satirizing people who are talking shit about musicians on MTV. Knopfler might not have been a big fan of music videos, but to me, the message of the song is not that MTV is bad, but that people who think making music is getting "money for nothing" are ignorant.
The title of the album was Brothers in Arms which I feel is the best song Knopler ever wrote. I,ve never heard it played on the radio in the States. In Europe the song Brothers in Arms was played over the radio a lot more often than the other songs on the album. The song won a Grammy for best music video.
That’s my favorite Dire Straits song and classic rock stations in the USA could really stand to take “Walk of Life” outta their rotations a bit and replace it with “Brothers in Arms!” Incredible lead guitar work > Cheesy 80s synth riff
Great deep dive into the history behind the song/video... and ya, I watched the premier on Mtv, they hyped it mercilessly leading up to it, but it was worth the wait.
That was the single best use of the Matalfunctioining Eddie “wHAT?!” I’ve ever seen. Well done. Though I seriously can’t wrap my head around chart topping songs using that word so casually.
That was a really interesting video! I’ve been interested in computer animation for the past few years, and I’ve been wondering what the story was behind this video ever since I saw it at the end of the State of The Art of Computer Animation Laserdisc
what I love about the music Video, is that it was the first CGI production from a little studio in Vancouver, BC, Canada called "Mainframe Entertainment" They would later create 3 amazing CGI Cartoons "Beast Wars: Transformers", "Shadow Raiders" and my Childhood favourite "Reboot" these two characters would make an appearance in Season 1 Episode 11, "Talent Night" when they are shown trying to Qualify for Enzo's Birthday Party. {Edit} HEY, you mentioned all of it closer towards the end of the video! nice!! I'm subscribed now.. you definately did your homework extensively. 🤘🤘
I had always thought it was about how this dude is complaining about really surface level and uninformed opinions about the music industry, while the actual consumer base just wants their mtv
I still were you are coming from. Princes Purple Rain dropped in the Summer of 1984. I still highly suspect it's George Michael, but hey those guys could have been talking about anyone at the time ;)
Considering the line "yeah buddy, that's his own hair" I would assume someone with big hair. The entire point is that at the time, there were lots of male singers with earrings, makeup and big hair. And lot of working men were assuming any of those made you gay. It's the equivalent of "all those boybands are gay". Assuming there ever was a specific person is already missing the point.
39:25 We Built This City is one of the most hated songs of the decade? What????? Since when? I guess everyone is entitled to their opinions. But there is a reason that the song got second in that top 100 list. Now I don't really recall the video all that much, but the song itself was very popular and it's a classic. Now just like every really good song, it gets seriously overplayed, which often results in it getting a lower opinion, just because people get sick of it. But you just have to look at how it did at the start and how has it stood the test of time. And that song did well, and people still love it today.
The minute or so starring at 23:47 should have been summarized, if not removed entirely. That's a bunch of jargon-laden esoteric rememberances for which almost no one watching will have any interest, let alone capacity to understand.
Mark Knoftler is a musical genius and world wide legend. The "offended police" need to harden up. There are loads of words totally acceptable back in the 80's people would have a heart attack now days. Aussie and UK slang would have most snowflakes cry. Dire Straits music will live on in history!
That word was not "totally acceptable" in the 80's. There were just fewer people objecting to it. I was a kid in the 80s with gay friends, and we cringed when we heard it. We still listened to it, but no way would I ever say it was 'acceptable,' any more than sexist, abusive songs and otherwise objectionable songs and videos. We're constantly changing and evolving, and that's a good thing. I still listen to a lot of that same music. But let's not whitewash the past.

I was nine in 85 and remember seeing "Back to the Future" in the theater.
Money for nothing is what gets me up in the morning
Money for nothing is the best song I have ever heard.
I randomly stumbled upon it while having autoplay on, the intro was long but I gave it a chance
Oh Lord, I didn't regret giving it a chance. When I listen to it... everytime is like the first time...
Amazing video, I learned a lot.
Another seriously underrated guitarist.
‘85 must’ve been one heck of a year: this, BttF, the NES…
Must be why we're so preoccupied with it. :P
All down hill a year later
Interesting new info 👍.

From the videos perspective, the character is calling him a f****t
exactly, the song is clearly not from their first person point of view, but the censoring is completely justified
the gay peapole dosent exist, they pretend to be it just because they dont wanna work, and get money breaking the balls to who do cool things
Are you crazy?
My favourite band of all time. Thanks for sharing this material!
That's an amazing amount of research. Considering we are 38 years out, that's just insanely awesome.
Been excited for this video since you announced it! Amazing work! Thanks for making this.
Greatest band ever

Thanks for making sure to put ReBoot in there!

I remember this song from the 80s
Awesome video essay

Thank you for letting me know about the Laserdisc. It actually had credits at the end for Money for Nothing which filled in gaps about the production.
Fantastic, informative video. Super interesting! New sub over here 😊
Great video!
Excellent video!
Whenever I find myself singing this song I usually sub in “bastard”.
“That little bastard, he’s a millionaire”.
I've seen covers use the word "fella."
it’s strange because even when they first performed the song at Live Aid in 85 they didn’t even use the slur
"... and shamelessly excessive party of the year!"
They're doing blow. A lot of blow.
this is amazing, just an amazing video, good style.
Great work on this, your best one yet
People didn’t use to be as uptight as they are now, and it was great
South Park had an episode about that.
Cocaine tends to make you go a bit buck wild.
The animation part starts at 20:40

39:50 how camp do jagger and Bowie look here ❤
1985 is closer in time to 9/11 than now is 😱
Bosch. As in bosh. Bo-sh. Shhhh.
How about "that little FAKER with the earring and the makeup?" That way it still has the same basic sound and has a cynical overtone.
I had always thought it was about how this dude is complaining about really surface level and uninformed opinions about the music industry, while the actual consumer base just wants their mtv
Rather than Beavis and Butthead, the two figures seem to me to represent the male leads of “The Honeymooners.”
I always thought that the "little (homophobic slur)" was a reference to Prince.
I still were you are coming from. Princes Purple Rain dropped in the Summer of 1984. I still highly suspect it's George Michael, but hey those guys could have been talking about anyone at the time ;)

Could be Prince, could be Motley Crüe, could be Duran Duran or Adam Ant or Culture Club, there were many options in those days!
My initial thought was Boy George not gonna lie
The lyrics say he can play that guitar, so...
I thought the music video was made in the 90s.
💝💛💚💜💯👌
I had to laugh at calling the animation primitive because that is what they call the blocky shapes that make up the characters. Primitives.
QUIZ TIME; Who were the people in the song that were not dumb? "those guys ain't dumb".

I was born in 67. We HATED it in Jersey
@@suzannemadanat4053 Sure, but you're talking freaking Jersey. They hate everything in Jersey. lol
Fair enough 😂
